Steward: Margarito Too Dangerous For Oscar

By David A. Avila

Antonio Margarito can’t box. The Tijuana Tornado has no defense. Those were some of the reasons many fans felt the Mexican welterweight would have no chance against Puerto Rico’s Miguel Cotto.

Now everyone outside of California and the wild border town of Tijuana understand why many of the elite welterweights avoided Margarito like a tainted bushel of jalapeno chiles.

After years of boxing fans and experts decrying Margarito’s boxing style and lack of defensive skill, finally the rest of the country along with the rest of the world now understand why Californians felt all along the Tijuana Tornado would beat Puerto Rico’s talented Miguel Cotto.

Only those who ventured into the L.A. Boxing Club behind the Olympic Auditorium, or the Maywood Boxing Club in the middle of the industrial town, or the air-conditioned boxing gym in South El Monte, and finally the steamy one story Montebello PAL gym where Margarito prepared endless hours sparring against the likes of Sebastian Lujan, Alfredo Angulo, Jesus Soto-Karass and many others in preparation for his showdown with the respected Cotto.

The few boxing writers that ventured in those gyms over the years got a clear understanding of Margarito’s ability and his almost abnormal stamina that allows him to climb the steep hills of Griffith Park and other locations.

Time to turn the page to chapter two.

Now, at the peak of his power, it would seem the next logical step would be a match with the ivory tower of boxing Oscar De La Hoya. Or not.

Most experts believe that Margarito’s chances of meeting East L.A.’s De La Hoya are remote. More than a few say that Manny Pacquiao, not Margarito, will be the Golden Boy’s last opponent.

Top Rank’s Bob Arum, who promotes both Margarito and Cotto and formerly promoted De La Hoya, said he received a phone call a few weeks ago from Golden Boy Promotion’s CEO Richard Schaefer about setting up a match with the winner of Cotto-Margarito. Both Arum and Schaefer were hoping for Cotto.

“If Margarito wins there is no chance because Oscar doesn’t want to go out fighting another Mexican. Is that real or true? That’s what he told me so I go to take it at face value,” said Arum on Saturday before the Cotto-Margarito match.

Now with Cotto out of contention, the pendulum points to the diminutive Pacquiao.

Many boxing experts view that fight as a mismatch, despite Paquiao’s recent success over junior lightweights like Marco Antonio Barrera and lightweights like David Diaz; experts see De La Hoya’s size advantage as too much for even the speedy Filipino to overcome.

“I wouldn’t pick Manny Pacquiao to win especially with the size disadvantage,” said boxing columnist Robert Morales from the Long Beach Press-Telegram. “He’ll (Pacquiao) have the same problem Cotto had last night against Margarito…I just don’t think he can hurt Oscar.”

Emanuel Steward, the famed trainer of Tommy Hearns, Wladimir Klitschko and Kermit Cintron, says he would rather De La Hoya face Margarito, but doesn’t think it will happen.

“I don’t think Oscar will ever take it, he (Margarito) is too tough,” said Steward who also works as an analyst for HBO. “It would be the biggest fight that Oscar could make because Margarito is so hot right now.”

Though Steward views a Pacquiao-De La Hoya match doing big numbers in the box office and on pay-per-views, he doesn’t like the size disparity.

“The fight can be made because it involves someone who’s considered the best fighter pound for pound,” said Steward via telephone. “We just saw that size makes a difference when Margarito fought Cotto. Especially when you’re talking about an elite welterweight, not just any fighter.”

Tony Rivera, a cut man to many legendary boxers, said the best fight would be between Margarito and De La Hoya, but he also understands that money dictates matchups in prizefighting.

“It’s a money fight for those guys but I hate to see such a little guy fight a big guy. Manny wants it because there's a lot of money for those guys, but all the work he’s done will go out the window after a tremendous loss against Oscar,” says Rivera who worked for Roberto Duran, Alexis Arguello and Marco Antonio Barrera. “Manny can only do so much. After that, you’re asking for him to take a horrible beating. Everything will go right out the window for the sake of money.”

Morales feels the same about the proposed match between De La Hoya and Pacquiao.

“Oscar could fight his sister and he’d get huge pay-per-view buys,” said Morales, who has covered boxing for more than 15 years. “At different parts of his career he’s been criticized for fighting guys smaller than him. How are they going to react when he’s fighting someone who never fought at more than 135 pounds? Does he want to go out fighting a guy so much smaller than him? I’m not sure what that victory does for him.”

After eventually breaking down Cotto, who gave a valiant effort, Mexico’s Margarito has other avenues he can take.

Arum is proposing a welterweight tournament.

Welterweight tournament

A welterweight tournament that pits the best 147-pounders of the world against each other is Arum’s idea. He says it's reminiscent of the 1980s when fighters like Roberto Duran, Sugar Ray Leonard, Wilfredo Benitez, Hearns and others clashed.

“It’s the hottest division in boxing,” said Arum pointing to a Friday night match at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino where welterweights Jesus Soto-Karass and David Estrada engaged in a firefight for eight rounds. It was Soto-Karass who emerged the victor of the brutal affair with a left hook to the jaw.

“How many do you get as exciting as the fight between Soto-Karass and David Estrada?” Arum said. “What makes boxing interesting is you have these world class fighters and make them in different combinations. Sometimes they even fight each other again.”

Arum proposed that the winner between Sugar Shane Mosley and Nicaragua’s Ricardo Mayorga in late September fight the winner between Zab Judah and Joshua Clottey that is scheduled for Saturday Aug. 2. He also has a number of other welterweights waiting in the wings.

“All four guys are practically at the end of their careers. Not one guy outdoes the other. I like that,” says Rivera about the proposed welterweight tournament.

“If you had this (tournament) in the heavyweight division it would be a bore, but doing it in the welterweight division I think makes it exciting,” Arum said while at a Las Vegas casino and hoping to put Soto-Karass in the welterweight mix. “I would also love to see Judah against a guy like Margarito.”

If Margarito finds it difficult to attract a marquee name opponent such as De La Hoya, there are plenty of other willing welterweights.

And let’s not forget Cotto. Though he lost to Margarito, the Puerto Rican welterweight is still one of the best fighters in the world pound for pound. He fits right in the middle of any welterweight tourney that would also include Paul Williams, Andre Berto and Kermit Cintron.

Few welterweights in the world cared to enter the ring with the long-armed dynamo Margarito, who twice derailed Puerto Rico’s other ex champion, Kermit “The Killer” Cintron.

People seem to dismiss Cintron, but the iron shouldered fighter packs knockout power in either hand, he hits harder than Cotto and was one of the few 147-pounders in the world willing to exchange blows with Margarito.

“Kermit (Cintron) banged Margarito with big shots and cleaner than Cotto did,” Steward said of Margarito’s ability to withstand a knockout blow. “Kermit was hitting him on the chin and he still kept coming.”

Steward is convinced that Margarito is the most dangerous welterweight in the world and has now attained superstardom.

Veteran cut man Rivera, who has witnessed first hand a number of the best boxers who ever lived, says that he understands if De La Hoya overlooks Margarito.

“He won’t take Margarito for his farewell appearance. I wouldn’t if I was Oscar. I would not take Margarito,” said Rivera who admires De La Hoya for keeping the sport on the front page. “De La Hoya needs an exciting fight too, to quiet all the Oscar haters. I like Oscar, he’s done a lot for boxing and Latins, but everything comes to an end. I’d hate to see Oscar knocked out.”

Meanwhile, Margarito sits on top of the welterweight world and is surely close to the top of boxing’s best fighters pound for pound.

“He’s a superstar now,” said Steward.

Radam G:  Manny is right. But stranger things are know to happen in that hurt square. I remember being a young kid and hearing that Tyson was too dangerous for Douglas. I heard that Liston was too dangerous for Cassius "The Lewisville Lips" Clay. I heard that Hagler was too dangerous for Sugar Ray Leonard without a warn-up bout after being out of the game for three years. I heard that Miranda was too dangerous for the Kelly "The Ghost" Pavlik. The Ghost knocked him silly, then knocked the champ Jermain Taylor doubt silly, lmao. I remember that Left Hook Lack was too dangerous for "Slappy" Joe Calzaghe. Calzaghe slapped him stupid and laughed. Dangerous is a part of the game. Margarito deserves the OSCAR. And Big Money O is a Mexican Warrior born in California, as is Margarito. Warriors fight wars. It is time for a Cali-Mexican shootout! Neither one of these dudes are scare! Holla!

Radam G:  *"Left hook" Jeff Lacy.....

FLOYD MAYWEATHER IS THE LEGEND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:  Yeah, yeah, the same Stewart who lost to Margarito TWICE: Training Kermit Cintron, and then predicting Cotto to win. Manny Stewart is just like all the other "experts" of boxing. I remember when Mosley fought Winky, they asked before the fight who he tought was going to win, and he explain some crap, and by the 12th round he said that he had a talk to Mosley the night before telling Mosley not to take the fight. I don't care what they say: Oscar CAN and WILL defeat Margarito, IF he doesn't take the littlte Asian dude. That would be an insult.................And to the Floyd predators, before they say the same crap about Hatton but Hatton was ONE division lower. Pacquiao is WAY too little for Oscar. That would be a KO in a circus fight.
Tuesday Jul 29, 2008
Oscar Meza:  I agree with Rivera I would hate to see Oscar De La Hoya get knocked after all he has done for boxing and the latino community.Antonio Margarito is just to dangerous but at the same time I feel kind of bad for Antonio because he has earned a high paying mega fight like that.
Tuesday Jul 29, 2008
rudy:  I hope Oscar steps up and makes this fight. Just dont see it happening, its all about $$$ in these days and who can blame them.
Tuesday Jul 29, 2008
#1 pacfan P4P KING:  Oscar would not stand a chance with Margarito. My washed up Golden Boy is better callin it quits now before he ruins his legacy.
Tuesday Jul 29, 2008
Eastar:  I say Oscar knocks Mar-Burrito out in the sixth round. It's a legend vs. a [C] fighter. But I rather see oscar fight Wacquaio, and destroy that myth just like Cotto's myth got destroyed ( just look at Cotto in that picture up there, gruesome ).....Ya dig? Holla
Tuesday Jul 29, 2008
Spinach Chin:  I bet Kermit Cintron feels a little comforted after Saturday night. Margarito kncoks off A+ fighters pretty good for a C -level fighter eh Eastar?
Tuesday Jul 29, 2008
Jude:  i agree on the gruesome picture! he got his A$$ handed to him last weekend. I don't know about Oscar knocking out Tony though, that seems a little far fetched. Oscar would lose that fight badly in my opinion. There is only one man who can beat Margarito and he is on a little vacation somewhere in Michigan....or Vegas....not quite sure where he is at the time.
Tuesday Jul 29, 2008
Miguel QUITTO:  Not too worried about this fight happening. Oscar would never want to be embarassed by a Mexican in his final bout. Marg should ...1) Fight Shane Mosley 2) Call out Floyd Mayweather the way Hatton did. Not at some B.S. boxing website. On national television where he can question his legacy....3) Fight Paul Williams.......4)Fight Zab Zudah. Take your pick because i think they all would make the sport a little more entertaining! Especially the Williams fight. I think the punisher deserves a big fight like this.
Tuesday Jul 29, 2008
Eastar:  To: Miguel QUITTO. I like that name.... But anyway, I agree Paul Williams deserves a big fight like this. Bob Arum kept QUITTO, I mean, Cotto as far away from Williams as possible - especially after he beat Mar-Burrito. They need to stop worrying about Oscar in his last fight, and start looking for the real Welterweight champ - PUNISHER Paul. Ya dig?
Tuesday Jul 29, 2008
Frank:  #1 pacfan P4P King:Eastar, you're retarded obviously. your whole opinion is flawed. Oscar knocks out margarito in the sixth? really? a "[C] fighter who just finished knocking out the previously proclaimed one of the best p4p in boxing? OMG....
Tuesday Jul 29, 2008
Eastar:  Cotto was never an A fighter dude. He was a fly by night "Champion" who cheated to beat Zab Judah, RAN from Shane Mosley ( without granting him a rematch cuz he knew the outcome ) and knocked out a few bums. He's the product of Bob Arum hype, lol......And you know this - man..Haha
Tuesday Jul 29, 2008
Miguel QUITTO:  i love it how the QUITTO fans always like to call out PBF for fighting low competition but dont criticize their boy for fighting ALFONSO GOMEZ. i also agree with the Zab Judah comments, Miguel was hurting in that fight and conveniently hit Zab in the junk like 3 times. Giving obvious low blows to zab and running out of the ring before the winner was announced on saturday.....NOW THATS WHAT I CALL THE HEART OF A CHAMPION! Now i can't wait for some QUITTO lovers to come on here and constantly spew out Mayweathers name like it is the only word they know...
Tuesday Jul 29, 2008
MAYWEATHER THE QUITTER:  YO EASTER? I'VE BEEN READING ALOT OF YOUR COMMENTS AND YOU SOUND SO STUPID.STOP EMBARRASING YOUR SELF LIKE THAT DUDE.SERIOUSLY.HOW THE F**K CAN YOU SAY OSCAR IS GOING TO KO MARGARITO IN 6?IF YOU WANT ATTENTION, JUST GO TO THE CIRCUS AND GET BEAT UP BY A LION.THEN YOU WILL COMEOUT ON THE FRONT PAGE OF THE NEWS.YOU ARE JUST PLAIN STUPID.PEACE.
Tuesday Jul 29, 2008
rudy:  straight haters on here
Tuesday Jul 29, 2008
959 Santa:  Oscar fought Chavez,Hopkins,Trinidad and now Margarito is too dangerous for him. Oscar could face Margarito at 154. At 147 I don't think Oscar stands a chance. Margarito looked slow against Santos at 154. That's Oscar best chance is to take on Margarito at 154. At least at 154 Oscar probably wont get knocked out.
Tuesday Jul 29, 2008
Arturo:  I think Oscar can beat Margarito in a 4 round exhibition.Oscar will get criticized pretty bad if he turns down Margarito, after The Tornado called him out after Saturday's bout.It would seem like Pacquiao would be the safe way out.I feel like he should give Berto a chance if he's scared of Antonio.
Tuesday Jul 29, 2008
William J Crum:  I would like to see Oscar against either PacMan or Israel Vazquez for his farewell fight. I think he beats them both in Vietnam-type WARS and seals his enshrinement in Canastota!!!!!
Tuesday Jul 29, 2008
DaveB:  I think Margarito still needs to stay away from Williams. I see that fight being the same as the first. Williams moving and moving some more to take the decision. As far as Oscar, I think that fight might get made. I don't see Oscar getting knocked out but losing by decision and I don't mean majority or split decision.
Tuesday Jul 29, 2008
Tempe,AZ:  If De La Hoya- Margarito goes down this is what happens: Oscar doesn't go toe to toe with a dangerous fighter like Margarito, but uses his far more surperior boxing skills. His footwork is way better then Cotto's so he can avoid those Tornado Furries. Oscar will pick apart Margarito just like he did to Trinidad who has simular punching power. De La Hoya"s only weakness is whether he has gas left in the tank for 10, 11, and 12. P.S- De La Hoya won't run but box his way to victory.
Tuesday Jul 29, 2008
sec:  Boxing is a sport of thrill provided the match is even. How can anyone say its fair for DeLa Hoya to fight Pacquiao? Pacquaio can only match Dela Hoya in popularity but firepower, its like throwing potatoes to an elephant. Its best for Dela Hoya to fight Margarito. The latter got power punches but lacks defense whereas Dela Hoya may have a little disadvantage when it comes to power but he has great defense and has speed. I'll go for DELA HOYA-MARGARITO.....
Tuesday Jul 29, 2008
TroubleHorn:  Who cares about Oscar? How about Margarito - Williams REMATCH!!! I think Tony KO's the The Punisher, but he has a pretty good beard too. As long as Paul doesn't have that ridiculous mohawk going we're in for a helluva a fight.
Tuesday Jul 29, 2008
Lan:  who says that Pacman lacks power? i think the only disadvantage i see is height and reach but power i don't think so. Pacman cant knockout his opponent with one punch but volume of punches. stamina will play a key role here and i think Pacman has it while De La Hoya it's a big quetion mark...has anyone know that when Pacman trained in Cebu he would ran several miles and the only guy who can catch up with him is a professional marathoner, other boxers/sparring partners couldn't catch up...that is why Pacman is so unique...in terms of physiological make-up, just like Lance Armstrong, he's unique...Lance has huge heart (literally) thats why he's endurance is well documented (go check Discovery Channel)... i wouldn't be surprise if Discovery Channel will invite Pacman...
Tuesday Jul 29, 2008
Waldorf:  Wow, arum has all these w/w in his stable, he want a tournment, that is funny when PBF was champ, it was a no go, what a money manic. The fight is PAUL vs. MARGarito. he beat him fair and square. ani;t no fun when the rabbit got the gun. Call out PAUL, all these fake fight sissy, never own to there bs word, just fake blow hearts
Tuesday Jul 29, 2008
Erudite:  Fights I'l like to see .... Margarito vs Williams - winner (Margarito) vs Judah vs Clottey winner (Clottey). Kermit Cintron vs Cotto - winner (Cotto) vs Quintana vs Berto winner (Berto). Margarito vs Clottey vs winner of Cotto vs Berto. I'm thinking we could wind up with a Margarito vs Cotto rematch by this time next year.
Tuesday Jul 29, 2008
The REAL Salt lover:  Rarely in boxing -- in any sport really -- does an event live up to the hype. Cotto-Margarito might have surpassed it. We all expected a terrific fight but we got one for the ages between two of the best in the world, pound-for-pound. In the end, however, it was Margarito, seemingly with a piece of steel in his chin, who took everything Cotto had to offer and never for a minute stopped rolling forward. Promoter Bob Arum's analogy was on the mark when he said Margarito was like a freight train going downhill until he ran Cotto over. But what a fight.

Tuesday Jul 29, 2008

MAYWEATHER THE QUITTER:  I APOLOGIZE MR. EASTAR! DONPUTO69 PUT ME UP TO IT. HE SAID HE WAS MAD THAT COTTO IS A BUM AND EVERYBODY KNOWS IT. HE EVEN GOT ON HIS KNEES FOR ME. I REALIZED YOUR A GREAT WRITER WILL YOU EXCEPT MY APOLOGY?
Wednesday Jul 30, 2008

The REAL Salt lover:  To the stupid jerk who wrote in my name starting with: "Rarely in boxing -- in any sport really -- does " show yourself and stop copying off my name. That was not me. Why does everybody copies my name? Ya'll like it huh??
Wednesday Jul 30, 2008
Pumpkinescobar:  Margarito would lose to Oscar, Just coz Margarito beat a quitter does not make him any better than Oscar its like this all the time in boxing everyone held Cotto in high regard but at the end of the day he was not that great yeah he beat Judah, Mosley, but Mosley is not the fighter he used to be, Oscar lost to him when they were both in thier prime, Judah is not the best either so why all the hype now over Margarito he beat Cotto who was no better than him no one realized it until he quit like a female dog.

stop hatin:  cotto is a true warrior. He fought bravely, and prepared to his best for that fight. his combinations were excellent, fast, strong, accurate. But no one can take punishment like margarito. And margarito is an oversized welterweight. Your average welterweight does not stand that tall, so he obviously dehadrates really well to make the 147 limit. He was definitely not 147 when he stepped in that ring with cotto, however cotto looked closer to 147 than margarito. In any way, you gotta give credit to cotto for taking the fight. floyd gayweather, and shane mosley never wanted to fight margarito. with all of floyds skill he would have gotten his cocky ass knocked the fuck out for his first taste of defeat as well. Mayweather's a great fighter but he didnt have the balls that cotto did. Mosley neither. So give the puerto rican warrior his respect. He was hurt, he was feeling the effects of a big man's concussion punches and thats why he didnt want to suffer permanent damage by continuing. by the way go pacman, may you do your best to destroy oscar if you take him on in december. make that straight left hand connect to his face and wear him down. then more straight left hands till he's done.

This sicko does that to just about all the regulars. I'm certain that the menace probably have severe mentally illness and very low self-esteem. Holla!

JuanM:  ODLH against Pacquiao is not good for either fighter. Pacman is agreat fighter, but is way too small and DLH would hurt him badly even at this stage of his career where he no longer fights to win, but rather fights not to lose. What good is a fight like that for Oscar? He gains nothing and would lose whatever credibility he may still have. Pacman would get the beating of his life, but would make the biggest payday of his life as well as more respect for having the courage to get in the ring witha much bigger man. In the end win or lose Pacman wins and win or lose, Oscar loses...DLH should not make this fight as it will definitely ruin his ever diminishing legacy. If he really wamts to ho out with a bang, then he should fight Margarito...He has earned his shot the DLH sweepstakes!! However, Oscar WILL lose to Margarito at 147 and since he is always in a position to dictate fighting terms, his only chance of winning this fight would be to force Margarito to fight him at 154 instead. Margarito may still win that fight as well and even if he doesn't , its still no sin to lose agaoinst the Golden Boy, AND he will be substantially richer for his efforts. Bottom line, Margarito has earned his shot at Oscar. If Oscar can somehow pull out a bloody, and bruising win, he would finally earn the respect of all Mexicans which is something he's always wanted, but has never been able to get. Its a no brainer for both fighters as well as for the sport. C'mon Oscar, make this happen!! Let's get it on!!
Wednesday Jul 30, 2008
Rick:  Of course Oscar would fight a 120 pounder. so that he can go out looking good in his eyes. Everyone else knows that Oscar never risked anything. Oh, by the way Pernell beat him too just for the record. He would lose to Margarito at 120lbs or at 175lbs.
Wednesday Jul 30, 2008
Wisdom:  I'd like to see Margarito move up (after unifying the welterweight title) to 154 and eventually 160. I believe that he's big enough to carry the additional weight. A face-off with Pavlik would be a great fight.
Wednesday Jul 30, 2008
Kool-Aid:  Margarito-Williams II or Margarito-De La Hoya should be the next action for Margarito. Either one will do.
Wednesday Jul 30, 2008
gverns:  dont worry guys Oscar will fight Pacquiao and if he wins Margarito will be his final fight.
Wednesday Jul 30, 2008
Coco:  If DLH wants to close the show in emphatic fashion, I would recommend DLH to forget about all the millions of dollars he would make fighting Margarito (and the probability of getting knockout), forget about fighting PACMAN (for criticized-reasons), and think about leaving the sport as a champion. DLH can challenge Andre Berto and fight him for his champion or fight Paul Williams and beat him for his champions. These guys are perfect for DLH; they lack experience, haven't face any top opponent, and are still in the developing stage of their careers. Plus, DLH wouldn't come out hurt. These two options are viable for DLH to leave the sport making a statement.
Wednesday Jul 30, 2008
butthead2001:  The deal here is this.....does Oscar wants to kiss the canvass on his farewell fight (like the Hopkins) or have Mexican-/Americans respect him to get rid of the Mexicutioner. Its an odd fight with the size difference but I guess its a win win situation for a Pacman-Oscar showdown.
Thursday Jul 31, 2008
robshep123:  I would think that oscar delahoya fighting antonio margarito is the perfect fight to seal in his greatness Just like sugar rayleonard muhammad ali, chavez, and joe louis they all fought thebest right down to the end, if He finishes the fight better than cotto he wins. If he defeats margarito it will be straight out of a rocky movie. He also will erase the mayweather fight. and gain great respect from his mexican fans and anyone else for that matter. he can't lose.
Friday Aug 1, 2008
Jose Rey:  If De la hoya has pants he shoud fight Antonio margarito If no going to fight margarito quit boxing at once, the most of the fan are not ignorant they know that he is after the big money ,like always.I am not going to pay a penny to see him fight if he fight manny

Playing Matchmaker: Williams/Cotto, Pavlik/Abraham Winners Meet
"I wouldn't mind paying 50 dollars for a Paul Williams /Miguel Cotto fight with Margarito/Clottey in the undercard. Or Jermain Taylor/Paul Williams with a fight between Kelly Pavlik/Arthur Abraham on the same night. A set up like that would be good for boxing 'cause the fans would see four good fighters in one night and possibly see the two winners fight in the near future.Too bad boxing doesn't think about the fans the way fans think about boxing." ---TSS reader Arturo plays matchmaker
