Merchant thinks Oscar/Pacquiao makes sense, for both fighters, and thinks Manny has a puncher's chance.

More Merchant: On PacMan, Cotto, Oscar

By Michael Woods

TSS checked in with the poet laureate of pugilistic analysis, Larry Merchant.

We talked PacMan, Cotto’s loss and future, Oscar’s farewell fight and Pavlik’s chances at knocking out Hopkins.

Q) Larry, who should Pacquiao fight next?

A) “It’s very clear who should be next for Pacquiao, that’s Oscar. It’s a no lose fight for Pacquiao. He can make a good fight. Maybe he wins, he elevates his status. If he loses, he lost to a top fighter, a bigger guy, and he’s made more money than he’s ever made before.

“I give Manny a puncher’s chance. Manny’s in his prime, Oscar is past his prime. Oscar’s talking retirement, sometimes when a guy is talking retirement, he is retired. Hey, if Roy can go from junior middleweight to fighting a heavyweight, and Oscar can go from super featherweight lightweight to a big middleweight…”
---------------------------------------------------
Q) What was your take on the Cotto/Margarito, and what do you make of Cotto taking a knee twice, and not “going out on his shield?”

A) “It was a terrific fight. Margarito was the bigger guy, who imposed his will and size on the superior all-around fighter. On going out on your shield, I understand the questioning of that. Once upon a time, going out on your shield was expected, even demanded. That ethic has changed. Long before it was accepted here, the Brits used to accept “resigning,” or whatever, in between rounds. I don’t think he can be judged. We’ll see how he reacts in his next hard fight. Given his history at getting off the floor and dealing with adversity, I wouldn’t question his gumption. He’s earned the right to be sensible, rather than perhaps be too brave for his own good. There are a lot of different ways to give in that are not as graphic. You can lay on the canvas and jump up at 10, not protest when your corner stops it. You can foul yourself out. Judah has found a way. As for a Margarito rematch, it will always be there. There’s no reason to have one now. He has to restore himself. We’ll see what Margarito does, that fight may be bigger down the road. Cotto can then make the argument that he never experienced anything like that, now he knows how to deal with it. I think Margarito should fight Paul Williams.”
---------------------------------------------------
Q) What’s the inside scoop on what Oscar’s doing next?

A) “I have no first or second hand knowledge. But I hear Bob Arum and Richard Schaefer are supposed to meet today. I’m not sure of Oscar’s options apart from Manny. Cotto’s gone. He’s not going to fight Margarito. In terms of the kind of megabucks he wants for what he says is his farewell fight, the only other option is Mayweather. Mayweather, people tell me he’s not coming back now. Hatton’s fighting Malignaggi.”
---------------------------------------------------
Q) Can Pavlik knock out Hopkins? Or are we assuming too much, that he’ll beat Hopkins?

A) “I don’t like this fight. It was a short-sighted fight for Pavlik and his handlers. He doesn’t get credit if he wins. Chances are even if he wins he doesn’t look good. There’s always a chance he might lose going up ten pounds. I don’t get the fight, it could jeapordize the bigger fight, the winner of Jones/Calzaghe. At 26, what’s the rush? Why go this route? I’m mystified that they’d take this fight.”

Note: Merchant will be adding his wisdom and outspokenness for the Mosley/Mayorga, Calzaghe/Jones and Hatton/Malignaggi fights.

Favre in Tampa:  Larry Merchant's the best, and he's right on the money here, as usual. PacMan wants to get paid, so what better way than to fight Oscar. If he loses, hey, he lost to a significantly bigger man. And if he wins, more power to him. Cotto did not lose in disgraceful fashion. He was as honest in the moment as one can ask of a man. he gave it his all, and he'll be back for another day. A rematch is bigger in a year, 2-3 fights hence for both. The division is replete with quality opposition so he should avail himself from the ready pool of challengers. Pavlik's people should not go this route. Hopkins is coming off of a loss, a loss in which he looked not very good. Hopkins' conqueror is the guy they should be courting. Please more Merchant Woods!

Eastar:  Larry Merchant is my least favorite announcer...Pavlik Hopkins makes sense since Arum/Pavlik want no part of Abraham...Even Merchant knows you must "go out on your shield" to get respect...Oscar will fight Manny...Margarito will still duck Paul Williams. True story, man....
Wednesday Aug 6, 2008 06:42:19 PM
Isaiah:  The Oscar/Manny fight just needs to go ahead and get done with. Stupid circus isn't worth anyone's time. Pavlik versus Hopkins is still something worth seeing and it's 50/50, but I'm just repeating what I said before. How about we replace Oscar/Manny with a Lennox Lewis/Vitali Klitschko rematch?
Wednesday Aug 6, 2008 06:44:36 PM
Tempe, AZ:  Larry Merchant is one of boxings best chracters, and he's been around long enough to know what he's talking about. Props to Merchant. Oscar wants to fight the best, and Pacman happens to be the pfp king so.... If Pacquiao wants his biggest challenge then why not give it to em! Most say they won't pay for the fight, but guarantee it will be big!!!!
Wednesday Aug 6, 2008 09:03:52 PM
Stik & Move:  Oscar fighting Pacquiao? Merchant has to be DRUNK! Come on, that's more of a fight that doesn't make sense then the Pavlik/Hopkins fight. Lets just say this. Oscar is really Chicken Delahoya of fighting Margarito. Okay if he don't want to fight Margarito because of the lame excuse of not wanting his last fight to be against a Mexican, Well fight Paul Williams who beat Margarito. Last time I checked Williams is not Mexican.
Wednesday Aug 6, 2008 09:17:45 PM
donputo69:  Larry Merchant is god....Max Kellerman is his Angel....And donputo69 is Moses......I also think dlh should fight pacman and margarito should fight williams....thats just my opinion...and cotto should take a tune up fight and then fight the winner of williams and margarito...holla back ladies!!!!!!!!

Charles:  I Still Remember when Mr. Larry Merchant: In November, 2003, he scored a devastating TKO win against former three-time world champion Marco Antonio Barrera. After the fight, HBO boxing analyst Larry Merchant said, "This is a fight that will shake up the boxing world. Long live the new king." Larry Merchant is simply The Great! This is the unforgettable match up! years of years that we cannot forget! OSCAR VS PACMAN

colt45:  This fight is a prelude to another major fight and another major fight, and another major blockbuster fight…which boils down into Pac-Golden Boy, Pac-Hatton (2009), Pac-Mayweather (2009), and lastly Pac-Marquez (2009,as a retirement show for Both)…

arnold:  Pacquiao is the best. he box as if he is only dancing. Very comfortable. He has no fear. Besides his gift of heavy punch, he is able to deliver his punches hard and accurate oftentimes simply because he is very at ease and no fear when he delivers them. A punch is harder when the the boxer that delivers it is in his mind and not afraid to be hit back. Pacquiao doesnt make unnecessary punches when it hits his opponents they feel his punches. thats is why also he is not exhausted until last rounds and hes able to reserve his strenght and punching power. Also, what makes him exciting to watch is when he rotates on his opponents every now and then as he punches which makes difficult for his opponent to hit him. That style is very rare in the boxing history. Pacquiao is very comfortable in the sport with NO FEAR!!! Please watch Manny Pacquiao's video in Youtube entitled "No Fear" the Manny Pacquiao story and you will see that manny is a very different boxer.

Lance:  he's right...PACMAN should fight OSCAR! it's all positive for PACMAN...win or lose..it doesnt matter..as long as Pacman can put up a good fight...there's nothin wrong ...money wise its the logical thing to do..this is a professional sports..you get paid for the kind of entertainment you do on top of the ring....it's like Garnett moving from Timeberwolves to Celtics because of the "package" and the chance to win an NBA championship...so i see nothin wrong with that...Lets get it on!!! PACMAN vs. OSCAR!!!!!

mike:  Pacman and Oscar. Please make us fans happy. Help the negotiation succeed. No games. I want to see this fight in my lifetime. Larry Merchant - you were the first to broach this idea. A do or die fight that all - from the East Coast to the West Coast, including Canada, should watch live. Excitement at its best.

Marc:  I think Manny P. will easily loose to ODLH. He is too small compared to Osacar. MP might be youger but ODLH has all the experience. Phisically MP may have the edge but Oscar is a more intelligent boxer. sorry MP fans. But this time I think your boy will loose!
Wednesday Aug 6, 2008 11:56:59 PM
rcapanzana:  who says pac-dlh is a mismatch? a catched weight at 147lbs capped at 150 (dlh fought forbes at that weight) will make everything even considering the fact that pac brutally devastated ddiaz at fighttime weight of 147. Historically, smaller men can beat bigger men e.g. Camacho 5'6" vs Sugar Ray 5'10" by tko, tyson 5"10" vs savarese 6'4", etc (long lists). Also, ddiaz used to fight at welterweight...so, the mismatch thing is really no basis at all. Can't wait for it, bring it on, this time "the world awaits" for real. The excitement is building up all over the world...

ssss:  Just like the Margarito fans who wants to see a Margarito versus Oscar De La Hoya, so too does the PacMan's fans wants to see a Pacquiao versus De La Hoya. Please don't ruin it for everybody if De La Hoya chooses to fight Pacquiao. If Oscar chooses to fight Margarito, the Pacquiao fans would support that... no negative pundits would be said. and so should a de la hoya versus pacquiao fight if it happens. i want to see this fight happen. i don't care if pacquiao gets beat up by oscar, i just want to see how pacquiao stack up with oscar.

blue4cor:  If the fight between DLH & the P4P KING PacMan will be held on the same day the weigh-in will be conducted that will be cool. There won't be no discrepancy in weight and that will offset the size and weight issue. That's going to be be fare to everyone to both the boxing fans and the protagonists. It's really remarkable for the PacMan to have the heart and balls on this. As to who comes out victorious, I see it is Pacquiao because of his quickness he is one step ahead and because of the power the Pac's posses, I would not be surprised if he KO's DLH.

isidro cuartero:  This possibilty is now possible and tomorrow is the 1st round. I am excited being a good boxing match watcher since the muhammad ali 's time. One comment though,If it is overmatched don't overdo it just let it flow and be the entertainment as well as the great boxing match ever.

llanto75:  pacman will win.he got talents in the ring and power from GOD.he is the christian evangelist in the boxing world.he always pray and make sign of the cross.i don't think he wants to hurt his opponent;he just want to win the fight.as Larry Merchant said:if there is manny pacquiao in every division in the boxing world, the world will a better place to live, and there will be peace in the middle East!

eupal8691:  Oscar vs Manny...this could be the potential fight of the year..Manny though smaller fighter is in his prime, and oscar despite in his past prime still has the power and will to bring it on..this fight is an exciting one.cant wait to see it happen.

silentwatcher:  I have true respect for a man who speaks from the heart and does not want to be loud by refraining from using harsh language. Such is Larry Merchant. A Manny - Oscar fight is governed by selfish motives absolutely south of the border of what true boxing is all about, i.e. for two fighters to fight at the best, closest possible even terms. I mean, like the Pacquiao - Morales, Barrera- Pacquiao, Marquez-Pacquiao, Rafael Marquez - Israel Vasquez, Oscar - Trinidad, Barrera - Hasseem, etc. After all, this is Oscar's last fight, he is the PPV Queen, and Manny is the P4P King. Boxing was never designed to accomodate a boxer who has made name and fortune in his sunset fight to select an opponent he thinks he has a better chance to pull out a win with the least possibility of getting hurt. This is blatant corruption. Both parties are taking shortcuts here to attain something, the "olmighty green". It's like them saying, "Stolen water is sweet, and food eaten in secret places is very pleasant". This is greed. Even King Solomon said, all is vanity. Oscar, fight one your own size. Manny, for every advantage there is a disadvantage as night is to day; for every action, there is a corresponding reaction. The wages of sin is death, not life eternal. You might get even richer quick but sure will have proportionate renumerations. Pride precedes downfall. If this fight will be inked and if this would be Oscar's farewell dance in the ring, he should be wearing a feathered (hen's) tail in this last outing. Manny at one time had so much passion for rosters, his gusto might get revived in the ring. And how about a "Chicken Dance" for the background music for every round they would fight? This would not only probably inspire the fighters to have a romantic evening, but those who have not planned to see this fight would change their mind. I am sure whether or not the fight would be filled with fireworks of flying colored fists or sweet, meaningful, tight embraces, no one would ever demand their money back. This would be the fight for all ages. Whewww!

Fitz:  This is going to be a one hell of a fight, Pacman VS Golden Boy, isnt dat this fight really destined for PAC to be happen since Oscar retirement is approaching and he's looking for his last fight a worth remember with; look at this, opponents mention: Mayweather, Trinidad, Cotto, Mora, Margarito, and Pacman... first Mayweather - announces retirement - one down second Trinindad - cant accomplish the weight limit because of much weight - two down third Cotto - defeated by Margarito - three down fourth Margarito - rumors is that Margarito will face Paul Williams - rejected by de la Hoya because he doesnt want to fight Mexican boxer in his last fight - four down fifth Mora - he was just added in the list because he upset Vernom Forrest in there fight and some rumors that Mora will also be a possible prospect opponent for Oscar for upseting Forrest - i dont think this gonna happen - Mora face Forrest for a rematch this Sept. its not gonna happen at all - five down One remain left the P4P King Manny Pacman Pacquiao, possible reason why this fight will going to happen - Manny calling out de la Hoya - Roach desrespectful approach for telling that Pacman can k.o and beat Oscar and that Oscar cannot pull the trigger and makes Oscar bloody ego mind rise for that statement - Its going to be megabuck fight if this gonna happens - Both camps already negotating for the fight its up to the fighters decision, the promoters has already set the foundation for this event that will take place on Dec. 6 - Both fighters wants this fight badly Can't wait for this fight, i'm very excited bout this fight that will take stage on Dec. 6 ^^, btw i'm 20 yrs. of age from Philippines Larry Merchant your the best....GOD BLESS US ALL!!! cheers

baklita:  my salute to larry merchant and jim lampley as the two best boxing analysts in the entire universe. pacman-dela hoya may be seen as the david and goliath of boxing. I see mismatch in the first few rounds in favor of oscar, but if pacquiao survives it... manny will take over the fight in the later rounds. pavlik-hopkins? I foresee hopkins will be k.o. hopkins is long past his prime. he's retired and will be retired again by pavlik. I admire cotto for giving his best against margarito. miguel was so honest and a real sportsman in his defeat. I thought I never like this guy, but he showed his best in winning and losing. does anyone have his phone number? aihihihi!!! baklita

ding:  There is a talk about ODLH intends not to actually fight Manny but give him a dose or a taste of his own medicine when Manny did not honor his contract with Golden Boy Promotions and instead became under Bob's. It's like offering a candy to a child and then not giving when the child wants it. I hope it is not because it will leave a bad taste in every boxing fans who really make boxing business thrive. I think if this will happen then Boxing, as a form of entertainment will definitely loss its single big draw for this year and maybe may affect other fights. I know Manny does not need this fight more than those who want to see a challenging fight like this which are the viewing public may it be the boxing fans or those person willing to be entertained.
Thursday Aug 7, 2008 03:02:40 AM
johnn.M.:  i think provably larry is right about pacman, oscar fight i think manny have nothing to lose..even oscar would never regret about it he wants a good fight so needs a good and the best fighter and its manny..many dont like the idea bout manny, oscar fight but i think its gonna be the fight of the year..yes i agree bout the big dis advantage but hey many could happen and we dont know wat manny can do..its like a rat chase by a cat the rat always have ideas how to escape..will i think go for it.. thanks

Marvhin29:  WELL...If we talk about the match up between this two great fighters maybe i would say this is a Dream Fight, and the world will awaits if it is happen, but if you going to analyze what kind of match up is this (ODH vs MP) i would say this is a crazy fight, and if we talk about GREATNESS both of this fighters is defenitely has tremendous legacy,I FEEL THAT IF THIS FIGHT WILL HAPPEN,Im going to say....this is the best fight that never gonna be happend in the next generation and we people who live into this generation are VERY LUCKY to witness this two Kings face each other like DAVID & GOLIATH.

Doc Edward:  Larry Merchant may have a lot of detractors and enemies but you cannot deny the depth of his boxing analysis. Pacman-Delahoya should become a reality and for those who says it's a farce, I doubt if they won't take part in the most significant boxing match ever. We should be grateful it will happen in our lifetime. Let's get ready to rumble!!!!
Thursday Aug 7, 2008 04:11:07 AM
Johnny:  Larry's right. So, Bring ODLH and Pac on! Manny fights best when he's a huge underdog... that's when the true warrior in him comes out! He will be relentless against Oscar. This will be one hell of a fight.

mcemman:  PacMan vs ODLH is such a good matchup i think! P4P king vs Pay Per View King! Size does not win fights but talent! Speed KILLS! You cannot just count out the PacMan considering his speed and skill! Oscar is in his sunset while the PacMan in his prime time! I don't know how ODLH can handle the speed of the PacMan but somehow i don't know how much power still left from ODLH after fighting at 147? Another question is how much the PacMan can take from a natural bigger guy? Sounds interesting isn't it? So let's make this fight happen to answer all the questions... I want this fight to happen!

Isaiah:  I've been calling Mayweather the punk that he is for good reason, but it seems like now, Oscar de la Hoya has become just as much as a coward, bully, and punk. Both punk out against the REAL Welterweights. Both have been cowards and bullys in recent boxing history where they used to be respectable. When Mayweather rematched Castillo after a very close first fight, Mayweather showed a lot of guts. Oscar pushes him severly like noone but Castillo ever has and Mayweather chickens out and retires 3 months before the rematch. On the other hand, Oscar's last three fights have been against Mayorga, Mayweather, and Steve Forbes?! All 3 naturally much smaller and he's going to finish his career against tiny in comparision Manny P?!! The only guy that could possibly beat Oscar (ONCE!) out of those 4 is Mayweather. I've lost all respect for Oscar. He learned from his mistakes and would have beat Mayweather down in a rematch no doubt, but he's now scum. COWARD!!! Margarito, Paul Williams, or Cotto would beat the crap out of Oscar. ::NEWS FLASH:: GOLDEN BOY LOOKS AT WELTERWEIGHT ELITE AND LOSES MANHOOD. NEW NAME GOLDEN GIRL. PACMAN PERFORMS MIRACLES AND KNOCKS GOLDEN GIRL INTO RETIREMENT.
Thursday Aug 7, 2008 06:03:48 AM
Isaiah:  Oscar has never truly been knocked out. The love tap from Bernard Hopkins hardly counts. With Pacman's belief in a higher power, YOUR'RE NOT IT DON, I can see Pacman knocking Oscar's greedy butt into a coma. Manny has huge will and skill and should never be taken lightly.

Autorun.inf:  Boxing is not about money. It's about fighting, that's why it's called boxing. So what's the point in matching Mini to Oscar?

alfredo quiambao:  oscar pacquiao fight is not a dream!!! maybe we can see the size of golden boy but it doesnt matter cause they will fight in a 147 pounds so what is the Q. on it? let just the fight happen o we can see what is the real boxing!! i been watching and a boxing fan since iwas a 6 years old and watch pacman while hes starting in non pro, and always watch the fight of golden boy,, dont worry about the size just worry if what can pacman can do inside the ring just trust on his speed and GOD given streght on him.. no one can easily bitten pacman if hes hungry cause he is "TROY"!! inside the boxing arena.... hahahaha! just enjoy watching them you will not regret promise!!!
Thursday Aug 7, 2008 07:16:19 AM
Stik & Move:  I agree with you Isaiah, there's no way that Oscar should be fighting Pacquaio. He is entirely too small. Whoever thinks Pacquaio can beat Oscar is really not a true boxing fan, Oscar said he wanted to always be in a real tough fight, then why not fight Williams, Clottey or Margarito. He wouldn't even fight Winky Wright. Oscar has fooled the public for years and now he wants to fight a guy who has never even faced a 140 pound fighter yet much less 147. This is what's hurting boxing. I'm not defending Mayweather but the same people here would be criticizing Mayweather if he was to challenge Pacquaio. And we know Mayweather would basically kill Pacquaio. I wouldn't want to see that fight either. If you want to call someone a PUNK then the first name should be Oscar Delahoya. He never fought Kostya Tsyzsu when he was fighting ole a**Chavez(twice). Who the hell is Carpentier?
Thursday Aug 7, 2008 08:26:27 AM

Radam G:  Merchant -- the tell-it-with-some-commonsense media merchant of the hurt business -- is right on spot, like always. This guy is great. Holla!

Ray:  I am pleased to see so many comments praising Larry Merchant . Larry brings a touch of class to boxing, and his calm well thought out analysis is a perfect balance vis a' vis the verbose delivery of the more excitable Max Kellerman. Larry and Max are a great pair of knowledgeable commentators, they don`t come any better than that. An Oscar vs Manny matchup will be exciting. I don`t think Manny can seriously hurt Oscar, and I believe Oscar will control the fight, and score a TKO around the 8TH round. Hopkins appears to be gun shy (that is why he lost twice to Jermaine Taylor). Hopkins will try to beat Pavlik by fighting in spurts and his usual his crafty manner ; however, the ghost will track him down, corner him and do major damage. Pavlik will win by TKO in 6 rounds. Hopkins will again retire ! Radam is a young Larry Merchant in training ! Ray

J:  What's everybody's problem about pacquiao fighting dela hoya?... They want it, let them have... Let's just enjoy watching it... Boxing, whether about money, pride, or anything else, is still boxing.. Two fighters inside a ring, pounding at each other until one wins, and the other loses... No more, no less... Keep on punching ya'll!!..
Thursday Aug 7, 2008 12:38:43 PM
Stik & Move:  If Oscar fights Pacquaio then everyone that has ragged on Mayweather and complained about who he should fight shouldn't say anything about him anymore because Mayweather is a legitimate 140. Why is it that Oscar can fight Ricardo Lopez and it's okay? This is what's hurting boxing. Schaffer of Golden Boy said if we don't want to see the fight between Pacquaio/Delahoya then don't watch it. Well they definitely won't be getting my $50. Oscar said that he wouldn't fight another Mexican as his last fight but he was entertaining the idea of fighting Sergio Mora. CALL A CHICKEN A CHICKEN DELAHOYA...LOL

rowena d.garcia:  If Pacman survives 12 rounds against ODLH, win or lose it will add feathers to his hat . He will be remembered as one of the greatest boxers of all time. Lets face it, every one wants a 20 miilion bucks chance of a lifetime. Go for broke Manny!!!

enzo2004:  Again , Larry Merchant is right...Let ODLH and Pacman go for it. Pacman's the new P4p king and it just so happens that this kid from the Philippines disrespected ODLH (as they would say) and beleives that its a personal thing. The Golden wants to prove Freddie Roach wrong that HE STILL HAS IT and that he can totally dominate the New P4P king and knock him out. On the other hand PACMAN wants to prove to the world that he is destined also to be a LEGEND and that fighting the Golden Boy (of course plus the $$$$ he's gonna make) would elevate him to boxing immortality. free willy:  This is once in a lifetime, to see both with full of accomplishment, great fighters, Manny on his prime and Oscar a bigger fighter and Elite boxer during his prime, let see how much gas left on DLH, and how much power and speed can M Manny delivered, don't underestimate David against Goliath. Long time we didn't see an exiting fight like this. And pride and honor to bring to their country and origin, which DLH roots from Mexico And Manny from Philippines. Let see if Manny still tag as Mexican Assasin or DLHOYA will retired and exit inthis brutal sport with respect and pride....

cmt29:  everyone seems to dislike the idea of pacman vs odlh it's not even a done deal but granting that the fight happen man i'll be watching this fight i'll cancel all my commitments sit down with an ice cold beer and some peanuts and enjoy the entertainment c'mon guys this is once in a lifetime chance of seeing this great boxers mixing it up no matter who comes out winner doesn't matter at all. You mention the names of margarito, hatton, cotto, etc man they can wait if only we can have them fight on a weekly basis so we can know who among them is the best but we all know that can't happen so we all have to wait or maybe we can all send them in the ring at the same time just like what pro wrestling do. One thing i'm sure of manny he will not back down on any challenge and pls dont say its for the money, Pacman used to sell pan de sal on the streets of Gen. Santos he doesn't even know what a dollar looks like until he was introduced to boxing the American way. When manny fought diaz and didn't do well on ppv they say the pac is not fighting his own match now he's fighting the odlh he's still not fighting his match odlh can always come out of retirement and fight whoever wants to fight him if the fights gonna make money and this is what's this all about its all about MONEY and manny's just riding the bus can you blame the guy can you blame odlh or bob a. No one's at fault here this is just the way it is reality and to the so called experts or purists no offense meant guys if the fight is on i'm gonna be there wether on ppv or whatever i'm gonna watch the fight and man i'm excited but i'm not betting.

kolokoy:  Hhhhmmm... By the way, Who is moving up to 147? Manny weigh 150+ in regular days. They differ only in the height. Oscar is taller than Manny, has the longer reach, but the real question is who has power to stop his opponent nor knock him out? Remember guys, this is like the game of basketball, if you're tall but poor field goal pecentage you're sort of a bench guy; football, if you have speed but no power you're useless and easily to be knocked out; soccer, you have the power and speed but no defense same you're useless. I remember the last opponent (before Pacman) of David Diaz, Santa Cruz, Diaz was shorter, all Santa Cruz have the advantage. Diaz was losing all rounds but what happened? Larry was right in the first place.

Anony:  I don't get the critic on Cotto going to a knee. The way I see it, lots of knocked out punchers would have gone to a knee too if they had the chance. The only difference is the rythm of the fight. Of course you can't go to a knee in the very momentum you are exchanging punches, there is no chance on doing it. On Cotto's case he studied the situation, backed up and went to a knee. Kind of gives the impression he was gasping for air instead of retreating from the fight. Remember he got his nose broke on the second round and went 9 more rounds without breathing right. How can you keep Margarito's pace without F breathing???? If I were Margarito I would be very happy he had the luck of breaking Cotto's nose because that surely helped the overall fight outcome. Remember the fight was even before the 11th, one more round and maybe history have been written differently, get it???? And there are haters that will go saying Cotto quit the fight but if you think about it twice, Cotto gave the best to the fight and never even hesitated on fighting a dangerous fighter like Margarito. He gets credits on everything. Are there any real boxers here in the TSS universe???? I will like to hear your impression on Cotto's fighting in that condition (10 rounds with a broke nose). That should enlight all of us who had never experienced putting globes on.

Isaiah:  Anony man, I'm with you on this. Cotto has a will of steel. He's all fighter. I'd like to see these guys dissrespecting him box 10 rounds with a broken nose and against a bad guy like Margarito. What does everyone think? Does anyone really think Cotto could not take a knee even twice to catch his freaking breath? Cotto DID NOT quit. He was beaten into submission. Let's see Mayweather get his nose broken against Cotto early on and fight the rest of a 12 rounder? It wouldn't happen. Cotto won't lose again anytime soon. Rematch next year!

donputo69:  if cotto would to break scareweather's nose in the second round, he'll probably take a knee in the 3rd and quit..lmfaoooo...EVERY DIE HARD BOXING FANS KNOWS that scareweather wants no part of these 2 warriors...ooohhhh...and by the way....mark this on your calendar...sept 22...THE RETURN OF SCAREWEATHER.....but too bad he's not coming back to box...lmfaooo...is the premier of DANCING WITH THE STARS...muahahahahahaha...so all you scareweather fans stay tune...lol...holla back!!!!!

pac4ever:  still dumb people doubt pacquiao power punches. i guess manny is to prove once again for the 100th time that they are wrong.

Coco:  Now that it looks like DLH-Pacman might be the next "mega" fight of boxing, I'll just look forward into the future as well and start making my own predictions. I say MARGO fights Williams, DLH has his farewell fight with PACMAN and COTTO fights the winner of CLOTTEY-BERTO. Then the winner of MAYORGA-MOSLEY fight the winner of BERTO-CLOTTEY.

randy:  pacman, pinoy imortality
Friday Aug 8, 2008 05:32:14 PM
Boxer:  Pac Man cannot beat Oscar. All you Filipinos are dreaming. He couldn't KO Marquez. He was hurt badly by Marquez too. Oscar is bigger and hits way harder than Marquez. Put ur money on a KO for Oscar. Too easy. If Oscar had fought David Diaz he wud have KOd him in one round. That's no joke.
Friday Aug 8, 2008 06:07:56 PM
boxing fan:  Oscar has the experience, the skills and the discipline to make it very difficult for pacman to win. He has more than 200 amateur fight wins and 160 plus of those W's came by way of KO. same trend followed him in his pro days now that's a statistic that's hard to ignore. Pac has had his own share of battles in the pros but dela Hoya's record looks much ,much better at least on paper. it's a very intriguing fight, I'm a huge fan of both fighters although my nationality makes me root for the pacman. i just hope no serious harm happens to both.
Saturday Aug 9, 2008 02:14:01 AM
Isaiah:  Sorry boxing fan. I'm a Manny fan, but if serious harm happened in this fight, it would happen to Manny. This is a bad career move for one fighter and one GOLDEN GIRL. I guess Oscar thinks he'll look like a man by winning against a man that's going to be about 20 pounds lighter. After this "FIGHT", Oscar can go make Margartio's dinner and shine his shoes as a consellation prize.

denlovpac:  I always watch boxing matches. Will it be from HBO or SHOWTIME or Whether stupid experts say it is a mismatch. I don't believe them because for me.. ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN IN BOXING!!! About Larry Merchant, his insights in the game is second to none. He is a genius and a legend. What I like more is the way he analyze the fight. He is very fair and doesn't make absurd predictions. I hate those so called genius in boxing telling us "There's no way this fighter can win or can defeat this fighter" Examples are Ricardo Lois of boxing confidential (on his statement that there is no way Margarito will defeat Cotto) and Pedro Fernandez of Ring Talk (who's hate and jealuosy for PACMAN is evident). These guys should learn from Larry Merchant. LARRY & JIM LAMPLEY ARE THE BEST! Unfortunately Mr. Max Kellerman is a "trying hard". Sorry for you Max!

ali :  pac will get knock out by oscar manny can punch but at the weight that there fighting at it won't have enough power to hurt oscar. One thing you got to remeber is oscar has a very good chin he only been stop once my a very big middleweight and that was a body punch. Manny not a body puncher and i bet he can't fight going backwards and he's going to have to cause oscar so much bigger and with mayweather sr. as his trainer he'll out box pac so i dont see no way pac can win
Sunday Aug 10, 2008 07:44:44 PM
Anony:  Hey denlovpac. Sincerely Max Kellerman do his job fine. He shows a bunch of knowledge when it goes to rules and procedures, back up his stories with history lessons, he do great comments during fights without feeling biased, etc. To me the whole HBO crew do a great job. Lennox Lewis sometimes speaks too slow in the middle of the action but that is his personality. But there are haters around who you can sense speak with envy and they are not even boxers or work for the media... so why pay attention to you????
Monday Aug 11, 2008 07:54:58 AM
peterueb:  PAC gets hit too easy and De la Hoya would carve him up. HBO use to be the best but they are now company men biased towards their fighters. cboxinginfo has a good take on max Kellerman. Marg/Hoya would be a classic with Oscar winning it is the fight he asked for something that will be challenging and cement his legacy by showing a true test of his heart
Monday Aug 11, 2008 08:35:32 AM
PUNCHER:  Big question is.....who has De La Hoya beaten recently? Rest my case dear boxing experts.

1:  I feel a need to help. Larry works hard to coin controversial stuff. I've had a love -hate relationship with him going back to when he was a scribe on the east coast. But never for a moment did I find his insight outlandish. If you don't like Larry, fine, I find I don't either most of the time. His insight however, is as good as anyone's. If you don't think he's remarkably knowledgeable, we've just identified the problem. As for Mad Max, get used to him because his star is going to burn brighter and brighter and he's going to be around for a very long time. I was impressed with how he went from a high energy guy who loved boxing to a very informed guy who loves boxing. In all the years I've been watching the fight game, his ascension has been the most impressive. Oh, and if you think at this stage of the game the Pacster is in over his head with a long in the tooth DLH, the saying, "and remove all doubt" is applicable. Props to Oscar for being willing to go out with a real challenge. And it would be a real challenge. A little help here please. You guys who spend time in boxing gyms, tell our friends how many times you see busy, smaller fighters cuffing around bigger sparring partners. Sparring partners that can fight a bit as well.

2009 Reader Of The Year Weighs In On Legacies Of Pacquiao And Mayweather
"Pacquiao has proven....in the ring... time and time again that he is the greatest of this time. He has earned his respect. He begs for nothing. He is a man content with his growth, his family and his achievements. A man the world has now turned it's eyes to behold. Floyd Mayweather is not even close in stature. He may possess the greatest skills but he is not the Face of Boxing today. Google Manny Pacquiao. There are 20 million searches. Google Floyd. There are 6.5 million. Look at the NYTimes, the Wall Street Journal and Time. Count how many words were used these past years to mention Floyd Mayweather. Then count the words still being printed about Manny. And keep counting. As I've said many times, Floyd has been too clever by half. He has short changed his public.....and has out-smarted himself. Manny will fight but a few more times. Enjoy it while you can. He is an all time great pugilist. Floyd, with all of his remarkable skills lack the will to be truly great in the biggest sense of the word. His legacy will look more like Holmes that Ali. He has earned it." ---November is half-way gone, but we don't need to keep counting ballots. It's a landslide. Fe'Roz has won the 2009 Reader of the Year award. His comments add to the website immeasurably, and he epitomizes the thoughtful, respectful, educated fan of pugilism we strive to cater to at TSS. Congrats, Fe'Roz, and please accept my thanks for being the valued member of this community that you are. Sincerely, Editor Mike
