| This was no happy 39th birthday for Verno. He was bold and effective somewhat in the first round, but basically, Williams owned. Brave effort, though. Happy b-day, Verno... |

Paul Williams Hammers Verno Phillips
By Michael Woods
Many keyboard tappers hopped off the Paul Williams bandwagon when he tasted his first loss in February. Too tall for 147, we said. Try 154, or 160. Well, Williams has tried 160, and had success, in September. And on Saturday night at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California, he showed he has a firm grasp of the 154 pound class, with a conclusive hammering of durable spoiler Verno Phillips.
Williams was able to do what no man had done since 1988, that is, stop Phillips early. He tore into the loser’s body with a steady salvo of body blows, particularly right hooks, and Verno, a three time junior middleweight titlist, was unable to come out to start the ninth round.
Nobody in the joint, or watching on HBO, could say he didn’t earn his keep. Nor can they say that anyone who hopped off the Williams ‘wagon made a wise move. Long, Tall Paul is still a physical freak, with a height/reach/power/chin package that makes him on the very short list to give Floyd Mayweather Jr, problems WHEN Floyd comes back in 2009. Oh, did we mention that Williams has it going on in the cardio and the volume departments? He went 227-682; Verno was 91-396 on the night.
South Carolina’s Williams (153 ½ pounds; age 27) came in with a 35-1 (26 stops) record, while Colorado’s Phillips (age 39) came in at 42-11-1, with 21 KOs.
In the first, the lefty Williams used his seven inch height advantage. The two clashed heads later in the round, and Williams’ right eye bore the brunt. Verno landed a couple of sneaky quick rights when Williams dropped his left hand. In the second, Verno made it crystal clear that he wouldn’t be caving in to Williams’ rep. He clipped him with a left hook, and then again, aiming at the cut. Verno slips and blocks well, and he has a world class chin, too, we saw. In the third, Williams continued his campaign to scramble Verno’s insides. His right hooks to the body, especially, looked painful to watch, let alone absorb. The cut was open wider at the end of the third, and Williams was definitely stepping on the gas, looking to close it out right quick throughout the third.
In the fourth, Verno looked overmatched, but he hung tough. Same in the fifth; he scored with a left, too, just to show that Williams couldn’t bank on a stop just yet. The cut on Williams was still leaky at this point. In the sixth, the one sided fight stayed lopsided. If the fight stayed the same, one wouldn’t have faulted the ref if he started to think about halting the event. In the seventh, Verno’s legs still had bounce. Mercy, he is a tough sonofagun…Both men tangled up and hit the deck at the 2:10 mark. Verno tossed haymakers intermittently, but Williams kept enough distance between them and slipped them, mostly.
In the eighth, it looked to me like Verno’s legs were going. Would he make it to the end? No, it turned out. The doctor went to his corner and chatted with the fighter and his trainer.
In the TV opener, Chris Arreola rose to 25-0 with a third round KO of Travis Walker (28-1). The heavyweight, nicknamed the Nightmare, weighed in at 254 pounds on Friday, and every keyboard tapper prepared a “What was he thinking?” lead as he ate heavy leather in the first. Arreola’d sworn he’d trim down after weighing 258 ½ against Israel Garcia two months ago, and darn, we get that Thursday was Thanksgiving, but 4 ½ pounds doesn’t cut it, not when a man is thisclose to title shot. Yup, this looked like a clear-cut case of self sabotage early on, but Arreola yanked himself out of a bad situation and came through with a stoppage in a short, entertaining outing.
Walker came out banging in round one. Arreola was wobbled with left hook/right follow midway through the first. The Californian was excessively patient, and we wondered if he wasn’t in gear, or if he was just sizing up his man. Walker tossed 106 punches in the round, for the record.
Walker scored a knockdown with a straight right to start the second. Arreola, age 27, needed to snap out of the funk, quickly, or his dream would be derailed. He fired back, in fact, with a mean left hook. A combo sent down Walker, and he arose with 45 seconds to go. Arreola looked to close it out, and he notched another knockdown. Again, Walker got up. He didn’t clinch, and threw bombs back. He was probably saved by the bell.
In the third, an Arreola left hook ended the 29-year-old Walker’s night. He protested, but his legs were pasta soft, and the ref made the right call.
The time of the finish was 13 seconds of the third.
Arreola is the second ranked heavyweight in the IBF. We can be reasonably certain that there will be more discussions about his shape, and conditioning and how much attention he has been and should be paying attention to the scale as he gets closer to the opportunity of his lifetime.
Please check back for David Avila’s ringside report.

Williams sis a total throw back type fighter, trully willing to fight any1 in not 1 but 3 different weight classes, he looked so dam good in this fight its safe to say he pretty much cracked the top 10 p4p rankings, he has beaten every single man he has fought fought as a pro and done it in 3 diff weight classes and hes not even in his prom yet having only turned 27 a few months back, what a nightmare at 6'1 with a heavyweight reach and throws about a hundred punches a round often with power and rips the body well which is suprising for a man of his size and to top it all off hes A SOUTHPAW!!! theres a reason he is by far the most avoided man in boxing even when a 4 million dollar price tag is included to step in the ring with him, he will be a super star in 2009

P.Williams is no doubt someone to reckon with at 147,154 and even at 160. I have to give respect to Verno for stepping up and trying to fight this man. He's a very difficult person to fight. Guido, I'm with you I would like to see P.Williams fight some of those guys. Even though Vernon Forrest is older. He would give Williams some early round problems because he's a little bigger, not taller but bigger and I think he punches harder then Williams and he throws good clean shots. But I don't think he can keep up with the punch output of Williams unless he catches Williams early. I don't know if Arreola is ready for the Klitschko's the way he looked tonight. Can you imagineArreola standing in the line of fire of the Klitschko's. They are even bigger then Walker and punches just as hard if not harder and throws better punches. Before Arreola tries to take that leap I would like to see him fight Samuel Peter

Williams v Pavlik. That's the biggest fight out there for both of them, that they both stand a chance of winning. They should both avoid Abraham. Good solid performance from the Punisher, some top notch body work. Arreola showed he is a crowd pleaser, but only against a game but ineffective Walker. Still a ways to go yet. DON, you around man? Let's see.I wouldn't mind paying 50 dollars for a Paul Williams /Miguel Cotto with Margarito/Clottey in the undercarcard.Or Jemain Taylor/Paul Williams with a fight between Kelly Pavlik/Arthur Abraham on the same night. A set up like that would be good for boxing cause the fans would see four good fighters in one night and possibly see the two winners fight in the near future.Too bad boxing doesn't think about the fans the way fans think about boxing.

Williams can be matched with anyone and everyone from 147,154,160. Arreola has some terrific power. If Arreola can get past the first two rounds with anyone then he has a good shot at winning.

i do agree that a williams/pavlik fight looks great. williams needs to stop looking for fights at 147 and 154. he is able to squeeze down to that weight, but he is so much bigger than those fighters, so it is not his natural weight class. i am sure if he goes after pavlik, wright, all those guys at middle and super middle, he wont be crying about people ducking him...and yeah, i have to agree, both and pav do need to avoid abraham.

RealTalk..DonPuto.. I couldn't have said it any better. Arreola is nowhere near on the Klitschko's level. ALOOF..If Williams is able to make 147,154 then why shouldn't he fight at those weights? I don't hear anyone calling him out at any of those weights. If he was struggling making 147 then some fighter will expose him and hit him because he is too weak or something but I don't see that. He's just a freak of nature. He actually fought Margarito with bruised ribs going into the fight. He never said anything about it.

aloof, what the hell are you talking about? If p-will can make weight at 147 or 154 then that's where he should fight. I don't here people complaining about margarito at 147?? If you have ever fought in your life then you would know it has nothing to do with height! Williams is looking to fight, period. He cares about where he stands against the greats that fought before him, and for that I respect him more everyday... Tell Margarito to grow some balls and fight P-Will again, I guarantee it will be worse than what he got before!!

Yup! Some people say to this day that GOAT Muhammad Ali was nothing but a loud-mouth, slapping bum. I don't believe those words about Ali, and I will not believe those words about Chris Arreola. It is time for change. The Cali-Mexican will win one of those alphabet-soup sanctioning organization belt in 09. And whosoever is the real champ, The Nightmare slugger will scorch his butt in that squared jungle, aka hurt square. Wow! I guess somebody is going to always hate somebody. This is what I was talking about in Berto Vs Collazo article a few days ago. Berto has to make a statement if he wants to make the BIG BUCKS in boxing. Paul has done just that by Destroying Phillips at 154lbs he sending a messages to the top dogs and moneymakers ANYTIME ANYWHERE! I fight fans love more than anything else a Fearless Fighter. Vernon Forrest is clearly the next and greatest opponent for the Punisher to face Santos who's tamed the Tijuana tornado TWICE is another great challenge both are over 6ft like Williams hard punchers sound boxers and are still in there physical prime and are starving for high profile fight and Williams is NOW a High profile fighter. Young lions like Angulo & Kirkland are not nearly ready for this kind of talent. Pavllk & Abraham are huge but Paul good squeak on points with his high work rate and slick movement. Welterweight? FORGET ABOUT IT! He shows them that he's way TOO BIG STRONG POWERFUL BRAVE & BUSY to deal with. Even the former most avoided fighter Margarito and the even more avoided Clottey's people will not be dialing the Punisher number anytime soon.

I give Paul credit for being mentally and physically tough,. and bold enough to take risks,.. but I think he needs someone like Emanual Stewart or one of the Mayweathers to teach him some of the "sweet science",.. Paul was out of position numerous times,.. and he keeps his legs spread too far apart,.. in addition to needing to work on his jab which is just a probing arm punch,... just a little friendly criticism,.. I enjoy watching Paul fight and find his matches exciting,..but he really needs to mature a bit more before his confidence gets him over matched,. do you really think Paul could survive Sergio Martinez,. Alfredo Angulo,.. James Kirkland, Arthur Abrahms or even Kelly Pavlik??? Notice that Paul didn't call out any junior middles or middleweights?? all that aside I think his managment will continue to match Paul carefully untill the talent catches up with the hype,.. and frankly Paul needs to avoid 168 for a few years,.. he's not ready for Taylor,.Kessler, Bhop.. Dirrell or even Andrade,.. Pauls future looks bright ,..I hope his team will move him carefully and get him the technical schooling he needs so he can continue to improve.

BROWNSUGAR..You hit it on the nose, I agree Paul needs to be taught some more of the sweet science. Even though Im not a fan of Emanuel Stewart but you are right, Stewart would be a good guy to have in this situation because Emanuel is great with guys who has a tremendous advantage over there opponents. I think your criticism was right on the mark. This is what boxing needs more of. Like any other sport they show how to beat the other teams and they talk about the weaknesses. I don't think guys like Angulo, Kirkland are ready for Williams and that Pavlik/Williams fight would be a good one. But I agree with you on Abraham. I don't think he will fight at 168 and if he does..WHEW!! That's a tough task.

Thanks School,.. Pauls done a lot for a guy that's only had 25 amatuer fights,..I'm surprised you think Angulo would have a hard time against Paul,..Angulo's had some tough fights against some hard case come-ahead fighters at 154 and relishes a fight with a guy that will bring the fight to him,.. but I respect your opinion,.. Yeah Paul has a tendency to turn his right shoulder into his oponent at a 90 degree angle while he reaches across his body with those long arms to land chopping hooks with the left, it's pattern he exhibits in every fight,.. Pavlik/Williams(a technique that will work against smaller guys),.. Pavlik has a good inside game too and could make Paul pay dearly for his tendancy to be off balance and in poor position,.. ......... I bet Pavlik wishes he fought Williams while the offer was on the table instead of Bhop,.. but the lessons he learned will prove to be invaluable to Kelly,... (another fighter that suffers from having an amatuer trainer who doesn't completely understand the sweet science)... anyway like you said Paul definitely brings the anticipation and excitement back to boxing..

What! are you talking about kirkland and angulo are very easy to hit and Palivk was exposed and Kesseler is a coward for not fighting Miranda. Paul fought and beat Margarito, that why he ran to Sugar. Nobody is calling Paul out, you guys watch boxing and know dung. Manny Steward could not train his way out of a wet paper bag! But Mayweather Sr. or Nacho teach boxing, the old school way defense and combo punching. Paul is the most fear fighter under 168!

Waldorf,... apparently you don't know as much about boxing as you think you do,...and you obviously have poor reading skills,.. Emmanual Stewart was voted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame as well as the World Boxing Hall of Fame,.. in addition to being a guiding force behind the most dominate Heavy Weight of this ERA (yes,.. you've heard of Wladimir K),.. If you had the patience to finish reading the entire posts,.. it would be clear to you that I'm a big fan of Paul,.. that's why I'd hate to see him believe his own hype as he has a great deal of work ahead of himself if he's to become a true P4P great,.. already the young guns and tigers of the 154 Div are beginning to stand in line for opportunity to get at Paul,.. like the true WBO champ Serg Drinziruk,.. a much more experienced fighter that's already defeated Santos and has far greater amatuer experience,.. with a much more sound boxing foundation,.. Paul is good,.. but give him time to mature and grow into the one of the divisions best,.. Did you see how many lumps Paul had on his left cheek bone after the fight,?? and Phillips isn't even close to being the divisions biggest hitter,.. Paul won that fight because he has a big heart,.. and walked thru the pain to dish out a healthier dose of his own brand of body busting punishment,.. But Paul can't get away with being strickly a face fighter when it gomes to the better opponents,.. and he would do well to avoid Dzinziruk untill he's been properly schooled.

Paul got the name "most feared boxer" because he was avoided by Margorito who never agreed to a rematch,.. it's a knickname that's been overplayed by HBO and those that handle his Public Relations(along with every boxing site on the web),.. it was intended to get the ambitious Williams some much needed Publicity and to put his name in the mainstream (which = $$$),.. Anyone who believes that Paul is actually feared by other light middles and middleweights are blinded by the hype machine that's driven by commercial Dollars(and HBO),.. Just like HBO pushed Pavlik to Bhop, Paul will be similarly embarrassed if his team allows HBO to match Paul with boxers like Serg Martinez, Dzinziruk, Angulo or Pavlik (even Kirkland's chances look good against Paul),.. Pavlik never avoided Williams,.. Williams had just avenged his loss to
Quintana but hadn't built up a marquee name that could command the kinds of Dollars that Bhop did,.. besides it looked like a lopsided challenge in Pavliks favor at the time,.. Yes Pavlik was beaten,.. but not exposed,.. he's still a force to be reckonned with at 160 and his next opponent will feel his frustration over his loss to Bhop... Meanwhile Paul just stepped into a place of true Challenge, High-Risk and Opportunity,.. I hope he makes wise choices.

Williams v. Pavlik at 160 should be next. Would be a great fight! Cotto won't fight Paul b/c Cotto doesn't want to risk getting beat before fight Margarito in his mandatory rematch. Oscar won't fight Paul b/c he's got Hatton on the brain. Margarito has Mosley lined up before the Cotto rematch...there's NOBODY AT 154 unless you count Vernon but we won't...the only fight that makes sense is Pavlik at 160 and be a 3-division champion before age 30.

"It Takes A Special Man"
"It takes a special man to lace them on and step into a ring to either hurt or be hurt. It's always been my opinion that the greatest fighters (not necessarily the most commercially successful) are probably born with that never give up until I'm completely done attitude. It can be nurtured over time, but you either have it or you don't. When adversity hits, and it will, this instinct will allow you to reach inside for additional strength and determination. Ali, Louis, Gatti, Corrales had it....Marquez and Pacquiao have it. De La Hoya, for all the great things he did as a boxer never had it, Tyson didn't have It, Cotto doesn't have it, and as much as I hate to admit it because I loved to watch him fight, Chavez didn't have it. 99.9% of us don't have it either. That's why we're not all fighters and we can sit here and judge these courageous men from the comfort of our computers."
