| Ramos finally got that elusive title shot, in his final fight as a pro. Since retiring, he's had his share of fights that have tested him as much as any in-ring outing. |

Alex Ramos Fights Back From Edge Of Death
By Shawn Murphy
The old saying goes: once a fighter, always a fighter. Alex Ramos hasn’t fought in the ring for almost fourteen years but he continues to exemplify that old saying.
Most boxing fans know that Ramos was found in his apartment in late August, unconscious and barely alive; he was in a coma for several days with a grim prognosis. Jump ahead now to October and Ramos tells me by phone, “I’m doing just fine, I’m doing great. I have a lot of doctor’s appointment and physical therapy appointments but I’m doing real well. The doctor originally wanted me to walk with a walker, but I told him no way, never. I have used a cane for awhile but that’s gone as well.”
When asked about the outpouring of support he received, Ramos said he appreciates everyone who was rooting for him, that someone was looking out for him. “I’ve got some beautiful letters, it was so cool how many.”
Ramos, who had a 39-10-6 mark during a pro career that ran from 1980-1994, says there will not be any lasting effects. “All I need to do is take my medication and continue therapy, I’ll be fine. I’m ready to rumble,” he said.
As for taking any time off from his duties at the Retired Boxers Foundation, Ramos says, “No way! Since I have been out of the hospital I have been working as hard as I can, that won’t stop.”
We all wish Ramos much continued success in his comeback. Please check out the Retired Boxers Foundation that Alex holds so dear to his heart. www.retiredboxers.com .

Short and refreshing piece. Thanks for letting us know that Alex has risen, and will not be going down for the 10 count any time soon. Alex was always a great guy. We use to call another "that kid" -- actually we called all the boxers that. The old reporters use to be amazed. They didn't realize that that was one of the figures of speech in the game of child and young fighters. I guess I'll have to call my man, Alex, "Old gray" now. I'm stll black headed -- I guess it is those Asian genes. Hey! Cut it out! To all you smarty pants, I don't play hair dye. Any way, I'm glad that THE KID is doing better and will -- no doubt -- get better. Holla!

Alex Ramos was an amazing boxer. RingsideBooksdotcom rates Alex as the 6th best New York City Golden Gloves Champion OF ALL TIME--behind 1) SUGAR RAY ROBINSON...2) VINCE SHOMO...3) EMILE GRIFFITH...4) MARK BRELAND...5) HOWARD DAVIS...6) ALEX RAMOS.
Ramos was a great boxer-puncher. He hit hard with either hand; he wasn't fleet-footed, but you couldn't hit him. He was crafty and, as such, he could take chances. He was pretty fearless and, believe me, you did not want to be in the same ring with him, unless you were the referee...Keep punching, Champ!

Shawn...Thank you! Alex remains an asset to the sport and while he is one hundred percent disabled, he continues to help ANY fighter who needs assistance, some of whom are far better off than he is. He LIVES for his brothers in boxing. If you admired him as a fighter, how can you not admire him for his selfless devotion to his brotherhood of boxers? Alex says he's gonna die a fighter, and I can vouch for that!

Alex my friend mi amigo!!!
No wonder I was not getting a call back from you! I was wondering what happened! WOW..I did not know about your hospitalization. But I'm thrilled to learn that you are well and back on your feet my brother!
Alex and I grew up together in the South Bronx and he has always been a warrior! We had not communicated with each other for over 30 years until thank GOD for the internet I was able to track him down. And I was not surprised to see the wonderful things he is doing outside the ring. He has always been the consumate gentleman with a huge heart.
Give me a call my friend, you have my number. This is Edwin in San Antonio Texas.
God bless you and please let me know if you need anything!
Blessings!
Edwin

Angie And Goody...23 Years Later
Twenty three years later after they seconded Marvin Hagler and Ray Leonard in Las Vegas, Goody Petronelli and Angelo Dundee crossed paths again. This time, it was at Foxwoods. Photo/friend of TSS "The Iceman" John Scully reports there were only pleasantries exchanged. Goody didn't debate the split decision victory enjoyed by Leonard, which to this day Hagler disputes.
