er chance at beating Floyd with Floys Sr. in his corner

Print this article     Email this article

Hatton Should Get Another Go At Floyd

By Dan Horgan

Is there only one Ricky Hatton?  After the Brit’s 11-round beat-down of Paulie Malignaggi on Saturday, the answer is an emphatic ‘no.’

Throughout his career, Hatton has battered and frustrated opponents with fast, powerful hands and a smothering hit-and-grab style of fighting.  But the Hatton we saw on Saturday was different than “The Hitman” of old; the new Hatton was more fluid with his attack, better able to land his often wild power punches, and more adept at avoiding incoming shots.  There are now two Ricky Hattons – the Hatton who lost to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in December of last year, and the improved Hatton of now.

Hatton’s enhanced defense can probably be attributed to his new trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr., the father of Mayweather Jr. In the six weeks Mayweather Sr. worked with Hatton, the 56 year old promised the media that Hatton would stop getting hit as a result of his aggression.  This pledge largely came true on Saturday, as Hatton used career-best feints and angles to get inside and inflict damage upon Malignaggi.

Hatton dumped long-time trainer Billy Graham after struggling to a win against Juan Lazcano in May.  Mayweather Sr., Hatton said, was a great replacement because of the direction he provided in Hatton’s camp.  This collaboration ironically came after Mayweather Sr. called Hatton a “human punching bag” before Hatton’s fight with Mayweather Jr.

But with the impressiveness of his most recent outing, Hatton's life could be filled with even more irony.  There remains the outside chance that Hatton face Mayweather Jr. again, only this time with Mayweather Sr. in the Manchester native's corner. The Mayweather vs. Mayweather matchup, which was cancelled when Mayweather Jr. pulled out of a rematch against the Mayweather Sr.-traind Oscar De La Hoya, would finally take place with Hatton in the middle.

How would that be for a turn of events?

Many will question if Hatton (45-1, 32 KOs) would stand a chance against Mayweather if the two were to meet again.  Their first fight was a one-sided affair that Mayweather pick apart his aggressive foe with crisp, telling blows en route to a tenth-round stoppage.  And although Hatton’s defensive skills have improved, the 30 year old would have a difficult time making Mayweather, one of the game’s most accurate punchers, miss with his shots.

But Mayweather-Hatton II makes sense for both fighters – and for fans.  Mayweather, whose addiction to money is about as strong as R. Kelly’s alleged lust for teen girls, would make another multi-million dollar payday in a rematch that most would pick him to win.  Hatton would in turn get the chance to avenge his only career loss.  Fans would get to see Mayweather end his retirement in a highly-dangerous comeback fight.

Hatton has been talked about as a potential opponent for the winner of the December 6th clash between superstars Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao.  But banking on landing the victor, especially if it were to be the inactive De La Hoya, would be unwise for Hatton, whose prime days are numbered.   Hatton would be better-served to pursue a rematch with Mayweather while he still has the goods to win the fight.  A win over Mayweather would be the only way Hatton could secure his legacy as the all-time great he hopes to be.

Mayweather-Hatton II would likely play out similar to the first fight, but several discrepancies could take place.  In the first few rounds of Mayweather-Hatton I, Hatton’s aggression forced Mayweather into a low-volume work rate.  Not until Hatton began to come in recklessly did Mayweather up his punch output.  If Hatton could get inside against Mayweather like he did versus Malignaggi, he would continue to thwart Mayweather’s punch volume, thus allowing his own work-rate, one of his best qualities as a fighter, to be more effective.  Further, Hatton, who has now boxed twenty-one rounds in the past eleven months with ultra-slick fighters, would not make the same careless mistakes that allowed Mayweather to win the first fight so handily.

Mayweather, who announced his retirement after his win over Hatton, has yet to indicate that he’d like to return to boxing.  But “Pretty Boy’s” greed for green is powerful.  He’s already beaten one Ricky Hatton. To get another payday, he’ll just have to fight another.

Radam G aka Humble PRG:  Nice piece, Fightwriter Dan. And it is spot on about Ricky. He has now become Tricky-Slicky Ricky. But I predicted that Joy May would do wonders with the (Get-)Hitman. As a kid, I use to see the greatest boxing guro of all times Angie Dundee turned beat-ups to beaters. So I'm not surprised at all about the coming days of success for Ricky with this poetry-reciting trainer Joy May. Though Joy May is no Angie. Ricky will probably go after PacMan, after the meltdown of the Golden Boy. Time will tell. But remember I'm from Nation Pac. Manny wins! against any version of the Brit. Holla!

Son of Sam Peter:  If Mayweather returns, he should fight Joe Calzaghe. That's the fight he should seek if he truly wants to validate his career, silence the naysayers who said he dodged the elite opposition of his day, and cement his place among the all time greats. That's right, Mayweather - Calzaghe at 168. Floyd should come in at his optimum weight, not just meet the limit because it's the limit. They did it in the past, why not now? You want a big money bonanza, a superfight, then Mayweather - Calzaghe baby. Peace.
Monday Nov 24, 2008 12:13:02 PM
rudy:  I'm sure Floyd would jump at the chance to give Hatton another beating. And to say Hatton has a chance at a different outcome because of wins over Lazcano and Paulie is ludicrous!!!! If anything changes, Hatton gets KTFO earlier.
Monday Nov 24, 2008 12:17:09 PM
rudy:  BTW, stupid R Kelly joke.
Monday Nov 24, 2008 12:19:00 PM
Fistic Fury:  Sorry I disagree, I think it would be even less competitive if they fought again and Hatton tried his new slick boxing technique. The reason it took 10 rounds last time was because of his awkward style, he's not gonna be able to fight a technical fight against Floyd or he will eat bombs all night. I think people are overrating his win over Paulie, the minute he steps in with someone who can punch who won't be bullied (Oscar, Margarito etc) he will be in alot of trouble...
Monday Nov 24, 2008 12:19:00 PM
Sailorguy:  Hatton looked spot on against malignaggi best hatton performance to date . Cant wait for De La Hoya/ hatton. After GB picks pacquiao apart the next best match up would indeed be against the hitman.
Monday Nov 24, 2008 12:19:23 PM
Fistic Fury:  He can't take a good shot and that's a problem when you're as open as him. Even the hispanic causing panic had his rocking and rolling a couple of times. STUPID ARTICLE!!! It's people like you calling for this fight that diminish our chances of seeing genuinely good competitive fights.
Monday Nov 24, 2008 12:25:18 PM
Jonald:  Excellent points from rudy and FF. The win over Paulie is being overblown. This reminds me of Roy Jones. He beats 3 journeymen in a row (yes, Tito at 170 is a journeyman) and suddenly he's back, better than ever. Sorry, but Lazcano and Paulie don't tell us a whole lot. Even if we accept that Hatton is now a slickster and an excellent boxer, Floyd is the master of that genre and therefore it would be nullified completely. Hatton's only chance would be an ugly and artless brawl. That said, I assume you're proposing this rematch take place at 140 pounds, right? Hatton himself has said he has nothing at 147. And like Radam, I hope PacMan pulls it out against Oscar.
Monday Nov 24, 2008 12:39:33 PM
Jim S:  I'm not going to insult the article or the author, but I do agree that this potential fight just isn't compelling. I personally think Hatton is getting too much mileage out of his win this past weekend, as Malignaggi has no pop, has always been open to get hit, and has not beat one elite fighter. Give us Hatton vs Juan Diaz, and I will buy!
Monday Nov 24, 2008 12:58:49 PM
Porcupine:  Stop it.
Monday Nov 24, 2008 01:02:18 PM
Real Talk:  Take this one back to the factory !!! Hatton can't beat Jab Judah ... yeah I said it . He aint got to put cheeks in the seats if he fights in the UK ...so that one don't fly right . He (meaning Hatton ) better pick his opponent REALLY CAREFULLY , otherwise he's gonna get KO'd . He's wide open for clean shots . Joy May has got his work cut out for him !!!! He loses to Floyd ten out of ten times . Hatton is a JR. WELTER OK !!! Lets get this understood , If he fights Bradshaw , Witter or Lamont Peterson he taking a L . I'm just speaking the truth , somebody needs to tell the man the truth . Tighten up that defense , move your head, don't come straight in meaning use your angles , etc. It may be a little late to teach him this , but if Mayweather can do it . Then he probably is the best out there.
Monday Nov 24, 2008 01:06:24 PM
Sailorguy:  I think hattons performance on saturday was great even though everyone knew he was gonna beat malignaggi. I think if he keeps up the good work and continues to work with mayweather he might have a decent chance against de la hoya next year. (given he beats pac man which i'm betting he will)
Monday Nov 24, 2008 01:20:09 PM
Ben O'connor:  alright chaps. agree with most of you but i actually was pretty impressed with ricky this weekend. he done what he had to do with someone who was just trying to avoid a stoppage. very awkward indeed and thought he kept his head well and completely overwhelmed paulie emphatically. but as for a rematch with floyd............hell no!! the fight would have to be at jr welter AINT GONNA HAPPEN with floyds legs chained close together AINT GONNA HAPPEN with hatton wearing a headguard and no gloves AINT GONNA HAPPEN. then ill take the hitman by SD!!! hahahahahaha 115- 113 twice for ricky with judge cortez scoring the bout 121-107 for floyd!!! hehehe, just playing. floyd is one of the greatest fighters ive ever seen technically. and have to agree with Fistic Fury hatton is pretty chinny!! if boxing was 13 rounds, he would of been brutally ko'ed by collazo (a quick but average welter)! love ricky tho, gotta admire the guys bottle. he was out classed my PBF last time and would be again. FLOYD KO 8 at jr welter KO 6 at welter!!
Monday Nov 24, 2008 01:39:06 PM
pete steward:  MAYWEATHER SHOULD FIGHT CALZAGHE!.............Go back to sleep son of sam. I'd rather see the Hitman Vs the Pacman....NOW THAT'S FIGHT! Mayweather rematch NAH! Floyd is still to pretty in the ring and still the best.
Monday Nov 24, 2008 01:43:41 PM
Sailorguy:  I disagree i think that with more work and Mayweather Sr. at his corner he has a pretty good chance at pulling of a victory over pretty boy.
Monday Nov 24, 2008 02:00:17 PM
Kool-Aid:  I don't want to see Mayweather-Hatton II. It would be the same outcome...Mayweather TKO Hatton 10RD. If Mayweather comes back, he needs to fight Margarito. PERIOD. Otherwise, don't waste my time talking about Mayweather fighting anyone else. As for Hatton...he's not a welterweight. He will lose at welterweight to Berto, Mosley, Clottey...any one of them. Hatton better stay at 140, fight Bradley and attempt to take all the belts at 140 if he wants to remain viable in the sport.
Monday Nov 24, 2008 02:35:24 PM
paulbo:  Let's not give Hatton more credit than his win over Malignaggi deserves. Malignaggi was good enough to beat a certain level of fighter, but we never had any real indication he could threaten the upper echelon. Mayweather would be a whole different proposition. PBF already picked apart Hatton once. Nothing in the Malignaggi fight suggests a rematch would be any different. PBF would win again.
Monday Nov 24, 2008 02:40:54 PM
SchoolOfHardKnocks:  I wouldn't want to see a Hatton/Mayweather fight either. I was impressed with some of the things I saw him do, like lead with the jab instead of him just jumping in like Pacquiao. His feints were good and he had decent head movement. With all of that said beating Lazcano and over rated Paulie doesn't quite make him a terror all of a sudden. I would like to see him fight Judah. Zab is slower plus he can't take a punch that well. And REALTALK who is Bradshaw? I know who Bradley is but not Bradshaw. Timothy Bradley I'm not impressed with. He is not battle tested yet.
Monday Nov 24, 2008 03:17:11 PM
donputo69 eating subways:  fatton vs scareweather2?....give me a break....listen...if scareweather comes out of retirement, he needs to fight margarito, cotto, or williams...period.....who wants to see a fatton vs scareweather again....give me a **bleek break**...if anything, people wanna see fatton vs pacman next...don't worry about dlh's next opponent...we already know who he's gonna callout...yep...ivan calderon....you heard it here first...holla back!!!!
Monday Nov 24, 2008 05:09:28 PM
El Marcachimba:  Hatton has no business at 147 POUNDS!!!!!!! Before a rematch with Floyd (highly doubted) he should rematch Collazo and if and only if he beats Collazo he should consider staying. Still i don´t think he hasa chance against any other 147 poumd fighter. berto, cotto and clottey should be interesting to watch (wont beat them) should never fight Cintron,Quintana or -margarito.
Monday Nov 24, 2008 05:34:06 PM
theboyb901@yahoo.com:  No way Ricky Hatton could beat Floyd, not even on Floyd's off night.
Monday Nov 24, 2008 06:19:49 PM
in touch :  lot of u dudes know the game. why would we wanna see mayweather hatton 2? it would be more of the same. i'd rather see pacman vs hatton. now there is a scrap. two of the most exciting fighters in the game. anyone that disagrees with pacman being the most exciting fighter in 2 decades isn't listening to what exciting is. exciting is not jones, standing around picking his shots and playing peek-a-boo. exciting is not mayweather, beating fighters in one-sided scraps and not trying to get them out. exciting is no odh, who decides to run and hold the last 4 rounds of a fight. exciting is pacman who goes all out every round of every fight. feel me? pacman vs. hatton. ultra exciting. it's hagler vs hearns, with pacman as hagler, knocking hatton out in 3 rounds.
Monday Nov 24, 2008 06:19:49 PM
andy from newcastle:  Ricky v Pacman, #1 choice. If not then Ricky against any of the other top lightweights, bringing them up rather than him moving to welter and failing again. Baby Bull would be a great choice, or the Galaxxy Warrior. Floyd would just whup Ricky quicker than before at welter. Toonoy
Monday Nov 24, 2008 06:42:35 PM
Real Talk:  Sweet Baby Jesus !!!! This guy said Mayweather vs. Calzaghe ...lmao . That's the dumbest ____ i've heard since I've been in here . He should be banned from this sight forever .
Monday Nov 24, 2008 07:41:12 PM
donputo69 scratching my ingrown toenail:  hey real talk?...that's not a dumb comment...lol...haven't you realize that this is fantasy boxing?...thanks to pacquiao moving up all these weightclasses, boxing has become very interesting....we all can dream of big fights...for example....calderon vs valuev?....how about tyson vs arce?...here's another one...klitschko vs vazquez?....here's another good one....donputo69 vs ron borges?....you see...all of these fights will be ppv classics....holla back!!!!!
Monday Nov 24, 2008 07:56:44 PM
Real Talk sipping a blackeye about to get on my routine:  My bad ..... I meant Bradley , like I typed in the Fatton Schmatton page . Knocks you say he aint tested .....I wonder why is that ? He aint do nothing but beat Junior Witter for the strap . The guy that hattons been ducking for years and too shook to fight . Evidently you aint been watching his fights . That would be a nightmare for Hatton . I got Juan Diaz beating the breaks off Hatton.... his jab is too good ...period . Like I said I wasn't impressed with Hatton's performance at all . Don't get me wrong I kinda like Hatton...seems like a cool guy who aint afraid to scrap . But his game's got some gaping holes in it . He needs to tighten that defense up . Timothy Bradley is a special fighter . I think he's gonna clean out 140 unless he gets ducked and ignored , which considering what i' ve seen from him so far is a high possible . I think Zab would catch Hatton cause he's too easy to hit right now . You can't say Zab can't take a punch cuz he took a couple bundles from Cotto for how many rds. ??? Was it 9 or 11 . I don't think he wants to risk it . Zab hits harder than PBF . I don't see any easy wins for him . Just being real . lol Dueces
Monday Nov 24, 2008 08:03:40 PM
Real Talk lmao at Don Puto :  LOLolol......This is true ..... This is true ...... SAD .....but true . Yell at me !!!
Monday Nov 24, 2008 08:10:18 PM
donputo69 trying to takeout my ingrown toenail:  lol...you see...it is true real talk...thanks to pacquiao....lol...my best one of all is tyson vs arce....that should be made asap...just imagine tyson biting arce's ears?...arce will retaliate by laughing out loud.....then arce will tickle tyson's belly.....and then at the end, arce will give tyson a lollipop...godbless fantasy boxing....holla back!!!!
Monday Nov 24, 2008 08:20:50 PM
SchoolOfHardKnocks checking out a fight between Matthew Saad Muhammad and Dwight Braxton:  Donputo..I'm feelin u on that fight, I would have to go with Arce taking that because Tyson gets tired after 4 or 5 rounds. I would definitely pay $200 on PPV to see that. RealTalk, I have known Bradley since he was 10 years old training at the Palm Springs boxing club. No he is not battle tested. Beating Witter is nothing. What did Zab do to Witter? Why do you say Hatton was ducking Witter but you never say any person that has called out Pacquiao. Get off that bandwagon man...lol You are riding shotgun on the wagon I see. Zab got hit with 1 punch by Tszyu and got knocked down twice...lol Hey RealTalk or whoever want to answer this!! I'm going to give you there nicknames you give me there real names. Who was Bump City? Who was Brockton Blackbuster..Who was The Explosive Thin Man..I will leave it at 3 because I know you are scratching your head..lol
Monday Nov 24, 2008 09:30:01 PM
donputo69 eating pizza:  I can answer one of your questions hardnocks...I believe bump city was johnny bumphus?....he was one bad you know what I mean....but I believe he was on drugs right?...im not really too familiar with him, but I heard about him....holla back!!!!
Monday Nov 24, 2008 09:57:40 PM
Son of Sam Peter:  Why NOT Calzaghe - Mayweather at 168? Seriously, why not? Mayweather retired undefeated and as the P4P #1 fighter in the world. Calzaghe is currently undefeated and it can be argued that he is P4P #1 fighter in the world. Two guys, undefeated, with passionate fan bases, both with a claim to be the pound for pound best. It's historic. And tell me it doesn't make $en$e. In the past, it was not unusual for the welterweight champion to move up and challenge the middleweight champion. The same for the middleweight champion moving up to light heavyweight, and so on (this is not unprecedented). Mayweather's a junior middleweight and Calzaghe a super middleweight. It's very doable. Would Floyd's speed not present a problem for Joe? I'm shocked this fight is never mentioned. Hell, PacMan is taking MORE of a leap fighting Oscar than Floyd would Joe (or certainly tantamount). Imagine what beating Joe would do for Floyd's legacy? If Mayweather wants a challenge, and if he wants to make SERIOUS $$$, then this is the one he should lobby for. Yeah, it's a SUPER long shot, but it's a superfight -a legitimate superfight- and that should be the inspiration for Floyd to train like he's never trained before. The cash and his legacy. Mayweather challenging Calzaghe at 168 is the most intriguing fight in the sport. Forget Oscar and these exhibitions that have no titles at stake. This would be history, with real consequences, a fight for the ages.
Monday Nov 24, 2008 10:20:43 PM
Son of Sam Peter:  I don't get it, everyone's FINE with Manny v. Oscar but the thought of Mayweather v. Calzaghe is borderline blasphemous. These are probably the same guys that would rather see Mayweather and Oscar do it again. I'm a proponent of real fighters taking on real challenges, especially GREAT fighters. When Billy Conn fought Joe Louis, was that crazy?? Maybe a similar scenario would unfold, with Floyd ahead on points and being stopped late. Who knows? But it IS possible to make the fight, and there's no bigger fight in all of boxing save Wlad v. Vitali.
Monday Nov 24, 2008 10:41:25 PM
SchoolOfHardKnocks watching one of my favorite fighters of all time Aaron The Hawk Pryor:  DonPuto..Good job, how do you know about Johnny Bump City Bumphus? He was a NY fighter. You are right he was a very good fighter. He would have been on the 76 Olympic team if they didn't boycott. So you don't know the other 2 names? lol What's up with that
Monday Nov 24, 2008 11:12:45 PM
TOMMY R:  1st off although he was " expected " to beat paulie plenty of people thought paulie would out slick him and win and hattons best days were behind him, regardless of what 1 might think of paulie hatton looked great and that was his most impressive performance since the kyszu fight, he finally got back to head movement and quick angles, 2nd off i think he deserves some serious credit for coming to the states and fighting champion after champion right here in the us rather then stay in the uk were he can prob make more money and certainly put more asses in the seats, 3rd off hatton is a real good fighter, u dont go 45-1 ( loss to 1 of the greatest and can be excepted) against solid comp with out being a top notch world class fighter so his win sat did not surprise me 1 but cause the only way he loses is if he declined that much and it was just the opposite, 4th off i thought the mayweather v hatton fight was a very good 1, it was entertaining and not 1 sided as people suggest, he gave floyd some real trouble early and floyd as he always does w any1 he fights studied his opp and took him apart from rd 6 foward, end of the day i cant make a dlh- hatton predication til we see what oscar has left vs pacman in a tough fight which i think he wins but regardless i would loveeeeeee to see hatton vs pac, thats a dream fight right there and if pac should lose to oscar big deal, it wont diminish him a bit just as hatton wasnt diminished fighting floyd, hatton deserves our respect, hes a real fighter
Monday Nov 24, 2008 11:43:45 PM
Ben O'connor:  jimmy wild? explosive little man? was that the guy who had about 200 fights?
Tuesday Nov 25, 2008 06:45:47 AM
Primo:  The Hitman still lunges instead of throwing a sharp jab as evidenced by the number of times his arm ended up wrapped around the Magic Man's neck. Ricky vs. Manny is the fight I'd like to see. Pretty Boy will beat the snot out of Ricky for a second time - I don't want to see that reply.
Tuesday Nov 25, 2008 08:48:54 AM
SchoolOfHardKnocks:  BenO'Conner..good guess but no cigar..lol Who was known as the EXPLOSIVE THIN MAN and THE BROCKTON BLACKBUSTER? I'm suprised that you can't get the Brockton blackbuster. Most eastcoast guys would know who that is if you follow boxing...lol
Tuesday Nov 25, 2008 09:36:11 AM
Fistic Fury:  HELLO PEOPLE, ROCKY MARCIANO RING ANY BELLS. COME ON...... ARGUELLO IS THE EXPLOSIVE THIN MAN, I only found that out a fortnight ago when I watched one of his fights on KOTV, otherwise I wouldn't of stood a chance with it.
Tuesday Nov 25, 2008 10:31:35 AM
Radam G aka Humble PRG :  SchoolOfHardKnocks, you are a hard man. And this time you are a wrong man. Sorry! I have to checkmate you. Johnny "Bump City" Bumphus was not a New York fighter. And he was no where close to making the 1976 Olympics. Johnny is from Washingon State, but he fought out of Tennesse in making the 1980 U.S. Olympic Team. He would have been in Moscow at the Games in 1980 if U.S. Prez Carter would not have been playing politics with the USSR for invading Afghanistan. The guy who won the 1976 Olympics at lighwelterweight was Sugar Ray Leonard. But he was one of four boxers who could have won. The 139 lb division was talented. Pete Steward, Ronnie Shields or Bruce Curry could have also won the Games that years, too. These dudes were good, and they gave Sugarman hell. Holla!
Tuesday Nov 25, 2008 01:24:12 PM
Sailorguy:  Fistic man u beat me to it how come it took so long to identify rocky marciano! Anyways u guys already know whos next for hatton dlh will beat pac man and already said he would have no problem fighting in england.
Tuesday Nov 25, 2008 03:45:58 PM
Ben O'connor:  marciano was the blockton BLOCKbuster not blackbuster!!! thought it was a trick question haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. thought there was a black guy called blackbuster hahahahahahahahahaha apologies HK. LMFAO!!!
Tuesday Nov 25, 2008 04:57:22 PM
SchoolOfHardKnocks watching Manny get KO'd by 3K Battery:  RadamG, you are absolutely right, my error...lol I was thinking of someone else at the time I was writing this from NY and it was the 80 Olympics..not 76, You are right about Johnny from Washington State but I didn't know anything about Tennessee. The only guy I knew from Tennessee was John Tate. Radam G, I'm going to have to checkmate you now. It wasn't Bruce Curry, it was his brother Donald...lol Also the guy I was thinking out of NY who was going to be on that 80 team was Alex Ramos. Good memory RadamG. Fistic, good job..yes it was Alexis Arguello..But that wasn't the answer on The Brockton Blackbuster..It wasn't Marciano at all. BenO'Conner Marciano was the Brockton Blockbuster..lol
Tuesday Nov 25, 2008 05:27:53 PM
Fistic Fury:  Thought it said blockbuster, put us out of our misery, I haven't a clue about BLACKbuster.
Tuesday Nov 25, 2008 06:01:44 PM
Ben O'connor:  i have checked and jimmy wilde was the original explosive thin man!!!!!!!!! my bad putting little man by the way!!! i was right tho!!! dont know bout the others! im english, old american olympians aint my strong point boys ya know!!! hahah
Tuesday Nov 25, 2008 07:22:40 PM
Radam G aka Humble PRG checkmating:  CHECKMATE! Wrong again, SchoolOfHardKnocks! Donald Curry would've went to the 1980 Olympic Games. He was the man at 147lbs. His older brother Bruce was a participant in the 1976 Olympic Trials. He lost to Ray Leonard in the finals. The middle Curry brother, Graylin fought at 112 lbs in 1976 in U.S. competition. SchoolOfHardKnocks, for your info Pete Steward and Ronnie Shield caused a major scare to the powers that be. They were much better amateurs than Ray, but not as corporation friendly, appealing, colorful and charismatic. Holla!

2009 Reader Of The Year Weighs In On Legacies Of Pacquiao And Mayweather
"Pacquiao has proven....in the ring... time and time again that he is the greatest of this time. He has earned his respect. He begs for nothing. He is a man content with his growth, his family and his achievements. A man the world has now turned it's eyes to behold. Floyd Mayweather is not even close in stature. He may possess the greatest skills but he is not the Face of Boxing today. Google Manny Pacquiao. There are 20 million searches. Google Floyd. There are 6.5 million. Look at the NYTimes, the Wall Street Journal and Time. Count how many words were used these past years to mention Floyd Mayweather. Then count the words still being printed about Manny. And keep counting. As I've said many times, Floyd has been too clever by half. He has short changed his public.....and has out-smarted himself. Manny will fight but a few more times. Enjoy it while you can. He is an all time great pugilist. Floyd, with all of his remarkable skills lack the will to be truly great in the biggest sense of the word. His legacy will look more like Holmes that Ali. He has earned it." ---November is half-way gone, but we don't need to keep counting ballots. It's a landslide. Fe'Roz has won the 2009 Reader of the Year award. His comments add to the website immeasurably, and he epitomizes the thoughtful, respectful, educated fan of pugilism we strive to cater to at TSS. Congrats, Fe'Roz, and please accept my thanks for being the valued member of this community that you are. Sincerely, Editor Mike
