Joan Guzman Apologizes
Joan Guzman screwed up royally when he came into his Saturday bout with Nate Campbell overweight, didn't shave off the 3 1/2 pounds he was over, and then refused to fight Campbell over the weight, even though Campbell agreed to glove up anyway.
Well, Guzman has seen the error of his ways, and he's put out a release spelling out his regrets. Here it is:
I was wrong and I apologize. There is no one else to blame for me not making the lightweight division weight limit of 135 pounds for my WBO, WBA and IBF title bout against Nate Campbell this past weekend.
No trainer is to blame. No nutritionist is to blame. No manager is to blame. No promoter is to blame. Put the blame on me, Joan Guzman, because I was completely at fault.
My conduct in this important matter was unprofessional.
I rolled the dice by coming in too heavy at the start of my training camp. I was able to get away with this many times before but, at age 32, my body shut down on me with 3.5 pounds to go. My metabolism rejected taking off so many pounds in a short period.
I apologize, first and foremost, to Campbell. I hope he accepts my sincere apology.
I apologize to all the boxing fans, his, mine and fans who just wanted to see two accomplished fighters compete.
I apologize to everyone in my native country, the Dominican Republic, and I am sorry I let you all down after you have given me years of great support.
I apologize to the Showtime network and hope I can earn their forgiveness over time.
I apologize to the Beau Rivage Resort & Casino and to all the great people of the Biloxi area.
I apologize to Campbell's entire team from co-promoters Don King and Terry Trekas on down.
I certainly apologize to my team starting with Sycuan Ringside Promotions, the entire Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation and to my manager, Jose Nunez.
I apologize to other members of my own team all of whom worked so hard.
I apologize to the WBO, to the WBA, to the IBF and to the Mississippi athletic commission.
I learned a lesson, a hard lesson, and I just hope that, in time, I can regain the trust and the confidence of all concerned.
Humbly Submitted,
JOAN GUZMAN

I am willing to forgive him as a fan as long as it never happens again but whats more important is whether promoters will forgive him or not, will thy take the chance of putting him in a title fight, time will tell. At least the apology seemed sincere.

he aint undeafeated no more....he's 28-1...(1 KO by Big Mac) lose....this fool is overrated...made people who bought tickets to see a fight waste money...joan guzman is what is BAD for Boxing....how would you feel if you spend hundreds of dollars to watch a show that doesnt even happen?...i would of been real pissed off....but hey, thats boxing....guzman definitely ran from a true champion in campbell....guzman hasnt KO'd anyone since he was at 122lbs...his power is so overrated...his skills are not all that neither...he's just another GOOD BOXER...a B- fighter...trust me, i will never, EVER, watch any of his fights again...unless is against pacquiao or a top 135-140 pounder....i rest my case....holla back!!!!

Apology accepted by fans, but with promoters, cable networks resort's forgiveness will be very hard to accept, he has to apologize to them with money to pay for the losses incurred. He screwed up big time, when his job was one of only 2 jobs a fighter does, make weight, then fight. I don't think he get a title shot in the next 2 years after this. He may if he can fight 2 consecutive fights making weight and giving a good performance as well it should be supported by fans by watching th fight.

I take it back. There doesn't look enough spare fat on Guzman to fry an egg. He just belongs with the junior welters. Toonoy

I don't think it had to do with the weight at all, especially considering that Campbell was willing to go ahead with the bout. My sense is that Joan was probably not ready. Bottom line is he caused a lot a people to lose a lot of money and credibility. It's going to be a long road back to the good graces of any promoter after a stunt like this. Or, he's going to have to submit to lesser paydays in smaller venues to prove he's serious.

make the weight.thats your job.he just hurt his bottom line with that stunt.where was mayweather for this?he should made him weigh in every few days at least.i wonder if the strength trainer gave him too many supliments.cambell should fight him right away for a 80-20 split at least. campell will knock him out.

If you're judging that on the above picture andy, I think it's from a previous fight mate.

When ESPN interviewed and questioned him that night, his face was more of 'I'm not fighting" than "I wish I could fight".... I haven't seen any Guzman fight to tell you the truth but that night he didn't look ready for action. His face looked scare, that's what I mean. Apologizing? Oh well, whatever. Still very unprofessional. There should be a rule to make him fight the next week after not making the weight and splitting profits in favor of the boxer that did make the weight just like Erudite said. With a rule like that, there will be no boxer who miss weight. I assure you that.

Joan should apologize to himself while he's at it, because more than likely just ruined his career. Cue the Rubben Studdard song - 'I'm Sorry'

Joan Guzman shouldn't expect to be forgiven, I think the commissins have learned there lesson after the WBC forgave Jose Luis Castillo for the first time he didnt make weight against Diego Corrales (RIP) because he did it a second time in there third fight. I don't understand how a fighter coming up from 130 to 135 cannot make the 135 limit. I think his career is over, not only does he not provide an exciting fight style but now he isn't making weight either.

Apologize to Pedro Fernandez dude, he moved heaven and hell to convince anyone and everyone willing to pretend to listen that you are the most avoided one because you are slick and all that.
I do not think this is what he had in mind when he was selling your talents. Anyway, send flowers and note to the man because I am worried that he is not going out these days because it is so humiliating to be dangled in a way you dangled his faith. Cheers dude! Oh I forgot, you should not drink cervisa it's what makes you overweight.

I think the white guy with the tattoos on the left of the picture was the giveaway on that one Fistic, but I never miss a chance to crack a joke (or an egg). Toonoy, not as green as he's cabbage looking.

Nah, I've stuck with Guzman as a fan for some time, even after all the lack of activity. He gets a chance at Campbell and that happens, it's a massive let-down. I was as eager for this fight as any other this year. Dude needs to earn his respect back.

Guzrun should be suspended from boxing in all sanctioning bodies for a year. His ranking should be dropped from the top 5 if he's in the top 5. Apology is an apology but doesnt mean he gets off any penalties he'll have to face. Nate THE CHAMP made the ultimate sacrifice to honor this sport and the sanctioning bodies and the fans. I say pay Nate his due and take out the frustration on the next opponent. Nate, if you are reading this, YOU ARE THE REAL CHAMP!! Not JMM and not Pacquiao. You have all my respect bro.

:::: I RESPECT ALL OF THEM - Pacquiao, JMM and Nate. That's where the action is right now. I'll pay for any of those fights. Pacquiao should skip DLH fight and face his piers. Oh sorry, I forgot it is Pacquiao's payday and he wants to cash in as any other fighter in the world would like. It is not bad to receive $15,000,000 for putting your face to the test... and to all of you calling other fighters "canvas kissers"... well... get use to the image of Pacquiao kissing the canvas as well cause it might happen... DLH is not planning to go out of business without putting up a show. Sincerely, I'm worried about Pacquiao... but again, for that kind of money some people will let a truck hit them. So I don't blame him.

"It Takes A Special Man"
"It takes a special man to lace them on and step into a ring to either hurt or be hurt. It's always been my opinion that the greatest fighters (not necessarily the most commercially successful) are probably born with that never give up until I'm completely done attitude. It can be nurtured over time, but you either have it or you don't. When adversity hits, and it will, this instinct will allow you to reach inside for additional strength and determination. Ali, Louis, Gatti, Corrales had it....Marquez and Pacquiao have it. De La Hoya, for all the great things he did as a boxer never had it, Tyson didn't have It, Cotto doesn't have it, and as much as I hate to admit it because I loved to watch him fight, Chavez didn't have it. 99.9% of us don't have it either. That's why we're not all fighters and we can sit here and judge these courageous men from the comfort of our computers."
