King Setting Up Valuev/Ruiz II
By Ron Borges
Thursday Don King helped land John Ruiz his fourth shot at the World Boxing Association heavyweight title. That’s twice as many times as Ruiz has tried to sue King to get out of his promotional contract with the king of bombast, but who’s counting?
Fortunately for Ruiz, not King.
“Working together works!’’ King crowed from the tarmac in Buenos Aires as he prepared to fly back to Florida after having joined with Ruiz’s attorney, Tony Cardinale, at the WBA Convention to pressure the WBA Governing Board into enforcing their own rules (which happens less often than the sport would like).
If they did, King knew, the WBA would have to grant the No. 2 ranked Ruiz an immediate shot at the WBA interim title against top rated former champion Nikolay Valuev after title holder Ruslan Chagaev tore his left Achilles tendon in his final day of sparring for a planned title defense against Valuev.
The injury forced the undefeated Chagaev to pull out of a mandatory defense against Valuev for the second time and left him unable to fight until the end of the year. More importantly, it meant Chagev would fail by a wide margin to defend the title against the mandatory challenger within a year as per the WBA’s rules after first winning it by outpointing Valuev last April.
This was also the third title fight Chagaev had to withdraw from due to injury, an injury that is likely to sideline him for six months or more. Faced with those facts, the WBA named him “champion in recess’’ and ordered that Valuev and Ruiz square off for the interim title with Chagaev ordered to be ready to face the winner by June 26, 2009.
“This is great!’’ King boomed. “Johnny gets an opportunity to become a three-time heavyweight champion. Yes, he does. He tried to sue me twice but I don’t pay any attention to that. I do all I can for them and when they try to walk away from me I just say, ‘Forgive them Father for they know not what they do.’’
In this case, Ruiz knew exactly what he was trying to do when he left Las Vegas and headed to Buenos Aires with Cardinale in tow. He was going there to try and continue reviving his career after having first lost the WBA title to Valuev by a hotly disputed majority decision in Berlin on Dec. 17, 2005 and then a title elimination fight to Chagaev by a majority decision 11 months later.
Ruiz is now on a two-fight win streak that included a dominating, one-sided 12-round victory over three time title challenger Jameel McCline in March. In a sense, he can now add to that a win over the WBA or at least winning over King. Well, sort of.
“Everybody knows Don is the best promoter in the world,’’ Ruiz said. “But he really hasn’t fulfilled our contract. He can be the best for you or he can be the worst for you. I hope he’s going to help me.’’
That remains the subject of some debate because if he chooses King can simply ignore not only those two lawsuits but also the whole issue because, typically, he has a promotional piece of both fighters. King remains Ruiz’s promoter but also is Valuev’s co-promoter along with Germany’s Wilfried Sauerland. Not coincidentally, Sauerland was also briefly Ruiz’s manager but only until he got him beat by Valuev in Germany.
King said he hopes the fight will not go to purse bid. If it does it will be a 50-50 purse split and that’s very likely to be the case in any event. King said he would try to put together a deal to bring the fight to either New York’s Madison Square Garden or to Las Vegas, although his reasoning may not be that reassuring to Ruiz.
“I think it belongs in America,’’ King said. “The big guy is an attraction. He should be in Las Vegas or New York. And with Johnny’s new trainer (Manny Siaca) we’re seeing a difference in John Ruiz.’’
Since Ruiz stands 6-3 and Valuev is seven feet tall, it was clear who King was talking about. Yet, as always, he was keeping his options open.
“If Ruiz wins he’s a legit champion,’’ King said. “They can’t get around it. That’s up to Johnny. He fell down but he’s come out of this smelling like a rose.’’
In a sense so did Ruslan Chagaev, who will have defended the WBA title only once since first winning it April 14, 2007, by the time he’s again healthy. Chagaev (24-0-1, 17 KO) claims he’ll be ready to fight by the end of the year but Ruiz came to the WBA Convention armed with the opinion of a Boston Celtics’ team doctor who claimed it’s unlikely he’ll be ready for at least a year.
Whatever the truth of that, the present truth is that Ruiz and Valuev will square off, possibly by Aug. 31, according to King, in their second title fight in three years with the winner in position to cash in again against Chagaev before a likely shot against WBC champion Samuel Peter, who is also promoted by King.
That could set up the eventual winner emerging with half of the title belts around his waist and thus equal bargaining power with present IBF-WBO champion Wladimir Klitschko in what would be a big-money unification fight late next year.

Question. As well as being the tallest, is Valuev also the hairiest heavyweight ever? Just curious. Aaron, I'll keep shouting till somebody listens, KEVIN JOHNSON, 28 years old, 18-0-1, only 6 KO so he's not a great banger, and he needs to work on his stamina a little, but man he can move and jab as fast as he can talk- in fact if he shut his gob during fights that would conserve his energy. And brash as The Kingpin may be, he's a nice guy, actually a single dad, having sole custody and raising his 9 year old daughter by himself. Go King Kev, though of couse I am the man who had Dominique Guinn as the greatest thing since sliced bread, and we all know what happened there. Toonoy

Close call Smiley, but if you Google image TTTG and check out the one of him boxing the bear (we kid you not loyal readers), I think you'll agree Valuev looks more like the bear! I think we need to start a poll on this one. Come on TSS world, give us your top five P4P hairiest boxers ever. Toonoy.

A little something for you to dwell on here Smiley. Found it in The Guardian online. "If a hairy man becomes insatiably curious about what it means to have all that hair, he may well run across the work of Dr AG Alias. (Yes, that is his name.) Alias is an expert on certain aspects and implications of the hairiness of men. This was just a year after Alias had published a paper titled Top Ranked Boxers Are Less Hirsute Than Lower Level Boxers. In it, he discusses mesomorphs - big-boned, muscular men. Dr Alias carefully analysed 380 drawings in William Sheldon's book Atlas of Men. This was to gain a general understanding of whether big brutes have lots of body hair.
Alias then carefully examined Harry Mullen's tome Great Book Of Boxing, in which "body hair-revealing pictures are printed of 49 top-ranked, white heavyweight boxers, 15 of whom became world champions". Alias concluded that, as a rule, champions were less hairy than non-champions. However, he cautions that the difference is not statistically significant.
Alias also looked at black boxers who appeared on television. He reports that "around 35% of the black boxers appear to be more hirsute than any of the 16 black boxers featured in [the book] All-Time Greats of Boxing: Johnson, Louis, Walcott, Patterson, Liston, Ali, Frazier, Holmes, Tyson, M Spinks, Robinson, Hagler, Armstrong, Hearns, Leonard, and Saddler. Archie Moore, Ezzard Charles, Mike Weaver, Tony Tubbs, Iran Ian Barkley and Lennox Lewis, who were conspicuously hirsute heavyweight champions, were less than outstanding. "
I'm sure all this will really annoy Anony, still that's all part of the fun. Toonoy

Kevin Johnson is a top contender at best, he may win a belt and then get a chance to be clobbered by Klitschko, he's too old to "develop" power or overwhelmingly change his style to dominate any better than he already has. Ali and Tyson had climbed the top 10 ranks and defined their style by their early 20's.

Ruiz is most effective when he hits and then grabs his man. If Valuev can pop Ruiz with the jab from the outside then it will be a long night for the clutcher.

Ruiz/Valuev2? Imagine the character's voice Kratos from the God of War video games saying the next quote. " WHAT MADNESS IS THIS THAT HAS BEEN UNLEASHED FROM THE DEPTHS OF HADES ONCE AGAIN UPON THIS LAND?!!!" LOL! But seriously, this fight needed a rematch as much as Oscar de la Hoya needs to make another million dollars. Plain and simple, these 2 guys can't fight their way out a paper bag, or for a paper title for that matter. Wait, I heard George Foreman will fight the winner. Why not? If big George could do what he did at 45, sadly at 58, he could probaly still beat these chumps. Rocky Balboa/Rocky 6 for real. After he beats the winner of this fight, Big George could face Wlad Klitschko in a 10 round exhibition for George's final fight. 10 rounds, not a 12 round title match, I want George to be able to go the distance. Would anyone be against this really happening? FOREMAN! FOREMAN! The fight that really needs to be made though is Wlad Klitschko/Sam Peter 2 for the vacant Ring magazine title. Cmon you so called contenders. Forget big brother Vital K. ( the last ACTUAL heavyweight champ, as sad as that is.) Make the fights that matter happen! We need a real heavweight champion! Ruiz/Valuev, it is not! Don't listen to Don King and Bob Arum's lies. Know the truth. The one and only Ring magazine, people! Real titles. Real champs! I'm missing Lennox Lewis more and more all the time. Great champion. Brought honor to that title and most importantly, shut Mike Tyson up. This is Isaiah, only 25 and missing the "OLD TIME" heavyweights. Wlad, stop disgracing yourself. See you all later.

ANDY FROM NEWCASTLE :: I guess you should find a job that let you publish all that rubbish all day long man. Who the hell care about hair or not in boxers?? On the other hand, I guess a boxer who has hair in his shoulder can be disgusting intimidating to his opposite. Imagine leaning on a sweaty and hairy shoulder all night long ???? iaaaghhhhh. That could be really disturbing and might cut the concentration on his counterpart.... hummmm. A good tactic maybe. Tell Mayweather to grow hair and come back, that might scare Cotto or Margarito. hahahahaha

Thank you Amirony, but I didn't say it was my birthday, I just said I was 25. Thanks anyway though. Everybody's good. Anyway... I wouldn't say Valuev is hairy, but Robin Williams said he uses him for sun protection because he doesn't have enough hair. I wouldn't say Valuev is hairy, but Chewbacca is going to kick his butt for insulting the good name of the wookie. Once again, I wouldn't say Valuev has a lot of hair, but I heard he has a couple of estranged half grizzly bear kids around. Here's one. I wouldn't say Ruiz holds a lot, but Lionel Richie has been hired to sing love songs once the "FIGHT" begins. It's not that Ruiz holds a lot, but Ricky Hatton told them to get a room. Not saying anything bad about Ruiz, but Mike Tyson told him his conduct was innaproiate.
