An Open Letter To Antonio Margarito
By John Nguyen
Dear Antonio,
I, along with much of the boxing world, owe you an apology. A real man admits when he's wrong, and, man, was I wrong. Not just about the outcome of Saturday night's war with Miguel Cotto, but about your identity as a fighter through your entire professional career. This isn't an attempt to jump on the Antonio Margarito Bandwagon; right about now, I'm guessing the line for that is longer than the one for Space Mountain. In contrast, this is a sincere apology to a guy that most of us had pegged completely wrong for the longest time.
The general consensus among the sport's observers was that you were cut from the same cloth as other great Mexican warriors of years past, but maybe lacked the polish to excel at the elite level. Let's be honest; your track record going into the Cotto fight didn't exactly quicken many pulses.
Most of the fans and experts who picked you to win Saturday cited Cotto's flaws rather than your virtues, which was a back-handed compliment of sorts. Those who favored Cotto, myself included, were going with a fighter who had the look of a young thoroughbred, untainted by defeat and undaunted by challenge.
So, about halfway through Saturday's slugfest, and with Cotto largely in charge of the proceedings, I sat back, satisfied that my record in official TSS fight picks would cruise to 6-0. As I was marveling at my own prognosticating talents, something happened. Suddenly, the tide turned, and you did what you do best. You humble people, opponents and doubters alike.
Miguel Cotto was doing exactly what most of us thought he would do. He was boxing effectively and landing wicked blows with regularity. He demonstrated that, at a purely athletic level, he has the edge. But, the thing about prizefighting is that it is not a purely athletic contest. Intangibles such as heart and desire are as significant as a good hook. We saw an example of that on Saturday night.
We all know it's been a long road for you, Antonio. But I'm not sure any of us really knew how difficult it was until we saw the desperation with which you pursued victory on Saturday night. Those punches were fueled by years of frustration, lack of respect, and broken dreams. The portrait painted was of a man who knew this was his last chance, and he wasn't going to let it slip through his fingers without clenching his fists as tight as he could.
It took fifteen long years as a professional, but you are now sitting on top of the world. I'm guessing it's a pretty sweet view.
For the record, I'm not embarrassed to have picked Cotto. I, along with what seemed like the majority of the “experts,” went with skill, speed, and youth to carry the day. Cotto was the logical pick when examining the fight from all angles. But logic doesn't win fights.
You don't need anyone to tell you how big this is for both your career and your legacy. All of a sudden, those comparisons with Chavez, Barrera, and Morales don't seem like such a stretch. Still, remember that the path to greatness is long, with many dues still left to be paid. But if the past is any indication, I'm going to guess that you'll be up for the journey.
Congratulations, Antonio, from just one of many whom you proved wrong on Saturday night. Bask in the overdue, but well-deserved spotlight. But not for too long, though. If Mr. Cotto is willing, we just might have to see this again.
Sincerely,
A Humbled Fightwriter

I agree..When a man is wrong he must step up to the plate and I'm one of them that was wrong. Once again I have to CONGRATULATE Antonio Margarito as well. I also picked Cotto. But not because of who Miguel Cotto is, I picked him because I felt he was the quicker, more athletic fighter, just as hard of a puncher and better defense. I knew you were a straight ahead come at you fighter and I figured you would walk into all of his punches but I didn't think you would walk through his punches like you did and I was totally wrong. Your heart is truly one of the biggest that ever fought in this game. I Congratulate you!

I congratulate him as well BUT AS I COMMENTED BEFORE - THAT FIGHTER WHO MARGARITO KNOCKED DOWN ON SATURDAY WASN'T COTTO AT HIS BEST... and some of you haters will try to look it as an excuse but it is the true.... did he punch Margarito's body (NO).. did he looked in his best shape? (NO)... was he fighting at the same speed as previuos fights? (NO)... Did he looked as focus and hungry as previous fights (NO).... so.... let's wait for a while and see what develops.. I don't believe he was ready for this one... and there is the rumours that Evangelista (trainer) and him are not communicating well... so everything adds up.... so I believe it was Margarito's night as well. I wish he comes back fighting Paul Williams and beat him soundly and then ask for a rematch so there is no doubt he can be the best boxer of the decade. AHHHH, AND FOR THOSE MAYWEATHER FREAK FANS... how do you believe PBF could handle Margarito or Cotto at his best... this is another league for Mayweaher.. the one he obviously don't want to face. AT THE END YOU CAN HAVE ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD BUT RESPECT IS GAINED WHEN YOU FIGHT THE BEST... MAYWEATHER DOESN'T HAVE THE HEART TO FACE ONE OF THESE TWO. THAT'S A FACT. LIVE WITH IT.

FLOYD MAYWEATHER IS THE LEGEND!!!!!!!!!!!!::
|
You know I'm really happy Margarito kicked Cotto's ass and whooped ALL the writers, and I don't mean just TSS, I mean almost ALL the DAMN writers. Everybody in the boxing world was hoping for Cotto to be a solid P4P material, and many considering as "the best". Ever since Corley and Torres touched his head deep, I knew the guy was nothing great. Don't get me wrong, he's a pretty good fighter and has some skills, but he gets hit a lot even against insignifacnt opponents. At the beginning before writing in the TSS about this fight, I was hoping Cotto won and remained undefeated, and his myth would grow a lot more, so everybody get a rude awakening against Floyd Mayweather Jr., but then I saw the fights against Corley, Torres, Mosley, AND EVEN Gomez, who touched Cotto downstairs, I quickly changed for Margarito. And he did. Margarito not only TKO's Cotto, but he TKO's the writers, the media, the so-called "experts" (Like the 13 out 15 who predicted Cotto was going to win HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Man, THEY SUCK), and MOST of all the OBNOXIOUS Cotto fans. They all though they had a superstar in the making. Now the only card they have to play is to attack Floyd for not fighting Margarito. But what the hell, they just received their first MOUTH-SILENCING and KEYBOARD-SHUTTING, even though there some who dones't have the DIGNITY of defeat. But then again what the hell. And as for Cotto, take a rest and comeback with someone light......................uruk-hai, Floyd Mayweather Jr. (39-0 by the way) is more REAL than your idol (47-3-2, PHEW!! That looks so ugly HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!).

You're also happy that PBF retired like a girl at the right time otherwise Margarito would be a mandatory fight. I don't know why you keep insisting that fighter records is how you determine a fighter, it's not about anymore i thought you were a true boxing fan. What a joke.

I don't know why an apology is needed when it's just a prediction, you pick your fighter that's it. I picked Cotto also and was wrong but who's always right. A fighter is known for who he fights and that is how he will be remember legends make fights and Floyd is no legend boy.

Props Nguyen. Major props to Margarito, what a fight. And to anyone bringing up that retired bum needs to be quiet. It doesnt matter what you say Floyd would do, because that fool doesnt have the balls to step into the ring with either of these two. Until he does, then you talk your garbage.

First and foremost ,congratulations to both fighters for bringing boxing back to the front pages and not letting us down. I'm an amateur boxing coach whio revels in watching a bout likeMargarito - Cotto ,over and over in the gym with my boxers and being able to dissect and show the young up and coming boxers how two diffrent boxing styles complimented each other on fight night. There was'nt the clowning of a Prince Naseem Hamed,or the disrespect shown to opponents by Hector Macho Camacho and Definitely not the runninig style of PBF. I'm dissapointed however in assinine comment by ignorant so called boxing fans who wish to continue to compare PBF to Margariro, Cotto or anyone else in that division who is still in the ring boxing and not on some private jet talking smack about how great he was,as i tell my guys all the time let your skills and determination speak for you in THE RING anything else is just smack. Conratulations once again Margarito!

I enjoy every style and every fight from slugfests to boxing clinics. And about Floyd's record, if you LOOK CLOSELY I put it inside parenthesis, in others words I wasn't making a big statement about it. I wasn't talking about records, it was just to remind these haters FLoyd still unbeaten.........................................................................REMEMBER PEOPLE: FLOYD MAYWEATHER JR. FLOYD MAYWEATHER IS THE LEGEND!!!!!!!!!!!!::

I have a better question for you on that: FOR WHAT?????????????? By the way you're IGNORANT you answer yourself and you don't even realize it: "i remember one time scareweather was ducking cotto and margarito to fight de la hoya for more $$$$$$$$$" For Floyd, Cotto, Margarito and all of those guys this is a BUSINESS to make $$$$$$$. The difference between your ASS KICKED boy and Floyd is that Flody is HIS OWN MAN, and you BEAT P boy HAS A BOSS and TAKES ORDERS. If Cotto was his own boss like Floyd, he probably be doing the same thing. That is so OBVIOUS. You guys don't criticize Floyd for any of that. You just criticize him, because like the rest of his haters, you wanna see him lose. Until he lose, he can take on the UNIVERSE and you LOSERS are going to keep on criticizing him..................HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! About Floyd not fighting in school, ASK ZAB who Floyd used to KICK HIS ASS in school HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.................Oh! Also in the basket court, ask him who Floyd used to beat up in front of his friends. Go ahead ask him (And I'm playing your stupid game, because Zab would be too smart to hang with an INSIGNIFICANT LOSER like you) Like I told HUNDREDS OF TIME, take a good look at yourself before calling anybody STUPID. Don't you HEAR or READ everything Floyd says......................... Like I say: The only thing the Cotto fans can do is attacking Floyd for satying retired. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I picked Margarito to win by KO. So it wasn't that shocking too me. It will be interesting too see who Margarito fights next. I think he should fight winner of Clottey vs Judah, then go after rematch with Cotto or Paul Williams. But I think that De La Hoya will duck him, he's too dangerous of an opponent for De La Hoya at this point in his career

The year of the upset is in full effect. On this bout, I lost my bet. I'll lose a few more, yet! Because I roll that way. No play, no pay! Cotto changed up, goofed up and fought the wrong type of fight. He psyched Margarito up to kicking his butt. One does not fight a predatory pugilist by moving straight back and giving him plenty of punching room. You throw his balance off by moving side to side, reminiscent of the job Aaron Pryor did on Alexis Arguello. One does not fight this type by standing along the ropes. You move circularly at close range, crowding and potshoting him -- remindful of Marvin Hagler's job done on Tommy Hearns. Besides, you keep a predator turning to find you. One makes it an easy hunting ground for a predatory pugilist by using a lot of histrionics with excessive head, body, feet and hand movements. This will exhaust you, while making him encouraged, energized and hyped-up to knock you silly. He forgets about being tired by being entertained by those theatrics. Boxing is the "Theater of the unexpected." Cotto gets a prune award for his whipping -- and he didn't quit. And I expect that Margarito will now get the OSCAR AWARD -- Oscar "Golden Boy," aka "Big Money O" De la Hoya -- for his win. Wow! A golden goose will be laying those money eggs for a true "Mexican Warrior," who many called a "Tijuana Tomato," a "Tijuana Potato," and "Mar-Barrito." I wrongully said that Margarito had martyr warrior mentality. Well, this Cali-born hurtman is nobody's food or martyr. Nobody will be cooking or metaphorically burying him. When you're in the hurt square with him, bring your A-game. Bringing a B, C, D, or F one, will send you home in pain or metaphorically nailed in a coffin. Holla!

The great thing about this welter division is that it's so open. There's so many talents. A loss isn't gonna hurt any of the top welters. Afterall, if you put any of the top welters in together, there's a 50/50 chance for each fighter. Williams could lose to a Berto, while Berto could lose to a Margarito, then Margarito could lose to Williams & so on. Those are just 3 of the top fighters. Now add everyone else into the mix and you've got a hell of a lot of entertaining fights. I'm not so sure we'll ever have an undisputed welterweight champion because they're all so evenly matched. I personally think if anyone can do it though, it'll be Williams.

For the last time, go easy on the caps, son. I stopped reading after your first sentence - and this isn't 'hate' for some of us, it's called criticism. Criticism for having a string of meaningless and predictable fights. Criticism for running from any perceived threat that might actually hand him a loss and/or an ass-kicking. Years from now Floyd will still have to answer why he didn't fight the likes of Margarito, Cotto, etc. Don't hate on us for pointing that truth out.

Everybody is always saying that his record is not impressive because of his losses. You all fail to recognize or clarify to other uniformed people is that Margarito turned pro at the age of 15 and was fighting professionals well beyond his age early in his career. At the age of 18 he suffered his third loss to a unbeaten pro boxer aged 28 years, which many people believe is the prime age for boxing 25-30. He had no one to guide his career. Even the great Floyd Mayweather junior did not face tough prospects early in his career. He fought for the most part over the hill fighter (age) or boxers with losing records. His loss to Paul Williams was scored on points and loss #4 was ended to Heabbutt in 10th and was very close.
