NSAC Clears Margarito; More Clottey-Judah

By David A. Avila

Rumors had been floating for the last six days that new WBA welterweight king Antonio Margarito may have beaten Puerto Rico’s Miguel Cotto because of steroid use or some other supplement.

Most of the accusations, though never supported officially were emanating mostly from Puerto Rico and spreading among Spanish language publications since last Saturday’s win by Tijuana’s Margarito.

Now those rumors have been squashed.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission announced officially Friday that Margarito’s drug tests returned negative. He was not on steroids or any drugs whatsoever after stopping Cotto in the 11th round last Saturday.

“We knew he wasn’t on steroids, we just wanted the Commission to say it and they did today,” said Sergio Diaz, co-manager of Margarito. “It was bothering us that anybody would say anything like that.”

Margarito is currently in Tijuana, Mexico where he was going to receive an award from the city mayor today.

Diaz said they are going to investigate to see if any of the radio stations or newspapers were printing false accusations. If so, those media publications could be sued for libel or slander.

“We’re going to look into it,” Diaz said.

But now the Tijuana Tornado is the king of the welterweights, having taken Kermit Cintron’s IBF welterweight title and now Cotto’s WBA title. All that remains is WBC titleholder Andre Berto and hopefully a rematch with WBO titleholder Paul Williams, who captured a decision against Margarito a year ago.

Williams is having a press conference next Tuesday in Los Angeles.

Talks of having a welterweight free for all are beginning to heat up.

Judah-Clottey

When Brooklyn’s quicksilver Zab Judah steps in the ring against the crushing style of Joshua Clottey on Saturday, it marks the beginning of a ticking welterweight time bomb that’s the brainchild of Top Rank’s Bob Arum.

The super fast Judah returns to the fight against welterweight slugger Joshua Clottey (34-2, 20 KOs) on Aug. 2, at the Palm Casino in Las Vegas. The fight will be televised on HBO.

“This fight is for my fans,” said Judah (36-5, 25 KOs).

Judah claims his experience is a major factor in any big match and will be against Ghana’s super tough Clottey.

“He’s a very strong boxer, but in the game of boxing when you have the lights and camera on you, it’s a different type of fight. I’ve been through this,” said Judah, who has been residing in Las Vegas since he was training for the Shane Mosley fight that was canceled due to an injury the New Yorker suffered. “I know the difference.”

Both know each other from their days of training at Gleason’s Gym. Once or twice Judah asked Clottey to spar, but the African fighter declined because he wanted to fight the Brooklyn southpaw, not spar.

“He wanted to fight me on the streets,” said Clottey, who used to train at Gleason’s Gym where Judah formerly trained. “So I left the gym. He knew a lot of guys there and he lives in Brooklyn.”

Now Clottey’s plan to fight, not spar, is about to blossom into reality.

“I’ll beat him because we’re going to fight an in close fight,” says Clottey, who is originally from Ghana. “If he moves, I’ll move, if he runs, I’ll run. I’m not going to let him run.”

Clottey, 31, was forced to take a hard road to the top because of his physically intimidating style. A victory over Colombia’s Richard Gutierrez that was televised on Showtime prompted a world title match up against Mexico’s Antonio Margarito. Though he didn’t win he was impressive enough.

“They gave me the chance to fight Margarito. They didn’t think I would do well,” said Clottey, who lost by unanimous decision. “If Zab beats me, he can beat (Miguel) Cotto or Margarito. If he can beat me.”

“He will never beat me,” Clottey added.

Two New Yorkers face each other next Saturday. Who will be the more resilient?

Tournament

Top Rank’s Bob Arum said he wants to gather all of the welterweights including Saturday’s winner between Judah and Clottey and hold a welterweight tournament.

Arum said in the 1980s it was the welterweights who captivated the boxing world with all of them fighting each other. There was Sugar Ray Leonard, Wilfredo Benitez, Carlos Palomino, Armando Muniz, Tommy Hearns, Pipino Cuevas and of course Roberto Duran, who electrified boxing fans by clashing with each other.

Arum said that the winner of Sugar Shane Mosley and Ricardo Mayorga could meet Saturday’s winner or even Margarito.

“The welterweights have always been an exciting division,” said Arum

Under card

Two fights that won’t be shown on HBO will be included on the fight card on Saturday Aug. 2 from the Palms Casino when Anthony Peterson (27-0, 19 KOs) faces former world champion Javier Jauregui (53-14-2, 36 KOs) in a 10-round contest; and former world champion Brian Viloria (22-2, 13 KOs) against Antonio Cochero Diaz (9-9) for eight rounds.

Peterson has quick hands and good defense but has the annoying tactic of holding after he throws a combination or if a fighter gets too close. He kind of reminds me of a smaller version of former heavyweight champion John Ruiz. In fact his brother Lamont Peterson also employs the same hugging technique. If both Petersons want to create boredom that’s a surefire technique.

Jauregui has an awkward style and a great chin. He’s fought some of the best lightweights in the world and despite being 11 years older than Peterson, he could be too experienced for the very athletic youngster.

In the flyweight contest, Viloria returns to the ring but this time as a 112-pound flyweight. He’s working out of Oxnard now.

Also on the fight card is Riverside’s Michael Franco, a hard-hitting bantamweight with power in both fists. He faces Felix Flores of Colombia in a six round fight. Franco is a raw talent but very strong and very tall for the 118-pound division.

Congratulations to Antonio Diaz

After a three-year absence Coachella’s Antonio Diaz returned to the ring last Friday and captured a majority decision against veteran Felix Flores in Florida last Friday.

Diaz, a former IBA welterweight titleholder, had been providing sparring for both his brother Julio Diaz and Timothy Bradley. He’s returning as a welterweight.

FLOYD MAYWEATHER IS THE LEGEND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:  I heard those steroid rumors came from a Puerto Rican Radio Station HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Talking about EXCUSES HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You heard and read that haters?: N E G A T I V E. Margarito is just BETTER than Cotto. Go cry to mom.
Saturday Aug 2, 2008
Giovanni Monzon:  Putting in Armando Muniz in a category with Sugar Ray Leonard and Thomas Hearns and Wilfred Benitez is a little ridiculous. Even putting in Palomino with those guys is ridiculous. But more understandable.
Saturday Aug 2, 2008
BigDaddy:  Margarito doesn't need Panama Lewis.
Saturday Aug 2, 2008
ben oconnor:  its alarming that judah says the difference against clottey will be experience, and not his boxing ability, i feel judah needs 100% concentration to beat clottey. i really hope judah can perform and throw shots and let his hands go. didnt get his shots off against cotto and was waiting too long. if he does and his conditioning is bang on then he can win. love watching judah when he is on song, great style, feet hands, movement, speed. just want to see it against a decent fighter like clottey. wanna see him repeat the first round against tszyu! class boxing! come on zab!
Saturday Aug 2, 2008
elmore:  judah is still among the best p4p handsdown he shoul blow out clottey inside of 5 rounds in a mastery performance just hope he wins by ko so he can knock margo tfo
Saturday Aug 2, 2008
LCambridge:  Arum is right. They were contenders some became champ some, such as Muniz, never did. Palomino was the linear champ because he won the title from England's John Stracey who won it previously from seven years reigning great Jose Napoles. Yes, these welterweights contenders and champs went at each other until the best was found... Sugar Ray Leonard. Duran and Hearns went on to win other titles.
Saturday Aug 2, 2008
donputo69:  i heard that rumor came from scareweather's camp....rumors has it scareweather was coming out or retirement and face margarito...but SCAREWEATHER'S CAMP was told to check margarito's blood samples too see if margarito was on steroids...it came out negative...now scareweather is REALLY NOT COMING BACK....lmfaoooooooo...THATS JUST A RUMOR...but rumor or not, that quitter scareweather is not coming back....holla back ladies!!!!!!
Saturday Aug 2, 2008
Radam G:  This roid nonsense and the "little black bottle" stuff are legendary and mythical in the hurt business. Those who never been in the hurt square find it very hard to believe in a performance like the job Margarito did on Cotto. Face the facts and move on, it was Margarito Time. Maybe Cotto will get it together, i.e., Joe Louis-Max Scheming or Sugar Ray Leonard-Roberto Duran or Williams-Quintana, and do a short-order job on Margarito in a rematch. However, there are rumors floating around that Cotto has turned into cotton and punked out of a rematch. Holla!
Saturday Aug 2, 2008
donputo69:  yo radam?...are you starting more rumors?...COTTO WILL BE BACK.....and there's a rumor floating around that scareweather is going to become a boxing referee....thats just a rumor.....holla back!!!!!
Saturday Aug 2, 2008
Coco:  I know Puerto Ricans feel hurt for the montage HBO showed of the destruction of Cotto and his family crying, but please don't start rumors. I hope that the negative results proves to all the whinners that Margarito was simply better. By the way, he didn't use low blows... wink, wink.
Saturday Aug 2, 2008
Eastar:  I'm going to watch Cotto get beat down ( again ) in a few...Shhhhhhhhhh!
Saturday Aug 2, 2008
ben oconnor:  head butt guys?

FLOYD MAYWEATHER IS THE LEGEND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!: :  People of TSS, read this. This is incredibly unbelievable that is coming from me, but it's the Truth. I just saw the Cotto-Margarito fight again. And I'm saying this with open heart : Antonio Margarito will beat Floyd Mayweather Jr IF they ever get in a ring, and I'll explain: I just saw the fight and yes, Cotto was landing flush and clean punches. Even as if Margarito came foward, it was Cotto getting himself into his own downfall. Throwing punches against Margarito, hits you, but not in the face. It hits you in your lungs, your muscles, and your heart. He can take punches and he can push the pressure pace harder, and harder. Those pounds of Margarito's pushing on you will take away from you in such way, that it takes your stamina, your strenght and your will and the only key to fend it off is moving away. Now, we all know Floyd moves away very well, but is exactly what happened in the Jose Luis Castillo fight. A Margarito fight for Floyd, will be a Castillo deadly de-ja-vú. We ALL know Floyd lost that first fight and even a guy like me knows it. Margarito's far superior than Castillo, not because he's heaver, not because he's stronger, but because he's more resistant, more aggresive (Yes, even more than Castillo), and most of all: HE NEVER GIVES UP. Unfortunte for me and the FEW Floyd fans inthis World, I really see this coming with no surprise: ANTONIO MARGARITO WILL DEFEAT FLOYD MAYWEATHER JR. Man, I can't BELIEVE I'm saying this, but it's the Truth.........................And just in case this IS the real FLOYD MAYWEATHER IS THE LEGEND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Saturday Aug 2, 2008
donputo69:  im gonna watch scareweather lose to castillo...shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!...how you like that easter rotten-egg?..lmfaoooooo......holla back!!!!!
Saturday Aug 2, 2008
Eastar:  As I said, Zab "Super" doodoo is finished. He was never the same after losing to Floyd Money. Margarito needs to finish Clotty off once and for all...Or remat Paul Will because Oscar is avoiding Margs.
Saturday Aug 2, 2008
donputo69:  are you on crack scareweather not so legend?....its always good to have a change of hearts once in a while..lmfaoooooo...everybody knows that scareweather will lose to any top welterweights out there..heck...even collazo will beat that bum scareweather...lmfaooooo....holla back ladies...

BIGFREDO76:  I know Cotto fans took a ripping but this is plain B.S.This is the pussyfication of boxing even if its not true are they that pissed that the stones cotto threw hit a brick chin?Cotto lost and got his face rearranged and his insides.Cotto i guarantee will not fight for at least one year.He needs to take his time and find the right opponent so he look good again ala trinidad.
Sunday Aug 3, 2008
BIGFREDO76:  Hey Mr. Avila Margarito didnt take anything from anybody he beat the snot and spilled their blood. If this wasnt a sport it would be assault and battery. But Margarito has to go thru this because hes beaten two boricuas and thats suspicious they running out of brawlers.
Sunday Aug 3, 2008
arberto:  Margarito will not last long as a champion. he do not have the boxing abilities to do that, by the way his figths are boring, the reason so many people saw this fight was because Miguel Cotto. many people want to see the real champion, miguel again. margarito do not have that appear to boxing fans. just look when margarito fight again, that is why Oscar do not want to fight him, nobody will pay to see margarito. the only fight margarito will atract people is when he fight cotto again, and is going to be because of Miguel, not him.
Sunday Aug 3, 2008
Eastar:  Upon further inspection, I can honestly say that Quitto did not win one round.! He was running to the ropes throwing ineffective combinations that wouldn't hurt a Pinoy, let alone a real fighter, lol. The media had Cotto thinking he can really "box" lmao. The joke's on him though. Maybe he'll fire his uncle, and get Mayweather Sr to show him how to perform the sweet science. Ya dig???
Sunday Aug 3, 2008
Isaiah:  Wow! That was crazy! FLOYD MAYWEATHER IS THE LEGEND admitting someone can beat Floyd?!! THE TRUTH IS HERE!!! DON'T FIGHT IT!!! Margarito is the freakin terminator! Cotto can punch, best believe that. It didn't matter. Margarito will absorb everything you have, walk over you and punish you until you can't stand it anymore Floyd! The real Floyd Mayweather Jr. that is. If he ever comes to this website and reads any comments, here's a little message, MAN UP FLOYD!!! You owe to all the fans to fight Margartio. THE TIME HAS COME!!! Max Kellerman knows it and all the fans know it to! Rambo quote: Live for something or die for nothing. Here's a funny fact you all. Floyd's dad Floyd Sr. thought Oscar de la Hoya won the fight against Floyd Jr. If your own dad thinks you lost a fight, then maybe Mayweather isn't as great as he seems to alot of people. Maybe deep inside some of you in denial, you know the truth is Welterweight, the best division in boxing, was one weight class up too many for Floyd. Are you some of you scared just how real the possibility of Floyd losing is now? It's more then ever. Way more then ever before.
Monday Aug 4, 2008
Isaiah:  Margarito will cut off the ring as well as Castillo did in the first Mayweather fight, but for one difference, Mayweather won't be able to keep him off of him. The well known approach to beat Mayweather will finally happen. Mayweather will try to repeat Paul William's close win, but this time it won't happen. HA,HA,HA. Mayweather fans, how do you stop a tornado? YOU DONT!!!
Monday Aug 4, 2008
Isaiah:  Sorry, I got the Rambo quote reversed earlier. I guess I'm too excited thinking about the beatdown Margarito would give Mayweather. Alright, somebody else say something.
Monday Aug 4, 2008
Eastar:  Nah, Mar-Burrito will never get to fight Floyd Money because he's going to get knocked the F' out by Pual Williams,ASAP, lolololol. After that he can hang out with Miguel quitto and Zab Judah in the "losers" section of the WWD, Haha. Ya dig?
Monday Aug 4, 2008
Anony:  FLOYD MAYWEATHER IS THE LEGEND::::: Remember I told you once you see Cotto-Margarito's fight you were going to change your mind by yourself. REMEMBER????? The only thing you need to add up (after watching the replay) is that Cotto too can crush Mayweather as well. Did you happen to see those blows he threw to Margarito??? or did you see them well??? I'm sure Margarito is not saying it but those blows were humonguos. He might have a granite chin but even granite brakes.... and it will brake believe me. The only thing missing from that fight was Miguel Cotto hitting the body and stay out of the ropes. AND PEOPLE PLEASE ADMIT that Cotto could have won the fight if round 11 and 12 were granted to him. He just needed to find a way to slow down Margarito or frustate him. I know it din't happened like that but if you put it round by round, the fight was even until the 11th. In a rematch I will bet on Cotto by unanimous decision. . FMITL : your eyes have been opened, thanks to me. Admit it. I love to help fellow boxing fans find the truth hehehehe PD - when r you changing your name? Why don't you call yourself "Floyd Mayweather WISH to be a legend"... without fighting the best, of course, as everyone knows.
Monday Aug 4, 2008
Aaron:  I think Oscar is setting up all up, for a triumphant return by smashing Margarito. Oscar still has the moves and the speed, we say what he did to Vargas, Oscar will put away a bruiser like Margarito in about 8 rounds. After that, I see some unifying going on, as he takes out Clottey, Paul Williams, and Andre Berto. Then it's on to some vengeance as Oscar beats Mosley and Pretty Boy Floyd, in a super mega-rematch that Oscar will dominate before he rides off into the sunset!
Monday Aug 4, 2008
Saul:  Arberto, that is the stupidest comment i've read on here in a really long time. You can't seriously believe that, not even coming from yourself. Oscar doesn't wanna fight Margarito because he knows he will more than likely lose, also, Oscar gave some crap excuse about not wanting to fight another Mexican on his last fight. Guess what, Cotto is NOT the real champion anymore, but you know who is? sure you do, c'mon say it, say it, that's right the man who whooped Cotto's @$$, Antonio Margarito. If Cotto ever decides he wants a rematch people will watch it because it will be another classic battle between two outstanding fighter, not just because of Cotto. Besides, Cotto quit, he probably wont even bother with a rematch. NUF SAID.
Monday Aug 4, 2008
Joe:  Was the rumor sterioids or Human Growth Hormone (HGH)? I do not think there are any test that can identify it in the body. The way he fought was almost too good to be true. HGH makes recovery faster and a fighter can have longer, almost unhuman endurance..sually in sports when it is too good to be true it is usually not. If he is clean, then Margarito is a beast!! The way sports are today, people have a right to question things nowadays.
Monday Aug 4, 2008
machuco:  hey big fred margo have defeated two boricuas but we have more wins in our rivalries. also they fought in las vegas, mexico. lets see the fight in madison square garden. i guess you didnt see margo face the following day.
Monday Aug 4, 2008
BIGFREDO76:  me los Machucas im glad you pointed out the fact that there is home field advantage.I said that if Cotto left the nest "MSG"or "AC" he would get his face rearranged and it did.Im pretty sure if Margo fought in NY it would have been tougher but the same result but it did play a role. But why the crying?Cotto should have stood his ground and never left NY but more money in Vegas and money blinds you then Tornadoes rip you.So about the rivalry so what Cotto wont fight for a while and mexicans still producing boxers like theres no tomorrow.

Playing Matchmaker: Williams/Cotto, Pavlik/Abraham Winners Meet
"I wouldn't mind paying 50 dollars for a Paul Williams /Miguel Cotto fight with Margarito/Clottey in the undercard. Or Jermain Taylor/Paul Williams with a fight between Kelly Pavlik/Arthur Abraham on the same night. A set up like that would be good for boxing 'cause the fans would see four good fighters in one night and possibly see the two winners fight in the near future.Too bad boxing doesn't think about the fans the way fans think about boxing." ---TSS reader Arturo plays matchmaker
