Welcome Back To "The Destroyer" Pacquiao
By John Nguyen
Prior to the application of his current nickname “Pacman,” Manny Pacquiao was known as “The Destroyer.” And appropriately so. On his rise to superstardom, Pacquiao tore through his opponents with a viciousness and ferocity rarely seen, even in a sport as brutal as boxing.
In the fights leading up to Saturday night, though, something seemed to be missing. Back to back decisions over Marco Antonio Barrera and Juan Manuel Marquez appeared to mark the rebirth of a new Manny Pacquiao. The new Pacman was more measured, more cerebral than before.
The change was subtle, but very real. Prior to the aforementioned decisions, 21 of Pacquiao’s previous 22 victories came by way of knockout, and this was in the face of increasingly elite opposition. In his workman-like effort in the rematch with Barerra, Pacquiao won with very little suspense, competitive or otherwise. Against Marquez, he won a very entertaining, if controversial, decision, but Pacquiao didn’t seem as trigger-happy as his former self. It wasn’t that the fire had gone out; it just burned a little dimmer.
The general consensus was that this more methodical approach signified technical advances for Manny Pacquiao. Maybe he understood that his wild ways would shorten his shelf life as a fighter, and this was a way to preserve himself.
These explanations did make sense. It’s hard to criticize a guy for wanting to add new wrinkles to his game, especially if it will increase his longevity as a fighter. And it wasn’t like the rematches against Barrera and Marquez were bad fights. Manny still gave the fans their money’s worth, which is more than can be said for most elite fighters on the scene.
Still, I struggled with accepting these explanations. Where was the Pacquiao who cut Lehlo Ledwaba to pieces? What happened to the man who gave Marco Antonio Barrera the worst beating of his life in their first meeting? Rationalizations didn’t cut it. I’ll always be a fight fan before I’m a fight writer. Selfishly, I wanted the old Manny back.
Then came Saturday night, and the return of The Destroyer.
Pacquiao’s brutalization of David Diaz was a startling reminder to the boxing world that his identity as a fighter remains the same. The newest lightweight titlist demonstrated that, as much as we laud ring intelligence and craft, boxing is sanctioned violence, and violence is what we pay to see. From a fan’s perspective, all the strategy in the world doesn’t compensate for a warrior’s heart. This is why witnessing a Pacquiao fight is a totally different experience than watching a Winky Wright bout. No disrespect to Winky or ring technicians like him, but passion can’t be calculated, and Manny Pacquiao’s passion is the definitive reason he is the most beloved fighter on the planet.
Along with reacquainting us with the old Manny, Saturday night’s victory over Diaz made crystal clear to fight fans who currently sits atop the sport. Prior to pummeling Diaz, Pacquiao was at the top of many pound-for-pound lists by virtue of the retirement of the previous king, Floyd Mayweather. In essence, Pacquiao was made number one by default, with many reluctant to proclaim him as such following the controversial win over Marquez.
But Saturday night’s display of speed, power, and, most importantly, skill almost certainly eased any troubled consciences who had any reservations about placing Manny at the top of their list. The manner in which he won, along with the fact that he is in the process of conquering yet another weight class, exemplifies what pound-for-pound recognition is all about.
Pacquiao’s electrifying arrival at lightweight silenced all critics who questioned his northward migration, including me (see article entitled “Stay Put, Manny Pacquiao”). He has reached the pinnacle of his career when questions should cease, and we should just appreciate the privilege of witnessing an all-time great fighter in action.
Manny’s breathtaking display left fans wanting more, and speculating what his next move will be. There’s talk of a potentially epic war against 130-pound dynamo Edwin Valero. Rumors swirl about a possible 140-pound showdown with Ricky Hatton. Still, others dream big about the possibility of a meeting of boxing’s two biggest superstars: Manny Pacquiao vs. Oscar De La Hoya.
I remember my reaction the first time I read about a Manny vs. Oscar matchup. As I recall, I laughed out loud at the thought.
I’m not laughing anymore. I’ve learned my lesson. Now that The Destroyer is back, anything can happen.
Welcome back, Manny. Welcome back.

Yo don. As fans and PPV buyer, we have the right and can criticize whoever we want, but MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!!! Why you mention Floyd so much? When somebody doesn't like or doesn't care about something he leave alone. Now, don't get me wrong; I can give less if people love or hate him, but all the time I'm reading your comments Floyd is the fighter you most mention. You mention him even more than your boy Cotto. Why all the hate, man? Besides Pacman's #1 because Floyd retired. Peace.

I preferred "The Destroyer" as Manny's nickname from the start. However many other fighters it seems have adopted the alias.
It sounds good though, as an inside secret among hardcore fight fans, who relish the thought that another victim has again fallen to "the Destroyer".

It's just that it surprises me how much don says that he's a chicken, a pussy and all the other names, but still can't stop mentioning him. I don't like Cotto, nor Pacquiao, but I don't mention them 24/7 on every comment I post. It's just a surprise to me, but it's all good. Y'all can criticize Floyd all you want. Good to see you've learned your lesson. By now the TSS site should have realized Pac is nearing ATG greatness the likes of Ali and Robinson. You are fortunate to live at a time when a Pac showed the world what greatness in boxing is all about. Not some Gayweather trash ducking opponents yet American critics call him p4p. Shame!

I think a fight with Edwin Valero would be very easy for Manny now that he has improved his right hand arsenal. This is because Valero only depends on his power which is the left hand straight punch. At close distance fight also especially if Manny will just move his body close to the left hand side of Valero, that left straight of Valero would not work anymore. While Manny can still work up his uppercuts either left or right which is also getting stronger now. The short left hook of Manny is also strong in that position or he can do a quick out position combined with a lateral movement and work his way back in for a strong straight left punch. With that speed and power, Valero would only last until 10 rounds max. Watch out Valero because Manny is really aiming to knock you out because of all the things he has heard with you talking negative things about him!!!
I think the best fight for Manny right now would be Ricky Hatton. Followed by Juan Manuel Marquez, Nate Campbell and Joel Casamayor. While Juan Diaz and Katsidis still remain to be of a question because this two guys for me would not even last a max of 8 rounds with Manny.
I like the boxing improvements now of Manny even though I still love to see his old version of fighting style. It is also good for his health since he is getting older and we still want Manny to live a normal life after his boxing career. He deserves the best things in life after his career. Two to three more years of boxing is already enough for him.

"Besides Pacman's #1 because Floyd retired. Peace." now.. thats wrong.. even if floyd gayweather doesnt retire.. manny is still the P4P champ. cmon.. every floyd's fight is a boring fight. you can do a survey for that. and the real boxer dont choose the boxer he want to fight. (because he knew he can beat that kind of boxer..) actually floyd retire because he is afraid to fight some boxer that people want them to fight with. right? the true champ will not run away from their opponent. prove to the people that he is a P4P king by accepting all the fight and also winning it. and not only "winning" but a kind of win like manny won over diaz.. by the way.. can floyd throw over 90 punches in a round? coz manny can do that.. and not just punches.. power punches..

because mayweather runs backward in majority of his fights, on the other hand DID YOU EVER SEE THE PACMAN RUNS in any of his matches even with elite oppositions. The reason why he has having hard time fighting Marquez, because the man will run in intense pressure and seldom initiate a rumble. They said because he's a technical fighter but who wants a running technical fighter? I love boxing because because true warriors supposed to fight to the finish not to JUST FINISH THE FIGHT.

You have to take notice that each fight is customized. Team Pacquiao studies upcoming opponents and their techniques.
It's true that Manny has learned how to box. He did so beautifully in his last three fights. The difference with the Diaz fight is that he had the opportunity to take him down and he took it. This was not true for Marquez 2 and Barrera 2. He was also clearly more confident with the Diaz fight. Both Marquez and Barrera are better fighters than David Diaz and would have beaten him if they had the chance to fight.
Manny has developed a new approach to fighting, and it suits him better because of his speed. He can easily protect himself while waiting for those few precious moments to pummel his opponent. He's becoming a better professional and he never looked better in the ring. People want to see the big knockout, but they often miss the tremendous improvement in Manny's defense. Even staunch critic Emmanuel Steward finally gave in and praised Manny for a magnificent performance.

GUYS,
First of all we have no right to change his own choice of name
"PACMAN" ..it fits everything though, "BY NAME BY NATURE AND BY HIS ACHIEMENTS", the name is just perfect as a package of who he is.. besides too many names just add's confussion of who's #1 P4P..theres only one and only one
"PAC THE REAL MAN IN THE PLANET"..today and in the future
if he retire's because of age incapability.. or someone else posibly beat's him up because of age.
About FLOYD "MONEY" , he's saddened retirement could be of
many reasons. although I'm not judging him. FLOYD has already a lot of money to enjoy and yet he's still young as a champ. That's the reasons why people called it "premature". Secondly, people say that he is playing "smartness here" since he knows that their's a rivalry between who's #1 P4P he declare he's retirement emediately prior to "MANNY AND DIAS FIGHT"..knowing PACMAN is on the winning side, someone grab's he's crown without any doubt while he is still active on his career..so the retirement is the only solution..other than that
we for sure don't kwow his own personal reasons.

i just would like to comment on mr dan horgan's column on why calzaghe is tops on his list as p4p.i dont think being undefeated should be the basis on this issue.muhammad ali tasted defeat but still he was considered the greatest boxer of all time ,together with the likes of leonard, hagler, duran, hearns they all tasted defeat .one reason he's undefeated is bcoz of the quality of his opponent.after so many years in that division it's only now that he fought name boxers.i agree with mr.adam smith's observation that indeed pacman deserved to be the new p4p king.

I'm an admirer of Pacquiao, though two results profoundly disturb me about him. Who are the 2 BUMS that knocked him out? Where are they today? With they way Pac Man is lauded on this site, you all should be throwing ticker tape parades for the following two fighters: Rustico Torrecampo and Medgoen Singsurat. That's right. No typos in those names guys. They both put this ATG to sleep in the 3rd round. Old Rustico sports a putrid 14-8-5 record, while his counterpart Medgoen is at least a respectable 57-5. For all you Mayweather haters, at least Floyd doesn't have to explain being knocked out early -TWICE- by...who are these guys again??? Nope, PBFM doesn't have those indignities on his CV. Granted, Mayweather looked pitiful against Castillo in their first fight and lost. But he wasn't knocked out. Pac Man ATG? Nah. He needs to explain why two toughman caliber guys knocked him out before I anoint him a lightweight Ali. Sorry. Peace out.

allan floralde, even though I have a completely different opinion about Floyd from you, I respect what you say. Maybe Floyd retired to make fights bigger and make more drama into it, maybe not. But whatever the reason, I respect your opinion. About the P4P list that I saw, every list still had Floyd #1 over Pacman before he retired (Except Boxingscene, that had both tied at #1). And about the boring fights, and 90 power punches, is all matter of styles. Floyd's not a puncher; he's a boxer, a mover, and a stylist. He's not abrawler. I love his style, but if people doesn't like his style and prefer to see other fighters that's OK. I respect that. Peace dude.

Manny Pacquiao is a JOKE when he is called supposedly the best pound for pound fighter in the world. He has no skills, all he does is coming foward and throw punches like every little kid school does. So what if he beat up that no good bum Diaz. Floyd Mayweather did had MAD skills. When you see Floyd Mayweather do a lot of things in the TV, you KNOW you can't do that yourself. But I saw some part of the Pacquiao-Diaz fight and to tell you the truth anybody can do what Pacquiao does: throw wide punches like crazy until you've beaten the other guy. Any one can do that. But what Floyd Mayweather, Roy Jones and even Pernell Whitaker did? That's something else. That's some skills. Pacquiao's spot at the top is gonna be short-lived. Everybody, or better to say most people here, are antagonizing and loving the wrong fighters. They are hating the UNDEFEATED true best skilled fighter in the world, even if he's retired, and they are loving the bar-fighting, wide-puncher asian dude who's soon about to lose.....AGAIN.

Talking of JOE, is like comparing HAGLER to PACMAN.
Both these guys have no match for "PAC THE REAL MAN".
Honestly I don't even want to entertain this crappy discussion.
Plainly because these two for instance, were just "fighting challengers" vs PACMAN who is "demolishing champions"..again plain and simple. If hagler or Joe or whoever
step higher divisions and beat all of them until Ali's division, then possibly that's the time for evaluation..one of those for my oppinion of who's the one who posses the perfect picture as a true CHAMP. To me any boxer could get into the ring and box not to SLAP for instance. Slapping shows totally a wrong finish
of a true champ. Bottom line as of these days obviously no division champ that could match PACMAN not even in the past.

Manny Pacquiao is a good fighter but he is NOT the P4P best fighter in the world. And he is certainly NOT an all-time great. He is a crowd-pleasing fighter in an era that's saturated with non crowd-pleasing fighters. That is his allure. The first MAB fight was a good win, the second average. He drew with JMM and eked out a SD win in the second. He lost to EM then won impressively in the second and third installments (though EM was completely shot by the second fight and partially shot in their first affair). Pac Man has been STOPPED twice by nondescript opposition. A good fighter? Yes. A crowd-pleasing fighter? Yes. P4P the best fighter? No. An all-time great fighter?? Absolutely NOT.

Hey Perry, I know that punctuation is a lot to ask, and writing "you" as opposed to "u", etc, but my facts are straight and "ur" the one who needs to STFU. My source is boxrec. If you cut and paste Manny's name (of course you will be unable to spell Pacquiao) on that site and scroll down, you'll see that history states he lost via KO in round 3 twice to the aforementioned no-name fighters. Furthermore, youtube has the grainy broadcast of his knockout loss to Singsurat. He was absolutely bombed out in this fight (down 20-18 by all judges) and was writhing in pain on the canvas after being knocked down and out via a body shot. I'm sorry, but the facts are the facts.

Money May will return to the ring in 2009 to knock out Cotto. Money May wants a $100 million to come back, but I think he will settle for $40-to-$60 million. Expect the beatdown of Cotto's behind in 2009. I'm taking Cotto to stop Margarito come July 20-something -- I don't remember the day. But I'll be there cheering for him. He is the second best welter in the world. Money May is first. Manny will be the man at lightwelter, and he will kick Ricky Hatton's butt. Manny will make $75 million for that beatdown. Don't let plots and hype fool you. It's pay time for Pera Pac and Money May come 09. The year of the richest purses!Holla USA!

Shep, the Singsurat fight was Manny's last fight at 112 I believe. He was severely dehydrated trying to make weight for the bout and was actually stripped of the title even before he got in the ring because he could not shed the pounds. His body had grown too much for bantamweight. If I remember right he almost went into shock because of dehydration. As for the Torrecampo fight, he just got caught with a beautiful right. They were both young studs on the rise back then. Not making excuses as both are legitiate losses, but what makes Paquiao great is the level of energy he brings. You could watch all the tapes of all the greats, but he is really one of a kind in that you get the feeling he really cares about his fight. Once he gets in the ring, he forgets all the crap about money, politics, endorsements or even technique, he just wants to rumble!

Dennys L, have to disagree with you man. What I saw in this last fight was a very technical PacMan. He was throwing lead uppercuts and following up with right hooks. Sometimes switching them up for a right hook-right uppercut. Then he surprises Diaz with his straight left money shot, but only after setting him up with those two variations. He was also doing a lot of body work. He was slipping the straight and going to the body with the right hook. That's one heck of a difficult shot to time, since it involves slipping, shifting the feet and doing a low hook in one fluid movement. Not a move for beginners, and not a move for asian wide punchers.

I think the Pound-for-Pound title isn't always all about "boxing skills" which I would honestly say, Floyd have advantage over Manny... but come on, cowards can have boxing skills, let them have it... but what makes boxing ENTERTAINING is the heart of a lion that's in a fighter and I would also honestly say, Manny have more than anybody else, INCLUDING Floyd. I was DISAPPOINTED in that fight between Oscar and Floyd... what a boring fight it was... I can almost say, Floyd was a scared chicken just going around the ring... He is TOO SCARED to take the risk of losing and tainting his UNDEFEATED record... I was even surprised that Floyd won that fight... again, if P4P is all about boxing skills.. Floyd can have it... but I dont' think so as avid boxing fan... I would even say JM Marquez is a more technical fighter than Manny, but it's not all about that... I think this would be the equation:
Heart of a lion 60% + Boxing skills 40% = No. 1 P4P fighter
JMM: 45 + 35 = 80%
Floyd: 35 + 38 = 73%
Manny: 55 + 30 = 85%
It's a sin to put Floyd in the ranks of Oscar De La Hoya, Roy Jones, Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, etc... He just don't have the HEART OF THE LION... but Manny Pacquiao has it...

Didn't you guys even read this article many would have put Manny over Floyd even if he didn't retire. I'm telling PROMOTE PACQUAIO VS mayweather @ 140lbs anything is possible. I mean come on if they can put DLH on his list it shouldn't be a problem with mayweather comin out of retirement.

WHEN Mayweather comes out of retirement, he should step up and challenge Kelly Pavlik, not Pacquiao, with whom he'll carry a significant physical advantage. Mayweather - Pavlik. That I'd pay to see. In the old days, when there were fewer divisions (no gap between welter and middle), 147 pound guys would move up to test their mettle against the middleweight champ (and so on for light heavy, etc, Louis - Conn). It was not uncommon. If Floyd wants to retire the notion that he's afraid of legitimate guys, there's no better way for him to put that to rest than inking a deal with KP. That's a grand slam opportunity for his legacy. And he should fight at his natural weight. If he's more comfortable at 150 (and at his best at 150), come in at 150, not 160. I'm dreaming though because it will certainly not happen.

FLOYD MAYWEATHER IS THE LEGEND!!!!!!!!!!!!::
|
That "ENTERTAINING" and the "HEART OF A LION" crap sounds like don's fiancee, Anony. But oh well. No, Pound for Pound is not about "ENTERTAINIMENT". Pound for Pound is not a bout "HEART"either. You want "HEARTS"? Watch a soap opera of something. Pound for Pound is about achievements. And Floyd Mayweather accomplished much more in the ring than Pacquiao ever did. If Pacquiao has won the admiration of many fans, that's another story. The majority of the poeple who watch boxing, doesn't know anything about it. They don't know anything about defense, counterpunching, and footwork. And no, Floyd belongs along side Roy, De la Hoya (The man HE BEAT DUHHHHH), Sugar Ray and all the others.....Pacquiao, which doesnt have 0.000000002% of the boxing technique of ANY of them, is the one out of place.

running is what mayweather does...cotto boxes. he wasnt avoiding mosely he was counter punching and pickin his punches. before any more fans who dont know shit about boxing comment, go study what boxing is and the tactics. boxing is jus throwin haymakers and hoping that one knocks the other dude out. cotto hits hard, has heart, has speed, endurance, focus, and is a complete BOXER. margarito has a fight coming his way and i dont even waiste my breath on PBF anymore, he's a punk

Arturo:"boxing is jus throwin haymakers and hoping that one knocks the other dude out." That's boxing to you???? WOW!!! That's more of a street fight. RicardoTorres style. Oh well, I can understand why you think of boxing that way, since you're name is Arturo. LOL!!! Floyd fought an Arturo once, who fought the same way you describe boxing. He never made it the the 7th. Floyd Mayweather has "speed, endurance, focus, and is a complete BOXER" a HELL of lot more than Cotto. The only department Cotto has more than Floyd is punching power and strength. That's it. Floyd can also counterpunch ON THE MOVE, he can SHARPSHOOT, he can PICK his shots and weave. Cotto can't do that. Margarito is gonna prove it very clearly, why Cotton is a joke.

Angie And Goody...23 Years Later
Twenty three years later after they seconded Marvin Hagler and Ray Leonard in Las Vegas, Goody Petronelli and Angelo Dundee crossed paths again. This time, it was at Foxwoods. Photo/friend of TSS "The Iceman" John Scully reports there were only pleasantries exchanged. Goody didn't debate the split decision victory enjoyed by Leonard, which to this day Hagler disputes.
