4 Question Flurry: More Max
By Michael Woods
Max Kellerman is always armed with an opinion, and like any good debater, two or three responses if somebody comes back at him with a counter. TSS always enjoys a chat with the passionate, intense New Yorker, who can always be relied on to furnish a stance, and then back it up with ample evidence.
Manny Steward worked analysis on the last HBO show (Pacquiao vs. Diaz), and we found ourselves thinking, “What would Max think?” So we reached out to Max, and fired some queries at him. We do the same now and again with Larry Merchant, in a segment we call “More Merchant.” We plan on touching base with Max now and again, and getting his thoughts on the theater of the unexpected. Here’s Installment 1 of “4 Question Flurry: More Max.”
Q) Is Pacman, coming off his win over David Diaz, the top guy in the sport, pound for pound?
Max) Yes. I have to put in a caveat, he was in with a good fighter, not a world beater, in Diaz. Hey, Mayweather fought Gatti, of course he’s going to look excellent. Now, Calzaghe is in the mix, he was in against Hopkins, who he has a great body of work, but if he does fight Roy, that might hurt his standing in the pound for pound ranking. Even if it is a business decision, that’s the sort of decision we make all the time in life. You don’t penalize a guy because he takes stiffer competition, and doesn’t look great, as Calzaghe did. But Manny is the top, in absence of Floyd.
Q) Now, if Cotto beats Margarito on July 26, in impressive fashion, does he leapfrog Pacquiao, as top pound for pounder?
Max) I don’t think so. Cotto’s fight with Mosley could’ve gone either way. Now, I think Marquez beat Pacquiao twice, but Marquez seems closer to his peak than does Mosley. But Pacquiao has risen in modern history, from flyweight to lightweight, and that’s a historical accomplishment. Back to Cotto…Cotto/Margarito on paper looks like a welterweight Corrales/Castillo. It titillates me to think about that when the bell rings. If Cotto beats Margarito he is the welterweight champion of the world, though Paul Williams may have something to say on that. Now, if Cotto beats Margarito, then I think Oscar will fight Cotto. Oscar has the heart of a lion, he’s an extremely tough guy who’s been penalized because he’s not Sugar Ray Leonard. He takes on challenges, and competes with, but doesn’t always win, against the very best. Sugar Ray beat Hagler, Hearns, Duran, Benitez. If Cotto takes on Oscar, I think Oscar has a chance to win. Cotto was even with Mosley, and Mosley is no better than De La Hoya.
Q) Does Wladimir Klitschko need to win in a certain fashion on July 12 against Tony Thompson to keep from being rendered irrelevant, or, more irrelevant? And has his strategy of trying to collect all the belts been a wise move?
Max) Wlad makes so much money with his own promotional company, German TV, American TV, so realistically, business-wise, no, he doesn’t need to win a certain way. In terms of American boxing fans, yes. Sam Peter is the one guy, if Wlad meets him again and beats him, he is universally regarded as the heavyweight champion. If a Peter fight doesn’t come off, then every fight Wladimir is in becomes only a debate for guys like us.
Q) Is Floyd Mayweather coming back?
Max) Listen, Floyd has the Mayweather brand. UFC fans know him, WWE fans, reality TV fans, they all know him. His brand is “the best” in the world, record breaker at the gate. In a rematch with Oscar, what was the upside? It wouldn’t do as much business, so that might hurt the brand. If he loses, and his father beats him, he wouldn’t be able to handle that. And there’s the issue of him cutting off his father’s legs, not getting the payday… If Cotto beats Margarito, and fights Oscar, and Oscar wins, Floyd will fight again, in a superfight, Cinco de Mayo, 2010.
FYI Kellerman will be working the Cotto/Margarito fight, as well as the Judah/Clottey fight, on August 2.

Hey TSS, I'm back! I just want to say I agree with Max when he said Cotto and Mosley are equal. Their fight could' ve went either way, and Cotto ducked the rematch. Oscar is a warrior at heart so it is natural for him to fight Cotto ( a young lion ) for supremacy in the heart department. I think oscar will knock him out! Holla.

I'm not only passionate about boxing but realistic. I understand and respect Max choice on DLH vs Cotto but I believe in my heart we haven't seen the peak of Cotto's talent. That fight with Mosley was close TRUE but Cotto did win and more than just a win, he showed he is always improving in every fight. So by the time he reaches DLH (if he wins Margarito), he will be a better boxer and a more dangerous one. July 26th is the date.

Cotto beat Mosley easily in my book, wasnt at all close. Cotto hurt him in the early rounds with body shots and Mosley clinched a ton, late in the fight Mosley became the aggressor because he knew he had no chance at a decision and Cotto outboxed him. No need for a rematch. Wlad is irrevelant and will be unless he unifies the titles or fights his bro. All this talk of Cotto-DLH-Floyd is nonsense, Margarito is the spoiler in the mix -- his ruining Cotto's resume come July 26. Let's see Floyd or DLH step up and face Margarito. Also I'm so tired of this p4p BS, seriously its turning into a NEVERENDING discussion that just goes in circles. Its like the retarted BS college sports deals with , BCS/AP Poll -- its never going to be right. It all depends on ONE person's opinion, and everyone's is different.

Has Kellerman "ever played the game?" He is the Howard Cosell of the 21th Century. Just a little more retarded. Mosley-Cotto fight could have gone one way. To Cotto. What is Kellerman drinking? Cotto boxed Mosley's ear off. Marquez won twice against Pacman, the canvas kissing contest. I was just teasing donputo. Margarito ain't gonna beat Cotton, and Oscar gets stop by Cotton. Yea, Mayweather will be back. However, he will come back to knock out Cotton. Kellerman is the commentator from a comedy show. Fo' sure!

I don't know about the Cinco the Mayo 2010 comment .Cotto made it hard on himself by relaxing too much against Mosley.Oscar should think about making some more money and losing against Pacman so a Floyd fight can have a shot to outskill the current p4p champion.

There was one question left out while talking about Cotto. What IF Cotto losses to Margarito? Would Oscar fight Cotto with more certainty or would he fight Margarito? One more thing, if Mayweather is completely retired, why do analyst keep on bringing him up? The guy left the sport already, stop making comparisons. If Pacman or Calzaghe are the best P4P fighters at the moment why not call them the best P4P instead of attaching Floyd in the mix?

Marquez beat Pac on the two fights they had? Max is smoking big time and needs a drug test! Watch the tape over again and score it and you will see who really won. Max is a hater to Pacquiao since the beginning and always questioned his talent. Even though Pac already decked Marquez a total of 4 times in two meetings, he still thinks Marquez is better and beat Pac? What an expert boxing analyst. By the way Max, Pac is already #1 pound for pound even if Mayweather didn't retire, with the performance he had against a lightweight champion and olympian, Pac would have been #1 pound for pound anyway. Pac has only fought Hall of Famers a total of 7 times and how many times has Floyd fought future Hall of Famers? One in De La Hoya right? Max suck!

since in the beginning that manny fight in the u.s. soil, max kellerman has been an anti-pacquaio, and an anti-filipino sentiments in his boxing comments. pre pacquaio vs marquez fight, he already predicted in hbo that manny would lose the fight against marquez, and he was wrong, pacquaio won the close fight, because he was tha aggressive fighter, connected more of the power punches, and ofcourse the knockdown. it is still there in you tube about how he hated manny pacquaio, that manny is not an all around fighter, and not to be taken as a pound for pound best. now, kellerman wants to jump in the wagon, but still beleived that marquez won the fight, i say to you max, can you be true to your opinion once in a while. we filipinos are nice peolple, we are friendly and work hard. you see manny help diaz after the knockdown? you heard manny never brag about his win against marquez, these are the traits of being a filipino, we are strong mentally, even when we dont open our mouth. we have only one request to hbo as filipinos who subscribe to hbo. pleaaaaase dont put max kellerman in hbo fights from now on, or you will lose thousands of filipino subscriber in hbo telecast fight. we cant take his lie anymore and his venom of hate. thank you

He is a joke and BOXING FANS know that he is a great talent but his career isnt great because it lacks great victories REAL career defining fights and his whole career he never once intended to clean none of his divisionS much less the pool talented welterweight division

Salt lover : in Mix with p4p with mayweather, vs. his castillo 1 fight many thought castillo won but mayweather won by Unanimous decision in Pac situation 1st fight with marquez down 3x in rd 1 and 1 judge give Pac a 10-7 score instead of 10-6 which give them a draw.
In Pac 2nd fight win with JMM it was a close fight but still knockdown in the middle of the rounds just prove of justification of the fight.
Its not UNANIMOUS decision its SPLIT decision its fair decision and PAC got an W.

In fairness to Max Kellerman, he was not a Manny Pacquiao hater or critic at the beginning. Back in the first Marco Antnoio Barrera fight in 2004 he had an article asking everyone to join the PACMAN bandwagon after he KO'ed Barrera. But i don't agree with him that Marques won those two fights against Manny Pacquiao.

Mosley was no better than De La Hoya when they were both 27 years old. Today, Mosley is clearly a better fighter because he fights and trains regularly, while De La Hoya only does it part-time. When you're 36, the only way to keep your edge is to stay in absolute tip-top physical condition. Shane is still doing it. Oscar isn't.

Okay Mad Max, let me play devil's advocate and attempt to rebut your premise that DLH wins against Cotto. You contend that "Cotto was even with Mosley, and Mosley is no better than De La Hoya." Using your logic: Cotto=Mosley and Mosley=DLH and Mosley beat DLH and Cotto beat Mosley then by logically extension it follows that Cotto beats DLH." a=b, b=c, b/c + a/b = a/c and your contention doesn't logically support your premise. Therefore your premise is flawed. Basically I see DLH coming out strong against Cotto early and then petering out in the late rounds. That has been his motus operandi and the reason he lost against the likes of Mosley, Trinidad and Mayweather. I have no dog in this fight (no pun intended) and have a great deal of respect for DLH, Cotto, Mosley, et al. Just having fun with logical thinking at your expense.

Marquez would remain a champ if it was a paddy cake game not a boxing sport. How can anyone say that he won those two fights with Pacquiao when he was the one who kissed the canvas? I can understand if it was a one sided beating, but that never was the case. They both traded punches and both got hit. Marquez wasn't able to really hurt Pacquiao. Pacquiao put him on the canvas and also hurt him in the later rounds. Marquez was given the chance but never followed through and came up short. If we follow Max's way of scoring, the world of boxing would be boring as hell. Pacquiao helped put boxing on the map again.

Why would Max Kellerman's opinion matter? How many fights has he actually seen? An old guy like me may not have fought either but I have been covering the fight game before this kid learned what a jab is. I have seen the best.
He will gain credibility in the future but he is just too inexperienced right now to be an analyst to be taken seriously.
Cotto will knock out Dela Hoya. JMM and Pacquiao had close fights, with only one of them getting knocked down, several times. JMM had to foul to survive. Pavlik is the next great white hope. Calzaghe is a slapper/hugger.

Goodness, the first fight with Marquez I think that he got lucky for one of the judges not scoring the first round correctly that's why there was a draw. The second fight I clearly saw Pacquaio ahead more than a point. In a third fight Pacman will demolish him believe me. I had Cotto way ahead of Mosley and I don't think Oscar my man has a chance with Cotto though. With the Cotto and Margarito fight I don't care who wins because I like to watch them both. Both can crack Oscar/mayweather any day. Kellerman is just a mayweather lover like these monkeys.

Marquez won:
|
In the first fight, Marquez won eight rounds, Pacquiao won four. Subtract three points for three knockdowns, and Marquez won 113-112. In the second fight, Marquez won seven rounds, Pacquiao won five. Subtract one point for the one knockdown, and Marquez won 114-113.

Max Kellerman is no racist, he is just an idiot. I went back to review the fights between JMM and Pacman. I also checked out everything Kellerman said and did immediately after the bouts, and as somebody wrote, he voted for Pacman, though he claimed that JMM could have won. I think that he says contradictionary stuff to be a controversial commentator, i.e. Howard Cosell. Of course, he is "no Larry Merchant" or even Cosell. His purpose is to draw butts to view the cablecasts, so take what he says with a grain of salt. In fight one, Pacman knock JMM down three times and rocked him 11 times. JMM rocked Pacman once. In bout twice, Pacman knocked JMM down once and rocked him 16 times, three serious. JMM rocked Pacman once, again, in the second round. Just with these stats, Pacman would have won the bouts in a runaway fashion. They are pro boxers, not amateurs, though JMM fights like one and believe he deserves to win. Change the rules and let him go to the Olympic Games. He will get beat there too. Casamayor is going to give him a professional Olympic-style whooping come September. Fo' sure!

Mosley is no better than DeLa Hoya? WTF! Max has always overrated the GoldenGirl but that comment Dropped Max's stock a few points in my book.
If a then prime, well-conditioned and very motivated Oscar thaught B-Hops Livershot was bad 4 years ago. Cotto's Lethal Left is on another level. He's the best Bodyshot artist since MickeyWard. My one advice for Oscar if he dare gets in the ring with Miguel. Depends Under Garments. Miguel will break through Oscars Goldplated body like a bull in china plate shop. Cotto in 7 Assuming Oscar isn't his wearing belt protector up to his FOREHEAD like he usually does in big fights. If so make it Cotto in 10. Oscar AINT GOING 12 like Sugar (Slightly Slower) Shane did giving Cotto his toughest test to date.
Shane is truly a great fighter & warrior Who else would dare challenge a Vernon Forrest and go up to 154lbs to fight Winky Wright in there primes TWICE each when they didn't have to?
Not Oscar! That's the difference. 4/ 5 of the Mosley losses came from men De LaHoya wouldn't be caught dead in the ring with. And 5th one is from the man that will retire him he gets the chance to fight DLH.

I can see how Max and so many other people who watch boxing love the style of Cotto, and may be overlooking the work that Margarito put in as a pro since 1994. Cotto is someone who improves with each fight, but right now, he isn't as polished as Margarito. To the untrained eye, when watching Margarito people usually only notice his aggression and his wide swings, but no matter what he does, his defense is always there- he gives way more than he takes. He blocks shots with his gloves that only seem to land, and he slips, weaves, slides with shots. It's subtle, because his style is unorthodox, but he's not crude or easy to hit. He's a boxer / counter puncher / slugger, and people find out in the ring that he's not as basic as he looks outside the ring. And when he does get hit, he usually smiles, nods his head, then fights harder. His chin has to be one of the best ever. He throws at least one hundred shots per round, many landing with accuracy and great force. He hits at least as hard, possibly harder than Cotto, and is much busier. People know he's fit, but his stamina should be properly viewed as not only good, but exceptional... His underrated skills, underrated versatility, exceptional stamina and chin may be too much for anyone, not just Cotto. Cotto may never make it to DeLaHoya. He may never be the same after this fight.

"It Takes A Special Man"
"It takes a special man to lace them on and step into a ring to either hurt or be hurt. It's always been my opinion that the greatest fighters (not necessarily the most commercially successful) are probably born with that never give up until I'm completely done attitude. It can be nurtured over time, but you either have it or you don't. When adversity hits, and it will, this instinct will allow you to reach inside for additional strength and determination. Ali, Louis, Gatti, Corrales had it....Marquez and Pacquiao have it. De La Hoya, for all the great things he did as a boxer never had it, Tyson didn't have It, Cotto doesn't have it, and as much as I hate to admit it because I loved to watch him fight, Chavez didn't have it. 99.9% of us don't have it either. That's why we're not all fighters and we can sit here and judge these courageous men from the comfort of our computers."
