Roach is confident that his man's speed will overwhelm the 36-year-old Golden Boy.

Roach To Oscar: Go Over 147, It'll Cost Ya

By Ron Borges

“So do I answer you; The pound of flesh, which I demand of him, is dearly bought; ‘tis mine and I will have it.’’- Shylock, “The Merchant of Venice,’’ Act. IV, scene I

William Shakespere was never a boxing writer and Freddie Roach probably hasn’t spent a lot of time poring over the pages of his plays and sonnets but buried deep in The Merchant of Venice lies a cautionary warning for Oscar De La Hoya.

The word on the street is that for every pound, or portion of a pound, that De La Hoya weighs over the 147-pound limit he agreed to meet Manny Pacquiao at on Dec. 6 he will be assessed a $1 million penalty. That money, it is said, will go to Pacquiao, which would make it little more than a bribe to ignore common sense and good conscience.

That may be the plan, or at least the fallback position for the six-time world champion, but if De La Hoya thinks it’s a way to buy the opportunity to fight Pacquiao at 150 pounds on Dec. 6, he’s in for a big surprise.

“If he’s too far over I’ll make him make 147,’’ Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach, warned Tuesday during a break at his Wild Card Gym in Hollywood. “I’ll make him make the weight.

“I know I’d be under tremendous pressure (to agree to the overage) and I know my guy will say, ‘Screw the weight. Let’s fight,’ but my job is to protect the fighter. If De La Hoya comes in at 150, I’ll say ‘No fight!’

“I wouldn’t put it past him to try something like buying his way to 150 but three pounds over is a huge difference. When he fought (Steve) Forbes he was supposed to make 150 and he came in at 151 and they gave it to him. I’m not doing that. A contract is a contract. The contract weight is 147. Make it. I want him to work as much as possible.’’

In the end, Roach believes, weight is not the real issue for either man but there are limits. A case in point is former junior super bantamweight and super featherweight champion Joan Guzman, who will challenge lightweight champion Nate Campbell on Sept. 13 in Biloxi. Guzman was once known as “Little Tyson’’ after he knocked out 17 of his first 21 opponents but since moving up to fight at featherweight and beyond he has not stopped a single opponent. Thought still undefeated, Guzman’s last knockout came more than four years ago and the reason is, Roach well understands, that there is a point after which power simply stops following a fighter as he moves up in weight.

“The weight limit is 147,’’ Roach re-iterated. “My plan is for Manny to come in at 142 and by fight time be up to 147. He was 147 in his last fight (when he defeated WBC lightweight champion David Diaz in his first fight at that high a weight). He struggled to make 135. In fact, he had to lose a pound the day of the weigh in and he told me that day he wanted to go up in weight again so we don’t have a problem moving up.

“The fact of the matter is winning this fight is not about size. It’s about speed. That’s what wins it. I don’t think we can knock out Oscar with one punch. He’s the bigger guy. He’s used to being hit by bigger punches. But Manny can break him down by making him work three minutes of every round. If we do that, I don’t think he can stay with us.’’

Roach believes if De La Hoya is forced to make 147 rather than be allowed to come in several pounds over that limit, the toll on his nearly 36-year-old body will be substantial. Add to that a high work rate forced upon him by Pacquiao’s speed, movement and relentlessness and exhaustion could set in sooner than the bigger man might expect. It is then that opportunity will knock for Manny Pacquiao, especially if he hasn’t allowed himself to be bought off in exchange for a three-pound cushion.

“He fades in easy fights,’’ Roach said of De La Hoya, who he prepared for his showdown with Floyd Mayweather, Jr., a fight  that ended with De La Hoya abandoning a jab that had been highly effective in the early rounds and being outhustled down the stretch of a split decision defeat. “That’s why I want to keep Oscar looking for us all night. There was a reason why Oscar stopped jabbing against Floyd. I’m not going to talk about it but I know what it was. I pretty much know what Oscar has left.’’

What Roach believes he has left, at least if forced to fight at 147 for 12 rounds, is not enough stamina or strength to outwork or out speed Pacquiao. What he also believes is if De La Hoya is forced to come in at the welterweight limit he agreed to fight at, he will be even more vulnerable than he appeared to be in May against Forbes in a fight in which he won every round but from which his face came out bruised and swollen despite his opponent’s well-deserved reputation for floating like a butterfly and stinging like one, too.

“Oscar is an older fighter,’’ Roach said. “His face is breaking up that much easier. Older fighters don’t take that damage like they used to. Oscar only fights once a year now (twice this year). If you’re not used to fighting your skin gets soft. Fighters who are active aren’t as soft. You add inactivity to age and to having to make a weight he hasn’t made in seven years (seven years, eight months and 12 days to be exact) and you give us an advantage.

“I’m preparing Manny to win. I intend on giving him every advantage. That includes the weight. I look at the tapes every night, especially of Oscar’s fights with (Hector) Camacho and (Pernell) Whitaker. Oscar has always had problems with shorter guys and with southpaws and in Manny he’s got both.

“They say he doesn’t fight southpaws well but we’ll see about that. I know we’ll need a perfect game plan and we’ll have to fight a perfect fight to win so I’m not concerned about what Oscar is doing as long as he makes 147. I’m concentrating on what Manny has to do. I pretty much know what Oscar has. I’m concentrating on getting my guy ready.’’

Ready to fight at 147 pounds, give or take not one ounce. That’s the same weight it might be wise for Oscar De La Hoya to focus on making because if he doesn’t it may literally cost him a pound of flesh instead of a fist full of dollars to ever get into the ring with Manny Pacquiao.

Coco:  it seems that Roach wants this fight more than Pacman. I still disagree with this fight because DLH should've chosen Margarito, but now that it is a done deal, I would like for DLH to humiliate Pacquiao just to silence Roach. With every comment that he makes, he makes it seem like he dislikes DLH. One thing is for sure, if Oscar comes to fight with that ugly defense that only Mayweather Jr. knows how to operate, he will get hit a lot.
Tuesday Sep 2, 2008
cescor:  I agree with roach for manny not to give in to Dela Hoya an advantage in weight. Dela Hoya has all the advantage in all compartment the difference is only in age. One thing for sure will happen with Dela Hoya on fight night is he will not last for 12 rounds with paquiao he'll lost wind and get knock out that will surely come out as a result of shedding more pounds
Tuesday Sep 2, 2008
FightFanWest:  Yeah, it seems as though Roach wanted the fight more then Manny. If you remember when Manny turned the fight down. Greedy Freddie came in and intervened. He said he's going to talk Manny into taking the fight. Greedy Freddie only wants this fight for the money as well. He would throw Manny under the boat for the 2-3 million that Freddie is going to get. Remember this is the same Freddie Roach that leftManny, Israel Vasquez, Juan Lazcano, Vanes Martirosyan and others to train Oscar for the money. Greedy Freddie is not loyal to no fighter. He's just like some fighters. He will sell his soul to the devil for money
Tuesday Sep 2, 2008
noning:  I prefer to believe on Freddie Roach than anybody else who are pretending to know about boxing... boxing analysts, columnists, and fans... that includes me. Roach knows best whats good for his ward than anybody else.. he is a hall of famer .. The reason why a believe Manny can beat ODLH... In fact i have known several boxing analysts here in the Philippines, who are making predictions in several occasions but unfortunately all their predictions ended up in a trash... no offend Ronnie Nathanielz, RT, Governor MP, Dianne. Hehehehe!!!
Tuesday Sep 2, 2008
eroica:  Cescor writes: "...Dela Hoya... he will not last for 12 rounds with pacquiao he'll lost wind and get knock out that will surely come out as a result of shedding more pounds ." Amen to that.

rocky:  i lost a lot of respect to oscar dela hoya for picking pacquiao as his "galant retirement fight" no disrespect to manny pacquiao, he is my number 1 pound for pound boxer right now, but oscar is just way too big for him. there's nothing wrong with that. oscar should have chosen either margarito, williams or a descent "TRUE" welterweight as his opponent. he really showed that on his last fight, money comes first, and his legacy is at a very distant second. what a shame...
Tuesday Sep 2, 2008
archie:  Hey oscar ! find someone your size! this fight is a big bust
Tuesday Sep 2, 2008
toots:  Go Manny!
Tuesday Sep 2, 2008
nblvblewriter:  If against Pacman, DLH may have a hard time. Is it more difficult if DLH fights those whom most critics want him to fight like Margarito. So, who is the good match maker? Anyway, the Phenomenal Pacman seems to have advantage. Wax in. Wax out!!!
Tuesday Sep 2, 2008
Sodamn Insane:  Coach Roach has a valid point . If ODLH does fight at 147 he will be so weak and tired and if over 147lbs have to pay 1 million per lbs he is over . this is a win /win situation for Pacman. plus I rather watch Pacman vs ODLH than the borring Mayweather vs ODLH.
Tuesday Sep 2, 2008
coconut:  Well i put my trust on roach he knows best... than anybody else... this fight is exiting and would be a landmark in boxing history.. For Manny... his the only asian fighter could achieve a such glory.. that is why there are reasons why Filipinos should be proud of. specially on December 06, when the national anthem will be sang!!! " Alab ng puso duyan kanang magiting, sa manlulupig di ka pag sisiil" Viva!! la Nacion de rapido!!!
Tuesday Sep 2, 2008
BUBOY:  YAHH..I DONT CARE ABOUT FREDDIE ROACH,AS MUCH AS PACQUIAO WINS ITS ALL THAT..FREDDIE ROACH WANTS A REVENGE TO DELA HOYA BECAUSE DELA HOYA KICKED HIM AS A COACH...SO THAT HE WANTS A REVENGE. AND HE KNOW HOW TO MAKE A REVENGE BY USING HIS FAVORITE BOXER THE PACMAN...BUT I BELIEVE TO FREDDIE ROACH THAT PACQUIAO CAN BEAT DELA HOYA..I KNOW THAT HE WILL DO ANYTHING TO MAKE DELA HOYA SUFFERED . -TO FREDDIE ROACH GIVE EVERYTHING WHAT YOUVE GOT OR I WILL KICK YOUR ASSSSSS!
Tuesday Sep 2, 2008
bulljack:  In Fairness to Freddie, he brings Pacquiao to stardom. I think he knows best for Pacquiao though he knows better than best for his pocket. That's business anyway. Let's just watch what will happen for both fighters. It's just one of a kind anyway. A pound for pound king versus a pay per view king. So, two Kings will fight to protect their names. To much to argue. Lets wait, watch and enjoy guys.
Tuesday Sep 2, 2008
Oakwood:  Roach was right in saying that no fight should be made if DLH weighs in at 150 lbs. While DLH is in the twilight of his golden career the fact remains that he is still one of the best boxers today. His performance against Steve Forbes maybe viewed as anemic but the tremendous challenge he would be up to against Pacman might motivate him to give his best before hanging his gloves. He is still dangerous come December 6.
Tuesday Sep 2, 2008
Flodgere:  It takes a lot of courage and a special kind of a fighter to take on this kind of challenge. Oscar, a great fighter, naturally bigger, no matter how past-his-prime or how old he is right now, still has enough power to really hurt such a small opponent in Manny Pacquiao. However, this Pacman has been climbing up in weight classes with much “ease” than most of the other great fighters that I know. And everytime he moves up in weight, he not only defeats the bigger/heavier guys, but beats em down in a dominant fashion. When he lost his Flyweight title because of weight drain, he instantly jumped up three weight classes and blow away with “ease” the IBF Junior Featherweight champion (Ledwaba). Next, we all know what happened to the Mexican great Marco Antonio Barrera when they fought at Featherweight. The only exception so far is when he fought the other Mexican great Erik Morales for the first time at Super Featherweight where he lost a close decision but instantly avenged it with two spectacular knockouts on rematches. And lastly, we saw what he did to David Diaz last June at Lightweight. So this special fighter they call “Pacman” hasn’t really tasted a real challenge when moving up in weight. And now that he decided to “play with the Big Boys”, we still have to wait and see what happens… Any speculations regarding this fight could only be answered on the night of Dec. 6.

bjader:  Coco/fight fan west I didn't see that way as you said. Remember that Professors,Teachers before going to school the next day need to prepare his lesson plan.Coach like Roach has no exception,he need to prepare his game plan for Pacquiao. ODLH of 1998 is not a version of ODLH of 2008. Ten years older will not be the same in term of speed, reflexes, endurance and stamina. On the hand Pacquiao at age 29 is still growing and slight difference in weight of ODLH i believe will not be a big factor..Pacquiao speed, quickness, endurance and stamina will take care of everything whatever ODLH to offer on Dec.6
Tuesday Sep 2, 2008
nandi:  Dear Ron, Nice article. If there is an upper limit on the weight at weigh-in, meaning Coach Freddie's condition not to fight beyond 150lbs is in the contract, then there should be no problem. Can you ask Coach Freddie Roach why PacMan needs to weigh 142lbs at weigh-in then bulk up to 147 come fight night? Is there an explanation (scientific or otherwise) why PacMan can't train, weigh, and fight at 147 all the while? (No need to consciously starve to reduce weight for the weigh-in.) Come fight night, PacMan can still fight OLDH at 147 to 150 lbs! Just a thought. Regards.

jeffrey:  i disagree with your thought fightfanwest. roach wanted to protect pacman so he wanted to make sure that he will no in any harm becoz he knows ODLH and pacman so he knows how to handle both guys also. he might be saying unfriendly to ODLH but maybe it's for promotionl porpuses. who knows?

eddieboy:  I, agree with you Fred!! Go ahead make a history that everybody won't forget for the rest of their lives, generation to generation!!! Goodluck
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
KAKTUS:  Being a father is wanting all the best there is could offer to his child... the same way as Freddie (Manny's boxing dad) doing to his ward to be recognized as the best fighter in the planet... Go Freddie there's alot of fight to conquer and a lot of recognition for the both of you with the Pacman!!!

DSource:  Freddie ain't greedy, he is simply confident in his fighter. I too am confident Pacquiao can beat Oscar. Will it be easy? Hell no! Nobody said it was going to be. But it is winnable. All you haters that say Pacquiao has no shot, obviously do not know or haven't followed Pacquiao long enough. Why can't you knuckleheads accept some sense and listen to the fine points Freddie made rather than bash the guy. Jus tbecause all these so-called "boxing expert/ writers" say this is a mismatch, all of you want to follow suit like mice following the Pied Piper. Pacquiao is a phenom. He is a freak of nature! An old, dehydrated Oscar is vulnerable to a quick tazmanian devil like Pacquiao. Like I said, it won't be easy, but for $20 million dollars, it's worth trying!
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
nejidark:  hey "FightFanWest" your saying that roach is greedy? he said in an interview that if pacquiao loose to delahoya he will not get hi share, remember that. your saying this things because your dont see what freddie does. the way you think is like of a first grader
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008

larcal75:  Freddie Roach is greedy? get your facts straight guys! Freddie is loyal to Pacquiao and Pacquiao is loyal to Roach. I've never seen both of them abandoning each other. And when Roach went to train Oscar, Pacquiao was only fighting a less dangerous Solis which Roach came on fight time to be in Pacquiao's side. Roach is telling what the truth is that Oscar is all done. And if people think it's a mismatch, that Oscar is to big for Pacquiao, well god damn Pernell Whitaker and Hector Camacho are same height as Pacquiao but those guys have less speed, stamina, and power than Pacquiao. And people think that Pacquiao started as a Flyweight, well heck, he was just 15 years old. His body evolved through the years, and if you see his fight at 135lbs, his body is perfect. And when Roach said that he was still having problem making weight at 135lbs, the logical choice is to move to another weight at 140lbs for Ricky Hatton but he was not available so opportunity present itself and that's why he is fighting Oscar. When I see and watch Pacquiao through the years is that I always see on him the late Great Roberto Duran who came from Lightweight and went all the way to Super Middleweight. Pacquiao will eat Oscar like a buffet with a lot of leathers and at the end, Pacquiao will give Oscar his worst defeat.

maGGot_SOUP:  The Doc Roach is in for the Diagnose The student Pacman will do the job right
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
Kid Lorenzo:  Whatever Roach says, it is just to hype the fight. That's part of the boxing business to optimize profit. Many boxing fans are easily swayed by intentional pronouncements or antics of trainers, boxers, managers etc. After each boxing match, it is them who laugh their way to the bank.

Cloudstripe:  FightFan, you talk like you know everything. DLH choose Freddie not Freddie choose DLH to trained. Coz of the greedynees of Floyd Mayweather Sr. I hope you are reading those article before. Second, Freddie already telling people that if Manny loses he doesn't want part of Manny's purse. A lot of hater on this fight and I notice that all of them is narrow minded people.
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
Brian:  In my own opinion Freddie is right, DLH has no more power left on him and one of the factor for the is he's having probs in fighting shorter guys and doing southpaw and besides he's already old to pull the trigger! Go Manny!!! Knock DLH out just like your previous fights!

mike:  How can Roach be greedy, when he has enough, lives in his gym, has Parkinsons, no family to support and eats only boxing for breakfast, lunch and dinner. No, from what I gather, Freddie cannot be that. He is treating Manny like a son. He is concerned that Manny will miss this fight which will redound well, for Manny's future. And, he's right. Manny himself might already have been anxious himself before the announcement. And didn't Roach say that he need not be paid if Pacquiao loses? In any event, I don't think Manny will allow the non-payment bull. Roach never left Manny. Manny acquiesced to the Puerto Rico stint of Roach to train de la Hoya. He even took leave to be with Manny in his fight with Solis. I don't know Roach, but fair is fair.

John Patrick Ibanez:  I am filipino and proud of what Manny had gone through, but fighting ODLH seems to be a mismatch. Freddie Roach is adored by most filipinos of how he handles Manny but with this fight and his insistence that Manny can beat ODLH seems a monumental task, coupled up with greed of money, this maybe the end of their tandem of both best pound for pound fighter and renowned trainor.
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
Bruce:  Freddie Roach is a two time trainer of the year, a future hall of famer. I agree with him 100%. Roach is smart, that's the way a good trainer should be. De la Hoya have a reach and height advantage but at the end stamina will prevail.
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
Onal:  Hi Mike, great thing about boxing, anything can happen. it was a dream before DLH vs. PACMAN... now it's reality, wake up boxing fans... No matter who's the winner, it will be a blow out in boxing history, so hold your seats...

818 kid:  unless roach wants to build a chain of wildcard gyms, then he's definitely in it for the money, which i doubt. if he's guilty, its cause he probly wants a legacy as the best trainer of all time and believes manny will take him to that level. that guy has no life outside of boxing, whats he gonna do with that big payday? make it rain in the club, pay for all his baby momma's expenses or buy rims for his bentley. so, i highly doubt money as his motive.
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
karateka:  I'm a Filipino. I also prefer to see DLH fight Margarito. Some say that this Pacman-DHL fight is a farce. I prefer to give them--Freddie and co.--the benefit of the doubt. FR's detractors may be right, but you see, in this part of the globe, RP, FR is honored. Movies were not made for criticts, so some people say. And so, this Pacman-DLH fight, since I can't prevent it, I may just enjoy it . . . have nothing to loose, anyway. Good day, folks!

examinerauthor:  With his fatherly concern and treatment of his boxers, it is no wonder why the Pacman, all these years, has maintained his high regard for Freddie Roach. Freddie deserves his fees, whether Manny wins or loses the fight. Freddie also deserves the admiration and respect of all Pinoys around the world for turning Manny into what he has become today. GOD BLESS YOU FREDDIE. A close friend of mine visited the WCG recently and he was really amazed at the amiableness of Freddie.

Barrera:  Hey FightFanWest and javier.. How can Coach Freddie Roach be greedy on Money? I trully agree mike that Freddie has enough money for himself to sustain, he also dont have a family to support. Dont be so judgemental towards other people, if we are a true sportminded fans in boxing. I agree to the statements of Coach freddie that he know personally the great oscar dela hoya because he train him and manny has the advantage in speed. In logical standpoint, both fighters has the advantages and disadvantages that would be an exciting fight and considered as one of the classic fights and can generate millions in PPV. I believe that oscar is a legend in boxing "the Pay per view king" and manny pacquiao is the greatest fighter coming out in asian soil and considered also as alegend... The Pound for Pound King. Let us enjoy this great event.

percy:  If there is a trainer who knows Manny well, who else can he be but Roach. He has molded Manny to be what he is and I like what he has done for my countryman Manny. For whatever reason, I have my faith in Roach and Manny beating the crap out of DLH. Roach has protected Manny and his interest. He has advised Manny to retire by 30 and Manny knows it well to take this fight with DLH. The future is at stake and so Manny et al stands to benefit from this. If there is one greedy guy here, it's DLH. At 35, he should've retired. If he is really the fighter I thought he was then he should have taken Margarito instead. It could be for personal, financial, legacy or the combination of the said factors. The 65-35 cut is measly, given the possible earnings. After all this might just be a money-fight, nothing really personal but just one hell of ride were getting.
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
DoubleTrouble:  All I know why Roach is bitter is because he was only paid $500K for training ODLH. Whereas, Oscar made over $30M. Now if Manny wins this fight he is getting his usual 10%. Do your math!

PrimaVera:  Manny became The PacMan because of his GOD-given talent and a good coach named Freddie Roach. This partnership will go down in the boxing history as one of the greatest partnership of all time. The same as the Ali-Dundee, Frazier-Futch, Hearns-Stewart, etc...partnerships. Roach knows exactly what he is talking about having trained ODLH before. This is the fight that will cements PacMan's statue as one of the greatest boxer of all time along side Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Robinson and Roberto Duran....PacMan wins against ODLH via a decision or a late-round TKO.....

kit:  just look at the brighter side guys...there is this boxing that awaits us come dec. 6. i just hope it would be an exciting one not a circus.
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
Quillon:  well... let's just wait for the fight guys...
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
Pedroza:  On the HBO countdown to Pac/MAB II, didn't Roach say that he thought that Pac had skipped out on training camp to go back to the Philippines because he was upset with Roach for having left him during the Solis camp to train DLH?
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
junsolucio:  COM'ON! ALL OF US NEEDS MONEY.THEY ARE PARTNERS SO ROACH GOTTA HAVE HIS SHARE WITH MANNY. BUT IT'S MORE ON THAT THAT MADE THEM CLOSE,IT IS THEIR FREINDSHIP,YOU CANNOT BUY A TRUE AND TRUSTED FREIND.
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
isidro:  Freddie, after the Diaz fight was also surprised how Manny well executed their fight plan.I think Manny deserve some credits in all of this talk about advantages and not.The picture slowly coming out clear now is the proper determination and preparation of both Freddie and Manny as such the fans in general would like to see this fight to happen on December 6.There are two side of the hypes per se to push or to pull. The push made it ..i'll be watching it now come DEC.
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
Gil P. Acosta:  I STILL THINK THIS IS A MISMATCH: AT 147 LBS., NO WAY AN AGING DELAHOYA WILL BEAT A PRIME PACQUIAO. AT WEIGHTS 150 AND HIGHER, DELAHOYA HAS MORE THAN EVEN CHANCE OF KNOCKING PACQUIAO.
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
Alex Alano:  The fight between ODL and Pacman can be considered as one of the greatest fight of the century, Support it, its good for boxing.
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
iriga city boy:  De la Hoya's ring exploits is about to close when he rumbles with Pacquiao on Dec 6.DLH is aging. He is not his former self anymore. He fades in the last rounds.Pacquiao will train as if there is no tomorrow just to get victory. He will have the fresh legs, fast reflexes and i don't think the old man DLH can catch up with him.If Forbes can deform DLH's face,Manny will probably smash it.DLH will protect that "Hollywood face".But Pacquiao will woodpeck on it .As Oscar keeps protecting his face,he gets open on the breadbasket and Pacquiao will get his haymakers on Oscar's liver and kidneys.Fellow posters, there is no mismatch on this fight.Pacquiao will win this.A lot of people will be wrong that Pacquiao doesn't have a chance at all.You guys just don't know the grit of this Filipino boxer.History will be written on Dec 6,2008
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
Robust_Punch:  I believe Roach is true to his word that he really believed Pacman can pull out a win over the bigger DLH. Roach does'nt needs money, hes got lots. He want this fight more than Manny because he don't want Manny to lose the one of a life time opportunity to fight a legend and of course huge pay. Let's just enjoy the hyping and support the fight. Cheers!!!
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
bjader:  Roach, is Pacquiao coach like a teacher preparing his lesson plan before going to school next day. Roach is just serious about this fight because his favorite pupil is the online and want to anticipate everything with his necessary game plan. Weight advantage of ODLH for me will not be a big factor, it's just a slight weight advantage. ODLH is in the twilight zone of his boxing career and he not anymore a version of 1998 ODLH. His speed, quickness, stamina and endurance will not be the same during his prime. Pacquiao is younger and in his prime. His speed, quicknees, stamina and endurance will do the talking on Dec. 6
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
alexformento:  Hi boxing fans! Guys I admire Freddie how he cares for his priced-boxer. Understand that Pacquiao will square off with the still dangerous and admired boxer in the world today. The respected coach just want to see to it that the advantages of DHL over the PACMAN will not be further strengthened by not strictly observing the weight limit they agreed upon. Try to regain your senses men, and accept the reality that of the possible opponents readyt to face DHL, he choosed PACMAN to be his opponent come Dec 6 because he has all the advantages over the fighter from the Philippines. Can you blame Freddie if he sees to it the contract signed for the fight be observed to the letter. Please understand that everybody wants to observed strictly the stipulations in the contract.

daniel del frio- fil-mex:  THIS FIGHT PROVES THE BRAVERY OF 2 NATIONS - FILIPINAS AND MEXICO WHO HAS LONG TRADITIONS OF HAVING GOOD BOXERS. ITS A CELEBRATION OF SPORTS MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE. NO MATTER WHO WINS - I THINK WE WILL ALL HAVE A GREAT TIME WATCHING THESE 2 WARRIORS. VIVA FILIPINAS AND MEXICO !!!!!!!!!
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
revlis:  dlh sure have all the size advntage...im a pacman fan but i see ds fight to be the toughest 1 for pac... if only pac has defense like mayweather...then there is no doubt that he can win...the problem is pac can be hit... yes he can withstand power punches of his previous opponents but this guy next is too big for him... see the first 3 rounds and then predict the outcome... but ofcourse i would love pac to beat him...hel be recognized as the best boxer ever....
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
Dave:  I think Freddie talk some sense. His name and reputation as a top notch trainer is also at stake. Ofcourse you can't exclude the money factor, but if the possibility to win is nil then he would not go for it definitely. Manny is a special fighter no doubt and special fighters in the past were able to beat much bigger opponents; and with the guidance of a hall of fame trainer then it could be done again. Let us not forget history guys!!!
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
John Jones:  This is all a set up. Roach knows very well that Oscar has a hard time beating smaller, much less southpaw guys. Add to that speed and power and you got Pacquiao. This "we have a size disadvantage" thing is bull. Roach is setting De La Hoya up by disguising his "advantages".
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
Anony:  ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: THIS IS AN EXHIBITION FIGHT ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
Anonymous user:  I think Pacquiao don't stand a chance against my man DLH. Oscar will win this fight as he is naturally bigger and more powerful than Manny. Besides, Oscar is the cutest one and the judges should take that into consideration. I love you Oscar!!!!!!
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
stan_man:  a lot of people are criticizing this fight. they say it is a mismatch, oscar is too big.....many more. to those critics. if you dont like the match, then shut-up and dont watch the fight. if im still alive december 6, i'll watch it for sure.
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
Robert Curtis:  Freddie knows his fighters. He lives in his gym. If you'd met the guy, you'd know he's friendly and approachable. This is not a bad fight and Freddie is not a bad guy. Freddie believes in Manny and is looking out for him from every angle. This fight may be risky. But it's risky for both Manny and Oscar. Pacman can either blossom or get beat down by a bigger man. Oscar may get a KO early or he could get slapped silly and pink while suffering an embarrassing UD loss.
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
many FUCqUiao:  i love boxing, but i am no expert. a lot of journalists and sportswriters there are good sportsmen, but are not really trainors and boxers themselves, so i don't really believe what they have to say. plain observation alone cannot teach you that much...experience does give you a whole world of knowledge. freddie roach is AN EXPERIENCED ONE!!! both a trainer and former boxer, he doesn't make theories, he produces results...look at how far the PACMAN has come! he is a superstar now! thanks to his extraordinary skills and his extraordinaire trainor! i am betting $1,000- for PacMan to win.
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
rudy:  The Joke Roach Coach is a moron. Just trying to get his $$$....but it could cost big time if Pac catches a beatdown from DLH
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
Dr. Votts:  LONG LIVE THE P4P KING!!!!! IF OSCAR DOESN'T CATCH HIM EARLY HE'S GONNA HAVE A LONG NIGHT!!!!! PACMAN UD DEC 6. REAL TALK !!!!!!
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
Yeye Pascua:  Whatever Roach said seemed to sound to be good. I am a Manny fan from the get go but I think ODLH will come in during the fight night and humiliate the Pacman. Either way, this fight is a circus and Oscar should have kept his words and fight the better man....Antonio Margarito.
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
Anonymous user:  I have reservation on what Freddie Roach is saying. No matter what the trainer say but final outcome will still depend on a GOD given fighter from the Philippines. More Power Manny!
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
Boxer:  Pacman can KO ODL. I'm speaking through my experience. Once when I was in junior high, I fought a bully who is 20 lbs more than I was. I knocked the bully down twice. 10 to 20 pound disadvantage is not at all a problem for Pacquiao. Speed matters more.
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
nonoi:  I'll go for MONEY (correction pls!!!!!) MANNY not for OLDH(correction pls!!!) ODLH..........i respect Oscar as a boxer he has now a triple F (fortune, fame & face) around the globe but to fight and losses to Pacman is a big slap to his face, it will degrade his credibility as a legendary boxer (it will appear to the sport history anywhere). While Pacman has nothing to lose enjoying his new fortune, win or loss. GO MANNY GO!!!!!!!!!
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
BONEHEAD:  COME deC 6 We will findout and Oscar will find out waht Freddie Roach means. Pacman will school us ALL!
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
Porcupine:  Very uncharacteristic for Roach to talk like that. If he was that worried about Oscar's weight advantage he wouldn't have taken the fight to begin with.
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
Candado:  Manny will do the same thing to Oscar to what he did to David.
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
BOIEMACHO:  FREDDIE ROACH IS RIGHT! ACCEPTING THE FIGHT, MANNY IS ALREADY A WINNER + HAS A BIG CHANCE TO WIN THE FIGHT. THIS FIGHT WILL MAKE MANNY POPULAR IN THE WHOLE WORLD. WIN OR LOOSE. THE MORE PEOPLE WILL WATCH ON HIS NEXT FIGHTS. LET'S JUST WAIT ON DEC. 6 AND SEE HOW MANNY WILL PERFORM. HAVE YOU SEEN THE DAVID AND GOLIATH MOVIE? THIS IS JUST LIKE WATCHING THE SAME MOVIE. I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THIS FIGHT.
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
luisito:  some people dont agree this fight to happen, lol idiot,,or you just dont want manny pacquiao make more money this fight right,,he is the man ,he can handle it,even you he can knock you out,,lol hahahaha, ohh cammon dont screw over this fight to happen, pacman born to be what he is,,men,,you guys have no choice, but to watch the fight,,
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
mis tikrit:  i agree with freddie roach. this time oscar will suffer a broken ribs on his right hand side, sure of that!!! observe all oscar previous bout which he was knocked out. cheers to both oscar and manny. come dec. 6, it's another sports holiday in philippines!!!!!
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
knockout artist:  go! go! go! manny go! go! go! manny go! go! go! manny go! go! manny be good! =)
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
mikhail kaztrov:  I'm quite surprised that Oscar had a sparring session against Flyweight Ivan Calderon. I wonder how Calderon fared in that sparring session? I'm sure Roach knows. I don't think Roach is all after the money. I think he was kinda surprised and a bit angry when Oscar went with Mayweather Sr and after his side comments. I just hope Roach know's best.
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
K.J.:  I respect Manny big-time, but ODLH picking him as his alledged "exit" bout just goes to show that I have been right all of these years. I have been calling him CDLH (Chicken De La Hoya) because for a while he has a habit of fighting smaller guys then wanting to pund his chest about how great he is. I expect that Manny has other ideas, and I hope he knocks CDLH on his keester.

pac4ever:  the hell with margarito. oscar is wiser thant what some fools here think. who better fight with your last hurrah than the best p4p fighter in the world. margarito si what rank?. oh come on guys. my prediction pacman KO oscar in round 6.

Radam G on Mt. Mantalingajan, Palawan, Pilipinas:  All you haters, fakers, jokers, lack-of-money makers, posers and busters, Manny "PacMan," aka "Pera Pac" Pacquiao has won the Oscar, now he is going to Hollywood to train to destroy this treasure in Las Vegas come Dec 6. This is not a money-making Oscar for movie stars or fake stars, but an Oscar to be pounded on, busted up and beat down by a pugilistic super megastar of the "Pearl of the Orient Seas' -- Republica ng Pilipinas -- for eight figures. A prime Big Money Oscar De la Hoya got a close victory over "Sweet Pea" Whitaker a few years, but will get a big-time whipping from "Pera Pac." "Pera Pac" is the GOAT southpaw pugilist of all times. BMO is a great money maker, but he is no longer a punch taker. Steve Forbes -- a Mayweather Lite -- broke BMO's eye socket. Heavy-punching PacMan has this win and the money in his pocket. Pera Pac is going to hit BMO with whoopa whop after whoopa whop. In round seven, BMO is going to drop. Holla!
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
Yuvie:  Hey, it's a long time to go, anything can happen during that time. I'm hoping Roach has something up his sleeve, he seems pretty confident. He seems to be doin a lot of bad mouthing which is not like Roach. Seems like this is personal for him.
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
lostboy:  would you all please shut up!!!!!!!! mismatch, greedy, should be margarito not pacman !!!give me a break,,,,,better thing to do is wait for dec.6 and watch, then will see who is right okey!!
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
ceis:  hey the only thing i know is Pacman is still in His PRIME. wherever, whenever, whatsoever, and whoever he has a big chance of winning. Go PacMan.
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
brady:  I agree with freddie, he knows what is best for his ward especially manny whom he handled for more than ten years now..manny should not fight oscar above the 147 limit, dangerous for him if he will take the $1million in every excess pound...stick what is stipulated in the contract.
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
Allche:  I believe what Fredie Roach said everytime Manny Fight he is the only one who can predict what round does Manny's opponnent down aside from this Roach is not only a trainor he is also an ex boxer and gained more experience in analysing the out come of a fight not the self proclaimed boxing analyst so for Manny and Roach don't think what other's said their only destruct your game plan just be your self and prove that in fist fighting height and weight is not a must. Our Champ Manny will create again a history in boxing by telling the whole world that if God's told him (Manny) like David that he is the one who can beat Goliat (Oscar) this will be happen again.
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
Ramonito:  Hi all, Iam Filipino and i like both Oscar and of course Pacman, but i think for the first time our Pacman is is going to taste a goo beat and i feel sorry for him but he will take good money home, and lets be real i agree that he needs to fight the best 135 lbs who is he triyng to foul?so we Filipinos can say thats the best and shut evrybodys mouth go Pacman.l
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
mcemman:  I think Freddies know's best! He knows exactly what he is talking about... We are not boxing expert or trainer to make unsavory comments against him! Why criticize him then? Let's just be objective about this topic. I commend Freddie for his knowledge and expertize.... and I believe him! PacMan can win this one................. Speed Kills! Height does'nt win fights but talent, speed and sheer determination!!!!
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
ronaldolea72:  It's a nice observation from Coach Roach.. Manny can break DLH in the last rounds.. But if the Pacman exchanges with DLH in the early round it will be a good night for the Pacman. Remember oscar is a precise puncher. Pacman should not exchange with del ahoya, he should be careful in the early rounds. DLH can tire out easily beacuse of his age. Good fight for the FANS.
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
SammyU:  Manny"Pacman"Pacquiao will eat Oscar de la Hoya alive at round 9 for sure..... You hear it from me.
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
aliaszar:  Pacman will KO Oscar in Rd. 11, watch the speedy straight left oscar. oscar is not an Oscar he is anymore he is an OLD Oscar.
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
nevermindafter:  THIS FIGHT IS A CLASSIC. TALKING ABOUT BOXING, I BELIEVE FREDDIE MORE THAN ANYONE ELSE IN THE WORLD,,DOC COACH ROACH!! MAKE MY MAN THE GOLIATH IN THIS FIGHT!! I TRUST YOU, EVERONE HERE AT HOME TRUSTS YOU.. EVEN ODLH TRUSTS YOU.. MAKE IT HAPPEN,,MAKE IT LOUD!! AND GOD DAMN IT,,WIN OR LOSE,,GET YOUR SHARE!!!
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
donputo69 Hanging out in Puerto Rico:  i just hope it doesnt ruin his credibility... yeah, its a terrible freaking mismatch, but thats what oscar is about...money and taking a fight he knows he can win....if de la hoya were a real man he would have grown a pair and fought margarito or cotto... lets tip our hat to manny though, he fights everyone and ducks no one....he is popular, but he aint a little b!tC# like scareweather lmfaooo....who hand picks his opponents....like i said before, im rooting hard for pacquiao to win, but i just cant see that happening...just like ronaldolea72 said, if manny trade punches with de la hoya in the the first 5 rounds, IS A WRAP!!!manny is gonna get KTFO...if he jabs and counter punch during the whole fight, and makes dlh come to him, pacquiao has a good chance of beating dlh...or maybe even knock him out...lol..hey, YOU NEVER KNOW...holla back!!!!
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
renan:  Well for me if pacquiao stay up to 5 round he will come out a winner cause with my own opinion he only have a much slit winning chances for the first 5 round
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
nayr polanx:  it seems like we will see a david and goliath fighting in the ring. i wuold say it a great fight and will be the greatest fight will happen in boxing history. two warriors will met and one of them will comeout as the strongest. they both have powers, powers that leads to victory. i go for pacman, he will knockdown delahoya in 3rd round and finish the fight in the 5 round.
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
fiox:  manny and oscar are both fighters, this is the best fight in the boxing history,
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
hunks:  go roach and manny catch the big fish
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
Javier:  somebody said that if Manny uses his job he will keep Oscar away i dont see that he is too short,Oscar can keep him away with his left hand without moving he would be like hey boy behave, and then the right hand boom, there goes Manny.
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
Javier:  Hey donputo Manny is doing it for the money not because he ducks nobody, he has nothing to lose if he lose he goes back to 135lbs.
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
edith:  WELL WELL WELL!!!! SImple mathematics here... money on this fight would be equivalent to around 5 fights. very simple...GO ahead Manny -- it is for your family future... just a one time sacrifice will do.... who knows "might get lucky punch..
Wednesday Sep 3, 2008
Isaiah:  Oscar is a little girl. Manny is a brave warrior who takes on all challengers. After Manny makes big money in this fight, he'll go back down in weight and start beating down the lightweights. Manny will show the doubters why he deserves his status as the Pound for Pound King unlike the previous little coward who held that title right before him... I don't know how many times Manny has to freaking prove himself to a select few BLIND people, but whatever. Speaking of that little coward I was talking about, who was Welterweight champ and then wouldn't fight a Welterweight? Who's last "FIGHT" was in Wrestlemania? Who's dad thought his son lost his fight with Oscar? Who claimed a cable network of being racist while he was sitting on millions of dollars he got from them? Who retires at age 31 with the possibility of several good matchups and money makers just because for once, HE wouldn't be an overwhelming favorite? MANNY IS P4P KING and would beat that little cowards face in at 140 if he ever grew a pair to fight Manny. I don't have to say the other guy's name, his actions speak for themselves.
Thursday Sep 4, 2008
Anonymous user:  I just love the way Pacquiao moves from side to side. He looks very brave and makes me shiver. I wish I could meet him in person and kiss the great warrior, that's a Pinoy tradition in case you don't know. Go Pacquiao!!!!!!!!!! (he will knockout DLH before the 5th round, mark my words!!!!!)
Thursday Sep 4, 2008
FightFanWest:  Isaiah/ I don't have to mention that guys name that you are talking about because he's retired so we don't have to say his name but we all know that Manny beating that guy who's an idiot and who's house was robbed and they stole over $7million worth of money and jewelry would wipe the floor with Manny. There's no comparison. Manny need to fight the Malignaggi's and Hatton's of the world not that guy. Manny would get destroyed by that guy. I would LOVE to see that fight at 140. I would guarantee a Knockout for that guy who was really the P4P king. Manny hasn't fought anyone as of yet that should give him that crown. We can say that guy who retired and made all the stupid comments didn't want to fight Margarito or Williams but all what you guys hate to say is that he's really a 140 pounder at best. What Manny is today we have seen already, he's the new Filipino Arturo Gatti. But the only difference is that Gatti fought everyone. The same thing will happen to Manny after this fight with De La Sellout. He will be totally exposed for the fighter who he really is. The media has really fooled you guys. Thank you Pedroza for bringing that up the part on the HBO special about Manny skipping out on training because that's exactly what was said because Manny was upset about Greedy Freddie going to train Oscar. I know you guys think a lot of Greedy RoachCoach but once again the media has painted a pic of him that has totally fooled all of you. I use to be in Wildcard everyday. I know what Greedy Freddie is all about. If you guys know Greedy Freddie so well then and think he's this guru then tell me why did he not tell Kirolov how not to get KO'd by Darchinyan. Look at Freddie's last couple of fighters he hasn't won with anyone other then Pacquiao. Tell me why is that?
Thursday Sep 4, 2008
Ramonito:  All of us Filipinos we talk to much we need to keep our mouth shut, and then if he beats DLH then we ll talk this is a big challenge for Pacman i dont think he can win, but for now shut up, you guys are making us filipinos look stupid.
Thursday Sep 4, 2008
Ramonito:  Who do we think he is ?superman he hasnt fough anybody big until now and DLH is old 36 so F.... Pacman like somebody said Hatton ,Mallignagy,Guzman Cmpbell. he doesnt do anything for us so F....him.
Thursday Sep 4, 2008
STOKES:  I will not be buying this GARBAGE, not a good fight for the real fans! Lets get back to some real match making and give the fans something to look forward to.
Thursday Sep 4, 2008
rolskie:  hey! DLH be careful to my left hand i gonna knock you down. The size and weight for me is not a problem.
Thursday Sep 4, 2008
Smiley C:  This fight is for all the money. I go with Pacman in 10. Golden Boy will quit in the corner after round nine. Fo' sure!
Thursday Sep 4, 2008
Javier:  The elf wont have the power for big guys like DLH on 160lbs+, DLH wont even feel his punches, he will keep him away with the left jab and then the right hand and there goes the elf.
Thursday Sep 4, 2008
Javier:  Roy Jones calls Delahoya vs Paquiao a joke, he is right but also Jones vs Trinidad was a joke he didnt want to finish Tito fast, this is what you get a joke after joke.

Anony:  ::::: I just wish Pacquiao's faces Klitchsko's real soon but I guess it is better for him to face Pavlik first as a tune up fight. It is not that I'm underestimating Manny's power against Klitchsko but Pavlik will be a at least a good sparring.... hehehehehe :::::
Friday Sep 5, 2008
Javier:  Don Leonard, who writes for a Southern California boxing and MMA magazine, said that Pacquiao could be gambling for the big money now. “There are about six lightweights I think that can beat Manny Pacquiao like Joan Guzman, Nate Campbell, Juan Diaz, Michael Katsidis, and Urbano Antillon,” said Leonard. “He’s probably taking this fight with De La Hoya so he can make his money now before those guys beat him.”
Friday Sep 5, 2008
donputo69 Watching ESPN News:  i think pacquiao should face jermain taylor in a tune up fight...and forget klitchsko...he should go after valuev after that...power and speed in pacquiao vs aaaaaaaa ?????? !@#$%^&*...never mind....lol...holla back!!!!
Friday Sep 5, 2008
Anony:  :::::::::: Well see... style makes fights as we know and Klitchsko is a difficult fighter for Pacquiao. Valuev will be considerably easier for him so let's see... It is good he started moving up with DLH.. he will be gaining confidence little by little until he is ready for Valuev... I still find it a little difficult for Pacquiao to win the big boy but you know Manny and Freddie Roach, they can do anything. hehehehe :::::::::::::

No Love For The Modern Glove
Fight fans who are of the opinion that modern boxers could have held their own against guys from earlier eras always seem to ignore the fact that boxers back in the day were more durable than modern ones and had to be because of the different conditions under which they fought. For one thing, the lighter, non-water-resistant, horsehair gloves used in earlier eras required one to have stronger hand bones than the heavier, foam-padded, water resistant gloves used today, so any modern fighter who suffers chronic hand injuries would never have lasted very long in bouts fought in earlier eras (unless, of course, they took a little off of every punch that they threw, which, of course, would have made them much less effective fighters). ---TSS reader Feed The Cat offers some perspective on the Old vs. New debate
