Who do you think takes it, Tarver or Dawson? Tarver probably won this conference call...

Tarver And Dawson Getting Surlier

By Rick Folstad

They skipped over the pleasantries Tuesday, avoided any kind of verbal handshake and went straight for the jugular, leaving a string of f-bombs in their wake while they argued over who was going to do what to whom. And how many times he was going to do it.

Conference calls can be fun, but they’re not for the entire family. Don’t let the wife and kids get on the line. It’s not church chat.

Former WBC light-heavyweight champ “Bad” Chad Dawson (26-0, 17 KOs), owner of one of the catchier nicknames this side of the Seven Dwarfs, implied that maybe Antonio “Magic Man” Tarver (27-4, 19 KOs) was going to be getting a butt kicking in their IBF light-heavyweight title fight on Oct. 11 on SHOWTIME at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.

Tarver pretty much disagreed with Dawson‘s keen assessment of the situation, mentioning that Dawson has never been in the ring with a guy like Tarver, and will be lucky to get out alive.

Things went downhill from there, but only if you don’t like interruptions, obscenities and veiled threats, with just a sprinkling of answered questions.

Some of us like a little voice raising. Too much politeness on the line and you have to keep slapping yourself to stay awake.

There was no problem staying awake on Tuesday.

Starting out, Dawson said his upcoming fight with Tarver was “by far” the biggest fight of his career, that it was a chance for him to make a statement and to prove he is the best light-heavyweight in the world. He even gave up a title belt to fight Tarver.

Tarver didn’t rank the fight quite that high. He said he’s been fighting big fights most of his life, and this is just another one of the biggies.

“They think they‘re going to have a walk in the park,” Tarver said. “But I‘ve got a lot of Chad Dawsons on my resume. He doesn‘t have one Antonio Tarver on his. He‘s going to get a crash course on what it’s like to be in there with a legendary fighter.“

Tarver, rumored to possess a hearty ego, called Dawson a “decent” fighter, but reminded everyone that it takes more than a decent fighter to beat him.

“The bottom line is, on the night of  Oct. 11, an old man is going to teach a young boy new tricks,” he said.

This fight and these press conferences are another chance for Tarver to remind everyone who he is. He‘s one of the best fighters in any division, but he claims he‘s never gotten the notice and the rave reviews he deserves. He’s the forgotten man in the fight game, a name most people can‘t place right away.

But he’s getting used to being slighted.

“How many times do I have to beat it into their heads that I’m the truth before they come out and admit it?” he said. “They’ve been denying me and doubting me my whole career. I’ve always proved them wrong. The stage is set for me to quiet all my (doubters)  and for them to bow down once again and eat crow.”

Fun guy.

But Tarver is right. His popularity quotient is somewhere north of the Big Bad Wolf and just south of Scrooge.

Maybe part of that reason is because Tarver’s song is a tired one. The whining gets a little old. But he is right about one thing. He‘s quieted more than a few of us at ringside, and I’ve tasted more than a little crow.

While Tarver always holds court at these things, grabs the moment and hates to give it back, Dawson has always seemed the quiet one, the guy who sits back and  lets the other guy rant.

“I ruin fighters,” Tarver said. “They’re never the same once they go 12 rounds with me. They’re damaged goods. There’s a disease going through the light-heavyweight division called the post-Tarver syndrome, and you’re going to get a taste of it Oct. 11, trust me.“

Apparently, Dawson had heard enough.

“You talk a lot of game, man, but that night, you can’t talk. You‘ve got to back that (stuff) up for real,” Dawson said. “You keep running your trap. The night of October 11? Just keep that in the back of your mind.”

One of the better lines of the conference call came when Dawson described Tarver as being “slow and old.“

“Age is nothing but a number,” said Tarver, whose number is closing in on 40. “I know some 26-year-old fighters who are already shot. In fact, I’m on the phone with one right now.”

A little humor is nice.

Have a nice day, guys.

donputo69 watching COPS:  don't count out the magic man just yet...he can still pull the trigger...overrated chad is young and quick...but after watching the fight with him vs johnson, I'll predict a UD decision for tarver...tarver still has atleast 2 more fights in him...holla back!!!

DaveB:  This is a hard one to pick really. Tarver really sucked against Hopkins. Dawson looked bad and schooled against Johnson. Is Tarver getting into Dawson's head? I'll pick Dawson based on his work rate. Will Tarver take him to school or will the younger man win because of youth?

Anony:  :::: I REALLY DON'T KNOW ON THIS ONE :::: It could go either way and that's what makes it exciting. I just hope the winner has the guts to fight Pacquiao who is coming up in pounds and needs a "warm up" fight before facing Valuev.... hehehehehe. Pacman can do it all, right??? Can't blame the man.. he is trying to milk the biggest cow in boxing. I know. The bad thing is that Pinoys really think Pacman has a chance...

ray :  I BELIEVE DAWSON IS THE REAL DEAL,IF HE IS,THEN HE SHOULD WIN.TOO MUCH YOUTH,POWER&COJONES.HE HAD A TOUGH TIME WITH JOHNSON,BUT WHO DOES NOT,HE WON THE FIGHT.THE TAVER OF LATELY WILL BE LUCKY TO GO THE DISTANCE WITH "BAD "CHAD

Guy:  Bad Chad looked young and inexperienced against Glen, but Glencoffe is a tough night for everyone, just ask Tarver. Chad still won the fight against Johnson and gained a lot of experience and showed his heart. Tarver stills talks like he is the savior of the light heavyweights, but his record says different. He went 1-1 with Eric Harding, 2-1 against an older Roy Jones,1-1 against Johnson, and throw in a loss to over 40 B-Hop and that hardly says HOF career. Bad Chad wins this one so we don't have to listen to Tarver spout his rhetoric any longer.

rudy:  Right on Guy, Glen Johnson is a tough out for anybody. Tarver went 1-1 against him and pretty much ran away from a third fight. Dawson, as much as he got hit by the Road Warrior, he outboxed and outlanded him. He boxed when he had to & exchanged when he needed to. Showed a lot of skill and heart in that fight. Bad Chad is going to school this fool, too fast & strong for Tarver -- KO in 8.

tdogg:  i agree wit guy tarver seems to forget he`s 1-1 with harding 1-1 with johnson 0-1 hopkins but acts like he`s the king he doesnt want to fight johnson again but i bet he`ll fight RJ again tarver is scared to to have a 3rd fight wit johnson he never mentions it & being the best he should wanna fight johnson again and harding and hopkins he`s a guy that only wants to fight people he thinks he can beat too many 1-1`s on his record a real champ would want to resolve that HOF PLEASE not just cuz u beat RJ besides that was a long time ago and u lost twice after that

swift:  This will be a lopsided 12 round win for chad dawson! Kind of like what he did to Eric Harding... I saw both of these fighters live in Hartford, CT last year and Tarver is trying to fool the public. He doesn't have anything left, that fight he had with Clinton Woods was more of Woods giving to much respect!

bill major:  I JUST DONT THINK TARVER HAS ENOUGH POP FOR THIS YOUNG LION.I THOUGHT JOHNSON WON THE FIGHT WITH DAWSON ACTUALLY BUT THIS IS A DIFFERANT BALLGAME WITH TARVER.I THINK DAWSON WILL PUSH HIM AFTER A FEW RDS IN THE TANK AND KEEP TARVER FROM TAKING HIS POT SHOTS WHICH REALLY HAVE LITTLE STING DAWSON IN A 12 RD DECISION

mortcola:  Here's one way to measure it: If Dawson's chin holds up, the fight is his. Tarver hasn't shown any sort of punch output in a long time. Dawson is fast, busy, accurate, and defensively sound. And while he showed a tinge of green against Johnson, he also shows a lot of heart and ability to fight effectively under heavy pressure. But the chin....so-so, based on his reaction to Adamek and Johnson. He was able to tough it out and stay smart against them, because he is a real fighter - but Tarver is, even at this geriatric age, a sharpshooter, and if Bad Chad is wobbly, Tarver owns him. Smart money is Dawson, close UD.But don't bet too much.

Radam G:  Dawson is going to win this bout. The only thing that Tarver has is a bragging mouth. He talk the talk, but can never walk the walk. Holla!

andy from newcastle:  Only one winner here, and it ain't Tarver. Actually two winners, cos boxing will be a little sweeter when BMT is retired. Toonoy

Real Talk:  Put me down for Tarver too DP 69. I think Tarver is going to hurt Chad with the Uppercut. I hope the judges get it right and know when that flashy punches are landing or not. Glenn Johnson spanked that a$$ too.

andy from newcastle:  And just for the record, I prefer Scrooge. Toonoy

Yuvie:  I'm lovin this fight, can't wait. I really see it being a 50/50 fight. I'm not sure who wins this but I'm hoping Dawson gets the win. He seems like the likely candidate for next great light heavyweight. It depends on how you look at it. Most thought Tarver would struggle with Woods & Dawson would probably dominate Johnson but it was the other way around, which makes the fight so much more interesting.

959 Santa:  I will go for the percentages and say the younger man Dawson wins by decision.
Friday Oct 3, 2008 06:51:30 AM
swift:  I'm telling you guys, Tarver is looking for one more big payday. The only reason he's taking this fight right now is because he thinks he saw holes in Dawson in the Johnson fight. Remember that Dawson was chasing for a fight with Tarver for 2-3 years and all of a sudden he wants fight now! I wonder why?? I say Dawson wears him out over 12 rounds!!

2009 Reader Of The Year Weighs In On Legacies Of Pacquiao And Mayweather
"Pacquiao has proven....in the ring... time and time again that he is the greatest of this time. He has earned his respect. He begs for nothing. He is a man content with his growth, his family and his achievements. A man the world has now turned it's eyes to behold. Floyd Mayweather is not even close in stature. He may possess the greatest skills but he is not the Face of Boxing today. Google Manny Pacquiao. There are 20 million searches. Google Floyd. There are 6.5 million. Look at the NYTimes, the Wall Street Journal and Time. Count how many words were used these past years to mention Floyd Mayweather. Then count the words still being printed about Manny. And keep counting. As I've said many times, Floyd has been too clever by half. He has short changed his public.....and has out-smarted himself. Manny will fight but a few more times. Enjoy it while you can. He is an all time great pugilist. Floyd, with all of his remarkable skills lack the will to be truly great in the biggest sense of the word. His legacy will look more like Holmes that Ali. He has earned it." ---November is half-way gone, but we don't need to keep counting ballots. It's a landslide. Fe'Roz has won the 2009 Reader of the Year award. His comments add to the website immeasurably, and he epitomizes the thoughtful, respectful, educated fan of pugilism we strive to cater to at TSS. Congrats, Fe'Roz, and please accept my thanks for being the valued member of this community that you are. Sincerely, Editor Mike
