TSS Prospect Watch: Julaton and Franco

By David A. Avila

Two red-hot prospects take part in the Planet Hollywood Casino fight card that should not be missed if you’re the kind of fan that likes to be in the know.

First, there’s female featherweight Bay area’s Ana “Hurricane” Julaton in a four round bout and then there’s Riverside, California’s Michael “Lil Warrior” Franco in a six round bantamweight bout.

Both bear watching.

Julaton, 27, finds herself fighting in less than two weeks after knocking out her last opponent. Now she’ll be trying to make it back-to-back but may not find it as easy when she meets Arizona’s undefeated bantamweight Johana Mendez (3-0, 1 KOs).

The tall Filipina fighter has been helped along by Manny Pacquiao and is trained by Freddie Roach. She’s a very aggressive fighter who likes to move forward. She’s quite a paradox.

When you speak to Julaton she’s articulate, sincere and very hospitable to everyone she meets. Inside the ring she’s like a bulldozer who only wants to stamp out the competition. In fact, for a while she despised the sport of boxing.

“I learned boxing to teach it,” said Julaton (4-0, 1 KOs), who teaches martial arts in Berkeley, California. “I hated boxing.”

Slowly she began to appreciate the finer aspects of the sport and soon began to like sparring. So she was entered in amateur boxing and quickly found her calling.

But her folks did not like her life choice until she turned professional.

“They would ask me where I wanted to go with amateur boxing, what’s the use,” Julaton says. “After I became a professional they began to accept it.”

Later, Julaton would meet Pacquiao and her family loved boxing even more. The new pound for pound champion has helped whenever he can.

“He’s been a great inspiration,” said Julaton, who turns 28 on Saturday the day of her fight. “Once he helped me get a fight.”

The featherweight prospect has beaten two solid fighters in Rita Valentini and Carley Batey. Now she faces an undefeated fighter like herself.

“I know she has a good amateur background,” Julaton says of Mendez.

Julaton knocked out Salina Jordan last Thursday June 26 in the first round. She expects a different fighter this time.

“My goal is to be a world champion,” she says. “I feel it’s the only thing I can give in return.”

Franco

Michael Franco (11-0, 8 KOs) has been stirring up interest with his two-fisted power in a 118-pound body. He can just hit.

Franco started as a junior lightweight but as he began to train more it was evident that he belonged in a lower weight class. First he dropped to featherweight and soon dropped to bantamweight.

He’s simply a very strong fighter.

Those who saw him beat a good fighter in Ernie Marquez last March at the Home Depot Center left convinced he might be a future champion.

Lately, Riverside, California has begun showcasing some great fighters. Franco is yet another boxer with good potential from the area known as the Inland Empire.

Franco faces Juan Javier Lagos (15-10-2) at the Planet Hollywood Casino on Saturday. He’s ready to move to bigger fights if he can pass this test.

Lagos is a former flyweight contender who’s battled several prominent fighters to the distance, including Giovani Segura, Jorge Arce and Brian Viloria. He’s moving up in weight to see if it makes a difference for him.

It should be an interesting test between Franco’s raw power and Lagos experience.

Boxing chatter

La Habra’s Enrique Ornelas meets Daryl Salmon in a middleweight showdown on Friday in Texas. Ornelas was scheduled to fight Jeff Lacy in July on the Shane Mosley-Zab Judah under card, but the entire fight card was scrapped due to Judah’s injury.

Former lightweight champion Juan Diaz is set to meet Australia’s Michael Katsidis on Sept. 6 in Houston, Texas. Both fighters are coming off losses and need a victory to get back in the title mix.

Mexico’s Juan Manuel Marquez is moving up in weight to meet Cuba’s Joel Casamayor on Sept. 13 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, said a spokeswoman from Golden Boy Promotions. The winner will be the interim WBO lightweight titleholder.

Talks between WBO and WBA lightweight titleholder Nate Campbell and former WBO junior lightweight champion Joan Guzman are underway for a meeting between the two on Sept. 13. No site has been determined.

Melinda Cooper will be fighting in August in Las Vegas. The Las Vegas-based prizefighter is perhaps the deadliest knockout puncher in women’s boxing and is considered one of the top fighters in the world. She plans to return to the junior bantamweight and bantamweight division after dabbling with featherweights last month.

Robert:  I like this Franco kid, strong good speed yet very humble. I see him at the Wildcard gym in Hollywood all the time. He is usually in with some of the Jr. lightweights giving them all they can handle. He has a site you can go for more info called lilwarrior. I think he has a good future.

Stik & Move:  I'm not a believer of Ana Julaton, female boxing is good as long as they are winning, all of a sudden when she losses she will not like the sport. I see it all the time when these females are all built up and when they are in a tough fight they stop fighting. I have to see more for me to be a believer.

Couch Potato:  Are they gonna air this fight? What channel?

Radam G hanging out with my peeps in Tawi-Tawi, Philippines:  Wow! ain't she cute! But like you say, my Toonoy bro, DANGEROUS!!! She got a sting like a 1,000 bees, a punch like a million wrecking ball, a smile that will light up the hearts of a billion live men and a couple of billion dead ones, and a face that three billion ladies admire and envy. Holla!
Saturday Jul 5, 2008 02:25:02 PM
Stik & Move:  Like I said once again, Ana is all Hype! She had a draw last night which means she actually lost since she was the favorite. Lets see how quick she gets back into the ring. She had stated that Bob Arum wanted her to fight for a title before the year is out. The only way she wins is to fight the girl she fought in her pro debut. Another girl that Freddie Roach trains. Wow!
Sunday Jul 6, 2008 02:57:24 AM
Smiley C:  She won the damn fight! Haters are everywhere, so are blind mice, especially in Vegas. There are judges who shouldn't be judging. Fo' sure!
Sunday Jul 6, 2008 11:58:54 AM
stik & move:  Smiley C..why couldn't the other girl just be better? You must be one of the blind mice! were you at the fight? Vegas has the best judges in the U.S. and if Julaton was ahead she would have gotten the decision. I'm sure Ana lost the fight.
Sunday Jul 6, 2008 03:52:50 PM
stik & move:  Why don't I hear any articles on the Julaton fight? All I heard is that she got caught with uppercuts and left hooks all night long. She really lost the fight but since she was being trained by Freddie Roach and is down with Pacquaio they didn't want to give her the loss. She got a big cut over her right eye. Nobody is a hater, Smiley u and whoever else just don't want to hear the truth
Monday Jul 7, 2008 04:07:45 PM
Smile C:  I was at the fight. "Best judges in the U.S." Now I know that you are a hater. Vegas is notorious for controversial decisions and straight rip-offs. I live in Las Vegas. Fo' sure!
Monday Jul 7, 2008 10:52:22 PM
Stik & Move:  Smile C. If you were at the fight then you tell me what happen because I had some friends who are in the media at the fight and told me how the fight went. Now you tell me! All you have said is "now I know you are a hater" I guess the judges cut her and was hitting her with uppercuts. You can't deal with the truth can you. She is an over rated fighter and that's that. 1 question, why would they want to cheat Ana when she is being promoted by Bob Arum and is down with Pacquaio. You are an idiot!
Tuesday Jul 8, 2008 12:33:37 AM
Smiley C:  Hater, name caller and liar. I won't need 2 call you "an idiot." Your words are speaking loud and clear about your disposition. Later 4 u. Ana is the best. Fo' sure!
Tuesday Jul 8, 2008 07:07:48 AM
HerkR:  I'll agree with Stik & Move. Ana is all hype. I follow filipino boxing, so have seen her name pop up all over. If you look at her record, she fights no body's. The girl she knocked out was knocked out the past 5 times she fought. Once she starts fighting people with skills, it will be a different story. I saw her fights on youtube and didn't see anything spectacular. A pretty face will only get you so far. And the cuts & bruises won't help.
Tuesday Jul 8, 2008 01:09:43 PM
stik & move:  HerkR thank you..I agree with you. That's all I was saying as well. I have seen Ana fight at Pechanga and when she fought Rita Valentini who is a bum. Rita is also trained by Freddie Roach so how does that look Smile C. Rita and Ana are stablemates and they are trained by the same fighter. Looks like bouts are being set up to make Ana look good. Call me a hater if you like. But Smile C you just don't want to hear the truth.

2009 Reader Of The Year Weighs In On Legacies Of Pacquiao And Mayweather
"Pacquiao has proven....in the ring... time and time again that he is the greatest of this time. He has earned his respect. He begs for nothing. He is a man content with his growth, his family and his achievements. A man the world has now turned it's eyes to behold. Floyd Mayweather is not even close in stature. He may possess the greatest skills but he is not the Face of Boxing today. Google Manny Pacquiao. There are 20 million searches. Google Floyd. There are 6.5 million. Look at the NYTimes, the Wall Street Journal and Time. Count how many words were used these past years to mention Floyd Mayweather. Then count the words still being printed about Manny. And keep counting. As I've said many times, Floyd has been too clever by half. He has short changed his public.....and has out-smarted himself. Manny will fight but a few more times. Enjoy it while you can. He is an all time great pugilist. Floyd, with all of his remarkable skills lack the will to be truly great in the biggest sense of the word. His legacy will look more like Holmes that Ali. He has earned it." ---November is half-way gone, but we don't need to keep counting ballots. It's a landslide. Fe'Roz has won the 2009 Reader of the Year award. His comments add to the website immeasurably, and he epitomizes the thoughtful, respectful, educated fan of pugilism we strive to cater to at TSS. Congrats, Fe'Roz, and please accept my thanks for being the valued member of this community that you are. Sincerely, Editor Mike
