Biting The Hand That Fed
By Michael Woods
Some people are better at retirement than others.
Some folks find that they are happy when they step away from the 9-to-5 grind, and are able to fill their days taking pleasure in hobbies, housework and works of philanthropy. Others, usually males, anecdotal evidence shows, tend to drive their significant others batty, as they find themselves out of sorts with a vastly reduced daily structure and reason for being. They end up following their SOs around the house, critiquing their vaccuming skills, and generally proving themselves to be such nuisances that they spur their SOs to vocalize their frustration at their constant presence around the house, and spur threats of battery by vacuum cleaner and divorce.
Looks like Floyd Mayweather is more the latter sort of retiree than the former.
Now, I contemplated letting Floyd’s July 4th newsdump pass, without devoting any space on TSS to analyze the firework he lobbed at HBO’s announcers. But I could not do so. I could not let Floyd’s moronic, misguided, insulting remarks made to writer David Mayo pass without getting in my two cents.
In case you were busy with holiday goings-on, Mayweather blasted the HBO announce crew for their treatment of him, a man who has grossed eight or nine figures worth of purses and license fees as a result of the promotional push provided by employees of HBO.
"Jim Lampley, Larry Merchant, Emanuel Steward, they're always talking about the negative things in my life," Mayweather said to Mayo. "But I've seen Jim Lampley in the same strip club as me before. They always want to talk about me going to strip clubs, but they don't want to talk about that.”
Now, I have no clue about the clubgoing activities of Jim Lampley, and whether or not he has ever visited any establishment where dollars are tucked into garters, rather than deposited by the bucketload into bank accounts, and spent on luxury cars, and homes, and bets on athletic events. But Lampley is a commentator, he is paid to provide analysis of sporting events. He is not the show. He is a celebrity in a loose sense of the term, unlike Mayweather, who has been paid obscene sums of money to perform for our entertainment. Thus, Lampley’s post-work activities cannot and should not be scrutinized to the same extent as an entertainer like Mayweather, who is a public figure who benefits spectacularly from being in the public eye, and thus can expect his extracurricular activities to be focused upon by the loads and loads of persons who admire and revere him.
Mayweather kept at Lampley, who in early 2007 was accused by his then girlfriend of committing domestic abuse. Lampley’s case was widely covered, but the DAs decision not to charge him for abuse did not receive the same amount of coverage.
"He caught a court case himself, too,” the boxer said to Mayo. “But when they catch a case, all they do is take them off the air a couple weeks, then it's over."
Not sure what penalty Floyd would lobby for. Dismissal? Castration?
As I let these Mayweather M-80s sink in, I tried to fathom his motivation for this fusillade. Was he bored? Was he angry that Lampley and company were offering positive analysis on boxers still active in the arena, men like Kelly Pavlik and Manny Pacquiao, who exemplify throwback tendencies of old school warriors we all revere, who see their mission in the ring as an exercise in aggressive offense, rather than a showcase in ring generalship? Had he lost big dough on the Lakers/Celtics series, and was still salty over that?
Mayweather kept on lighting fuses, and tossing insults.
"Even a guy like Jim Lampley, he praises Kelly Pavlik -- who has won some good fights, he beat Jermain Taylor twice, we have to give him credit for that -- but they talk about Kelly Pavlik, a white fighter, like he's the second coming. Or they go crazy over Manny Pacquiao. But I'm a black fighter. Is it racial? Absolutely. They praise white fighters, they praise Hispanic fighters, whatever. But black fighters, they never praise.”
Mercy, when I saw this one, my eyes bugged out. Suffice to say that the NAACP is never going to take up the cause of Floyd, who has made himself mega-millions of dollars, despite, he maintains, being the victim of racism. The level of insult to people who actually bear the brunt of bigotry is stunning here. Taylor has received ample praise over the years on HBO, as has Bernard Hopkins, as has Winky Wright, as has Roy Jones, as has George Foreman, as has Lennox Lewis, who, not coincidentally, is employed by the same organization Floyd is smearing by accusing them of condoning racial bias.
Let me be the one to clue Floyd in here, as apparently his team of advisors have not been inclined to clue him in, or have been unsuccessful at doing so…the HBO analysts, and that goes for Lampley, Merchant, Steward, Kellerman and Lewis, typically are prone to give credit to boxers whose styles are in line with Pavlik and Pacquiao, over more defensively oriented fighters, like Mayweather. This is the only bias I can put my finger on regarding the gang at HBO, other than a bias for the suits who seem to be hell-bent on making money. Yup, the powers that be, which happen to include a black man, Kery Davis, who most of the day to day shots regarding boxing in his capacity as senior VP of sports, shockingly attempt to maximize their revenue, above any other singular aim. So, I didn’t happen to see any examples of bias, racial or otherwise, as HBO was throwing hundreds of thousands of dollars of advertising, and documentary infomercials, at the Mayweather/De La Hoya bout in the summer of 2007.
Again, I wondered what Mayweather was thinking when he lit the fuse on this race card explosive device. Was he thinking at all?
Was there any motivation behind it, or was he just a tad jealous that Pavlik and Pacquiao, two men who have shown warrior qualities inside the ring, and a humble demeanor outside the ring, were garnering praise that he felt was owed to him?
Does he truly see himself as a retired boxer, or merely one on hiatus, who should still be regarded as the P4P best, and all others should be afforded mere interim status until he chooses to make his inevitable reappearance to the sport?
Does he truly perceive racial bias, or is someone whispering incendiary fodder in his ear, trying to whip him into a frenzy to goad him into returning to the ring, so he will earn another oversized paycheck, and that whisperer can chip off a chunk for themselves? Mayweather leaves himself open to speculation on his motives when he lobs such inflammatory rhetoric., without providing concrete examples to bolster his argument.
"I've noticed it for a long time but I couldn't say anything because I had to do business with them,” he said to Mayo. “I'll still do business with them, but I'm done holding my tongue. I think HBO is great. But their announcers are full of (expletive)."
Okay, I get it, as long as you are making piles of dough you are willing to hold your tongue that the blatant mistreatment you have suffered through. Some would call that selling out, Floyd.
HBO televised 21 of Mayweather's last 22 fights, either on its main network or pay-per-view arm, Mayo pointed out, so Floyd has been holding his tongue for a long spell. Maybe it was easier for Floyd to hold his tongue because the suits okayed underwhelming foes like Henry Bruseles, and faded Sharmba Mitchell and Arturo Gatti in recent years.
You may recall, in 1999, that Mayweather accused HBO and then promoter Bob Arum of offering him a "slave contract" during negotiating sessions. That “slave contract” amounted to $12.5 million spread out over three years. Mayweather never retracted that statement, one blatantly insulting to anyone who was touched by the disgraceful, shameful practice of slavery, and my guess is that he will not take back this latest salvo.
"I'm happy. I feel clear. I feel free as a bird," he said to Mayo. "I feel good that I can finally speak out, and say the things I want to say."
Sad is the best word to sum up this latest Mayweather antic. I feel like such a flip flopper on the subject of Floyd; I thought he’d made strides in becoming a more mature man after he dispatched Ricky Hatton in December. But I do believe that he is too damaged, too compromised by his fragile ego and the emotional turmoil that his fractious upbringing has sentenced him to, for him to ever see the light, and count his blessings, and be the positive force, as an athlete and role model, that he could be.
Mind you, lest anyone out there dismiss my stance as a pro HBO suckup job, let me state clearly that I do not make the claim that HBO is faultless. I do not care for many of the matches the company has made in recent years, and believe that HBO-contracted fighters are too often allowed to engage in record and hype building faceoffs, with an eye towards facilitating pay-per-view bouts, rather than true tests of their skills. I was disappointed in the remarks put forth by HBO sports president Ross Greenburg, who seemed to rip a page from the John Kerry 2004 campaign handbook when he said, "Floyd is a tremendous athlete who gave his all to the sport. We have nothing but admiration for what he accomplished in the ring. His remarks regarding HBO broadcasters and executives are unfortunate and we could not disagree more. We will not engage in a debate. We are very disappointed in hearing about this. We wish him well in retirement."
Unfortunate?
We wish him well?
Ross, he just ripped you and yours two, maybe three new ones, and you wish him well?
We all know that HBO and Floyd will likely kiss and make up, for purposes of maximizing revenue accumulation when Floyd comes back. But I would have liked to see Ross and company tell him that they repudiate his remarks, strongly, and announce publicly that they have decided that they will no longer pursue a business arrangement with somebody who takes such offense at their methods and personnel. But that would mean leaving some money on the table, and that’s not bloody likely.
It’s all a bit sad, as stated before, but luckily, the savage science has been on an uptick recently, with as fighters like Pacquiao and Pavlik are manufacturing excitement, and pride, in the much maligned sphere of prizefighting. Hopefully Floyd will go on a lucky streak in his beat-the-bookie habit, or even better, latch on to some charitable cause that would benefit from his donations and charisma. Barring that, maybe he can spend some of his free time studying up on all the instances of true racial bias that are rampant in this nation and others, and perhaps do some good in improving the problems, rather than whining like a bored, petulant malcontent.

FINNALY THE TRUTH IS BEING TOLD IN MAYWEATHER'S FACE. AFTER THE AUTO-DESTRUCTION OF HIS IMAGE HE WILL HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO COME BACK AND FIGHT FOR RESPECT. I JUST WISH SOMEBODY PUT A ZIPPER IN HIS MOUTH WHEN IT HAPPENS. HE COULD BE A TREMENDOUS ATHLETE BUT HE NEVER GAINED THE RESPECT BECAUSE HE NEVER WAS EXCITING TO WATCH. PERIOD. THERE COULD BE FANS WHO LIKES HIS STYLE BUT REALITY IS HE NEVER SCORED A "HOME RUN" WITH DIE HARD BOXING FANS. AS I SAID BEFORE, JIM, LARRY AND EMMANUEL WATCHED MOST OF FLOYD'S FIGHT RINGSIDE WAITING FOR SOMETHING EXPLOSIVE TO HAPPEN BUT IT NEVER HAPPENED... THAT'S BORING AND NOW HE IS FRUSTRATED BECAUSE EVERY TIME HE WATCH ONE OF HIS OLD FIGHTS HE HEARS THE TRUTH COMING FROM HBO COMMENTATORS. IMAGINE THAT AS A LEGACY. HE IS HURT.

HBO's crew give credit where its due, yeah sometimes they do cheer on the so called 'house' fighter but never are they racist, B-Hop, Taylor, Forrest, Roy Jones, Mosley, etc. Look at slick boxers like Mijares, Montiel, Raheem in his win over Morales, Mares, Luevano,Casamayor, Paulie Malignaggi, Sweet Pea, and a ton more who are technical boxers and get props from the team at HBO. Just an ignorant rant for someone still looking to stay in the limelight....

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! TSS can't stop mentioning him. If it's not an article indirectively attacking him like that crap article "Finally a P4P King we can be proud of" (Which I have fun playing around with the haters, but the article is purely based on Floyd), it's a bulletin news of what Floyd is doing. LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Admit it TSS! Can't stop mentioning him. Like all the haters, still Floyd Mayweather is the fighter they all mention the most. Like I always say: When you don't like something or someone, DON'T PAY ATTENTION TO IT!!!!! You all could of stop writing stuff about him, and keep on with your suck ass P4P Fling, Oh! I mean King, LOL!!! But NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Floyd Mayweather STILL is running the show, and outside the ring!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! "ALL HAIL TO KING PACQUIAO!!!!,.....pssst but lets still talk about Floyd" HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah, that's my main man. 'Pretty Boy' the best P4P. The TRUE P4P, undefeated and unfazed. "Biting The Hand That Fed" is the wrong title for your article Mr. Woods. Floyd is not attacking HBO itself, he's criticizing HBO ANNOUNCERS, not the channel. And it's true, Merchant and Lampley, and even sometimes Stewart, cheer and praise their own fighters: De la Hoya, Pacquiao, etc. Everytime Floyd fought they criticize him and every time Larry Merchant gave the interview after the fight, he criticized Floyd, and as a hypocrite congratulate Floyd for his Victory. Floyd's right. However, they do NOT criticize him for being black. They praise black fighters too, but he's right that they biased their fighters.

Emmanuel Steward was yelling at Vladimir Klitzchko to knock Imbragimov out. (White)Vladimir was easily ahead on points and his (black) trainer Steward was yelling at him "get this guy outta here now!". That's a black HBO commentator who is the trainer of a white fighter. The idea is that defensive fighters may be interesting but they don't take chances to establish their superiority. They are not fun to watch. Thank goodness Floyd is gone. Thank goodness we have Andre Berto, Kelly Pavlik, and Manny P. It's not about race, it's about establishing superiority. Mayweather's split decision with De La Hoya was Mayweather's fault. He should have given boxing what it needed, a real champ. Good riddence.

I love how you guys act like because somebody pays black folk they cant be racist. Racist folk write checks everyday. And the other one the boss is black so it cant be racism. I wonder if it camt down to lamps or
But I do wonder how the experts of boxing have decided that Pac - Diaz ia what boxing needs. How pavlik - locket is what we need. What Boxing needs is to explain to people the different styles that boxing brings. It needs to highlight how well these guys work there craft.
I dont think it is racism but it is something because HBO always gets into the personal life of black fighters. They say bernard fights to slow but he did not fight slow when he was making all those defenses and he wasnt a featured fighter on HBO.
My problem with HBO is Oscar is allowed to call Mayweather a bad person when Oscar has as much or more dirt than mayweather in his closet. HBO never calls him on his crap. Oscar make hopkins fight him at 158, HBO doesnt mention it. He doesnt make weight versus Steve Forbes HBO bareley mentions it. He was originally going to were a picture of his son with Millie on his trunks, changes the trunks to have his other kids put on when the bogs start killing him for acting like he only has one child. He make mayweather were different gloves that he usually wears then blames him for not throwing more punches. Jermain Taylor was blasted for Fighting Ouma and Spinks but it is okay for Pavlik to fight Mora, but those same folk were blasting taylor for that fight.
HBO has shown itself to have a double standard and some may interpret it as racism.

If I can recall the Mayweather vs Dela Hoya fight, Mayweather came out as mexican and is it not an insult to all mexicans. But you didn't hear DLH accusing him of being racist. If he had such a problem with what was being said of him why didn't he show to everyone what can of fighter we all want to see and that is warrior like men who step in the ring. How many total punches does Mayweather throws a night? You can be a very skilled boxer but can also be aggressive at times, he never showed that.

FLOYD IS THE LEGEND ::: Dude, you are ruining the party again. This is nothing against radical blind fans like you. It is against Floyd the persona and the mouth that he has. Look well enough to what he just said. It is like me loving The Beatles after John Lennon said they were more famous than Jesus... if people didn't react to that (like it happened) then Jesus holy image could have been affected by the 'tolerant media and fans" forever. In this case Floyd is throwing "low blows" to our beloved sport so I don't care if he is like The Beatles to boxing, he needs to pay for his foul mouth. In this case he should wish the outcome will be like The Beatles which I doubt. Boxing fans will forever remember his words unless he put on the globes again and fight and finish what his mouth started. THEN WE MIGHT BE TOLERANT TO HIM. In the meantime, let him pay. He deserves the heat BIG TIME.

Floyd spews these remarks to make Floyd feel "relevant" He seems angry because the praise will never be enough to fill an ego that has no end. We all have been boxing fans for years & I remember numerous articles regarding Floyds awe inspiring talent. He was a great fighter, but I think Floyd him self is much too focused on the negative... He brings criticism upon him-self. It would be very easy for Floyd to become fan friendly if he chose to, but his mentality was always "safety first". I am a boxing fan, and have always purchased Floyd fights. He is a tremendous fighter. His fights were for the most part enjoyable, but are nothing like fights staged by Cotto, Margareto, Pac-Man and Pavlik, or numerous outer pugilists. Floyd is aggravated by the praise there fighters receive for their riveting performances. Press releases are all he has left.. Hopefully all the recent pent-up aggression will once again have a release in the ring... Hopefully the next version of Floyd will let his fists do the talking in the ring? I guess we will wait & see...

Floyd is a great fighter, but he is boring as hell to watch. He is definitely not a draw. Unlike Oscar, Manny Pacquiao, Kelly Pavlic, Barrera, Morales, Mike Tyson, B Hop , and all the great fighters, they put on a hell of a show! It's sad that Floyd has to bring up the race card when it's not even relavant to what the issue is. The issue is, he is plain BORING to watch. Yes, he is very good defensively, but no one wants to watch a defensive fight. People pay big money to see action and that he doesn't bring. Unlike Pacquiao, Barrera, Oscar, Tyson, and the others I've mentioned, Floyd's fights are mediocore. You watch a Pacquiao fight or Barrera fight, you will get your moneys worth. You won't feel like you've been robbed. When you watch Floyd's fights, you feel it was a total waste of $49.99. And to top it off, his personality sucks! He's very arrogant, loud mouth, all talk, but not action. You listen to Pavlik or Paquiao or Oscar, they never bad mouth anyone including their opponents, but they do all their talking in the ring. Floyd is a sad case. He will be bitter for the rest of his life. He will try to bring people down, and the sad part is, when all else fails, he will pull the RACE CARD which goes to show his ignorrance.

That's the mark of a great athlete. That even when your loooooooong gone, the world can never stop talking about you, and comparing other athletes to you. For instance, look at every promising basketball player who gets drafted to the NBA, are not most of them compared to Jordan. Is not the Heavyweight division still waiting fo the next Ali, or Tyson. As far as this particular article, Michael Woods, I smell a little jealousy in you. Ross Greenburg wishes the man well and you have a problem with that, because he makes millions of dollars? Just because a rich black fighter speaks his mind, it's unexceptable to wish him well, huh? No problem. A hater is going to be a hater. Sorry most of us don't tap dance when we feel mistreated, on any level. FLOYD IS A LEGEND no matter how much you try to bring him, or any other black athlete who speakes his mind down. Holla. P.S. Floyd made money off of HBO but how much did HBO make off of him? Hmmmm?

The bias that Floyd speaks of is a racial bias but it doesnt intend to be. Like Woods says, commentators and fans alike will praise the brawling, slugging, more entertaining fighters then the slick, counterpunching, defensive fighters because the brawlers make more exciting fights. Well as history shows us, who are the sluggers and who are the defensive fighters. The best black fighters (Ali, Leonard, Robinson, Jones Jr, Mayweather) tend to be the defensive, cerebral counterpunchers whose skills were so amazing that their fights were sometimes boring because they dominated. The best hispanic (Duran, Chavez, Morales, Barrera) and white (Marciano, Pavlik) tend to be more brawlers willing to get hit to deliver punches and thus make for more exciting fights so when they praise these fighters more then the defensive fighters, there is your race problem without trying to have one. Of course there are exceptions (Hagler, Hearns, Holyfield are brawlers while Klitschko and Maliggnagi are boxers) but its the truth. Floyd is a jerk and his comments were terribly put, but his point does have some validity to it even though its not intentional

Floyd is a gifted boxer, slick, smooth and quick. But he will never be able to earn the love and fan response from the legendary smooth and slick boxing legends like Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard who fought and risked their careers against the best and most brutal punchers in their respective divisions. Plain and simple this is about Floyd isn't it. Tell me this article does not talk about PBF, FMIT Legend I think these guys are starting to get to ya. And also HBO made him of who is now unfortunately he gives no type of appreciation what so ever. Floyd would never be Sugar Ray Robinson, but Muhammad Ali said that the reason most white people came to watch him was not because they loved his skills they wanted to see someone shut his mouth up. All of you guys that hate Floyd are basically jealous of him because he is the best in boxing. I do not like all of the stupid things he does and says. He has a very dysfunctional family. FMIT Legend, people mention Floyd because of the dumb $h!t he does outside of the ring, NO ONE is talking about his performances inside of the ring. And if they are, 99% of the time they are bashing him or questioning his career. HBO Announcers comment on the performances in the ring, if they suck or they dont like it - have the right to criticize it (for Floyd, that was usually the case) - or like I said before they give credit where is due and it has absolutely nothing to do with the color of their skin.

rudy, if a guy does some "dumb $h!t", then he's stupid. But if people talk about him, the peoples themselves ARE the stupid ones. An example I can give you, even tough a different sport but the same case: In baseball, when a crazy fan goes to the field, the announcers and the cameraman, do not pay attention to him because if they are, they'll be giving exactly what he wants. THE CONTROVERSY!!!! Floyd Mayweather is not about acceptance, questioning him, nor liking or hating him. Is about the CONTROVERSY he brings up. He wants people to keep him in their minds, mouths, and keyboards. And trust me: He's doing a HELL of a good job. He's not about acceptance, or about liking him, it's about CONTROVERSY.....#1pacfan, starting to get to me?????????/LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You never read my posted comments? Floyd mayweather is a fool.Probably the most disliked boxer in history. Its plain and clear that the guy is not a very happy person.Prime example of ego run rampant. So what if people are always talking about him,its the negative stuff that people talk about when it comes to floyd because thats the kind of person he is...negative.

FLOYD MAYWEATHER IS THE LEGEND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!::::
|
BINGO!!!!!!!! Arturo just hit the JACKPOT baby!!: The reason people HATE Floyd is because they want to see him LOSE!!! THAT'S why everybody criticize him. If Floyd comesback and defeats EVERBODY, still he's gonna get attacked. But if he comesback, and loses to Cotto, Williams or anybody (This is just an example, but I KNOW that ain't NEVER going to happen in a million years), then everybody's going to give him props like David "G.I. Joe" Diaz, that bum got wacked and everybody was paying their respects like ignorants to that BIG TIME LOSER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Man, finally someone tells the truth in here.............rudy, what's the point in that? It's not that he wants to be remembered only for his controversy. You sounding like he's never coming back. He is going to comeback, and the controversy is obviously for buys. People say he was very boring after DLH, but they bought the Hatton fight. People criticize him, but still they're talking about him. And when he comesback, he is still going to sell huge numbers in PPV. That's what this is all about. And YES, they remembered for that too. Ask Ali. And if performance is all about, then Floyd performs BETTER than anybody else. Yes, I know what you're thinking ("Floyd performs better????? The guy is boring!!!!!!") Remember, performance is NOT the same as ACTION. A guy like Floyd who almost impossible to get hit, performs better than a slugger, who KOs yes, but is slow, doesn't have skills, and gets hit couple times. Yeah, to the majority the slugger is more entertaining, but PERFORMANCE and ENTERTAINMENT are two VERY DIFFERENT things. So, you be careful who you say them. In my case, and the rest of THE TRUE BOXING FANS, not the phony ones, we LOOOOVE to see Floyd perform that impenetrable defense and that sweet science he greatly display. He's the best, no doubt about it. But if you don't like his style, that's OK. Not everybody appreciate the TRUE BOXING SKILLS in the ring anymore.

Wow! I was finally able to clearly read that piece, Editor MW. Geeewiiiiizzzzz! You came right out of the Woods and whacked Money May with some tall-tree-size sticks. (Now, I know where to find Big Foot. You put a Big Foot a$$ beatdown on him -- just kidding and lmao). Of course Money May is a little envious of Kelly "The Ghost" Pavlik and my homeboy "Supersonic" Manny "Asian Ice Man," aka "Pera Pac," aka "Hurt business Hurtlord," aka The New Greatest, aka anybody-who-step-in-front-of-him Assassin, aka "The Destroyer," aka Soon to be a five division title belt holder," aka "PacMan" Paaaaccccqqqquuuuiiiiaaaaoooooooo. But it's all good! Money May is just keeping himself relevant by playfully playing "the race card." (Some of my best friends do that -- just kidding and lmfao.) It is all about money, ain't a darn thing funny. Hypersensitive people need to get out of the hiiizzousse. I don't buy that Money May is finished with the pain game, aka big money game for the elite. He is just working up the anger of the haters and love of the fans, so they can get those butts in those seats and in front of those PPV sets. He will be back to clean up the big fish of the welters in 2009. I think and hope that person will be Cotto. Nevertheless, Money May may just use Paul Williams for a warm-up bout before whipping Cotto. Williams is still hype, and Money May will kayo him like David did Goliath. Holla!

I stop reading TSS once in awhile thinking that when I come back it won't be one article hating on Floyd. But, it never fails. Floyd is correct on every point except racism. I wont call it racism, but the HBO commentators are definetly biased. They're not racist towards black fighters, theyre biased against Floyd. You hear it and see it all the time. I dont know about Lampley, to me he seems the coolest out of all of them. As far as Merchant and Steward goes, you can watch any Floyd fight and hear they're little slick hating comments thats similiar to the hatred you'll post about Floyd and they praise other top fighters. Everybody praises Pacman and thats understandable. Everybody praises Pavlik which is ridiculous to me. His high ranks on th p4p list is obscurd. He should be about 8 p4p because he hasnt fought anyone, but Taylor and only defended his title once. Floyd isnt the most exciting fighter to watch, but hes the most skilled boxer to watch. If you are a true fan of the sweet science you would at least respect what he does in the ring.

Floyd's comments were tackless, unprofessional and ungrateful to the company who put him to where he was, without HBO boxing today is just a sport, Floyd should grow up and set follow the example of Pacman and the Ghost, very professional athletes, all business in the ring, and good mannered outside. Also they fight for the fans not just for themselves, making the sport rise to other sports, Floyd is just fighting to win, never taking risks. Like they say, "no gutts no glory" you have to take some risks for greatness. Floyd is far from the ranks of the all time greats, Sugar Ray, Hagler, Hearns, Ali, now, even the Pacman and the Ghost have surpassed him.

History always seem to repeat. People use to get upset about Muhammad Ali's remarks. They told him that he should be "graceful of the (sports) that has made him rich." Bull! Ali, just as Floyd Mayweather has done, made himself rich with his made skills. People, today, are sounding just like the great baseball player, Jackie Robinson, who was bad mouthing Ali for refusing to go to the Army and voicing that whites were bias against blacks, and even blacks are bias against themselves because of the system. I'm like Nuckle, I don't agree with Floyd about racism, but the heck if I don't agree with him when it comes to HBO biasness and negativism toward him. The only one who doesn't bad mouth PBF is Max Kellerman, which shocks me. Fo' sure!

Pedroza what's so sad is that you and that girl Anony, are all fooled by the promoters. Arum has all of you fooled. Like i said you don't know what made to order means I can see. Arum is the same promoter that had you guys thinking that Butterbean and Tye Fields was the real deal huh. Why because they were white. GET REAL!! That is about color. Bob Arum gave Dimitry Salita a million dollar signing bonus and had never seen him fight! Why? Because Salita is Jewish. So don't tell me color has nothing to do with it.

He's like a girl ... talk talk talk ... if he's a real girl .. he surely would be a NAGGER wife!
People do talk about him and people love to watch him...
BUT NOT BECAUSE HE LOOKS PRETTY & GOOD in the ring...
BUT BECAUSE MANY WANT HIM TO LOSE and be KNOCKED OUT!!!
People and even promoters and almost desperate to spend MILLIONS and MILLIONS .. just to see FLOYD
LOSE or most specially KNOCKED OUT.
If I'm the ref (after he got knocked out) I WOULD PROBABLY make a skit of taping his mouth with a zipper print/graphic.
Damn, I DO HATE FLOYD!

STIK & MOVE : I'm guessing you're black as well, uh? If you are a boxer trying to make it and if your record is somethinkg like Sugar Ray Leonard's or Hagler or Lennox or Roy Jones it might help you. Ask them if they felt race was a problem. UH??? Aren't those some of the most beloved boxers in modern history? What about Joe Louis???? That one REALLY felt racism in the old days but almost automatically he was made America's sweetheart until he died. What About Ali and Sugar Ray Robinson or George Foreman???? And the list goes on.... you seem to me like a boxing looser who never cut it to have a decent record and now you are jumping in Mayweather's racism bandwagon... what a shame you are. FIGHT TO EARN RESPECT. THE WORLD IS MADE OF EXCUSES. RACISM IS SOMETHING WE LEFT BEHIND IN THE 20th CENTURY YOU LOOSER!!! did I ask you to shut up before?? what happened with that. Do it. there's a world of difference between best "technical" fighter (like Pretty Boy, Marquez) than best "pure" warriors like Pacquiao, Tyson, Pavlik. Unfortunately the hardcores like pure fighters. But what all separate Pacquiao and Pavlik from the rests are their humble demeanors and reverence to the Lord inside and outside the ring.

I can't believe this. I see what's going on in this newer article and the same handful of guys are still basically bowing down to Floyd Mayweather Jr. like he's their God or something. What is wrong with you specific guys? You all know who I'm talking about. Yes, I know FLOYD MAYWEATHER IS THE LEGEND is going to say hey, you knew what the article was about when you clicked to it, but I also knew everyone would be in here, because nothing's on right now, so all this is another oppurtunity to expose Mayweather Jr. for the spoiled brat and coward that he is. I suppose the real example of a great fighter who rose above most racial bias, and became very popular in all races in America and throughout a lot of the world was someone already mentioned above, THE GREATEST HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION OF ALL TIME!!! The "Brown Bomber" JOE LOUIS!!! ( 68 wins, 3 losses, forgot how many Ko's ) Ranked by the Ring Magazine as the best puncher of all time! A reporter once said and I quote " Joe Louis was a credit to his race, the HUMAN race." There are no other races. There are simply different ways of life and different skin colors. I dislike all criminal scum and those ways of life, but greatly respect true honest hard work. My dad used to tell me, before he died at the age of 72 last year, when he wasakid he would listen to Joe Louis fights on the radio and people around town would feel like this wasn't just the second "negro" heavyweight champion ever, but that this man, this champion, this soldier, truly represented America. With all due respect to the Mayweather/De la Hoya fight, the whole world truly stood still at the Joe Louis/ Max Schmelling rematch where " The World Awaits " at the brink of World War 2 and this fight was more than a boxing match, it was the hope of a nation, America was on the ropes. Joe Louis had to face the only man to have beaten him at the time, had to reverse the Ko loss. There was no way in hell Joe Louis was losing again to this man. THIS WAS FOR AMERICA! Joe Louis's title reign was long before my time, but I grew up on these stories and feel like I was there. Floyd Mayweather Jr would be a broken man in Joe Louis's 1940's where there was no sweetheart HBO deal to pay him crazy amounts of money and avoid of alot of elite who would stand a decent chance against him. Floyd don't know what it really means to survive and thrive even! through truly racist times where it was nearly impossible for a non-white to make it big. No, Floyd will just count his millions, sit on his butt and ignore a slew of worthy welterweights. I might be in the minority in this, but it seems like a crime that De la hoya who ( judges scorewise anyway) gave Mayweather his closest pro fight, greatly helped in " Money's " money making ability and he doesn't get a chance to try to even the score in his last year of boxing?! I don't care what anyone has to say about this, he owes it to Oscar! Step up Pretty Girl!!! Be a man, I don't insult him because I secretly like him like some people might have you believe. I REALLY DON'T LIKE THIS ARROGANT, SPOILED ROTTEN, ELITE DODGING, MONEY OBSESSED, SO FULL OF CRAP, AFRAID THAT OSCAR AND A FEW FIGHTERS COULD ACTUALLY BEAT HIM, EGO-MANIAC JERK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CAN I GET A HECK YEAH?!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm not demanding that he fight 20 more years man! I've explained in previous comments why he isn't so great. Do 2 more fights. That's it. That's all I ask, and if he wins those 2 fights, I'll ask all of you to please never say another negative word about Mayweather again. The 2 fights I choose are the De la Hoya rematch before the end of the year, (believe me, Oscar would cancel all former plans if Mayweather unretired within one month from now.) That one and the winner of Cotto/Margarito. Not one more negative word. If he stays retiered, the many of us Mayweather haters will make sure he doesn't get to live this down for the rest of his life. Go ahead. Stay retired. There will never be peace for that coward. Legacy? What freakin legacy?

i'm hoping against hope that HBO will never ever do business again with mayweather because he doesn't deserve all the fortunes that he got fighting under HBO. there are a lot more better fighters than him who are big draws like pacquiao, pavlik, cotto etc. who are likewise great role models outside the ring. boxing is not all about mayweather and even without him, boxing will continue to flourish as it did for a very long time.

yes floyd is arrogant yes he is an ass&*7 but he is the very best and i think thats what kills all of you . dont tell me you think manny "i am to scared to fight anyone that is good" paquiao or how ever you spell his name can even compete with floyd there is no way no how he can even step in the ring . i think if floyd fights again and manny shows up to watch the fight he should get kicked out because he dont even belong in the same arena as floyd . yes manny is good but he aint the best he beat old barrera and old morales who has a win over manny and he has a draw with marquez which everyone knows marquez beat him. then fights sorry ass david diaz . why didnt he fight casamayor or nate cambell why didnt he fight the best at 135 why is marquez fighting the best in casamayor . manny is good but very over rated but its nice that his fans build him up more than he is because it reminds me mexican and black fighters are always good every now and then maybe once in a blue moon well have a phillapino fighter practice on our old fighters so that when we put him in there with our young lions they'll just eat him for breakfast.

Lots of you here talk about boxing like if you know. It's not only about where your from, but knowing who is the boxer with the best skills. Margarito will not, I repeat will not beat Cotto. And go ahead and fight all you want, but face it when the day comes you will learn to respect Cotto as the good boxer he is. Mayweather quit. He might have a 39-0 record, but face it who has he really beaten apart from an old Gatti and a close De la Hoya fight. He has not fought Cotto nor Margarito.

I was comparing THEIR RECORDS, not their SKILLS, since you brought the poor argument of Cotto's 32-0 record. Yo, you're not reading well. You're answering the first thing that you see. And just because Floyd didn't KO Baldomir, he's abad fighter??????????HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 120-108. 120-108. 118-110. Did Cotto ever scored those numbers on decisions. It is more safer to KO someone, than bring up a decision. To KO someone, just means you have punching power, not necesarily that dominated. Anybody can come from behind to score a KO at the last moment. Punching power don't mean CRAP. But when you win with these numbers, means you completely DOMINATED your opponent hands down. Cotto never scored those numbers.

Is Floyd Mayweather Is The Legend serious?! Since when do people say about a boxer, man that one guy killed that other guy in a wide decision? If you can knockout someone, especially a supposed elite fighter like Zab Judah, why wouldn't you? Who says, " Man, Mayweather's pitter patter punches and girly dance decision win was way better than when Miguel Cotto smashed that same guy's face in and made him unable to continue.? " Also Miguel Cottos resume is very solid with step up's in competion being taken on a regular basis until he finally has been beating down the elite. More than once he showed how he was not afraid to lose his undefeated record by beating a couple of guys that already beat him in the amateurs. You wouldn't have seen Mayweather get back in the same ring with someone who beat him as a teenager no matter what you gave him. Mayweather has all kinds of talent, money, stamina, but no heart, not a great punch, and not enough desire to clean out the best in the division like a true champ. Mayweather does have a solid resume, but it still could have been much better. Imangine Mayweather Is The Legend, if your man actually cleaned out the welterweight division, we'd probaly never dissrepect him again. Now wake up and face reality! YOUR MAN IS A COWARD!!! Only once did Mayweather have a rematch in his pro career, ( against Castillo of course.) that was the only time it was deemed close enough to be needed. Well guess what! The time has come again! All the times to retire and he chooses about 3 months away from the De la Hoya rematch, HMMM.... Do you all smell Chicken entrails? Hey, let's all change the name of the color yellow to Floyd. That's a perfect fit for it. By the way, Miguel Cotto can also box, yey, not just slug, but box when it's smarter to as it was with Shane Mosley. Wow, doesn't seem like Cotto has a problem with beating down worthy guys. For him, it's always time to kick @$$ and take names. Too bad Cotto doesn't care what anybody's name is. LOL!!!! For Mayweather it's, "oh goodness, that 8 year girl scout won her last fight, I better leave." Mayweather fans, FORGET YOU ALL YOU IRRELEVANT JOKES, AND YOUR MAN IS THE BIGGEST JOKE OF ALL!!!! LOL!!!!

I love watching May fights, and Cotto/ Pac / Pavlik now too. I appreciate the sweet science , especially someone as sharp as Floyd ! I think a lot of these folks in hear critisizing never laced 'em up before. You can find flaws in any fighters game if you are a pessimist. When Hatton fought May it was exciting. It's called controlling the pace and ring generalship. If a fighter don't like it cut off the ring!!! I bet that fighter won't like the outcome. An animal is always most dangeruos when they feel trapped. Even Emmanuel Stewart said it , when you pressure Floyd he's more dangerous. And if you had an opportunity to make 50 million or 10 million which would you take???? Especailly when you have to train so hard you puke and can't eat what you want or no sex etc. A lot of people in here should go to a gym and spar a little before they come out their mouth with these comments. peace

One more thing, here's something Mayweather fans would have a hard time disputing. In 2005, as Mayweather was finally, seriously going on the #1 spot on the pound for pound list, why did he fight Henry Brussels, Arturo Gatti, and Shambra Mitchell in a row during that year? Was that really the best guys he figure he could KO? Not the best competion Floyd fans. Next three opponents were Zab Judah, Carlos Baldomir, and Oscar de la Hoya, and he couldn't come close to scoring a knockout over 1 of those 3, not even Baldomir! Those three I just mentioned were much better competion, but you think Floyd could have knocked out at least Baldomir since he was the 1 of those 3 guys that Floyd beat every second of every round. At least Zab and Oscar made it a fight with Floyd. What, too much to go for the knockout when clearly beating down the opponent? I guess Floyd suprised himself by finally knocking out Ricky Hatton in Floyd's supposed last fight. With just over 2 years between the previous knockout, ( November 2005, Shambra Mitchell, for those not paying attention) I guess Floyd's strategy was to string out the retirement until a few months have gone by, do some Wrestlemania show in the meantime, and then give a big screw you to the fans. ( By the way Ricky Hatton fight was December 2007, so between knockouts was about 2 years 1 month.) What a showman, HA! Here's something else, if Pacman is being insulted by taking on David Diaz in Pac's first Lightweight fight, than what's anyone's explanation of why Mayweather's first Welterweight fight was against Sharmbra Mitchell, obviously not the best welterweight. Well?

STICK IT UP AND MOVE :: I'm Puertorican as well. But that shouldn't mind in the universal sport of boxing. In this case you are a sorry a$$ Mayweather fan who doesn't want to face reality. He is a foul mouth who talks more than his punches will ever tell. It is like you, I'm sure you are a punk who can't stand a punch but that doesn't keep you up from talking and trying to look brave. Pacquiao is the new "real" P4P and yes, he is Filipino, and a brave one. Why can't you admit he is more worth of watching than your FADEWEATHER. You should fade as well... so.... fade... bye.... stay shut.... shhhh.... good girl.

Don, I know I'm the idiot huh..u clown what does PUTO mean in spanish. You are a serious clown. So Don means #1 and Puto Means you know what..Hmm So you are the Number 1 guy who lets guys go up you. It figures. Anony, well whatever you are you are a PUTO as well. I don't have to talk and look brave, you are a puerto rican like Kermit Cintron another PUTO. lol Just to show you what you know my favorite fighter is Cotto. And evidently you don't read my comments because I said I thought that Cotto would beat Mayweather, so I'm not on some Mayweather bandwagon. So you look very stupid. Both of you guys are PUTO bandits I can tell. Once again u are PUTO's to me. 2 Putos who does nothing in boxing other then just talk. If you want to talk sensible about boxing that's cool but if you want to get ignorant then just ignore me and get ignorant with your Puto's. Tu eres Maricon!

Puto & Anony..I like that name for you. The Puto brothers..lol I can tell both of you guys are the fake Puerto Ricans, from either L.A. or New York. NOT real Puerto Ricans like Tito Trinidad, Miguel Cotto, Edwin Rosario or Wilfredo Benitez.. I don't disrespect anyone. But if you disrespect me I will do the same to you. Like I said if you don't like what I say in my comments about certain fighters then ignore my comments when I post and I will do the same to you.

Charles Montgomery Burns:

Look, Floyd is an amazing athlete his work ethic is second to none that boy trains hard. I actually enjoy watching Floyds fights I admire his skills but what's real is real Floyd has never faced anyone who was a legitimate threat and overcame, and he knows that. It bothers Floyd Mayweather Jr that deep down he is AFRAID to face someone that can really hurt him that's why he and his team choose to fight guys who they're Absolutely Positive he can ice. You don't believe me? Why do you think he's choosing to retire now? Look at some of the welterweights out there right now, there's competition now and Floyd knows that and it scares him.. Playing the race card come on! I hate it when they do that sh##!!! It seems like Mayweather is just getting more and more ignorant by the hour. Mayweather has amazing athletic ability and I've kicked it with him he's a cool person it's just sad that in this game Floyd doesn't have the Toughness real fighters have. He's a smart business man I'll give him that Floyd should just stay retired and just watch fighters fight. I've seen him at the fights it's funny because he screams at the fighters "man up and fight! Fight!" Isn't that funny?

Charles Montgomery..I completely agree with you. Floyd at best is a Junior Welterweight. Yeah he can go up and fight some welterweights who are not that good but the real welterweights like Margarito, Paul Williams, Joshua Clottey are too big for him. It's like when Roy Jones went to heavyweight and fought John Ruiz, Jones couldn't have done that against Klitschko, Peters or Lennox Lewis. That's why going up in weight is so over rated when they pick certain guys and not the guys in the division. Roberto Duran is one of few great fighters who could go up in weight and not run from his opponent.

Playing Matchmaker: Williams/Cotto, Pavlik/Abraham Winners Meet
"I wouldn't mind paying 50 dollars for a Paul Williams /Miguel Cotto fight with Margarito/Clottey in the undercard. Or Jermain Taylor/Paul Williams with a fight between Kelly Pavlik/Arthur Abraham on the same night. A set up like that would be good for boxing 'cause the fans would see four good fighters in one night and possibly see the two winners fight in the near future.Too bad boxing doesn't think about the fans the way fans think about boxing." ---TSS reader Arturo plays matchmaker
