Kendall Holt Wins In Nuke Fest!
By David A. Avila
Shades of the 1880s or the 1980s.
Kendall Holt and Ricardo Torres let the punches fly and when the dust settled it was like the shootout at Tombstone and the winner was Holt the lightning bolt.
New Jersey’s Holt survived two knockdowns and avenged an earlier controversial loss to WBO titleholder Torres before an electrified 3,226 fans at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino on Saturday.
Forget Wyatt Earp and his brothers or the Clanton clan, Holt and Torres fired more deadly blows in one round than a year’s worth of heavyweight title fights. They managed to condense the epic Marvin Hagler-Tommy Hearns three round battle into a mere 61 seconds.
Whew. Strike up the Tivos.
With Mike Tyson and Paris Hilton in the crowd Holt proved that he is the real junior welterweight world titleholder.
Last September, Torres had won a controversial win by knockout over Holt when the referee stepped in to halt the fight. Holt’s camp protested vehemently and was told to wait and he could get a rematch if he continued to win.
Holt (24-2, 13 KOs) kept his part of the bargain.
When the first bell rang both fighters did not feel a need to warm up gingerly, they immediately clashed like two junkyard dogs and fired power punches with little care of defense.
A perfect right hand counter dropped Holt within seconds of the first round’s beginning and down he went.
“I told myself I just got to let it go,” said Holt about getting dropped in the opening seconds. “I may go down but I get back up.”
Holt looked steady so the fight resumed after the count. Torres walked in firing big blows once again and landed a left hook that dropped Holt once more. He got up immediately and was caught again but referee Jay Nady stopped the action and began the count. Again Holt looked steady.
“I wasn’t hurt,” Holt maintained.
The fight resumed again and another furious exchange ensued with both fighters disregarding safety and letting punches fly. A left hook to the body landed, and a side-winding right hand caught Torres on the jaw and down he went dangling alongside the second strand of the boxing ring ropes, unconscious. Nady waved the fight over at 1:01 of the first round.
Five minutes after the last punch was thrown, Torres sat on his stool with an icepack on his head.
“I had him, he was in my hands. I got careless, he caught me,” said Torres after the fight. “A head butt caught me and made me off-balance and I never saw the last punch.”
The fight was one of the most electrifying in decades.
“It was unbelievable,” said Top Rank’s Bob Arum. “That was boxing history.”
Semi-main
Lamont Peterson, who recently along with twin brother Anthony signed with Top Rank, overwhelmed Sacramento’s Rogelio Castaneda, who tried to stay with the quicker fighter, but to no avail, in a junior welterweight fight.
A switch to southpaw along with a right hook dropped Castaneda. Peterson quickly jumped on Castaneda forcing his own corner to ask the referee to halt the fight at 2:50 of the ninth round for a technical knockout victory for Peterson.
“I love him like a brother,” said trainer Israel Piceno of Castaneda. “He took too many punches.”
Peterson had been out of action for six months but looked in top shape.
Prelim bouts
A battle between two undefeated female fighters ended in a draw between Ana “Hurricane” Julaton and Johana Mendez (3-0-1) in a six round featherweight bout. The smaller Mendez moved up from bantamweight and gave angles and movement to keep Julaton from loading up.
Julaton (4-0-1), who suffered a cut over her right eye due to an accidental head butt, pressed the issue in the last round to salvage a draw against the clever Mendez. The taller Filipina fighter managed to out-punch Arizona’s Mendez and salvage the fight.
The judges scored it 59-55 Julaton, 58-56 Mendez and 57-57 a draw.
Riverside’s Michael Franco (12-0, 8 KOs) was matched against Mexico’s Javier Lagos (15-11-2) who had fought to the distance against champions Brian Viloria, Jorge Arce and Victor Burgos. So it was no surprise he lasted the six-round distance against big punching Franco, who proved too strong even for the veteran Lagos.
A counter right hand sent Lagos to the floor in the fifth round but he beat the count. In the sixth round Franco opened up the offense and landed several big left hook, but the cagey Mexican fighter managed to survive the onslaught.
The judges scored the fight 59-53 and 59-54 twice for Franco.
Carlos Vinan (8-6-3) handed Andrew Cancio (8-0-3, 8 KOs) his first loss winning by majority decision according to the judges 57-56 twice and 57-57 in a junior lightweight decision.
Filipino featherweight Glen Gonzalez (6-0, 4 KOs) powered his way through Florida’s Robert Da Luz (11-12-2, 9 KOs) after six rounds. No knockdowns were scored in the fight that saw both fighters cut due to punches. The judges scored it 60-54 and 59-55 twice for Gonzalez.
New York’s Omar Coffi (1-0-1) scored his first pro win by dominating Texan Trinidad Marry (0-3) in a four round junior middleweight match. Judges scored it 40-36.
Joseph Judah (2-0), younger brother of former world champion Zab Judah, scored a unanimous decision over L.A. fighter Luis Tapia (0-1) making his pro debut. Judah had a five-inch height advantage but Tapia proved resilient in the junior middleweight four-rounder. Judges scored it 40-36, 39-37 twice for Judah.

Great Knockout. But. Right before the knockout of Torres, Holt accidently Headbutted
him. It's obvious watch the replay. The Headbutt did in Torres before the hit on the temple.

Sweet revenge! Nice work Rated-R. Definitely a head butt at the end - as evident by Holt's cut over his right eye - but to say that the headbutt decided the fight is foolish. That right-handed bomb of Holt's has just provided us knockout of the year. Enjoy ladies and gents!

Action per second, this fight is P4P FOTY. Stunning spectacular staggering stuff. Having been evicted from Durty's by karaoke again, and then had all 20 tvs in the Dog House tuned into Rampage v Griffin, I had to come home and sit up till 2am to watch this one (the rerun of Manny v Diaz kept me busy thank you hbo). Well worth the red eye in the morning, and so much for my prediction of them sounding each other out for the first few rounds. At least I picked the right guy, but let's do it again this year, then if Ricky doesn't fancy the winner, Manny can really give us a show. Wow, I can't get the grin off my face. Toonoy. (Both the pre fight and post fight articles were very entertaining David)

Boxing needs more fights like these. A steady diet of wars like these will bring back boxing to its glory days. Not the fake punk running gayweather calling himself better than robinson yet runs from a shot DLH

What a fight! Holt won fair and square but Torres was very unfortunate that the headbutt (admittedly accidental) shifted the momentum and allowed Holt to land the knockout blow.
Torres deserves a rubber match.
Note to HBO - how about Torres v Holt 3 and Hatton v Malignaggi doubleheader in November at MSG!
I predict Torres would win the third fight by KO but I'd love to see if I am wrong.
Congratulations to both fighters for a truly memorable spectacle - that was why we all love boxing so much. Give me a minute of that over 12 rounds of Klitschko anytime!

Notice no beer bottles thrown this time. Damn torres needs to learn how to take people out and stop acting like a street brawler that he is.

FIGHT OF THE YEAR:
|
Unquestionably and unequivocally Fight of the Year, 2008. This is the intensity that boxing needs. More fights like this and boxing will again have its own section in major American newspapers such as the NY Times and Washington Post, and not be relegated to "Other Sports" or "More Sports" sections, where tennis and competitive eating are covered.

How about a trilogy?? What a fight! It was as barbaric as it was beautiful - for as long as it lasted! 61 seconds of sublimity! Can Hopkins and Calzaghe provide this entertainment? NO! What about Scareweather?? Never did! I want to see Holt - Pacquiao, which would be a WAR!

Pacman would knock Holt out in 61 seconds. It will be no war. Holt had a lotto night with a wild, undisciplined, street-like, punk-a$$ fighter. In the business of the sweet science, Holt will be chopped down, cut up and KTHFO. The guy is very shattered. He will not hold that WBO alphabet-soup belt long. Fo' sure!

FLOYD MAYWEATHER IS THE LEGEND!!!!!!!!!!!!::
|
That was the headbutt. No doubt, but that's part of boxing. That's what happens when you don't got the pure boxing technique like Floyd does. You have to know how to finish your opponents. Ricardo Torres always had good potential, but he doesn't know how to box. He's a street fighter and a brawler who doesn't even know how to finish off his opponents. Congrats to Holt. Payback's GREAT HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A good fight but for it to be considered FOTY, more needs to be at stake. This was two mediocre/a notch above average guys that went in slinging and one was bound to be caught (via headbutt). A good scrap but not FOTY.

Don't agree Smiley, it would be a great fight. Holt can be as smooth, slick and defensive (read dull), as they come. But last night he chose, or rather had the choice made for him by Torres wild assault, to be a hell for leather, six or sticks (to use a cricket analogy), bomber. And came out on top BIG TIME. If he and Manny came out the same way, agreed, it may last only 61 seconds again, but the outcome would be, as you rightly said, another lotto. Holt can BANG as hard as Manny. Great fight, if Hatton doesn't want it, bring on Manny. (though I read elsewhere that Hatton wants to fight Oscar or Manny at Wembley as his final fight next year, after Paulie in November). Toonoy

TERRIFIC FIGHT BUT the headbutt was the reason Torres got down. HOLT JUST GOT LUCKY AND HE DIDN'T PROVE TO BE READY FOR ANYTHING BIGGER THAN THE MAN WHO KNOCKED HIM DOWN TWICE IN A FIRST ROUND. That was Ricardo Torres's fight from 0:01 seconds to 0:57. Holt himself should ask for a rematch if he wants to convince us he is ready to move to better fights. In the meantime I preffer to follow the brave Colombian career. Think it outside the box and you will find out the headbutt decided Torres faith and Holt's LUCK. If this were to be judge by the replay, the referee could have RIGHTFULLY stopped the fight right after the headbutt but everything happened too fast and now Holt is celebrating he is a better fighter???? So if Holt and his Managers are true to the sport, they should fight again. I WILL BET FOR TORRE'S BIG TIME AFTER WHAT I SAW.

It is true, we all end up talking about Mayweather but it is as I told "Floyd is the Legend" (the scareweather only fan here), these are the fights that makes us jump from our sits and maes the beer taste better. Definnetly, money well spent in cable. NOT A TYPICAL FLOYD MAYWEATHER ZZZZZZZ FIGHT FOR SURE. hahahahaha. After Pacquiao-Diaz and Torres-Holt... WHO NEEDS FLOYD'S PRESENCE IN BOXING??? Give me fights like this and I will keep in love with boxing and paying my cable.

That ladies was a NUCLEAR WAR!!! Open up the vaults as a new entrant has been admitted to the all-time classic library! I think we can all agree that we'd pay to see that a 3rd time! Give it up for two warriors fighting the right way, slugging it out, man a mano, and doing it all for the fans! No BS Bernard Hopkins 7 punches per round, or slapping from Calzaghe, or hugging and pillow talk from Ruiz, or anything Antonio Tarver, this was what boxing is about and what TSS should strive toward. Who won??? THE FANS!

I watched the fight an it was a great fight until the head butts became more, frequent. There were more than was mentioned on replays but, when some fighters get out of synique they just cheat beyond a normal situation. If they win on error they are a great pugulist , it they don't the judges are racial. Some how boxing has got back to the black an white thing and I am sick of it an only watch championship matches anymore. These young people have to put their predjudices aside an fight for the tiltle with out all your negitive racial crap.

The headbutt probably did decide the fight. I think Holt should give an immediate rematch to Torres. The knockout was great but the headbutt right before the punch did in Torres. Wasn't it funny how the Showtime announcers totally missed the boat. I recorded the fight and watched it about 20 times. The accidental headbutt was the KO
blow before the punch that nailed Torres on the temple. What a shame for Torres.

Great fight and all, but no way does this top Vazquez-Marquez III. Not even close, and yes the headbutt was the DECIDING FACTOR in the fight. Looked accidental but its what lead to Holt landing that touch of sleep right hand. Trilogy!

Looking back at the fight a few times today, you're right Rudy. It was a sickening thrill ride for 61 seconds, but does not come close to Vazquez-Marquez III, for intensity built on the two previous wars. Still great to watch while you are boiling a kettle though. Toonoy.

Looking back at the fight in slow motion, it does appear that he (Torres) was accidently headbutted before he got knocked out. The headbutt stunned him which lead to the KO. I do believe a rematch is in order; however, I know Holt will not give him one. He's looking for greener pastures aka more money. It was a good fight while it lasted.

I was about 15 feet away & Torrez was really hurt by the head butt. The punch finished him but he was defitnetly hurt by it & was actually down. He would have hit the canvas had the ropes not kept him up. Aside from that Holt has been stopped twice & was dropped twice in this fight, this kid doesn't have a chin. He will get exsposed soon so yah he should try and get as much cash as possible.

I have to say my part even if I'm not a regular on here. I'm glad Mayweather is gone. Mayweather never deserved pound for pound #1 by a long shot. What scares Mayweather fans the most is that Oscar de la Hoya COULD beat him. Oscar knows where he went wrong in the first fight, ( not using the body attack at it's fullest by not dipping down all the way with it, and not using his jab more.) Oscar would have ran over Gayweather in the rematch. And hey, you think the so called ring magazine welterweight champ and 2007 fighter of the year could defend his title,(Ricky Hatton,he don't count, please... stay at 140 Vicky Fatton.) I know someone is going to say, but Mayweather started at junior lightweight! Blah, blah, blah. If your're the welter champ, DEFEND THE TITLE AGAINST WELTERWEIGHTS! Miguel Cotto, Antonio Margarito, Shane Mosley, Paul Williams, all 4, especially Cotto, would beat the crap out of Mayweather. Floyd don't want none. Heck, if the Hatton fight took place at 140 with a different ref, who knows what could have happened? Here's a riddle for you all, how does Mayweather become the world's fastest woman? Put a picture of Miguel Cotto in his way and "Floydina" will grab her tampons and prance down the street.

Left Hook to the body and that shoddy looking right cross, DID YOU ALL MISS THE CLASS OF HEADS FROM THE REVERSE ANGLE AS HOLT CAME IN HE HEADBUTTED HIM RIGHT IN THE FACE(hence the cut above his eye) LANDED THE LEFT TO THE BODY AND THEN THE HALF POWERED CROSS CAME IN.
It was three blows, check the reverse camera angle one more time u can clearly see the clash of heads, then the left goes in to the body and then the cross, Again boxing has failed to be fair and the USA buy another beltt.

2009 Reader Of The Year Weighs In On Legacies Of Pacquiao And Mayweather
"Pacquiao has proven....in the ring... time and time again that he is the greatest of this time. He has earned his respect. He begs for nothing. He is a man content with his growth, his family and his achievements. A man the world has now turned it's eyes to behold. Floyd Mayweather is not even close in stature. He may possess the greatest skills but he is not the Face of Boxing today. Google Manny Pacquiao. There are 20 million searches. Google Floyd. There are 6.5 million. Look at the NYTimes, the Wall Street Journal and Time. Count how many words were used these past years to mention Floyd Mayweather. Then count the words still being printed about Manny. And keep counting. As I've said many times, Floyd has been too clever by half. He has short changed his public.....and has out-smarted himself. Manny will fight but a few more times. Enjoy it while you can. He is an all time great pugilist. Floyd, with all of his remarkable skills lack the will to be truly great in the biggest sense of the word. His legacy will look more like Holmes that Ali. He has earned it." ---November is half-way gone, but we don't need to keep counting ballots. It's a landslide. Fe'Roz has won the 2009 Reader of the Year award. His comments add to the website immeasurably, and he epitomizes the thoughtful, respectful, educated fan of pugilism we strive to cater to at TSS. Congrats, Fe'Roz, and please accept my thanks for being the valued member of this community that you are. Sincerely, Editor Mike
