Experts Weigh In: 13/15 Say Cotto Wins

By Robert Mladinich

It is impossible to not be excited about Saturday night’s welterweight showdown between Miguel Cotto, 32-0 (26 KOS), of Caguas, Puerto Rico, and Antonio Margarito, 36-5 (26 KOS), of Tijuana, Mexico.

The 27-year-old Cotto, who holds the WBA title, is not only one of the best fighters in the world, he is also one of the most exciting. He has already beaten a veritable who’s who of champions and contenders, but will face his toughest challenger against the taller and equally aggressive 30-year-old Margarito, the IBF titlist whose 5’11 height makes him four inches taller than Cotto.

(Margarito’s title is not on the line in this bout).

The fight is being held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, and will be televised on HBO Pay-Per-View. There has been a tremendous buzz on the streets and among boxing insiders about this terrific matchup, which will undoubtedly be a candidate for Fight of the Year, maybe even Fight of the Decade.

Here’s what a random list of 15 boxing insiders had to say:

Nick Charles, ShoBox commentator: “I’d love to see both guys get off the floor, but I think this fight will be more tactical than most people expect. I don’t know if Cotto is going to want to take too many chances with this guy. It’s so easy to root for both of these guys, but I have to go with Cotto winning a close and competitive decision.” Cotto W 12.

Steve Farhood, ShoBox commentator: “I like Cotto. I think Margarito will make him look better than ever. Every opponent Cotto has faced is placed in the role of a boxer. Not Margarito. He’ll push, and Cotto will shine. Cotto is a far better boxer. If he can outbox Shane Mosley, he’ll certainly do the same to Margarito. With all that said, given Margarito’s strength and determination, this can’t be anything less than a great fight.” Cotto W 12.

Gerry Cooney, former heavyweight title challenger: “Cotto is still on his way up, while Margarito might be on his way down. It’s really hard to beat Cotto unless you swarm him, but it’s tough to do that against him. Margarito’s good, but I think Cotto is a little younger and a little fresher and should stop Margarito around the eighth or ninth round.” Cotto by stoppage.

Iran Barkley, former multi-division champion: “Top Rank has put Cotto in a lot of tough fights, so he is really experienced at a young age. There is going to be a lot of give and take, but Cotto will stop Margarito. For such a young guy, he’s already seen a lot and is a great fighter.” Cotto by stoppage.

Bobby Cassidy Sr., perennial light heavyweight contender in the 1970s: “I like Margarito by KO. He’s a really vicious fighter, who reminds me of a young Roberto Duran. What he did to Kermit Cintron (twice) was unbelievable. Cotto could outbox him, but Margarito is such a workman and he’s very busy inside. Margarito is a 2 1⁄2 -1 underdog. That’s unbelievable to me. I say he stops Cotto in the middle rounds.” Margarito by stoppage.

James Moore, Irish junior middleweight prospect: “Joshua Clottey did really well against Margarito for about four rounds until he injured himself. He showed that he can be outboxed. I think that there will be a lot of big bombs thrown, but Cotto will score a knockout around the eighth round.”  Cotto by stoppage

Don Elbaum, boxing promoter, manager, dinosaur: “Wow, what a fight! Both guys will look like a million dollars for as long as it lasts. The word great is so overused today, but Cotto is a great fighter. He would be great in any era. He might stop Margarito in the first round or with 11 seconds left in the fight, but I think he will stop him. Then I’d love to see Cotto vs. De La Hoya in Yankee Stadium before it closes. They’d sell that place out.” Cotto by stoppage.

Bruce Silverglade, owner of Gleason’s Gym in Brooklyn, New York: “It’s a great fight that I can’t wait to see. It will be tough for Cotto for a while, but I expect him to wear Margarito down and stop him around the seventh round.” Cotto by stoppage.

Sean Sullivan, Editor-in-Chief of Boxing Digest magazine: “Cotto has more tools at his disposal than Margarito does. He can turn the fight from a brawl to a boxing match whenever he wants. Cotto has shown ability to battle back from adversity, but Margarito is the biggest opponent he has ever faced. Cotto is at the top of his game, and just does not seem ready to be beaten.” Cotto by stoppage.

Teddy B. Blackburn: “It is hard to see Cotto getting beat at this stage of his career. He’s too strong and aggressive for almost anyone. I expect him to steamroll Margarito and stop him around 2:30 of the third round.”  Cotto by stoppage

Jack Hirsch, British Boxing News: “Margarito should be able to withstand Cotto’s attack and outlast him. He is too big and strong for Cotto, and should score a late round stoppage.”  Margarito by stoppage.

Calvin Brock, former heavyweight title challenger: “Margarito takes a good punch, but Cotto has faster hands and can box when he has to. Margarito is much more straightforward and one-dimensional. Cotto is the total package, so he should win a decision.” Cotto W 12.

Mike Silver, noted boxing historian: “Margarito is a tough guy, but Cotto has shown spurts of greatness on many occasions. His great body attack is unique among fighters today. Margarito is very good, but Cotto is better. He will show that again in this fight by stopping Cotto in the late rounds.”  Cotto by stoppage.

Randy Gordon, former New York State boxing commissioner: “The greatness of Cotto will come out in this fight. His hand speed, accurate combinations and combination punching will rise to a new level. He’ll get hit and he might get hurt, but he will win a decision in a hard fought and competitive battle.”  Cotto W 12.

Bob Mladinich, TSS: “I can’t imagine a better matchup at any fight. Both of these guys generate excitement. A solid argument could be made for either guy, but it is hard not to lean toward Cotto. He just seems to do everything well. He is a literal fighting machine and has an iron will to boot. He is truly a fighter for the ages.” Cotto W 12.

Danny:  All you people read and listen to the real pro's. 13 to 15, like I have been saying all along. The man with the better skills will win, not the taller man, not the one who throws more punches, Cotto is much more stronger than Margarito by a landslide, and he's accurate with his punches. When is the last time Margarito had a one punch one round KO? Unless it was against a bum I dont think ever. Why because he's not accurate, he just throws to see what will land and Cotto will move, jab and attack the long lenky hunched over body of Margarito until he gives up. Then bring on who ever!!!!!

carlos:  AM has been pretty underestimated and misjudged in this bout, but he will gonna show them all wrong at the end......but he 'll have to beat MC via KO or else he will lose if it will go to scorecards for boxing is a business and MC sells while AM don't.....
Saturday Jul 26, 2008 06:26:39 AM
aaron, uk:  CAN'T WAIT!!! So hard to choose a winner. If Cotto boxes smart throwing crisp straight shots through Margaritos looping shots it will be an awful night for Margarito but what we can all look forward to tonight is seeing if Cotto's chin has really improved up at welter. Hopefully not because iv'e got £150 on Margarito between round 10 and 12.

Radam G, keeping a very low profile:  The two who voted for Margarito are hoping and hating. Cotto wins easy in a not-so-FOTY effort. I am betting a bundle on it. Holla!

pete Steward:  Cotto's chin has been checked by Judah and Mosley among others and has barely passed Margarito will CRUSH IT. Margarito in 7.
Saturday Jul 26, 2008 01:33:27 PM
Isaiah:  It is on man!!! THIS IS A WAR!!! The kind of two REAL warriors that Mayweather wishes he could be. Who wants it more is excatly what it comes down to. In the end , Cotto will prevail!!! I pick Cotto stopping Margarito by 11th round Ko. Cotto is not ready yet to find out what it's like to lose. Some say this is his biggest challenge, but I'm going to have to say it was Shane Mosley.
Saturday Jul 26, 2008 01:41:19 PM
aaron, uk:  Radam, im not hating, Cotto is my second favourite fighter and in my opinion one of the most exciting fighters in the world. If he wins tonight and against Oscar, for me hes pound for pound #1 in Mayweathers absence.

pete:  Cotto by KO. He is a deceptive and confusing style and he's too tough.

Victor, USA:  Cotto is a great Champion, but beating an old decaying Shane Mosley or inconsitent Zab Judah does not say much. He's never fought a figther like Margarito. Expect the surprise by Round 10.

Eastar:  OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Cooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooottooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!! Bring back the real p4p champ "Money May" HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!

aaron, uk:  Great fight, and more importantly I won big $$$. Nobody should be embarrassed about picking Cotto, not everyone's as blessed as me :) but on a serious note ive not enjoyed a fight like that in a long time. Great fight for boxin.

Scot Harwood:  A good big man always beats a good little man unless the little man is very, very good. Sorry about the bank account Radam, but remember these words, it's a boxing truism for those in the know.

andy from newcastle:  Repost. Don't know where to post this. Who's reading what? Margarito was ahead on two cards wasn't he? difficult to hear in the pub with all the noise. I had Cotto winning the fight on points just, but clearly losing on momentum. Cotto's skill level was absolutely phenomenal. His movement and accuracy in the face of that torrent of violence and will from Margarito was stunning. Cotto landed punches that would have floored any other opponent, and boxed as well as anybody out there including Mayweather. The problem was, Margarito took absolutely everything like his head was filled with lead, and fired back so many punches that their toll was going to have the effect it eventually had. Cotto sensibly took the knee twice, and his corner sensitively took the action best for the fighter and stopped it. Cotto did not give up, he was simply beaten up by the toughest SOB on the planet after himself handing out what would have been a beating to any other fighter. The glorious thing for fans and fighters alike, is that they were prepared to do it for us, neither thought it was going to be easy. Floyd may be more skilled than any other fighter around (though after this fight from Cotto I would question that), but for delivering what they get paid to deliver, Cotto, Margarito, Vazquez, Marquez, Pacquaio, are streets above. Don Puto, hold your head high man. Your boy showed more heart, skill and warrior fortitude than most any fighter out there today. He would have stopped anybody out there apart from Margarito. And to any Mexican fans out there, you have a champion who will not be beaten again easily. Well done. An amazing fight, matching Vazquez Marquez III for FOTY so far. Manny Toni anybody? Toonoy

andy from newcastle:  Repost. Mike, Rudy, Salty (real or otherwise). Kudos to y'all for being prepared to put your necks on the line, I wasn't, and like Yuvie really couldn't call it. As it was, it was only the fact (now confirmed) that Margarito is the toughest SOB on the planet that stopped him being KO'd by the best (now confirmed) boxer on the planet, Cotto. Credit to him, he's a real Mexican warrior, and credit to Cotto for boxing the fight of his life-and still losing. He would have beaten absolutely everyone else with that performance tonight. Toonoy

Arturo:  You are right about Cotto , he showed tremendoes boxing skills but that is not enough to slow down Margarito. I didn't see Margarito's legs weaken during the entire fight.I knew this would be a big test for Cotto and even though he lost he is still a great fighter.I think if a rematch would happen the same result might also cause Cotto is clearly a better boxer but Margarito's heart, chin , and determination amazed the hell out of all of us
Saturday Jul 26, 2008 11:25:06 PM
andy from newcastle:  Yuvie, I really think you need to be congratulated for your spot on two way vision of how the fight could go. It was a well chosen Quote of Note from TSS. Clearly you should rely on both your head and your heart. Respect. Toonoy

andy from newcastle:  Repost. Came across this on espn from justinf, which although I don't necessarily agree with his thoughts on Mayweather beating both Cotto and Margarito, I was impressed with his take on tonight's fight. Here it is. quote "As a boxer myself I have to say that it was a heck of a fight. This fight proves that Cotto was not overrated and possesses all of the skills attributed to him and that Margarito has been underrated by boxing analysist for a long time. This is why I love boxing. In what other sports you see someone like Cotto with better boxing skills, faster hands and feet, harder punches and still loose to someone like Margarito who has the bigger heart, chin and desire. I left stagmina out becuase I belive both fighters are equal in that category. having said that, I believe that either men would lose to mayweather in a decision not because mayweather is bigger and or stronger but because of his boxing skills and tremendous speed. Simply put, Mayweather would never stand toe to toe to exchange with these men the way they did tonight or else he would loose. Last, i believe that even though, margarito won tonight, Cotto would do much better against Mayweather because of his boxing skills and superior speed in compare to margarito. Margarito is much slower and does not have Cotto's boxing skills, both of which are needed if you are to have a chance against mayweather. Margarito won tonight becuase Cotto was willing to stop and exchange with him which eventually worn him out and Mayweather would never do that. " Come join us on TSS justinf, we need insightful fans like you. Toonoy

Angie And Goody...23 Years Later
Twenty three years later after they seconded Marvin Hagler and Ray Leonard in Las Vegas, Goody Petronelli and Angelo Dundee crossed paths again. This time, it was at Foxwoods. Photo/friend of TSS "The Iceman" John Scully reports there were only pleasantries exchanged. Goody didn't debate the split decision victory enjoyed by Leonard, which to this day Hagler disputes.
