At the final press conference, in NYC on Tuesday. Could Pavlik be the man to convince Hopkins that the promotional sphere is the safer space for him to inhabit?

HOPKINS Says Saturday Could Be Last Fight

By Rick Folstad

The old quote machine still hasn’t saddled up and trotted off into the sunset of a legendary career.

Despite what the calendar and his hand speed might tell him, Bernard “The Executioner“ Hopkins isn’t ready to walk away from the best job he’s had since they let him out of the hoosegow.

And who can blame him? After 20 years and 54 fights, it’s got to be tough to suddenly go cold turkey. It’s like quitting chocolate. It’s not healthy for you, but that’s not going to keep you from reaching into the candy jar again and again.

Maybe the only way some fighters retire is when it’s the only choice they have.

At 43, Hopkins still has some fight left in him. Or at least that’s what he keeps telling us. We’ll know a lot more on Saturday night when he fights undefeated knockout artist Kelly Pavlik at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall (HBO, pay-per-view).

It’s a non-title bout at a catch weight of 170 pounds, which is somewhere between super-middleweight and two extra helpings of pie and ice cream.

If Hopkins’ fighting skills have slipped, his gift for delivering a sermon hasn’t. He still knows how to lecture, how to orate, how to keep everything in perspective by referring to himself in the third person. Which he does a lot.

But that’s always been Hopkins’ way. Preacher, ex-con, philosopher, fighter - you get to choose which Hopkins you’ll remember best when he finally does ride off.

“My motivation (for still fighting) is back pay,” Hopkins said on a recent conference call. “I’m a late bloomer in everything in boxing. If you look at my history the last five years have been a blessing for Bernard Hopkins and his family and it reflects that I‘ve done well. I‘ve made some great investments.”

Bet on it.

Back pay might be an excuse to fight, but it doesn’t sound like a motivator. You have to figure Hopkins has enough tucked away to survive the winter.

Apparently, he wants to keep his current position because he doesn’t believe he’s over the hill yet, and few other lines of work offer the kind of  paycheck he’s used to cashing.

Besides, no one has given him a reason to consider quitting. Yeah, he’s lost three of his last five fights, but he was not much more than a flip-of-the-coin away from winning all three. And the losses were against two of the best fighters in the world - Jermain Taylor and Joe Calzaghe. Win a few close rounds here and there and he’s still the middleweight champ of the world.

“If I’m not the same person I was in 2001,” he said. “Then I want someone to prove it by putting me on my (butt), by making me look like I shouldn‘t be in the ring.”

Pavlik has the opportunity. He knows dropping Hopkins even for an eight-count would put him in lofty company, up there all alone with a guy named Segie.

In all his fights, Hopkins has only been on the canvas twice, and that was in the same fight against Segundo Mercado almost 14 years ago. Since then, the only time he’s been on his butt is between rounds.

“(Dropping) Hopkins would be a huge statement,“ Pavlik said. “I mean, he’s never been stopped. How good a chin does he have?“

How good a right hand do you have?

If this does turn out to be Hopkins’ farewell fight, he’s going to be missed by those of us who have gotten used to listening to him expound on what it’s like to be an ex-con, to live in Philadelphia, to fight for two decades, to be cheered in a parade through downtown Philly, and to fight at a level few fighters will ever reach. We’ll even miss Bernard Hopkins always saying “Bernard Hopkins.”

Finally, asked if his fight with Pavlik might possibly be his last, Hopkins bobbed and weaved his way around the question.

“Anything is possible,” he said. “It’s possible that it won’t be my last fight and it’s possible that it will be my last fight. At 43 - and again, I‘m going to use what most people always remind me of, my age - I don’t plan for boxing in the future, I just plan to fight in the historic big fights that mean something.

“Enjoy me while I’m here. Enjoy (Saturday) with Kelly Pavlik. Enjoy that night. And then, if Bernard Hopkins feels that he wants to come back and do something after the victory, then we’ll deal with that.“

Better take a look, Bernard. The sun is almost setting.

TheRealDeal:  I hope this is Hopkins last fight, I'm so tired of watching him do the same thing then when he loses he has an excuse. I'm tired of Holyfield, Delahoya, Mosley and Jones, Jr. as well. Boxing don't need these guys they are hurting the game.

PETE STEWARD:  OH PLEASE REAL DEAL! B-Hop is credit to the the Sprort unlike Tyson Camacho & Mayorga He's redifined what you can do if you work hard never quit. Boxing saved Bernard And Bernard has help save boxing. If your so tired of him then DON'T WATCH THE FIGHT! Pavlik and the other young superstars owe him Mosley and Jones alot.

Radam G aka Humble PRG:  You know that I agree with, Pete Steward -- a good boxer/fighter/crowd pleaser in his day. However, you know me. I have some to say. The Executioner in Hopkins will B-Hop(ping) away, because he doesn't want "The Ghost" to lay away him to sleep. The Father Time in B-Hop should be frighten to heck of The Ghost. But he's not. (Because with all these old guns still around -- blazeless and off target -- it's obvious that Father Time has senile dementia.) Bernard says that he "ain't ever been afraid of no ghost." So! I can't see a Ghostxecutioner -- or can you execute a ghost -- showing up in the slightly past-his-time B-NOT, I mean B-Hop! He has a very SLIM chance of winning. Too bad that The Ghost -- that he "ain't afraid of" -- SLIM is. And has already been spoked off the Boardwalk in Atlantic City. On B-Hop, The Ghost may just beat his behind into retirement without any pity. Holla!

Radam G aka Humble PRG:  *been spooked off the Boardwalk.....

TSS super middleweight champion donputo69:  I wish he could of retire a longtime ago...listen...he's been there done that...I don't think he's still fighting for pride...he's fighting for money right now...but...but....I wanna see what's his next excuse is gonna be when he loses the fight...I got one though...and it goes like this...check it..DAMN...I LOSE TO ANOTHER WHITEBOY?...YOU JUDGES GOT THIS ALL WRONG...I MEAN...LOOK AT HIS FACE?...LOOK AT MINE...THIS IS B.S...I QUIT....lol...there you have...hopkins last fight...he himself said it...I quit....lmfaooo...holla back!!!!

nick:  i wish b-hop would'nt retire but like my coach oways says a great think has to come to an eand at some point hopkins has down great in the sport of boxing he has oways respectid boxing and i think he's gonna beat pavlik???

TheRealDeal:  PeteSteward, here we go again, Dude you don't watch boxing much do you? Stop listening to the media and watch a fight. So you like to see Bernard dive in amateurish and holding right! These young fighters today don't owe Hopkins, mosley, jones jr nothing! They haven't paved the way for nobody. Exactly, Delahoya which is Hopkins entire promotion company is fighting for MONEY. Like DonPuto said, Hopkins should have retired a long time ago. You say that boxing saved him and he saved boxing. No you are correct about the first Boxing saved him. But he still thinks someone is scared of him when he uses his prison mentality. Calzaghe sure the hell wasn't. Remember him making a fool out of his self saying he would never lose to a white boy! Well he did and it might just happen again on Saturday. Go Hopkins!! lol
Wednesday Oct 15, 2008
TheRealDeal:  Donputo, Radam G, You hit it right on the nose! Thank you. I will NEVER let a WHITE boy beat me!!...lol Even his trainer John David Jackson says that Bernard needs to throw more punches. It's great to have defense but how can you win a fight if you don't score. Another sign of senile Dementia..lol You could see him in the Calzaghe fight when the bell would sound to end the round..Where is my corner? lol One time he stopped and turned around and said oh! it's over there...lol
Wednesday Oct 15, 2008
TheRealDeal:  Don't get me wrong, I respect all of Hopkins accomplishments and he was a great figther But one day father time comes knocking on your door and there is nothing you can do. Just hope it's not this saturday. Remember Holyfield, doesn't know when to retire. Long live Lennox Lewis..Marvin Haglar!!
Wednesday Oct 15, 2008
Kool-Aid:  Saturday WILL BE Hopkins' last fight...thanks for the memories, Bernard, but it's time for the GHOST...Pavlik UD12 over Hopkins decisively.
Wednesday Oct 15, 2008
manboobs the great:  Don't count Hopkins out yet. If he's serious about this being his last fight (BIG IF). We might see an aggressive, go for broke Hopkins ( A guy can dream can't he! ). He does still have the power and timing to drop world class guys. If he can nail Joe C. with a sneak right, Pavlik will be the broad side of the barn. I like Pavlik don't get me wrong, but 'Nard will find a way to make him look bad. I don't know if he will officially win,,, but he will have a case that he should have.

Dr.Votts:  D@mn Radam G , don't quit your day job . You should've been a cop. Hip Hop....With that freestyle you bound to get shot. he he he . I have to disagree with some of yall in here. B- Hop is a boxing thesaurus . He knows every trick in the book. Don't sleep on my mans. Pavlik aint seen anybody like Hopkins in his career . In fact his last couple of fights he's had easy targets who's skills/discipline/intelligence were not on the level of Hopkins . JERMAIN TAYLOR/ EDISON MIRANDA WERE EASY TARGETS !!!! Look at the first Taylor - Pavlik fight . In the seventh round he hit Taylor with a jab, jab-cross, and then another jab-cross ALL FLUSH !!!! ANYBODY WOULD'VE WENT DOWN FROM THAT !!! eDISON MIRANDA COULDN'T SLIP NOTHING !!!! When I see Hopkins fight I don't see lack of action. I see TECHNIQUE . yOU COULD TAKE A LOT OF FILM OF HIM ON HOW TO BOX . Only thing I'm concerned with is if Hopkins is beleiving what people are saying about him. Because if that's the case then that's his will that's weakening, and that more than anything is what got him to where he is now . B-Hop will give Pavlik the hardest fight of his career and definately can walk away with a W . The judges may try to stick'em though. Shalom

kelvvv:  I got B-Hop by UD. Saturday night will be Pavlik's first day of School and Mr. Hopkins will be the teacher. The lesson will be, Hopkins is not Con Edison Miranda or Jermain Gaylor or ZerWHO?che
Friday Oct 17, 2008
theboyb901:  B-Hop UD....if Kelly wins he's entering a whole new world of fighters!
Friday Oct 17, 2008
Radam G aka Humble PRG:  Hey doc, I don't like your diagnose. I want a second opinion, lmfao. Holla!
Saturday Oct 18, 2008
Dr. Votts:  WHAT WAS THAT RADAM G ???? ..... YEAH...... TAKE YOUR MEDICINE AND HOLLA AT THE DOC LATER !!!!! HA HA !!!!! HOPKINS , HOPKINS HOPKINS HOPKINS !!!!!!! SHALOM

No Love For The Modern Glove
Fight fans who are of the opinion that modern boxers could have held their own against guys from earlier eras always seem to ignore the fact that boxers back in the day were more durable than modern ones and had to be because of the different conditions under which they fought. For one thing, the lighter, non-water-resistant, horsehair gloves used in earlier eras required one to have stronger hand bones than the heavier, foam-padded, water resistant gloves used today, so any modern fighter who suffers chronic hand injuries would never have lasted very long in bouts fought in earlier eras (unless, of course, they took a little off of every punch that they threw, which, of course, would have made them much less effective fighters). ---TSS reader Feed The Cat offers some perspective on the Old vs. New debate
