So, let's play matchmaker, shall we? Who would you have fight Dawson next?

Welcome To The Big Time, Chad Dawson

By Michael Woods

This was a coming out party at the Palms in Las Vegas on Saturday evening. Chad Dawson announced loudly and clearly, with fast fists and stunning  combos, that his talent is the real deal, and that some big fights in and around 175 pounds are going to come his way. Dawson handled Antonio Tarver, and scored a unanimous decision that was televised on Showtime. Dawson scored a knockdown in the 12th round, and with that capper, he wrested the baton from the old guard at light heavyweight.

The scores read: 118-109, 117-110, 117-110, but you shouldn’t read those scores and assume Tarver stank out the joint. In fact, Tarver’s was reasonably sharp, but it was Dawson’s excellence that carried the night. Tarver was willing, and pretty able, but Dawson was in another league.

Dawson said that Tarver had more than he thought he would have. He was informed by Jim Gray afterwards that Floyd Mayweather said he was the best pound for pound in the world, and Dawson said that Floyd called him before the bout in the locker room, and told him he was the P4P best. Tarver said that he'd like another crack at Dawson.

Both fighters weighed 174, but Tarver had to really torture himself to make it. The Connecticut resident Dawson (age 26, with a 26-0 mark coming in) gave up the WBC 175 pound strap for this event. Tarver, a Floridian, brought a 27-4 record. He held the IBF and IBO 175 pound belts coming in the tussle.

The two southpaws jabbed to get loose in the first. Dawson’s hand speed looked to be of a higher caliber. “Looking good, baby,” said Dawson’s trainer, Eddie Muhammad enthusiastically. In the second, Dawson’s left hit home to the Tarver body. His right uppercut also paid off. His movement, too, gave Tarver worry. He pressed forward, as Dawson moved laterally, and set the pace. In the third, Dawson got the crowd jazzed with stiff combos. Then, Tarver hit with the left uppercut and straight left; he usually takes awhile to get warmed up. He looked warm at the end of three.

In the fourth, Dawson went to work to the body. He went low, then high, and the crispness in his tosses was bound to affect the judges. He doubled and tripled up the jab, and though many were blocked, he was telling the judges that he wanted this, badly. In round five, Dawson’s hands were even faster. A straight left banged off Tarver, but he kept pressing forward. In the sixth, Tarver came out fired up. He knew he was lagging on the cards, even if the moronic open scoring system wasn’t activated. His did more work, and cracked a left to the chin that landed flush. Dawson took the round off, and Tarver just missed a couple lefts that could’ve been game changers. Would Tarver expend too much energy, or could his stamina hold?

In the seventh, Dawson roared back. Body shots with both hands scored, and Dawson made sure to stick, and then move. Tarver leaned back against the ropes, and covered up late in the round. He had no answer for Bad Chad’s launches. In the eighth, Tarver plodded ahead. He ached to land the straight left home run ball. Dawson chose his spots, but when he threw, it was showy. In round nine, it was more of the same for Dawson. An uppercut snapped Tarver’s head back and one wondered if maybe Dawson could stop him. Floyd Mayweather spoke after the round to Karin Bryant, and told her that Dawson is now the pound for pound best fighter in the world. You read that right. He said he was staying retired, for the record.

In round ten, Tarver kept hanging in. He didn’t get as discouraged as you might’ve expected, or quit, like Samuel Peter did in the fight that preceded this one on Showtime. Dawson’s guns were blazing at the end of the round. In the 11th, Tarver kept moving forward, and his face wasn’t looking like it had been hammered. But believe me, he was eating mad leather. “You got to kncok him out to win,” Tarver’s trainer Jimmy Williams said. In the 12th round, Dawson scored a knockdown with a counter right hook. He was up quickly. He actually hit with an uppercut, and tried, down to the wire, to pull off a Hail Mary shot.

Kool-Aid:  Chad is great and he proved it. He beat Johnson & Tarver in back to back fights. We just saw why Calzaghe elected to fight RJJ and then retire...he doesn't want to fight Chad or Pavlik! Don & Guido...be serious. Chad is bad!

dan:  there you go donputo thats why i didnt respond to you when you started talking right before the fight i am not a cheerleader so the fight speaks for itself and like i was saying about chads skills before floyd jr said chad is best pound for pound and u know what he is. no one fights like now that.combos movement power and speed. i just hope my favorite fighter of all time doesnt fight him next and thats roy jones jr. i think jones has got a shot against calzaghe and would love to see him and chad both in their primes but jones is too old now and i dont want to see that happen to him.

mortcola:  After being beaten by Hopkins, Tarver talked about not being marked up or swollen. He said it again after being outclassed by Dawson. Tarver should realize that when his best talent is for not swelling, its time to get out and do commentary.

andy from newcastle:  TARVER WAS BEATEN LIKE A RED HEADED STEP CHILD. But Bad Chad still couldn't shut up his big mouth after the fight. I expected Tarver to be talking some gibberish about how Chad was a reflection of him when he was young, blah, blah. But no, he wants to fight him again tomorrow. Wake up Antonio. YOU ARE AN OLD MAN, who most no one had heard of before your first loss to RJJ. I only thought Tarver actually won on his own merit, one round, ironically the 12th, which I gave as a 9-9 due to the technical knockdown. Dawson gave him rounds 3 and 6 to further show his complete superiority. Chad can rule this division for a long time, and hopefully can tempt some of the middle/super middles to move up and mix it with him. Kudos to Glen Johnson, who I thought won, but Dawson has stepped up since, and perhaps because of, that fight. Toonoy

andy from newcastle:  @Mortcola. Loved your comment about Tarver's best talent being not swelling. Brilliant man. Toonoy

Fistic Fury:  I got this wrong, im not a fan of either but I thought Tarver would old man his way to a decision. Thats the best i've saw Chad but he ain't nowhere near pound 4 pound, not even top 10. I only gave Antonio rounds 3 and 6 and a share of 12 due to the knockdown. Tarver seemed dead after round 6 and had no zip in his shots all night.

Pete Steward:  Diaconu is the monster Chad ducked and dropped his WBC Strap to fight old man tarver for. Diaconu maybe the real BADMAN at 175lbs. If Chad wants to be a real superstar & Champion he'll have to fight Diaconu to prove it. And while he's at it fight Glen Johnson again to take any doubt he's the King of men at 175lbs.

Anony:  :::::: FLOYD MAYWEATHER should keep his mouth shut and not participate in interviews unless he is coming back to fight the top welterweights he has been running from. I guess I'm not the only one who care less what's his opinion. I'm truly sorry for paying PPV on him. Worst PPV ever with his "girley, don't hit me" style. Now he wants people to recognize him as a great personality?? After what he said to HBO (racist comment) and the "I'm better than Sugar Ray Robinson" comment, he doesn't deserve attention. Networks should not give him any exposure. He should stay quiet and keep laughing at us who payed to watch him in the past. You can have all the money in the world but RESPECT is not something you buy. CHICKEN BOXER! Pacquiao (even though he is fighting Oscar's circus) deserves to be call the P4P ten times more than the "foul mouth chicken scare boring style" Floyd Fadeweather. Come back and fight for respect Floyd!!!!!!!

Waldorf:  Let Diaconu fight Glen, or Traver make his bones because he is a hype right now. Chad gets the winner of Bhop or Palivk big payday for his hard work.

Radam G aka Humble PRG:  Super Bad Chad Dawson!!!!! Enough said! Holla!
Sunday Oct 12, 2008 02:34:27 PM
Real Talk:  Man !!!! Tarver got slapped around something terrible. He was blocking a lot of those shots though, but clearly outclassed . He looked way too slow. His punches had no snap. He's got a good shot at commentator, but not top of the Light Heavy . 11 - 4 this year. Holla
Sunday Oct 12, 2008 03:35:22 PM
Pete Steward:  GREAT IDEA WALDORF! Johnson Vs Dioncono is an even BETTER fight, a Fight of the year FIGHT. The Young Bull Vs the Old Bull. And the winner is a Mandatory for Chad. But your dreaming if you think B-HOP is going to fight Bad Chad. And Pavlik will go after Calzaghe for the Big money never mind he still has Arthur Abraham to deal with remember he's the Mdwt (160lbs) Champion. He’s just coming up for the BIG MONEY with B-Hop & maybe Calzaghe. Bad Chad NO WAY! Not enough money. I'm afraid Chad has to deal with the challengers in his own kingdom 175lbs Johnson or Dioncono. Heavy is the head that wears the crown and Dawson is the King.............For now!

Radam G aka Humble PRG:  God Bless America, The Beautiful! It's wonderful and is a great democracy. Long live the beauty of free speech. Suppression of it is not happening in the money-making section of the hurt business, and in the minds of freethinkers. Talk is revealing -- not often cheap -- as that maxim goes. Tarver is the trash-talking king of all times. I enjoying hearing him, but hate seeing him. Time to become a commentator. Let him and Money May team up. But Money May will be back in 09 -- The Year of Change. Holla!

rudy:  Chad's legit. period.
Tuesday Oct 14, 2008 06:59:11 AM
Keith:  I must say that I have never been happier to see big mouth Tarver get smacked around like a school yard sissy!
Tuesday Oct 14, 2008 01:14:18 PM
Tyree:  chad dawson is the best boxer in the world i want to see him destroy joe calzache

Suits, Stop Squabbling, And Posturing, AND MAKE FIGHTS!
"Floyd may very well be the most talented boxer but that he does not understand that what the fans, who ultimately pay the bills, watch fights for is entertainment. At the moment, he not only ignores that reality but frankly doesn't seem to care. Neither about our wishes and/or our passion for to see great fights. Thus, there is little Go ... and even less Show. I am vaguely interested in the Business of Boxing. Frankly, it is a mess on a good day and worse on it's worst. I prefer reading the Business pages where brilliant men and women develop skills and strategies to create incredible value and wealth (for themselves and others) in ways far more effectively and meaningfully than those who Rule ...some might say Ruin...this beautiful Sport." --FE'ROZ, speaking for a majority of fight fans
