Margarito TKOs Cotto!
By Michael Woods
The Mexican kept coming forward, like a Terminator. he ate shot after shot, but his chin, sturdy beyond belief, kept him on his feet. Then in the eleventh round of a classic tussle at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday evening. Antonio Margarito imposed his will on Miguel Cotto, and forced the Cotto corner to throw in the towel after Cotto hit the deck twice. Blood streamed from Cotto's left eye, and he tasted it, and his first professional loss. The end came at 2:05, via TKO.
Cotto came in with a 32-0 (26 KOs) mark while Margarito came in with 36-5 (26 KOs) record. Both men weighed in Friday at 147 pounds. Cotto's WBA welterweight bout was on the line.
Cotto looked super confident in the first. He moved smartly, and banged away at Margarito, who didn't get untracked. In the second, Margarito warmed up. They traded, and Margarito landed a sharp right. Cotto landed hooks, but his nose leaked blood. They both landed 35 shots in the second. In the third, Margarito was all forward motion. Marg drew a warning to keep em up, his second. Thirty seconds later, it happened again. Cotto looked like a seriously slick boxer.
In the fourth, Cotto made the slower handed Margarito miss often. The Mexican's jab wasn't a potent weapon. The Puerto Rican's accuracy was impressive. Margarito would've been well served to work the body, as Cotto's slipping was on message. In the fifth, Cotto's jab kept Margarito at bay. A sharp combo snapped Margarito's head back. He made Margarito miss like Pernell Whitaker at the end of the round.
In the sixth, Cotto kept his senses, a la Money Mayweather, while backed on the ropes. He backed up, as usual, but not in a manner to put off the judges, in my opinion. He worked in some uppercuts in the round. While lefty, he smacked home a left. In the seventh, Cotto's D was impressive. Then Margarito came on at the 1:40 mark, and he had Cotto holding on. "Now we have our classic," Max Kellerman said. Superb round of action. Margarito landed 40 to Cotto's 23.
In the eighth, Cotto moved better than before. Both men had good wind, but Margarito is almost like a Terminator with his resolute forward movement. Has anyone checked his chin for a foreign object? Cotto moved mostly to his left, by the way, away from Margarito's left hook. Of course, Tony's right is none too shabby as well. In round nine, Cotto landed better, but would the judges reward him as he moved backwards? He was slipping so well, were the judges sophisticated enough to see this? In round ten, blood came from Cotto's nose. But Cotto moved so well, he confounded Margarito. Until the 10 second mark, when Margarito landed a left-right-left that stunned the Puerto Rican.
In the 11th, Margarito was again unphased as he ate shots. He had Cotto on the ropes and the crowd gasped. He went down, to one knee, at 1:32. Blood streamed from his eye. He held on for dear life, and then took another knee. The towel was thrown in, and Margarito exulted.
Stay tuned for Ron Borges' in depth ringside report.

Cotto has no Corazone. He took a knee, then took another. WTF????!!!!!! Cotto foght like I said he would - a good eight rounds then run out of gas. Margarito fought the way I knew he would - come straight farward, and throw a lot punches. Margs is good: Cotto is garbage. Quiter, lololololol, Hahahaha. Hollaaaaaaaaaa

Props to Margarito. What a great fight. Margarito's key to victory was throwing alot of punches and that's what he did. Margarito vs. DLH next??. Will Oscar fight Margarito is the question. When Kellerman asked Margarito at the end of the fight who's next. Margarito want's Oscar over Paul Williams. Why, Margarito isn't dumb. It's more money plus Oscar is Mexican. A battle of who is the toughest Mexican at 147. I say Margarito is without a doubt.

PBF has no legacy.
None.
Just another incredibly skilled guy without a defining moment. Fight history is written by those who walk away.....AFTER they vanquish everyone in their path. And the WW division is a path filled with the likes of real warriors like Cotto and Margarito. Sure, PRF has the skills to beat the both. But the Ba@lls? I don't think so......
Come on back Floyd. Forget ODLH (who I admire) and beat Cotto, Margarito, Williams and
Clottey and we'll give you a spot in history. Stay retired and look at yourself in the mirror....and know that you left the chance for respect in your coward hands.

Wow!!!! First and foremost congrats to all Margarito fans! UNBELIEVABLE! NOBODY could've withstood that Cottp display of finesse and raw power we witnessed tonight (except for Tony M). Next, why is Oscar even in the picture? WHY? Put aside the crappy Forbes and Mayorga fight (both which are worthless), Oscar has no place or right outside of his name to even be considered a contender. The last victory of any merit was against Vargas. Every big name after that has beat Oscar and Felix Sturm was robbed to set up the body shot of the decade that Bernard smote Oscar with! Fight of the year, YES! With all of the nail biting and finger crossing I did tonight between these 2 warriors, I still saw (and I know Floyd did too) fatal flaws that Floyd would've totally made mismatces. First: Cotto worked very little to the body which is his trademark though somehow he totally surpassed any performance he has ever put forth in what turned out to be the first loss of his career. Also, he had no answer for the Margarito uppercut. There were 2 rounds where his corner gave him absolutely no guidance. Second: Margarito never got the memo to step to his right to cut off Cotto's movemet. Any man of a lesser chin would've been wondering "how do they get those lights so high on the ceiling?", and Tony M's defense is just sooooo flawed (which actually may not be too much of a flaw if you eat steel prior to your bouts like Margarito). I'm just saying Floyd would've done 12 rounds of pop shotting Tony and 2 stepping to his left for a wipeout 12rd. unanimous decision over Tony if they would've fought tonight. It is clearly obvious Tony's boxing skills are not equal to his shear determination and steel jaw. But in closing, if Paul Williams doesn't come up with a helluva gameplan in a rematch, Tony will end up Undisputed WW champ in the very near future if someone could convince Oscar to stay in his office rather than the ring! (That by no means insinuates that Oscar beats Tony. I take Tony by tko in 7)

Unbelievable!! Margarito completely destroyed Cotto, yet your article leads readers to believe that Cotto was winning the fight all along....What fight were you watching? We all knew Cotto is the better boxer and is technically superior, however, and I've said this all along, he had never been in with a superior puncher with a granite chine and a steel will.....I predicted a 7th round TKO and although it did not happen, the 7th was the beginning of the end for Cotto...Had Margarito had more time in the round, Cotto would have gone down, but to Cotto's good fortune the round ended, but It was all downhill from there. Margarito has too much firepower and will power to spare! I wonder what all the so called experts will say now? What is the excuse now? Will Margarito receive the credit he deserves or will you excuse Cotto for having a "bad day".? What do you think now Jonh Nguyen and Ron Borges?? And you guys call yourselves subjective boxing writers?? Please!! Oh, and you DONPUTO....Did I not tell you Cotto had a suspect chin?? Your moronic reply to that was that his chin was better at 147 than 140....Obviously you have no clue!! How could Cotto stand up to a ferocious and relentless puncher like Margarito who is at home at 147 pounds while being knocked down by inferior punchers at 140? Shows you how much you know....Of course you will come back with some other stupid response, as usual. All you boxing "experts" open wide.....Have some well deserved crow!! To be fair, Cotto put up a great fight, he is a great fighter, but he didn't have enough heart and crumbled to the relentless pressure from the "Tijuana Tornado", as I predicted....I've been a fan of ODLH, however, fighting this guy would be a bad career move, especially this late in his career.....He certainly does not need to expose himself fighting Margarito at this stage of his career, but it sure would be fun to watch....If the DLH from 5 years ago showed up it would be a war!! Next for Margarito...Williams in the rematch. This time he will put him out of his misery by the 8th or 9th. Again.....Eat your words DonPuto!! As your name implies, you sure are not very bright, and that is putting it mildly.

FLOYD MAYWEATHER IS THE LEGEND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:
|
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Miguel Cotto P4P???? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I told ya Margarito was gonna beat lil' Cotto. Hey don!! Yeah, yeah all of them have lost, but......where's Floyd in any of those?????????????? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't worry, at least you still got Anony to give you any consolation LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!........All right time to get serious: First off, I'm happy this fight took place, in the first place to finally show the WORLD, and the DECENT Cotto Fans, not the obnoxious ones like these bozos, the DECENT, CLEAR MINDED ONES, that Cotto ain't ALL THAT. He's a pretty good fighter, but NOT GREAT. Second, and I'm saying now, if De la Hoya doesn't take Margarito, De la Hoya's a WUZZ. Now for the Cotto Fans who saw their boy getting whooped, are going to say: "Oh but what about Floyd, why he doesn't fight Marg?" Because Floyd's RETIRED, and a COMEBACK is possible. De la Hoya ANNOUNCED his last fight, and the ones available. And Margarito's right here. If Oscar takes that lil' Asian dude........Screw Oscar for real. Anyways, as for Cotto, the dignified thing to do is give rematch to either Zab, Shane, or a fight with Paul Williams. Well, I knew Margarito was gonna kill him.........................Oh! And about those 13 out of 15 "experts" who said Cotto was going to win: THEY SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congratulations to Margarito and all of the guys that picked him to win. I have to give Margarito all the credit in the world. Even though I had picked Cotto to win. I thought Cotto would fight a different fight then how he fought. He didn't go to the body really at all. He moved and backed away entirely too much. The last 2 rounds really did a lot of damage to him. It's going to be very hard for him to come back off a loss like that. Shades of Trinidad and Hopkins. Once again I take my hat off to Margarito!! Job well done.

Yeah, KJ, I said Cotto was going to win. And I also said these welterweights were all overrated, and would beat each other up, proving Floyd is the last great welterweight today. I also said Floyd was the only one who could not be beat. So take that prediction with a grain of salt because I'm not a ricky riCotto fan in the least. Nor a Mar-Burrito fan for that matter. Ya dig?

Thanks Arturo for giving these two fighters props. I mean two men go at, risk it all, and put everything on the line and all they seem to get here is dissed. Either one group is boasting about their guy saying I told you so or someone else is saying neither one is that good. I'm not buying it. Both of these guys fought their hearts out and deserve big admiration for being the warriors they are.

Congratulations Margarito. It is funny how people come into these forums and talk and talk some more, without realizing that Mexico, has a (population)108,700,891 million and Puerto Rico has, close to 4 million. Quite small, compared to Mexico. I truly understand, how happy Margarito followers, must feel, with his victory but, just mentioning past fights, ignoring the fact that Mexico is many times bigger, compared to Puerto Rico. So, if you increase the size of Puerto Rico, to match Mexico's population, what would be the outcome? No excuse here, Margarito won, fair and square but, do the math.

You know what's funny, these two warriors showed more guts and heart in this one fight then Mayweather showed his whole career. Big props to Margartio for the underdog winning through his will. Very impressive. You all know Cotto will be back. There's no doubt. In the meantime, we'll have a welterweight champ with a Margarito/Williams rematch. If Mayweather has an ounce of manhood in him, he'll come back to face the winner of that fight. Heed my words. BEWARE, MAYWEATHER FANS!!! When a lot of fools say for a long time a man can't be beaten, when he's on top of the world, there's no place to go but down. He will fall. When Mayweather returns and tries to become champ again by fighting a real PRIME welterweight, he'll be kissing the canvas. That day isn't far off. Next year, Mayweather's 0 has got to go. HA,HA,HA!!! It ain't over till it's over. Castillo and De la Hoya proved Mayweather could be beaten. I want all these Mayweather riders to all be back when it's your all's turn for that chump to lose. That day is almost here. I just know it. No such thing as unbeatable. Man, just you all wait...

FLOYD MAYWEATHER IS THE LEGEND!!!!!!!!!!!!::

Yeah, yeah, yeah don, you saw Floyd last night and he already told you ALL of his plans, huh? You went to his house and he and Roger, and Leonard Ellerbe, told you what they're going to do and what they are planning? You saw his agenda and met with his agents and they all gave you a Power Point presentation of what they're going to do, right? Because you're writing like if you even believe you knew what he's going to do. You know to tell you the truth, thinking right now, maybe it was better for Floyd if Cotto to had won last night, because Floyd haters after if Cotto's gone, they're going to use that same BS arguments with Margarito. There's no doubt Floyd would've beaten Cotto to the punch real EASY. I credit Margarito for doing it, but Floyd would beat BOTH. So, a COMEBACK IS POSSIBLE. We're all just going to have to wait and see. And if he comes back, it'll the second time, your mouth gets shut BIGTIME, after this loss. A guy like Floyd, who wastes SO MUCH $$$$$$$$$ (It's OBVIOUS and CLEAR) is definitely NOT going to stay retired. It happened to MANY fighters, even Mike Tyson, who was the man who made the most money in boxing. Time tells us almost everytime, these guys lose money and they always comeback. And when he does, he comesback and starts WINNING again, you haters are gonna be wishing he would've stayed retired. That's the most possible thing it can happen. Anyways, you can answer me and write all kinds of things; you can let the PAIN out that way HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ....................................And you say Margarito gave him a beating for 9-11 rounds only???......THANKGOD!!!!!!!!

Great! Now the only defense argument for the Cotto fans are the argument of accusing Floyd for not fighting Margarito. For what? Floyd's faster, smarter and better than Cotto. Floyd would have a Victory over Margarito with EASE. Man, this is EXACTLY what I feared if Cotto lost. Keep criticizing Floyd. Oh well, I guess that's their nature, to criticize him. And about Bob Arum, phew, I don't even want to talk about him. The old man went straight to Margarito after the fight and forgot all about his "son". That's the bad thing of defeating somebody. Why is everyone so obsessed with Floyd? He wasnt a part of this fight. Don is the worst, Scareweather this scareweather that. You are belittling floyd because you can't handle the fact that Cotto lost. Now im a Floyd and Cotto fan but you bad mouthing all Floyds achievements is ridiculous and it can easily be done to Cotto as well, for example, Cotto has only beat Corley,(past it and not top class) Urkal,(undercard fighter at best) Mallinaggi,(unproven) Quintana,(KO in 1st round to williams) Mosley(Past his best) and Judah(Mayweather been there done it) and lost to Margarito. I dont believe a single word of that because I believe Cotto is a great fighter and he will be back but it is stupid ripping on any of these fighters because both are exceptional and have achieved great things. Now lets discuss fights we wanna see and positive reasons why. Margarito, Cotto, Mayweather, Williams, Clotttey, Judah, Hatton, De la Hoya, Cintron, Mallinaggi, Berto, Peterson bros, Khan, maybe Pacman, and many more. Great potential for some superfights for years to come.

whats up man!
hey let me answer your questions...
ok the reason cotto didnt go to the body was because he would take savage uppercuts and thats why he stopped trying after he got his nose busted up in the 2nd round..he didnt like the price to pay, and yes cotto did win 4 of the first 5 rounds but took a beating margarito was just pounding and pounding and pounding to the head the body the arms the liver after the sixth round ended
everyone knew cotto was going to get knocked out and as soon as u thought it this fight started to become a massacre
and the only reason this fight lasted till the 11th was part heart for cotto and part the bell saving him twice.
in a re-match now that margarito knows cotto cant even dent him he would run all over him and give him a cintron type beating and not a cotto part 1 beating cuz it wont last as long.
someone call 911 beter yet call President Bush bcause our nations step-child (PR)just got blown away by a mexican tornado (tornado Tony)

I cant believe what im hearing.. Cotto looked like a over hyped kid fighting a grown man.. He had some speed and ran real good. He did not scratch Margarito.. He could have fought another 12 rounds... Cotto couldnt survive abuse and if he wasnt a puss he would have swang back. Instead of trying to cover up. He let Margaorito unload the body punches,, Thats funny too what happen to Cottos vicous body blows. Didnt exhist did they. I saw Margoritas and they decided the fight like I knew he would. HBO wanted Cotto to win they were all sad and torned up when there new cash cow fell. I bet they would gave cotto the last two rounds no matter how he did. They called the fight like Cotto was destined to win. This doest make Cotto some kind of champ it shows that hes a Judah. He cant fight Williams, Mar, And Maywether and maybe even cintron. He will get knoced out by all. The saddest part is Antonia never laded clean... Besides te hay makers when cotto had the blinders on. Very wink wrightish... I know a boxer called B HOP who can fight like this and look good. Would have no problem getting away from slow ass Antonio and throws clean hard punches. Cottos no hopkins just a wanna be.

MAN! What is with this hate towards Cotto?! He's still one heck of a fighter. He'll be back. Shoot, he'll probaly take a warm-up coming back and then beat down Paul Williams next year. It ain't over. What, one loss and you write someone's career off? Margartio was just the man that night. It's going to take another super human effort to reverse his loss to Paul Williams though. You see people, these kind of awesome fights are what we can have in the welterweight division with Mayweather gone. I told you all he don't want none. If Mayweather is so great how come he didn't defend his title against one actual welterweight and how come he ran from a high paying Oscar de la Hoya rematch? I think Paul Williams would outbox Mayweather and Margarito would just plain outbrawl him. Mayweather is a scared chump. When we have a new Welterweight champ in the division soon after the Williams/Margarito rematch, the fastest thing Mayweather will be throwing is excuses. Whoever wins this main match coming up, MAYWEATHER LOSES!!! HA,HA,HA!!!

Paul Williams will get beat down physically and mentally if he fights Cotto and Magarito (again). And Floyd would run thru all 3 of these boys. He's too quick and smart. The MAN retired because there is no competition. If he would have kept boxing, he would just be trying to prove a point to the boxing world and obviously that's not important to him because he's achieved what HE WANTED TO DO PERSONALLY IN THE SPORT. And he eventually will come out because one these WELTERWEIGHTS will go on ego trips and CALL HIM OUT off of IGNORANCE.

For one man it was a pilgrimage, the other a nightmare.
The goal of this video montage is to convey the emotions Cotto was feeling in the later rounds of the fight: scared, gassed, defeated, ashamed, sad, despair, fear, confusion, etc. This will evolve into more of an artistic video than a highlight reel.
It's a very one sided video, but that's the point. I'm not looking to make a highlight reel. I'm focusing solely on Cotto demise in this one fight. It's only about 25% done, but I'll upload what I have now and see what you guys have to say. Any feedback is appreciated.

Okay Theboyb901, I guess you just have it all figured out that noone fighting can beat Mayweather? What, says a few Mayweather rooster riders? I guess you believe that also that garbage Mayweather spit out saying he didn't bring his A game against Oscar? Oscar knows what he did wrong and the fight was close enough to need a rematch. They both fought their A game and Oscar still could have done better. Mayweather ran from a rematch for a reason. Brainwashed Mayweather lovin fools!

Props to Margarito on his impressive win. I've heard folks call Margarito the Terminator a few times, and even read one guy's comment who said that Margarito's bones are laced with an element called "Mexicanium".
At 147 this man is unbeatable, so it seems to me like he's found his niche. At 154 he was getting beaten by guys like Daniel Santos (a Puerto Rican fighter, BTW), but at 147 his chin seems capable of taking the strongest hitters (Cotto and Kermit Cintron were both known to be hard punchers) even at their best.
I loved this fight and hope Margarito will be the one to clean out this division. I'd hoped Cotto would be the unifier, but will settle for the hard hitting, steel jawed Mexican who has taken the long road to boxing's elite status. Can unified belts and a Ring title be too far off?
As for Cotto, what's next? I've got a feeling we'll see him again with a different trainer, but how does he get back on the road to stardom after such a devastating loss?
Finally, WTF was up with all the Puerto Rican Welterweight Alphabelt champions? Cotto and Cintron both lost belts to Margarito, and Carlos Quintana got knocked out in round 1 of his first title defense. Aside from Mayweather, the Boricuas owned welterweight a year ago. Now it seems we're the ones who are owned.

its funny how you mexicans get all hyped up cause your boy beat cotto first of all margarita could easly fight in a heavier weight class like trinidad they are the same height and same body style but when trinidad was that weight he never lost a fight. until he moved up in weight. margarito is a great puncher but garbage boxer his belt wont last long trust me. what happens when he moves up in weight??? can he take punchers like trinidad roy jones ECT. or is he going to stay in the same weight class and think he's the best.he's 5'11 and fighting at 147? come on now.what is ther to get excited about? and he had a 5-6 inch reach advantage! plus do your research mexicans vs puerto rican fighters puerto rico holds the belt baby we are still pound for pound the best. a little island, small population, with mad heart and big balls.

Old, But Not In The Way
"I did some researching. Hopkins is the oldest light heavy -- at 41 -- to ever win a respected sanctioning organization title belt. However, his hero, the late great, Archie "The Old Mongoose" Moore would have him beat, if Archie didn't lie about his age so much. Archie's boxing age when he won won his belt was 36. He official age -- listed on his passport -- was 39. But his actual age was 43, according to his mother, in 1953, and his aunt -- at the time 100 years old -- in 1991. I spoke to Archie in 1995 in San Diego, Ca., and he confirmed 43. I asked him why did he lie about his age, and he said age was held against a fighter more than color." ---TSS reader/citizen-journalist Radam likens Hopkins to Ole Archie
