Cotto arrives in Vegas. Will Margarito prove too tough a nut to crack, or can the relentless Puerto Rican break down the body and willpower of the Mexican?

This Won't Be "Dancing With The Stars"

By Ron Borges

With the temporary retirement of Floyd Mayweather, Jr. it became fashionable to bemoan the continually eroding state of prize fighting once again. Long ago this became a popular pastime of traditional sports editors, whose product is not-so-slowly dying on the vine and on the newsstand itself, as well as others who know little about the sport yet continue to predict its extinction when in fact things have been improving for the past several years.

That this renaissance has escaped traditional newspapers is one of many examples of why that business, which remains my first love, is slowly becoming extinct itself. As they were with the rise of the internet, newspapers sit behind the story these days instead of getting ahead of it. While they try to bury boxing by ignoring it, the fact is the temporary retirement of Floyd Mayweather (who will soon enough be doing his version of Brett Favre, only with more expletives and fewer tears) actually opened up the welterweight division to new possibilities, more energy and, frankly, the making of the best fight the division could have hoped for.

That fight will arrive with great anticipation this weekend in Las Vegas when Puerto Rico’s undefeated Miguel Cotto and Mexico’s Braveheart, Antonio Margarito, square off in what figures to be a candidate for Fight of the Year as well as being the best welterweight fight that could be made.

This would have been true even if Mayweather were still active because we’re talking about the best FIGHT, not the best HYPE or the highest GROSSING match. We’re talking only about the best fight in every meaning of that most dangerous word, which Cotto-Margarito has no choice but to become.

Where Mayweather had morphed from prize fighter into calculating businessman both inside and outside of the ring, the WBA and IBF champions have remained fighters first. They want to get paid as much as the next man – and in this case they will be – but they want just as much to prove to themselves and to the world who is the best fighter at 147 pounds.

It had become clear in the past several years that this was no longer of primary interest to Mayweather because his circle of advisors, sycophants and towel carriers had successfully convinced him it no longer had to be proven inside the ropes but could simply be loudly declared and thereafter be considered a given.

Once that began, actually facing down serious challengers in the way all the great fighters of the past had done – Ray Robinson, Ray Leonard, Muhammad Ali, Henry Armstrong, Roberto Duran, Marvin Hagler and on and on – was no longer of much interest to Floyd, nor did it seem particularly necessary to him.

This is no effort to argue that Mayweather dodged anyone, even though that’s what the people around Cotto believe. It is simply to argue that a Mayweather-Cotto unification fight was not on the horizon for a guy who, since winning welterweight titles from Zab Judah and Carlos Baldomir, forgot to fight any welterweights.

While legitimate opponents like Cotto, Margarito and Paul Williams languished waiting for him, Mayweather chose to fight a super welterweight who has lost three of his last six fights (Oscar De La Hoya) and a blown up junior welterweight (Ricky Hatton) who had already proven he was not effective at the higher weight when he was awarded a debatable decision against light-hitting Luis Collazo and quickly returned to sparring at 140 pounds.

To be fair, these were notorious B.I.G. fights, as in some of the biggest grossing numbers in the sport. What they were not were real tests of Mayweather’s ability to survive in one of boxing’s most storied divisions.

Even at that, his win over De La Hoya is highly debatable and his knockout of Hatton only proved that pudgy 5-6 guys who drink too much will never be much of a problem for Mayweather. What neither fight proved is what would happen if he was in there with a guy who has the nerve, skills and inclination to fight with the grinding style of a relentless wrecking ball, as Cotto does.

Emanuel Steward, who is a great admirer of Mayweather, said often he did not believe Floyd wanted any part of Cotto because it was simply too much of a risk to all that he had built up. While Mayweather’s supporters will dismiss such a thought out of hand consider these facts: Floyd went the distance with Judah, Cotto stopped him; Floyd went the distance with DeMarcus Corley, Cotto stopped him; Floyd never faced Shane Mosley, Cotto gave him a 12-round beating.

Who can know but Mayweather what his reasoning was for not accepting challenges from Cotto and Margarito but if Steward’s suspicions are true it’s a sad commentary on a guy who has claimed he was the new Sugar Ray (fill-in-the-blank depending on your age).

Either Sugar (Robinson or Leonard because one assumes Mayweather was never referring to Seales) would have faced Cotto, as Robinson did everyone you can think of and Leonard did Hearns, Hagler and Duran. The latter match is what seems likely to be the best definition of Cotto-Mayweather and they split their two meaningful confrontations. Perhaps Mayweather remembered that and said, “No mas.’ Perhaps not, but it will take more time to ever know, although in the end it seems logical to assume he’ll come back and face the winner.

Cotto-Margarito is a fight of a different type than Leonard-Duran or what a fight between either of them and Mayweather figured to become. It will be more compelling than even Cotto-Mayweather because it has more of the properties that made Hagler-Hearns eight of the most exciting minutes in boxing history.

Margarito is all about forward motion. He attacks in a whirlwind style, throwing punches as often as time will allow and doing a lot of damage in the process. The one time he seemed to abandon that in recent years cost him his WBO title to Williams but he mended his ways and soon after assaulted then IBF champion Kermit Cintron, knocking him out for the second time to reclaim a portion of the welterweight title.

Cotto, meanwhile, is a more patient but no less lethal assassin. He beats men down in the way Julio Cesar Chavez once did, assaulting them round after painful round until they implode and simply collapse from the weight of the damage. He has, unlike Mayweather, been forced to prove his worth in hard moments as well, having been knocked down and gotten up to win and been left bloody and woozy, and still triumphed.

That Mayweather has avoided those tests is evidence of his skills and is not meant to imply a weakness on his part because years ago at Cobo Hall in Detroit I saw him hold up from repeated assaults from relentless Emanuel Augustus and fight back until he stopped him in the ninth round of a 10-round bout. It is only meant to remind that Cotto has proven both his willingness and his ability to walk through fire and still win, while Mayweather has yet to spend much time in that hot cauldron where the truth is revealed.

That is why, in the end, Cotto will beat Antonio Margarito and elevate himself to his rightful status as the best welterweight in the world if not the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. He will, very likely, face difficult moments before his hand is raised, moments Floyd Mayweather, Jr. seemed disinclined to face most recently, but he will survive and triumph.

Margarito will attack and while Cotto will counter him he will also stand and fight at some point in a way Mayweather not only never would have, but probably will think is foolhardy. Mayweather is a consummate boxer with physical skills and tactical advantages that are admirable. Sugar Ray Leonard and Sugar Ray Robinson had the same skills but they had something more. They were fighters, too.

Leonard and Robinson were guys who wanted to know what Antonio Margarito and Miguel Cotto are willing to find out. They wanted to know who was best in a sport where that can only be determined in one way. By fighting. They assumed the same things Floyd Mayweather, Jr. did about themselves but they were also willing to take the risk of proving it.

That Cotto and Margarito share those same feelings is a blessing to the sport of boxing and it’s fans. It’s also why the two of them agreed to meet this weekend at the MGM Grand Garden Arena to engage in the best welterweight FIGHT that could be made knowing that that is what it will be for as long as it lasts – a fight, not dancing with the stars.

In the end, that’s still what sells best in boxing.

Armando Martinez:  Cotto will have to go through HELL and back quite a few times to beat Margarito. This is the best fight that can be made, thank God for Floyd's retierment!!!! BTW, I think Margarito TKO 11 in an instant classic.

Mike:  Interesting comparison, the decline of the newspaper business and the supposed decline of the thing they continually write eulogies for: the fightin' business. Somehow i get the feeling that boxing is going to be the one that survives longer.

Isaiah:  You tell them Mr. Borges. Mayweather doesn't anything to do with Cotto and Margarito and everyone knows it. This fight will be a severe test for both fighters. Cotto and Margarito, either one could win. Cotto will win at all costs, though. Everyone better believe that. Cotto wins by late round Ko.

rudy:  Margarito KO 7, too much firepower from the tough Mexicano. Tijuana Cabrones!!!

Chi-Town O:  Once Margarito test's Coto's Chin well see who will win this fight. Looking at past fights we can see that Tony has a granite chin and does not fall, once Cotto's chin gets checked we often see him wobble and or fall at times. So how the heck do you see Cotto winning this fight? I have some money ridding on Margarito and boy will he be making me money on Saturday night! Margarito by Knock Out by the 9th round!

PR BOX:  THE BEST ARGUMENT ON THIS STORY WAS :::: "Sugar Ray Leonard and Sugar Ray Robinson had the same skills but they had something more. They were fighters, too." :::: While Floyd Mayweather doesn't want to dance with the Lions right now, the truth is he'll have no choice but to fight in the future FOR HIS LEGACY. He is getting too much pressure from the media and not the respect he craves for or expected. His Ego will be his worst enemy and that will bring him back.

sweetscientist:  I agree that Mayweather should have fought Cotto and other top welters...but your assesment of common opponents and how they faired is only half truths and biased opinion(very popular for boxing writers these days, especially when referring to Mayweather). You neglected to mention Floyd battered a prime Corley(knocking him down several times in a fight that should have been stopped) while it was Corley who damn near Ko'd Cotto( A premature hometown stoppage that even Larry Merchant denounced as unfair against Corley!) Cotto gave Mosley a 12 round beating???? What fight were you watching Ron? Mosley was the aggressor in a fight that was up for grabs until the very end. Way to many writers have a personal axe to grind against Mayweather, and theres plenty to be critical of, but you guys go to far and start making stuff up to the point that its embarrassing.

Ron Borges:  Hi everyone! Look guys the truth is that I'm writing this article because like donputo69, Anony, and all the Cotto fans I just CAN'T STOP talking about Floyd Mayweather jr. He's the best, and he's ALWAYS on my mind. You guys ever heard of Ray Charles's song "Georgia on my Mind"? Well, that's how I feel about Floyd Mayweather: ♫I'm say Floyd-Floyd- A song of you-Comes as sweet and clear-As moonlight through the pines♫ ♫Other arms reach out to me-Other eyes smile tenderly-Still in peaceful dreams I see-The Titles come back to you ♫ -♫I said Floyd,-Ooh Floyd, no peace I find-Just an old sweet song-Keeps Floyd Mayweather jr. on my mind♫ (sighs) That’s how I feel guys. That’s why I mentioned Floyd more than Cotto in this article, the man always STEALS the show. He’s the boxer everyone always talk about and I bet he’s the one everyone of us is gonna have in mind when we see this fight. Well, got to get back to my writings, have keep on writing about the best P4P ‘Pretty Boy’ Floyd. See ya later everyone….remember: ♫I'm say Floyd-Floyd, Just an old sweet song Keeps Floyd Mayweather jr. on my mind♫ (sighs) Oh......

Eastar:  Bore-ges is at it again. You can tell he doesn't sleep at night, he just stays up thinking about how to down-play Mayweathers greatness. Floyd's been retired for how long now? But all you hear is Floyd, FLoyd ,Floyd.... and....Sugar Ray Robinson would have did this, and Sugar Ray Leonard would have did that. Stop crying you big baby!!!LOL. If Mayweathers is not great, why do you keep comparing him to great fighters still? And as far as Cotto's camp claiming Floyd's ducking their man, well, Paul Williams was looking for the Cotto fight, and HIS camp is claiming Cotto is ducking him. Holla. Hahaha.

The REAL Salt lover:  'Dancing with the Stars' was just a dancing competition you ignorant fool. That doesn't vahe to do anything with boxing. What? A boxer don't have a right to compete in anything if he wants to? Geez....... Any how, I'm going for Antonio Margarito in this one. Zab Judah and Mosley were able to hurt Cotto (Yes, at 147 division), and they both combined don't have 1/2 of power Margarito has. Plus, stamina is definitely gonna be a factor in this fight, and that's another advantage for the Tijuana man. Cotto's stamina's good, but not great. Plus, people talk about his skills and what not, but he 's no boxing wizard like Floyd, Jones, Whitaker and those guys who were almosty impossible to hit. He can get hit, and if Margarito get his hands on him, it's bye-bye for the Cotto hype. Margarito will Win this one. Peace.
Tuesday Jul 22, 2008 10:02:36 AM
Erudite:  Judah and Mosley notwithstanding, Margarito represents Cotto's biggest challenge to date. The reason that Margarito is a bigger challenge than the aforementioned opponents and all previous opponents is that his brings some new, if not stronger factors into this fight. The conundrum that is Margarito introduces fervent national pride, hunger for recognition, volume/power attack, and deceptive movement. In many respects he is like a taller version of Cotto. Yes, I stipulate that Cotto is a better body puncher but with respects to heart, firepower and overall tenacity they are mirror images. Additional Margarito has lost and losing seems to have added a new dimension; he's a smarter fighter for it. This fight is analogous to Hagler vs Hearns due to the fighters more than the potential action. By comparison Cotto is more like Hagler: the shorter opponent, a converted southpaw and a vicious body puncher who wins by virtue of sheer punishment. Cotto shares these Hagler-like attributes and more. Margarito is more comparable to Hearns: taller and a vicious boxer-puncher. I see Cotto with an advantage assuming he take this to an inside fight. His body punching and ability to switch between southpaw and orthodox is a definite advantage. He head will also be a factor as he, being the shorter man will be positioned lower than Margarito. Conversely, Margarito should capitalize on his height and reach to keep Cotto at the end of his jab and set up a SD win. Unfortunately it’s been tried before and sooner or later Cotto makes his way in and the fight turns at that point. ……. My take on the fight: rough, dirty fight with plenty of head-butts and low blows – Margarito dominates the early rounds – Cotto bridges the gap by the 4th round and begins to take control – Margarito is severely cut over his left eye and the contest is stopped before the 10th round. Cotto wins by TKO. Anyway that is how I would write it if I were authoring this real-life screenplay.

JoeC:  Excellent piece
Tuesday Jul 22, 2008 10:25:23 AM
Mo Boxing:  I agree with the piece. News papers are dead. Cotto's jab will win against Tony. He'll jab his face off, just like the net is destroying news papers.

Tuesday Jul 22, 2008 11:25:36 AM
Anony:  Well, Mr. Borges gave us a lecture on "why we hate Floyd so much" and I will add that WE JUST LOVE TO HATE HIM. He is the one boxer you want to see knocked down, blood in his mouth and apoligizing for his stupid comments. BUT LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING. He won't be back. The way the welterweight division is playing, even Williams is a great threath to Floyd because of his reah and height. So... he is not stupid and he will stay retire. Now Cotto and Margarito... THAT IS A FIGHT. That's the one we all are going to tune in and feel nervous in each round.. the one that will make my beer taste better than ever... the one that calls the real boxing fan in us. This fight doesn't have any other outcome than to be a brawl. Margarito's chances rely on pressure and Cotto's chances rely on boxing, but Margarito is not Shane and Cotto knows he needs to win points. I don't think Margarito wil be knocked down while I fear for Cotto's chin BUT NOT HIS ABILITIES, he proved that in Mosley's fight. So... I have a split decision in Cotto's favor or a Margarito knock out on Cotto. Hoping Papa Dios for the first one. IF FLOYD MAYWEATHER IS READING THIS, I WILL LIKE TO CALL YOU A CHICKEN IN YOUR FACE... YOU JUST CAN'T FIGHT THESE GUYS. THEY WILL RIP THAT GIRLY DEFFENSE OF YOURS. SO STAY OUT OF THE GAME, TOO HARD FOR YOU WHO ALWAYS LIKED IT EASY AND PROVED NOTHING. THAT'S THE TRUTH YOU DON'T WANT TO HEAR BUT EVERYBODY IS WRITING ABOUT.
Tuesday Jul 22, 2008 12:06:27 PM
donputo69:  hey salty cracker...look at the ending results....cotto ko zab...and cotto UNANIMAOUS DECISION over mosley....that was 2 guys that was "suposed to knockout" cotto?....right?....ooohhhh ok....i rest my case....let the hate begin.....holla back losers.....
Tuesday Jul 22, 2008 12:27:57 PM
bIG L :  Hey guys , I agree with sweetscientist thst way too many boxing writers have an axe to grind when it comes to mayweather and his style. Also i agree he should have fought cotto before retiring but all those other guys ,c'mon be serious ! As far Sugar ray is concerned he ducked Arron Prier for years and that fight never happened .He ducked and played with Hagler for years before fighting him .So , Floyed is not the only to not fight certain guys .I believe that if mayweather fought cotto ,mayweather would win because he is too fast elusive .Chew on that !
Tuesday Jul 22, 2008 12:30:28 PM
The REAL Salt lover::  don, I wasn't here before the Judah fight. You must've confused me with some else. No, don't rest your case, cuz you got me all wrong. I wasn't even here by that time.....Margarito will defeat Miguel Cotto this Saturday. Peace.

Radam G:  Wow! I go home for a month, and come back to the USA, and see that TSS Universe has turned into Alice-in-Wonderland like. Fightwriter RB, P4P you are the best fightwriter. Stick with it, and give up that song-business jive. You sounded more like a wounded bird or a failing comedian with, "Georgia On My Mind." Gosh, man, I best you are one terrible singer. Thanks for not sending the song over the website. It probably would have been, "This dude is murder my hearing, My ears have fled from my head, $hoot!" Money May is in secret workouts, and is watching and ready to knock out Cotto -- probably the easy winner of the bout come Sabado -- Saturday. Margarito is a force, but not quite a tornado, and definitely not a tomato. I'm too smart to even tease about that now, considering the whipping he put on Manny Steward-trained Cintron. Margarito won me over. But he throws too many wide punches to handle Cotto. Actually Margarito throws too many punches, PERIOD, to handle the likes of Cotto, Berto or Money May. This bout, come Saturday, will be a disappointment. It will not be close to FOTY. Cotto is going to bust Margarito up with uppercuts and hooks to the liver, and right hands and hook to the head. And Cotto is going to even go southpaw and rock, sock and pop Margarito dizzy. Styles make fights. And Cotto's sharp style is way too much for Margarito's wild, wide, banging, punching-off balance, pressure-cooking style. Forward pressure on Cotto is the formula to a serious beat down. After all, pressure is what makes a diamond. That Cotto diamond will be sparkling bright Saturday night. I'll be at the bout in my $300-dollar seat. Holla!

The REAL Salt lover:  Well, Radam. That's what you said about Alfonso Gomez supposedly whooping Cotto, and look what happened. And that's what you said about Lazcano beating Hatton and look what happened. And that's ALSO what you said about Quintana beating Williams and look what happened. I knew Williams was gon' destroy Quintana. I'm going for Margarito in this one. Many experts and fans, hoping for Cotto to try and overshadow Floyd Mayweather will get their heartsbroken when they hear Michaels Buffer announce Margarito's name. Peace.
Tuesday Jul 22, 2008 01:01:05 PM
rudy:  And after the fight you'll see that exact description in a police report, "Delusional Puerto Rican threatens to jump off the top of the MGM Grand building. Its been reported that the very feminine-looking male went completely out of his mind after seeing his idol Miguel Cotto get beat to a pulp by the Mexican from Tijuana, Antonio Margarito."

Radam G:  Thanks for the warning, donputo69! I think I will get an upgrade to the $700 seats, or maybe the $1,000-dollar ones. I'm not trying to get in a war with a crazy fan. I'm 5'7, 145lbs...no tattoos. I'm going to have my Pinoys posse with me and a few giant American Mexicans, Samoans, Whites and blacks. Ride the peace train, donputo69. (People are always wanting to kick my a$$ for my comments on TSS and other boxing sites.) Your man Cotto is going to kick butt this bout. I'm putting some of my fat moola on that. I expect to roll out of Vegas with fatty, deep pockets after Cotto wreck the force Margarito. Salt lover, on my island in the Philippines, in my dialect we say, "Yom asal, yom mga basal" -- "Somedays, it's honey, somedays, its onions." This is equal to saying, "Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose." Of course, you can name the few times, I was wrong. But I'm right about 25 times to one. I hoped for Gomez. I hoped Quintana. I hoped for Laczano. I'm not hoping for Cotto. Cotto is no Gomez, no Quintana and no Laczano. Neither is Margarito. Margarito can straightout fight, and will bring the diamond beast out of skilled Cotto, and Cotto will wreck him for it. Holla!

Arturo:  There will be storm chasers in Las Vegas this Saturday night. A tornado is predicted to hit the MGM Grand. No shelter will be provided to Cotto only a pair of gloves to fight back. Will the man from Caguas have the cojones to match a furious attack from the Tijuana Twister? Miguel better not run backwards as he did against Mosley , there is no shelter inside the ropes , ther is no way out but there is a way in. Brawl !!!

Danny:  I have one question for all you Margarito fans. How do you beat someone who has never been beaten? Its not known because it has not yet been written. Last time I looked, Margarito had 5 losses to Cotto's 0! Cotto on the other hand can look at any of the 5 losses and see how it will be done. Might I add all of his 5 losses have come against mediocre no name journey men such as Daniel Santos, who has absolutely no boxing skills at all. One of them recently against Paul no experience Williams who broke into the sport about two maybe thee years ago..... When it comes to Cotto its Boxing then Power then more Boxing and then more Power and Margarito in all of his years of experience has yet to have fought such a well rounded off opponent, who posseses boxing skill speed and power, and if you think otherwize just ask Sugar Shane Mosley!

Eastar:  Hey, don, stop bragging about the purchase of your ticket for the "cheap" seats. 5'8' 235? your a lil fat boy ain't you? LOL!!!! I'm 5'11' 170 since where sizing each other up but.... Anyway, Cotto proves nothing by losing, I mean, winning this fight. Mar-Baritto has already lost 5 times in his career, and his one shot at the spotlight he lost to Williams. This will not be fight of the year, but snooze fest of the year is more like it. Holla.

BIGFREDO76:  For all the Cotto nuthuggers please stand from ure current position of being on ure knees. If i was putorican i would be comparing cotto to Trinidad becuz my man Trinidad met his challengers and moved on 140,147,154,160.Now when will cotto do that?I dont think he has the balls to go up hes to comfortable at 147 all the great fighters have moved up many weight classes in fact so many it would take me time to mention all their names. So no names to be mentioned the only i care to hear are "please leave the building a tornado just landed"and it hit like a freight train. You may now resume your postion ,just bite it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Radam G:  Wow! donputo69, I'm not taking a chance to sit by you. Yea! I guess I'm pulling a Mayweather. It is all business, first. All about safety and money. I'm going to make my money off your boy Cotto. I'm betting that he win by late stoppage or runaway decision. But I'm also betting on a draw, because three blind mice may just rob him. The judges in Vegas are notrious for pulling fast ones. And, man, you are a heavyweight. I'm not trying to mess with a heavy in some $300 seats. Come down to my weight and I may sit by you and stare you down. Otherwise, I'm keeping my Pinoy a$$ and good looks SAFE in the $1,000 section. I've learned a lot from Pretty Boy Floyd aka Money May. He'll be at the fight. So will the new P4P King. Holla!

JuanM:  Once again guys.....Cotto has a VERY suspect chin...He has been dropped by much lesser opponents....Margarito is a very heavy handed fighter with a VERY strong chin. I don't see Cotto holding up to Margaritos punching power and I see Margarito walking through anything Cotto throws at him....I will say that Cotto is a much more technical fighter, but that will not be enough in this fight, unless he somehow breaks down Margarito to the body. If he does that he may win in the latter rounds. I just don't see it happening....Margarito TKO 7.
Wednesday Jul 23, 2008 11:41:39 AM
BIGFREDO76:  Tragalaga69 you live with mommy and of course dont know who ure daddy was.I envy people that actually go to vegas I can state anything I want Im going to stay at the Luxor there ....who cares i could make up a whole vacation and write about but you have to say maybe some will believe it ,but not here son just like you believe your gonna see ure daddy soon.Stay of welfare son,,,oooops I feel like a father figure already son.Cotto they warn people about hurricanes cuz they time to develope but tornado will give you no warning so dont say you werent warned.
Wednesday Jul 23, 2008 12:49:36 PM
Theboyb901:  The answer of this question is the winner of the fight....WHO HAS THE BETTER CHIN? Because neither one of them have the athletic ability to bounce around and pot shot...and that's how FLOYD would beat them. And he'll come back and beat Cotto!
Wednesday Jul 23, 2008 01:38:06 PM
donputo69:  lmfaoooooo....hey salty cracker....you say my name is horrible?...lmfaooooo...wtf is a salt lover?....your name sounds worst then bigpendeja76 and easter bunny combine...lmfaoooo....and who's you to tell me to stop writing in spanish?...listen SUSIA...im gonna be here writing spanish hasta que me de las ganas.....so $tfu...better yet....go suck a monkey's nipple.....lmfaoooooo.....just remember one thing donputo haters....WHEN I ROCK, YA JOCK.....holla back losers....

You sayin’ me to suck a monkey’s nipple huh? Well, like FLOYD MAYWEATHER IS THE LEGEND would've say, why you better suck Anony’s? LOL!!!!!!!!.....Next time you answer me, answer immediately. andy from newcastle:  Leave you guys alone for five minutes and see what you get up to? Behave. It started off like a singles column, "5'8" NS, GSH, seeks...." and ended up like Jerry bleedin' Springer. Bottom line, we're all winners, apart from Eastar. How could anybody sane and in love with boxing, think Saturday is going to be a snore fest? He's got to be the guru Tuggin Ma Puddin from Love Guru, and having us all on. I have been a fan of Cotto since he turned pro, but I really think Margarito has the Mexican warrior fortitude and mentality to draw Miguel into places he shouldn't go. Like Yuvie, I can't decide which way it will go, but I know it will push Vasquez Marquez III for FOTY. This is going to be special. Don and Radam, you are lucky that you will be able to tell your grandkids you were there, but you should also hunt each other out to share a beer as two of TSS world's most prolific commentators. How cool would that be? Hey maybe I should be a guru. Toonoy

streets:  you wanna know why Floyd never agreed to punish Cotto? Two words.....Bob Arum.
Wednesday Jul 23, 2008 08:07:15 PM
donputo69:  Cotto is gonna give margarito the beating of his life but margarito is gonna go out like a warrior fighting till he can't no more...Margarito is one dimensional fighter all he does is come forward and keep punching and cotto is a well rounded fighter he can fight convential and southpaw he can box and he can bang cotto will be to much for margarito.... time to go to bed...i have a long flight tomorrow....hey radam g...come see me....i'll be with my borachones at the mgm grand hotel...maybe we can hook up with some hooters from the strip...lmfaoooooo...holla back ladies...

Not Hip To The Hype
"Haye has said that without the hype, boxing is boring. This tells you something about him as a fighter and as a man. And maybe something about his low expectations of his own value as a fighter. Why isn't his skill good enough? Which audience is he trying to impress? When I watch fights, I watch the contest, the skill, the drama, the match-up. Screw the circus hype."---TSS reader Mortcola, giving thumbs down on David Haye and his pre-fight antics
