Chasing Titles: Chris Arreola & Travis Walker

By David A. Avila

Riverside’s Chris “The Nightmare” Arreola and Florida’s Travis “Freight Train” Walker remember when Americans used to dominate the heavyweight division.

They both want the distinction of bringing back a world title to the U.S.

Arreola (25-0, 22 KOs) and Walker clash on Saturday, Nov. 29, at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario to decide who will be first to crash the Eastern European stranglehold on the heavyweight world titles.

The Goossen-Tutor Promotions fight card begins early at 4:30 p.m. HBO’s famed television crew will be announcing the fight to the rest of the nation.

Both Arreola and Walker want to disrupt the European monopoly, but first they must erupt on each other to discover who deserves first crack.

Walker says Arreola has never faced a real heavyweight.

“His fights have been with a lot of lighter weight guys, I’m a real heavyweight,” said Walker (28-1-1, 22 KOs) of Arreola. “I’m not a cruiserweight walking around saying I’m a heavyweight. I’m a real heavyweight and it’s time for him to find out.”

Both American heavyweights have traveled on a similar path and are promoted by Goossen-Tutor.

“It would be great for Arreola to win and become the first Mexican heavyweight to win a world title,” said Dan Goossen, the president of Goossen-Tutor. “But Travis Walker can win it too.”

Arreola has been touted as the first heavyweight of Mexican lineage to truly have a shot at winning a world title. Promoters like Goossen see big dollar signs if he can reach the top level.

“They’re hoping he wins because he’s a Mexican heavyweight. I understand that, because it’s good for business,” said Walker, slightly angered that he’s been overlooked. “But this is my business right here. This is not his business, it is my business.”

For the last two years Walker has been asking for a match against Arreola, who’s been gathering attention nationwide via television.

“When I first came they started talking about Jason Estrada and I had to get him,” said Walker, who beat him two years ago at Soboba Casino by majority decision. “When I finally fought him I demolished him.”

The Arreola fight almost didn’t happen for Walker who was derailed by left-handed slugger TJ Wilson a year ago in Sacramento in the first round. He avenged that knockout defeat with a second round knockout two months later.

“It was great to come back with a victory like that. It was overwhelming,” Walker said. “I shouldn’t have lost that first fight.”

Finally, Walker gets his dream match with the Nightmare.

“He says I’ve never fought anybody with a winning record,” laughs Arreola. “Look at the guys he’s faced.”

Walker knows he needs a win to keep his place in line.

“There’s only one way to find out who’s the best,” said Walker while in Ontario. “He’s going to give me what I need to see where I’m at. And I’m going to give him what he needs to see where he’s at.”

Arreola and Walker are fighting to see who challenges the European stranglehold on the titles.

“He talks about knocking me out and everything,” said Arreola while at a media workout on Wednesday. “I don’t predict knockouts. But I will predict I’m going to win.”

Other heavyweights

Bakersfield’s Manuel Quezada is another heavyweight of Mexican lineage who is on the Ontario fight card and he faces Nigeria’s Teke Oruh, who lost his last fight by decision. Both need a win to stay among the top 50 heavyweights.

Quezada, 31, is trained by South El Monte’s Ben Lira, who also trains lightweight sensation John Molina. The Bakersfield heavyweight has a 13-fight win streak, including wins over Andrew Greeley and John Clark.

Oruh, 30, has wins over Jason Gavern and Clark but is not a big puncher. The winner of this heavyweight match could conceivably fight the winner of Arreola and Walker.

Additional bouts

Another Riverside prizefighter, Josesito Lopez (22-3, 13 KOs) is also on the boxing card. He was originally scheduled to fight Mongolia’s undefeated Bayan Jargal but that fighter’s team decided the teammate of Arreola has too many fights on his resume. Now Lopez is facing Salt Lake City’s Chris Fernandez (15-5-1, 9 KOs) in a junior welterweight bout.

East L.A.’s Shawn Estrada, a member of the U.S. Olympic boxing team that went to Beijing this past summer, makes his pro debut against Lawrence Jones (2-1-1) of Washington D.C. Estrada is a big middleweight and plans to try the 154-pound junior middleweight division.

Michael Dallas Jr. (5-0) a slick fighting southpaw from Bakersfield, tries Mexico’s Jose Lugo (10-5) in a six round welterweight bout. Dallas is managed by Jackie Kallen, the famous female boxing manager whose life was portrayed in the motion picture Against The Ropes.

Fight results

Kaliesha West suffered her first loss last week against Northern California’s Ava Knight in a bout for a vacant regional title at Friant, California. It was a close fight but all three judges gave Knight the edge 77-75.

It was West’s first loss as a professional.

“I truly feel if I had fought at Morongo or somewhere in Southern California I would have won the decision,” said West. “But she won the fight. She is a good fighter.”

West hopes a rematch can be made with Knight soon. Hopefully, she adds, for a world title.

Hattons

Ricky Hatton’s victory over Brooklyn’s Paul Malignaggi sets the table for a match with the winner of Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao’s match that takes place on Dec. 6, in Las Vegas.

Probably a big upset was Hatton’s brother Matthew Hatton who beat rugged veteran Ben Tackie in a 10 round welterweight bout by unanimous decision. That was a truly big test the younger brother passed.

Fights on television

Fri. Telefutura, 8 p.m., Jesus Soto Karass (21-3-3) vs. Hicklet Lau (20-17-2).

Sat. HBO, 10 p.m., Paul Williams (35-1) vs. Verno Phillips (42-10-1).

Peter Egley:  In the current issue of The Ring, referring Arreola's match against Israel Garcia, they said: "Forget sparring, it looks like Arreola ate James Toney!"
Friday Nov 28, 2008 07:21:20 PM
Peter Egley:  That Travis Walker sounds like a bad dude. And as far as the European stranglehold, most seem to count Hasim Rahman out (oops, there's a pun in there!!!!), but Rahman has a good chance to be a champ again. Also: I would have liked to have seen the Kalesha West-Ava Knight match, but this seems to be heard a lot in women's boxing, the hometown decision thing.
Friday Nov 28, 2008 07:37:46 PM
Jim S.:  Walker looks like a bad dude too. No disrespect to him, but unfortunately for all of us his isn't it. There's no buzz regarding Walker for a reason: He talks and looks tough, but in the ring he appears to under-achieve. Now I haven't seen him fight in a while, and he may have come along way. I hope he has because he could be a star. However, I suspect it will be Arreola winning this fight, probably late TKO, and eventually getting a fight with a beltholder. Then we will watch him get demolished by a Klit bro, and everyone will scream he was overrated. Unfortunately for us they will be right.
Friday Nov 28, 2008 08:34:06 PM
SchoolOfHardKnocks:  JimS..I agree with what you said but as far as Walker goes how do you say he appears to under-achieve when the man is 28-1-1 (22KO's)? And he redeemed his only loss with a 2nd round tko. I don't understand. I watched Walker fight and he has a very good chance of beating Arreola because I do think Arreola is very over rated. He is not a good heavyweight to me at all. He hasn't fought anyone. If he wins I would like to see him step up and fight at least Jason Estrada, hwo has called him out or really step up and fight Samuel Peter.

andy from newcastle:  Did none of you lot see Walker against El Lardo, the Latin Blob? The guy was 5 foot 2, 350 lbs, and Walker was booed throughout the fight for being totally crap. This will be a Mexican Nightmare for Travis, worse than eating dodgy enchaladas. Toonoy

andy from newcastle:  Don mate. did you make it? Toonoy
Saturday Nov 29, 2008 08:26:10 AM
SchoolOfHardKnocks:  Andy..You are talking about Travis fighting Garcia, I can understand that. You make it seem as though Arreola's opponent has been class A. I guess fighting guys like Cliff Couser, who is known for taking dives is a quality fighter..Beating guys like Sedrick Fields and the Derek Berry's of the world makes him a top fighter. Get Real! This by far will be Arreola's biggest test. Damian Wills was garbage. Look at the guys he fought. Denzel Washington had been fooled by managing Wills and as soon as he lost Denzel dropped him like a hot potato..lol Stop believing the hype. If Arreola gets past this fight, like I said throw him in the ring with Sam Peter. I would like to see him fight even an old washed up Lamon Brewster.

Radam G aka Humble PRG hanging out at Seafood City in National City, Cali with my peeps and posse:  Wow! SchoolOfHardKnocks, don't get soft pillows on me. Chris is going to kayo the "Freight Train" Walker early -- maybe no more than four rounds. But I'm feeling one or two. It will be Fright Night and then a crashed-up Night Train with Walker sleep walking from the Cali-Mexican Nightmare beatdown. Chris is the real Nightmare, not just an eating one like the Nigerian quitting on the stool because of overeating and Dr. Vitali K using pee pee on the hand wraps. Fatty Sammy Peter got confused by that smell of peep peep. If he ever fights Chris, his will crash through the canvas. There will be no sitting. Enough said. Holla!

andy from newcastle:  HK, you're right, I've been listening to me old mate Radam too much on this one. Still, I'll cover my tracks by saying that I'm not so much hyping Arreola, as slagging off Walker. It will be a time killer until the PW fight. Toonoy

Radam G aka Humble PRG eating Lapu-Lapu fish and drinking Pinoy coconut juice -- the PacMan's drink:  SchoolOfHardKnocks, I've not heard your respond about the Curry Boys. Again, it was Bruce boxing Sugar Ray Leonard in the amateurs, not Donald. Donald was the man at 147lbs in 1980. He was on the team that didn't go to Moscow Olympic Games. Hey, SOHK, trust me. I never feed wolf tickets or make up stuff like most of these posers, haters and busters do. Like you, I have game and I've played the game. Holla!

SchoolOfHardKnocks laughing at how easily Pacquiao's sparring partners was hitting him:  Radam, I left my response on the one where you corrected me about Bumphus not being from NY. When I was talking about the guys making the 80 Olympic team. I made the mistake and said 76 team. I was wrong. I was talking about Donald Curry would have been on the 80 team with Alex Ramos and Johnny Bumphus. I don't know what game you played and don't care but when you say someone is feeding wolf tickets you must be talking about yourself. You see this isn't about you or myself but you must want some respect from someone here because you don't get it other places but I'm the wrong cat.. Believe that! Now I will say to you anytime..lol What else you got for me. What have I made up? Are you upset because your midget boy is going to get destroyed on Dec. 6th? COME WIT IT!
Saturday Nov 29, 2008 01:54:16 PM
SchoolOfHardKnocks laughing at how easily Pacquiao's sparring partners was hitting him:  Also I don't know you and don't care to know you and don't like you. So when you call someone a hater or poser, like I said you got the wrong cat here. I will tell you what I will tell anyone on here. I guarantee I do more into boxing right now then you have ever done. I will tell you again, you have the wrong cat here. I can care less if you have so called played the game. All you have showed me is that you are an arrogant CLOWN! I'm here to talk boxing. Boxing is what I do..So COME WIT IT!
Saturday Nov 29, 2008 04:16:35 PM
Abraham UIT:  Walker won't be too much trouble for Arreola. Walker is slow. Alot slower than Arreola. If I was a betting man I'd say Arreola blasts Walker out in rounds 3-5. In other words this is not a distance fight in Arreola's favor.
Saturday Nov 29, 2008 06:10:11 PM
Real Talk :  OOOOOOOOH ..... sombody needs to pick they're face up !!!!!! he he he he heeeee . get the gloves . Siiiiiiike ...can't we all just get along
Saturday Nov 29, 2008 07:52:41 PM
Real Talk :  Knocks..... what sparring partner you talking about ??? I think Arreola is overrated too . The first glance I said They can't be serious about him contending for Klitchco . He looks out of shape ,,,,, but I haven't been following either . Yell at me . Dueces
Saturday Nov 29, 2008 07:56:23 PM
Big Daddy:  You don't "Feed" Wolf Tickets Fool! You Sell them! What a Phoney Dufus... YOU'SA POSER!!!!
Saturday Nov 29, 2008 07:58:24 PM
andy from newcastle:  Good solid KO, could still be hype though, cos as we knew, Travis is crap. Like his good honest lingo though. Toonoy. As for Paul, Julian Jackson couldn't stop Verno, so he was never gonna knock him out. He showed real class with his body work. Brutal and 'punishing'. Frank Castle would be proud of him. Catch y'all on the fight write. Toonoy again (off to watch Kate Moss, Jimmy Clitheroe, 24/7)
Saturday Nov 29, 2008 10:21:05 PM
Real Talk:  Yeah ...that is true . You sell wolf tickets . he he he . Man ...you see that fluke stoppage ?!?!? I'm not impressed with Arreola at all . He was giggling all over the place . He better tighten up quick fast with the hurry up !! Klitschco would KO him real bad . They should make a super Heavy weight division in my opinion . I don't see any threat to the Klitchco bros. except maybe David Haye if he's lucky . Paul Williams handle his business , look kinda sluggish though . He put them hands on Verno Phillips ...who fought with heart . Much respect to both . Peace n Blessings
Saturday Nov 29, 2008 10:29:16 PM
Anony:  :::: CHRIS WON BUT.... HE IS TOO BIG, TOO SLOW AND ALMOST GOT CAUGHT... NOT READY FOR KLITSCHKO OBVIOUSLY :::::
Saturday Nov 29, 2008 10:36:17 PM
SchoolOfHardKnocks:  RealTalk..No you have the wrong cat..lol Selling wolf tickets?? You better talk to Radam about that. Everyone was saying how fast Arreola was and I knew Walker was much faster. No excuses. Arreola won the fight but I agree with you. I'm still not impressed. It looked as though Walker had no defense at all. He put Arreola down with straight punches and that's exactly what the Klitschko's throw. You are right I don't see any threat with the Klitschko bros. Paul Williams is going to have to continue to go up and down to get fights because none of the welters will fight him or jr's. Maybe he might have to stay in the Middleweight division.
Saturday Nov 29, 2008 10:38:15 PM
andy from newcastle:  Paul should call out Pavlik, that's definetely his best and highest profile option. Quick question. Who are the two young brothers and , I guess, their father (light brown suit, yellow tie), who are ALWAYS in the ring before and after so many televised fights? They were standing behind Paul at the end of this one. Toonoy
Saturday Nov 29, 2008 10:46:43 PM
TOMMY R:  2 fun fights to watch, arreola is tough as nails and has balls and heart cause walker can crack and came to win but arrola better get that weight down and his speed up cause he looked slower than ever tonight and u cant eat to many shots at heavyweight or its lights out, paul williams is an animal! hes now a top 10 p4p fighter as far as im concerned and will be a superstar in 09
Saturday Nov 29, 2008 10:51:19 PM
Real Talk:  Hey Knocks , I wasn't talking bout you selling wolf tickets . I was speaking on somebody using the slang wrong . Saying feed wolf tickets instead of selling wolf tickets . Arreola is a bum , can't bow , only has power . He's gonna get KO'd if they put him in there with anybody serious . This just goes to show how far the heavyweight division has declined . Sad . Holla
Sunday Nov 30, 2008 12:48:58 PM
SchoolOfHardKnocks:  RealTalk..I know you wasn't calling me..lol That was this cat name RadamG, whoever he is. He's saying the people on here are posers, haters and as he said feeding wolf tickets..lol We know he's the poser. Hey I was telling you about the sparring I saw Manny had on Thanksgiving Day..He was getting really served by Holloway. He was getting served so bad that Freddie canceled there bus ride on Monday saying that they found a new tape where it showed some weaknesses on Oscar. Can you believe that garbage..lol A jab was killing Manny and you could see the size difference. Holloway is about 5"10 to 5"11. Manny was throwing punches and falling off balance almost everytime.
Sunday Nov 30, 2008 03:10:27 PM
Radam G aka Humble PRG:  *Bozo Daddy Dufus, you should go back to school. You are so gutter. Quit taking thing literally. Your keyboard thugging is showing you to be quite a smooth brained hippo. jenny Craig or Richard Simmons may be able to fix you up, or is that down. Real Talk, I was *using a play on words -- better known as been hyperbolical. Holla!

2009 Reader Of The Year Weighs In On Legacies Of Pacquiao And Mayweather
"Pacquiao has proven....in the ring... time and time again that he is the greatest of this time. He has earned his respect. He begs for nothing. He is a man content with his growth, his family and his achievements. A man the world has now turned it's eyes to behold. Floyd Mayweather is not even close in stature. He may possess the greatest skills but he is not the Face of Boxing today. Google Manny Pacquiao. There are 20 million searches. Google Floyd. There are 6.5 million. Look at the NYTimes, the Wall Street Journal and Time. Count how many words were used these past years to mention Floyd Mayweather. Then count the words still being printed about Manny. And keep counting. As I've said many times, Floyd has been too clever by half. He has short changed his public.....and has out-smarted himself. Manny will fight but a few more times. Enjoy it while you can. He is an all time great pugilist. Floyd, with all of his remarkable skills lack the will to be truly great in the biggest sense of the word. His legacy will look more like Holmes that Ali. He has earned it." ---November is half-way gone, but we don't need to keep counting ballots. It's a landslide. Fe'Roz has won the 2009 Reader of the Year award. His comments add to the website immeasurably, and he epitomizes the thoughtful, respectful, educated fan of pugilism we strive to cater to at TSS. Congrats, Fe'Roz, and please accept my thanks for being the valued member of this community that you are. Sincerely, Editor Mike
