Chewing More On Margarito/De La Hoya
By John Nguyen
Oscar De La Hoya just can't seem to catch a break these days.
For a fighter who always had opponents lining up around the block to fight him, he can't manage to secure an opponent for his next, and theoretically final, fight.
The plan was initially to fight twice more, with the first bout against pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather in a rematch of their 2007 blockbuster. Though a sequel to their relatively non-violent first affair received only a tepid response from hardcore fans, it was sure to be another box office bonanza. At least until Mayweather decided to retire, leaving Plan A dead in the water for De La Hoya.
The De La Hoya braintrust regrouped, and instead of a two-fight farewell tour, Oscar would opt for a December swan song before applying for his AARP membership. The frontrunner seemed to be Miguel Cotto, provided he could get past Antonio Margarito.
So much for Plan B.
The question now is whether Antonio Margarito becomes the next man in line by default, after conquering Cotto. Even prior to the Cotto bout, Margarito's name was brought up by fans and writers as an intriguing match for De La Hoya. As recently as this past weekend, Bob Arum, Margarito's promoter, indicated that De La Hoya was not interested in a matchup with Margarito.
“If Margarito wins, Oscar won't fight him. He won't fight another Mexican in his last fight,” Arum commented to the Los Angeles Times prior to Saturday night's big fight.
Always aware of his public image, Arum acknowledged De La Hoya's reluctance to take on a fighter who will cause division within his fan base, especially in his final fight. It probably wouldn't be as bad as when De La Hoya twice defeated Julio Cesar Chavez, but it would be easy to see red-blooded Mexican fight fans would rally behind their countryman in Margarito, particularly since he embodies the qualities of the classic Mexican warrior.
The cynics will likely view this as a front, as smoke and mirrors to cloud the fact that De La Hoya is reluctant to fight the grueling war that is inevitable when facing Margarito. For his most recent fights, De La Hoya has chosen foes who would present tactical rather than physical warfare.
The last bout in which De La Hoya faced such a purely physical fight took place in 2002, when he faced Fernando Vargas. During significant stretches of the fight, Vargas mauled De La Hoya, forcing him against the ropes while scoring effectively before succumbing to De La Hoya's better technique late in the fight. How much of Vargas' success was due to his own ability rather than the performance enhancing substances for which he later tested positive is debatable, but De La Hoya was clearly uncomfortable with the rough and tumble tactics Vargas employed.
Fast-forward six years. Now at age 35, is De La Hoya still physically equipped to handle the relentless onslaught of a fighter like Margarito? Though Margarito is naturally smaller than Vargas, who was a big junior middleweight, the Tijuana Tornado is more of a pure brawler, which could potentially cause more problems for De La Hoya.
What makes the matchup even more interesting, and potentially even more marketable, is Margarito's well-known tenure as a former De La Hoya sparring partner. Recalling his time in the De La Hoya camp, Margarito hints that he may have been a little too fiery for the liking of De La Hoya's handlers: “On two different occasions, I made him bleed. Once from the nose, and the other time from the ear. Unfortunately, both times they sent me back down.”
Boxing insiders know that gym stories are to be taken with a grain of salt, but Margarito's showing against Cotto demonstrated that he would pose a very real threat to De La Hoya's heroic exit from the sport. Margarito also proved that he is the most relevant opponent for De La Hoya, a point he made made immediately after vanquishing Cotto.
“Oscar De La Hoya is one of the best. We can give Mexicans a true battle,” a tired but triumphant Margarito stated shortly after the biggest moment of his professional career.
Sounds like Margarito is on board.
Will Oscar De La Hoya, who has never been one to duck a challenge, be willing to take on one of the biggest challenges in the closing chapter of his storybook career? The stage has been set for the sport's greatest hero to make his departure in true Hollywood style. The question is, will he be willing to face a man in Antonio Margarito who has proven able to make extensive re-writes even to the most thoughtful scripts? A victory for De La Hoya would put an exclamation point on his Hall of Fame career, but a loss puts his legacy, not to mention his health, at risk.
Looks like The Golden Boy has a tough decision to make.

De La Hoya can't win...either way. If he doesn't fight Margarito, everyone will know that De La Hoya does not fight everyone. If De La Hoya does fight Margarito, Margarito will win the fight. De La Hoya took advantage of a aging Chavez; he needs to return the favor to a younger Margarito. At least if De La Hoya fights Margarito, no one can say he ducked anyone and I think that people will remember that fact more so than whether De La Hoya wins the fight or not.

Hey John I have a question? Do you still go to KSU? Anyway back to the topic at hand. I know that DLH really had hopes to fight Miguel Cotto, but with that out of the question he really doesn't have any other significant fights left at WW other than Margarito, or PacMan. I think that if Forbes could get to DLH than PacMan and Margarito will definetly lump him up, but I give DLH a better chance against Pacquiao because of the size factor. I don't pick DLH in either one of those matchups so I say he should just fight Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and give the young man a chance at revenge!!!!

I can't take the credit for this because I've heard it before but can't Margarito fight Sergio Mora for the 154lb strap? That would be entertaining and fun to watch not to mention help secure Margarito's legacy if he wins. I've seen the sparring sessions between them before and that will be an interesting matchup! Make it now!!!!!!!

It seems like Margarito's towering victory over Miguel Cotto still has people in the boxing world "shook up". I bet Oscar doesn't even know what to do right now. What a great move by Bob Arum!!!

De la Hoya is a great fighter. I don't take that away from him, but he would've been even better if he dedicated more than business. Yes, I believe he can beat Margarito is they fight. Is still kind of early for me to pick either of them, but I believe De la Hoya can defeat Tony Margarito. If he fights lil Asian kid, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's be a circus

Why is it ok for Margarito to fight ODH and not PBF, I guess Tono is scared to fight PAUL, the real W/W champ or PBF p4p NO.1

I still wish Oscar would retire like a man with nothing to prove (unlike that other recent retiree TSS mentions too much). But if Oscar must fight again, and it appears he must, then this is a win-win situation for all Mexican fans and all fight fans. You know there'll be action and no dancing. Margarito's only edge is youth, though it could be a big one. What's this "towering victory"? So Margarito won one big fight. Big whup. Who elected him God? Oscar is a tremendous boxer and has handled plenty of brawlers and volume punchers. Oscar did well against Mayweather(sorry) and would have done even better if he hadn't forgetten his jab. Yeah, he was lazy with Forbes. But I think he was just coasting too much for his own good. Freddie Roach is wise and who am I to contradict him? But I think Oscar could pull the plug one more time. 35 is old, but it ain't dead. He can box Margarito as good as Cotto did. And if Oscar gets tired before getting the job done, it could get just as ugly. But I can't see Oscar ending it on his knee. He's always been a proud classy warrior who stood his ground. Either way, it would be a great fight and a great night for all fight fans.

DLH could save face by challenging Pavlik for the Middleweight crown. If he wins, he goes out golden. If he loses he'll have lost to a bigger man and he can sign Pavlik to his promotional company. Would be an interesting fight.

no way de la hoya will beat margarito..6 years ago?...yes...now?..NO...de la hoya is better off fighting the real P4P king pacquiao...but to be honest?...in my opinion?..de la hoya should fight trinidad..thats just my opinion..make it a catch weight at 158...im sure trinidad will go down and de la hoya will move up...just remember 1999...de la hoya's first lose...this fight should be the last fight for both..thats just my opinion...holla back ladies!!!!

Its not impossible for DLH to pick up a hard fought victory. Hes by far the better boxer and he also is extremely durable like Margarito ( not quite as durable as Margarito ) and the reason I think he would do a better job than Miguel is that inner steel that so few boxers have and he is one of the ones who has. Having said all this I agree with the gang that Antonio goes off favourite...

I think that Pac-Man vs. DLH would be a farce. But, the writers and Boxing fans who are trying to say that DLH is afraid of Margarito,or anyone else, are full of crap.Oscar has never ducked anyone.Thankfully for Boxing,he almost always goes for the biggest fight out there regardless of who it is.I wish more Boxers followed his example.

De La Joya can beat Margarito if he is committed to sticking and moving for 12 rounds, ala Hector Camacho. Cotto stoped circling, and began fighting in reverse and against the ropes which is what got him in trouble. Toe to toe, there is no better fighter than Margarito. I have never seen a fighter walk through crisp hard shots like the way he did vs Cotto. Margarito can only lose if a boxer is committed to win on points by circling the entire 12 rounds.

He ducked Winky and Forrest and straight refused to fight Margarito. If he's so concerned about how the Mexicans will feel, he should make a poll and ask them. A fight with Pac is a joke. Margarito will make him quit just like Hopkins did.

DeLa Hoya is that boxer that can pull off the upset on Margarito. He has speed and power, and he can knock you out in the late rounds. Sure, it will be bloody, but Marg will give Oscar just enough opennings to finish the job. Espesially if Floyd Sr has him using the jab fluidly.

De La Hoya can barely stand up in the late rounds these days - let alone knock 'em out. He can't stop Tony - forget what he took from Cotto, anyone who saw Cintron explode neutron bombs on his jaw with absolutely zero effect must know that and when it gets into the last third of the fight, he's finished. He had nothing left against PBF in the last third and he didn't exactly make Oscar work hard before that - imagine the pace Tony will set and maintain. He would savage De La Hoya late.

The REAL Salt lover:

To the TSS personnel, the "Salt lover" that you've put on the Note of the Quote is NOT the REAL Salt lover. That was a clown who doesn't have the GUTS to show himself. A copycat. A wannabe. I would never say that about Oscar. Yes, Oscar is not the same as he was a decade ago, but he can fight and he's got skills. And this is hard to believe, but he can beat both Margarito and Pacquiao. If he can box and use his ring intelligence, he'd beat Margarito, and he would also defeat Pacquiao. Please take that quote out, because it was made from someone who loves my name and doesn't write with his own.

Why would de la Hoya have to fight at 147? He's the cash cow of boxing if you overlook prime Mike Tyson. De la Hoya versus Margarito could easily be made at 154. If Mayweather who started as a Junior Lightweight can reach 150 to fight de la Hoya, then an oversized Welterweight like Margarito should have no problem fighting at this weight especially for a career high payday. Being a de la Hoya fan since the mid to late nineties, I want to pick Oscar for the upset. Oscar and Margarito are both very good fighters, but overall careers at this point, Oscar is slightly closer to great and it should be a bloody, close desicion in which Margarito edges it just because he's more in his prime and will probaly not be able to get really hurt.

De La Hoya cant save face for 2 reasons, he isnt a full time boxer anymore and he's just in it for the $$ money now. Its a business to Oscar, not a sport.

Margarito is dangerous as heck for Big Money O. Big George Foreman was dangerous as heck for "The Greatest" Muhammad Ali. Everybody and his momma are always telling the greats that they "can't win." Well, Ali beat Big George in the "Rumble in the Jungle." And Big Money O maybe can take the deadly twisting winds out of a Tijuana Tornado in Cali or Vegas. Big Money O will take a risk and handle that Tijuana Tornado. Yep! Margarito has won one OSCAR Award that he may just regret. I predict that The Golden Boy goes down in history beating up Margarito and shocking the critics, reminiscent of Ali shutting them up about Foreman. These Cali-born Mexicans will get it on, and this will be the fight of the year and the upset of the year and decade. Holla!

For some Reason Margarito did not obtain all the respect well deserve from beating up Cotto and not only He won that fight cutting the ring and trowing amazing combinations to head and body He took Cotto to the limits and then he went further and showing a "I cant take it no more" Cotto went down on his knee Cotto's body was broken down as well as his spirit, now lets remember most people said Margarito will loose the fight now again he prove them wrong, same people now think that de la Hoya will win a fight bet them GUys please de la Hoya stands no chance why because he is another Mexican he will not fight like PBF just running aroun the ring giving us the fans a boring show, no the la Hoya will get into the fight he s going to get hit by Margarito and he's going to try like a good Mexican fighter to go toe to toe with Margarito and at a very high cost the newspapers will say Farewell fight of Oscar de la Hoya went sour with another stuning Victory from the Tijuana Tornado knocking the Hoya out in the seventh Round. Margarito should fight Paul Williams and then if PBF comes back they should fight Maywhether is a great defensive fighter but he will not be able to keep off Margarito's relentless attack.

Well this would be a great match up. About The Golden Boy ducking Margarito...I don't think so, i believe he's capable of beating Margarito either by decision or maybe even by knock out in the later rounds. De la Hoya has been a legen on the sport since he started and i don't know why people front on him? Anyways it would definateley be a great fight but i would have my heart on the Golden Boy. I have to disagree about Oscar doing this for the $ only because he has showed that he's a true fighter and loves the sport, and we all know he's close to a billion dollars! So yes he's a very smart man with a great business mentality but you have admit he's a great technician on that ring. As we all know, everybody and their mother (literally!!!) go see him fight. And i would like him to retire after his last fight no matter who he fights cause he has nothing else to prove. That punk Mayweather retired cause he knew what was coming. I didn't even think Mayweather won that fight anyways. :O) Stay up people.

LIsten up De La Hoya fans, I like De la hoya too, but to make a fantasy that De la Hoya can keep up with the CRAZY STAMINA and Steel jaw of Margarito is foolish! Look, I've been watching De La Hoya since he won Golden gloves and the olympics and I am a hard core fan of De la hoya but I can't see a De la hoya victory regardless of my bias! I can't be in denial that after the 6th or 7th round De la hoya would get smashed and smashed in a brutal fashion! I think he is an awsome fighter and I am not a hater. I believe the pressure of the fans and criticism will ultimately make the fight between Margarito and De La Hoya! Knowing about Oscars pride in himself and his legacy, The fight between Oscar and Margarito will be made Watch!

I agree that delahoya is a great fighter, the best p4p at one point in his career but I think he should stick with the pacman so he doesn't get hurt by Margarito . On another note I believe Margarito is the best welterweight in the world right now period! Why do people keep saying P.williams is the best because he beat Margarito to a close decision and I mean really close. Paul williams also lost to Quitana cmon the best fighter give me a break. So paul williams should face Margarito again and Margarito should do what he did to Cotto to williams so he can put an exclamtion point to all the doubters . Margarito is in his prime and after williams he should fight PBFM and end his career.

Oscar had trained with Mayweather Sr for many years. To change trainers for the most important fight of his career, was not smart. Considering this however, Delahoya still did an excellent job. For the rematch, Mayweather Jr. retired in that this time Oscar wasn't gonna change trainers. Mayweather Jr. feared he would lose the rematch. What were his alternatives? Cotto and Margarito - Oops! He'd make a mistake to take on either. I don't blame him for retiring.

This author's article is extremely narrow minded and biased. De La Hoya is over rated as a boxer. Yes he has had concrete wins in his boxing career but several of the decisions on his fights have been incredibly trivial. He has lost the "true love for the sport of boxing". He gets money for fighting and promotion. He came out in his fight against Pacquiao with nothing to truly honor his name as a great boxer. However, now his dignity as a boxer dwindles as his pockets increase. Realistically he should have retired several fights ago because his current actions reflects the ambition for money not the record of a true champion

Not Hip To The Hype
"Haye has said that without the hype, boxing is boring. This tells you something about him as a fighter and as a man. And maybe something about his low expectations of his own value as a fighter. Why isn't his skill good enough? Which audience is he trying to impress? When I watch fights, I watch the contest, the skill, the drama, the match-up. Screw the circus hype."---TSS reader Mortcola, giving thumbs down on David Haye and his pre-fight antics
