Can the wily vet pull off the upset? Does Pavlik have the experience to go into deep waters with Hopkins? Because to this point, Hopkins ALWAYS takes his foe into the deep end of the pool...

Pavlik Trainer Promises To Stop Hopkins

By Michael Woods

It’s on. On October 18, the pride of Youngstown, unbeaten Kelly Pavlik, will try to do what no man has done. He will try and prove his mettle, and send a message that he is the top active American fighter, bar none, by being the first man to stop Bernard Hopkins. That is a tall order, even if Hopkins is 43 1/2, and has a 2-3 record in his last five outings. Can the 26 year-old Pavlik, with 30 KOs in his 34 wins, pull it off? TSS is leaning toward saying he can, especially after Ron Borges talked to Freddie Roach last week, and Roach vocalized his concern about Hopkins’ decision to soldier on.

The two fighters and their team-members traveled to NY on Wednesday morning-afternoon, to get tongues wagging about their Oct. 18 showdown, which will unfold in Atlantic City.

No race cards were played (thank God of that) and there were no physical shenanigans either. Hopkins, who has been prone to outlandish acts to hype up his bouts of late, was on his best behavior.

Hopkins (48-5, 32 KOs), who last gloved up against Joe Calzaghe on April 19 (SD12 loss), surprised some folks with his low key comments.

“I’m a boxing fan and I am a fan of Kelly Pavlik,” he said.  “I am a fan of Pavlik because he became a champion the right way.   Not because of politics, but because he came up through the ranks and beat them all.  I know what makes a good fight, but I never thought I would be fighting him.  Kelly has a lot of heart and determination, but saying that, I’ve never been afraid of a ghost.

Hopkins isn’t listening to those who are recommending that he step away from the sport before he absorbs a nasty beating.

“I believe I’m coming into this fight as the winner.  People know me and boxing people know me and they know I’m a threat against anyone.  I am willing to say that I am coming into this fight to win.  When we get into the ring – it will just be me and him – and that means it is 50/50.”

“This is a blue collar fight.  It’s like two guys working on a pier and get in a fight.  It’s two guys fighting with their hard hats on.  This is a blue collar sport – the kind of fight that could happen in any inner city – except now I’m from Philly and he’s from Youngstown. Kelly comes in and throws the hammer down and it’s my job to take that away from him.

“Pavlik has fought three times against fighters that I know of – Miranda and (Jermain) Taylor (twice).  I don’t know any of the others.  But I have nothing bad to say about Kelly Pavlik.”

Well, there is more press to do for the bout, so maybe later in the tour, Hopkins will look to get inside the younger man’s head, with some incendiary talk.

“This fight is about two guys,” Hopkins said.  “One guy is coming forward and the other guy is looking to do his thing and that spells action.”

Pavlik’s trainer, Paver Jack Loew, has become known for his ability to traffic skillfully in pre-fight trash talk. He promised his guy would do what Clinton Mitchell, Roy Jones, Jermain Taylor, and Calzaghe had been unable to do in their successful efforts against Hopkins: stop him.

“This is a great opportunity being able to fight a guy like Bernard Hopkins,” Loew said. “This fight will take Kelly to another level.  He’s a great fighter, but on October 18 it will come to an end for Bernard Hopkins.  It is over for him.”

The humble Pavlik was more chill in his take on the upcoming showdown with the all-time great.

“I want to fight the best,” Pavlik said. “People talk and ask about why I am fighting Bernard Hopkins. You’ve got a legend right here.  I don’t know about Calzaghe – I guess I would have to shoot him in the foot to get him to stop running from me.  All I can tell you is that I will train as hard as I can to get in the best shape that I can be in for Bernard Hopkins.”

Trainer Nazim Richardson said that Pavlik’s style will be good for his client. “This guy comes to fight and that is good for Bernard Hopkins,” Richardson said. “John David Jackson will be supporting me in this fight.  When you look at Bernard Hopkins, you are looking at a legend and you have to respect him for that.  He has been through the wars and the fires.  He has never been cut and has never been beat up.”

Until now.

How about it, TSS Universe. Will Hopkin’s glorious run end badly, with a beatdown? Or can he summon all his wily techniques and massive reserve of will, and pull off an upset in AC?

Send comments, now.

Yuvie:  There will be no knockout. Pavlik just hasn't got the skills to be messing around with Hopkins, even at 42. Calzaghe & Taylor beat Hopkins because they were quicker. Pavlik is a very slow fighter. I can see this being a perfect opponent for Hopkins. I believe Hopkins will hustle and bustle to get a clear win over Pavlik. This will be reminiscent of the Hopkins/Tarver fight. Pavlik won't know what to do with himself after about 6 rounds. You gotta remember that his punches weren't the same in the second fight with Taylor. He did rock Taylor but he wasn't hitting as hard as in the first fight. Pavlik needs to just stay at middleweight. I can really see this back-firing for Arum.

Jeremy:  How do we know Roach wasn't fronting so Pavlik would take Bernard lightly? Bernard doesn't fight unless he thinks he can win. Maybe he see's something. I wouldn't count him out, and don't think he's getting knocked out.
Tuesday Aug 5, 2008
Miguel Quitto:  i liked the fact that he made a reference to Calzaghe. It sucks because im a big fan of all three fighters but i gotta take Kelly over all of them. He isn't THAT slow yuvie. I think Kelly will look just ok against Hopkins. (considering Hopkins makes every fight look sloppy.) but he will do enough to end his career. Kelly has heavy hands and i don't know how much a 43 yr old B-Hop can do against him.

The Real Deal:  Pavlik is slow and he's really a basic 1-2 guy. He is dealing with a fighter Bernard who knows all the little tricks to set Pavlik up. In order for Pavlik to win he can't make this a thinking game. He has to go in a keep the pressure on Hopkins throughout the entire fight and good things will happen for him but he has to realize that Hopkins in now only a counter puncher who is looking to buy time. Hopkins doesn't want a fast pace. If Pavlik has a fast pace then I could see him winning if he's not getting hit to much and Hopkins will hit him. I'm glad Hopkins is not playing the race card, that shows me that he is confident that he can beat Pavlik.

Anonymous user:  Yuvie what are you smokin'? He will punish Hopkins like he has never been punished before. If Hopkins chooses to actually fight...and not clinch and clinch and clinch...he very well could get knocked out. But he won't mix it up too much because he never does. Hopkins hustle??? That is not and has never been his style! He will try and pick his spots and when he tastes Pavliks power he will pull a John Ruiz on him again and again. I don't like this fight for Pavlik not because he won't win, he will easily, it won't prove much for him in the end. Unanimous decision for Pavlik in a poor and last performance for Hopkins.

Radam G:  B-Hop will be hop-along cripple after this bout with a white boy. Don't do it, Bernard. Go for the heavies! Holla!
Tuesday Aug 5, 2008
Evans:  Why is B-Hop being so nice. LOL Maybe getting older is mellowing him out. I've never seen B-Hop show this much respect for an opponent. This fight is all about how much does B-Hop have left. If he isn't a washed up yet then he will give Pavlik the fight off his life. And I think B-Hop still has enough left for this fight. But he should retire after this. I mean is he going to keep fighting and fight into his 50's and do a senior citizen circuit
Tuesday Aug 5, 2008
Budman:  What are you guys smokin'?! Hopkins is in real trouble in this fight which is more likely why he's not shooting off his mouth. Yuvie, Hopkins hasn't "hustled" in years and he will not do so in this fight. He will try and pick his spots and counter punch and if he does decide to actually fight Pavlik he very well could get knocked out. He will counter puch and clinch, counter punch and clinch....repeat about 100 times! As has been proven many times in the past the Ruiz, aka Bosten Crab, aka Johnny Louise technique does not work and makes for lousy fights. Pavlik will win in an easy decision and could knock "BHop" out if "Bhop" actually decides to mix it up. This should convince Hopkins to hang them up.....but even if he gets KO'd he probably will go on and bore us and annoy us further.

cmeshyne:  hopkins is a old veteran who has never been knocked out it hasnt happened yet so im gone figure it wont happen in this fight, age has nothing to do with taking a punch, he will use every trick in the book to dictate this fight i picture bernard waiting for the same ol 1-2 and timing a perfect straight right, he's not gone sit there and bang with kelly thats obvious, i see a masterfull boxing lesson issued to the hands of the ghost
Tuesday Aug 5, 2008
BigDaddy:  Pavlik fun to watch plus Hopkins putrid to watch equals mediocre fight. This shouldn't even be on TV ,much less PPV.
Tuesday Aug 5, 2008
Nuckle:  BHOP is only being polite at the moment. Expect him to start getting into Pavlik's head closer to the fight. Or maybe there's really nothing to use against Pavlik because he's a blue collar fighter who's very quiet and humble. He already played the race card so that's played out. I'm sure BHOP does have some tricks up his sleeve though. He did take an indirect shot at Pavlik though, saying he only heard of 2 fighters Pavlik fought. Taylor and Miranda. Me too and I already forget his last opponent. He needs to retire win or lose, but he will win UD.
Tuesday Aug 5, 2008
Isaiah:  Pavlik's last opponent was a guy called Gary Locket from Europe somewhere who came into that fight undefeated at something like 32-0, not that it mattered as he was knocked out in the 3rd round. I'm not paying for this novelity fight, but Pavlik/Hopkins should be interesting. I picked Hopkins, but I'm not sure anymore. It might be better to stay neutral in a fight like this. Big respect for current champ and former champ. One thing Pavlik has is big power, but one thing Hopkins has going for him is that he's never taken even a medium sized beating.

andy from newcastle:  Yuvie, Real Deal, gutsy comments, made me rethink a bit. I certainly agree, no way does B-Hop get knocked out, the only one capable of doing that around this weight is Abraham who should have been tested for gamma radiation after the Miranda fight. However I'm still inclined to think that Bernard, sly old fox that he is, is now just too old to be mixing it up with these quality young dogs. I don't see it being an easy night for either fighter, and although there's no way he gets ko'd, we could see a TKO or Bernard deciding to announce his retirement before the final bell. If he can pull it out of the bag or even make it a close call, expect a rematch between him and the winner of the RJJ Calzaghe match, especially if it is Jones. By the way, congrats and welcome to the club Anony, we seem to be pitching for the same team at the moment (Go Vikings !!!). Toonoy

mortcola:  Pavlik isn't slow. Blazing hand speed isn't his game, but he is fast enough to land consistently at a high rate against everyone he has fought, at every style. He punches fluidly, throws variety, sets up his shots and has excellent timing. And the snap to take your head off. He does start from the basic one-two, but he mixes it up effectively after that with hooks and uppercuts from both sides. If your analysisis that he is slow and basic , then you're under-rating him badly. Hopkins will make him think, counter him, and make him miss a little, but he won't be able to keep him off for long, and he won't be able to handle trench warfare with Kelly - he doesn't go that speed anymore. Pavlik by decision or late TKO (assuming anyone can actually hurt B-Hop).

DaveB:  Hopkins what the heck are you doing? I don't like the way this one looks for you. Probably not a knock out but definitely a beating even with your one punch and grab all defensive style.
Tuesday Aug 5, 2008
aaron, uk:  Hopkins will not be knocked out. Close fight...
Wednesday Aug 6, 2008
Papo:  Styles make fights, Hopkins will nullify Kelly's power and win a majority Decision over Pavilik. Taylor will knockout Jeff Lacy, and Hopkins and Taylor will have a rubber match at 170 wich Hopkins will win and ride off into the sunset because Roy will out price himself after his win over Calzaghe.

Eastar:  Executioner!
Wednesday Aug 6, 2008
959 Santa:  It will be a typical Hopkins fight. Very elusive cagey and the southern punch. But it won't be enough. Pavlik is younger and has fast reflexes unlike Hopkins who is older and can't seem to find the openings anymore. This is a battle of a once great fighter Hopkins vs. a young and upcoming fighter Pavlik. I will pick the younger fighter probably by decision. Although Pavlik has the tools to defintley stop Hopkins.
Wednesday Aug 6, 2008
Eastar:  I don't think Pavlik can beat Antonio Tarver...But Hopkins can. So Hopkins will beat Pavlik, and make him "lik" canvas...true story, man.
Wednesday Aug 6, 2008
Budman:  Easter you're smokin the same thing as Yuvie, Papo and all of these other "BHop" losers. He is finished and all of you need to watch a little more of Pavlik fighting before you make your comments. Pay per view for this fight is a joke. Has anyone felt they made a good buy after paying for a Hopkins fight!? I'll be watching the re-broadcast of "BHop" saying he was robbed or making some excuse as to why he quit or hopefully giving Pavlik his just due like more of you should be doing! The Ghost will win UD, TKO or KO period, end of story!
Wednesday Aug 6, 2008
de:  were is kelly slow did you see his last fight he was very fast / it may only be lockett but he was good/ best at 160/170 u will see soon
Wednesday Aug 6, 2008
kev:  Gary Lockett did not come in with a 32-0 record in the pavlik fight..he came in 31-1 and has only fought journeymen b4 fighting pavlik..that fight was just to make pav look good..bernard hopkins is no gary lockett
Wednesday Aug 6, 2008
Smiley C:  I don't know about this one. Fo' sure!
Wednesday Aug 6, 2008
Robert Curtis:  If Pavlik doesn't win this one and win it strong, he should put on a dress after the fight. I know we're getting short on legends these days, but B-Hop is just too damn old. The referee better be good and on his toes or, God forbid, B-Hop may end up in D-Block of a rest home eating his lunch through a tube. It's not a matter of power-punching, it's the accumulation of blows, and as Freddie Roach suggested, Bernard is probably already a few taps south of the line. I agree with Radam about B-Hop stepping up to the heavies where it seems like any cheeseburger-chomping bindle-stiff can coast along these days. PS: I think "ghost" coming out of B-Hop's mouth is code for white boy.
Wednesday Aug 6, 2008
Yuvie:  I want to see Pavlik win this fight in style, no doubt about it. Boxing needs Pavlik to win this fight. I just have a nagging feeling that Hopkins will win this somehow. How you can even compare Lockett and Hopkins is beyond me. Pavlik was faster than lockett because they were in completely different leagues. He hammered Lockett early on to the point where Lockett had had enough by round 2. In this fight, Hopkins is the bigger man. I will gladly eat my words if Pavlik proves me wrong. We'll soon see how good Pavlik actually is. No one's ever properly defeated Hopkins since Roy Jones Jr. Pavlik deserves all the respect if he beats Hopkins like you guys seem to think he.
Wednesday Aug 6, 2008
Yuvie:  seem to think he.........will.

bostonboxingjunkie:  I'm new on this site but I had to comment because BHop is one of my all time favorite fighters and Pavlik is one of my favorite new school fighters in the game right now. First of all, I'd like to say unequivocally that a young BHop would kill Pavlik. There is no doubt in my mind about this. BHop is a legend because of his rock solid defense, heavy counters, and scrappy tactics. Which is the perfect style to counter Pavlik's linear offensive style. Now age is the equalizer in this matchup but styles make fights. Pavlik will have to break BHop's defense which still looks very solid in his fight with Cal. Also Pavlik's defense after his throws are not tight as can be seen in his fights against Jermain getting blasted all over the place with counters. BHop lost to Cal because Cal is a hit and run type of fighter but Pavlik's style plays right into BHops strong points. BHop will counter but I'm just not sure if his counters will have the power to back up Pavlik who from what I've seen has a pretty solid chin. BHop may or may not win this fight but I do not see Pavlik winning by TKO or KO. This will be a fight decided by points.
Wednesday Aug 6, 2008
Isaiah:  Pavlik is fairly fast, but Calzaghe is very fast. Pavlik can hit harder and may make more of an immpresion on Hopkins than Calzaghe ever could. Jermain Taylor can hit hard himself, but didn't show it with his 2 fights with Hopkins. Also Jermain was running for his life against Hopkins in the last round of their first fight. Talk about a dubious decision. Anyway, Pavlik should study the Taylor and Calzaghe fights with Hopkins very carefully. B-HOP is still a defense master and I'm not sure if the knockout CAN happen in this fight. Might be best just to try and tire the old man out and beat on him for all 12 rounds. Maybe Hopkins will finally show his age fully and submit to THE POWER of THE GHOST. On the other hand, who knows what could happen with B-HOP? That man is capable of outpointing a grenade thrown at him by hitting it, deflecting the shrapnel, and dodging the explosion from a foot away. HA! This fight should be interesting.
Thursday Aug 7, 2008
Rocky from Ohio:  Listen, Hopkins WAS a great fighter. But he needs to take a step back and take a look at Kelly. Kelly is like a surgeon in the ring. He made mince meat outta Taylor, Miranda etc.etc. everyon Kelly fights...he destroys them. Kelly is very fast, very accurate and very hungry. Hopkins is making $$$money$$$ so he can retire and he owes alot to Kelly for even taking this fight. My prediction....Pavlik over Hopkins 4th round KO....he's gonna feel a little sorry for the old man the first couple rounds..then LIGHTS OUT....TIME FOR THE GHOST !!!!
Thursday Aug 7, 2008
aaron, uk:  you've got more chances of finding a bride in a brothel than seeing B-HOP knocked out!! FACT.
Thursday Aug 7, 2008
Terrance:  Its goodnight Hopkins, enjoy the money.
Saturday Aug 9, 2008
Isaiah:  Must-get-in-last-word... 50/50 fight. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Sunday Aug 10, 2008
jim:  kelly should go to the body and when hopkins comes in with hes head upper cut him 8-10 round stoppage hopkins age will catch up on him

Playing Matchmaker: Williams/Cotto, Pavlik/Abraham Winners Meet
"I wouldn't mind paying 50 dollars for a Paul Williams /Miguel Cotto fight with Margarito/Clottey in the undercard. Or Jermain Taylor/Paul Williams with a fight between Kelly Pavlik/Arthur Abraham on the same night. A set up like that would be good for boxing 'cause the fans would see four good fighters in one night and possibly see the two winners fight in the near future.Too bad boxing doesn't think about the fans the way fans think about boxing." ---TSS reader Arturo plays matchmaker
