Tua To Meet Arreola

By John Matheson

This piece comes from FOTSS John Matheson, of the New Zealand Sunday News. Thanks John!

David Tua is one fight away from redemption.

That's the remarkable news today as Sunday News can reveal the Tuaman has signed
up for a title elimination bout against unbeaten American Chris Arreola.

The prize for the winner of that match-up is a money-spinning date with WBC
heavyweight champion Samuel Peter.

It means Tua whose career has been cruelly hijacked by legal battles will
finally get the chance to try and land one of the belts he last challenged for
against Lennox Lewis in 2000.

Last night Tua's New York-based promoter Cedric Kushner met with representatives
from US pay TV network HBO and was about to ink the deal.

Arreola's promoter Dan Goossen was also believed to be at the meeting.

"Things are happening quickly," Kushner told Sunday News.

"The fight against Arreola could happen as early as September.

"The winner of that fight is guaranteed a shot at the title.

"I'm excited for David. If anyone deserves the chance to fight on sport's
biggest stage again, it's him."

Tua has cancelled his scheduled fight in the Ukraine on July 12.

Kushner explained that the stakes were too high to risk an injury so close to
the Arreola fight.

It will mean Tua will go into the Arreola bout after a year of inactivity
following a combination of family tragedies and on-going court action against
his former managers conspired to keep him out of the ring.

Tua, though, is unconcerned about not having fought since his second round
knockout of Cerrone Fox last September his seventh consecutive win since his
comeback in 2005.

Said Kushner: "David told me that he feels that if he gets 60 days training in
before the fight he can take on anyone, anywhere."

And Tua won't be starting from scratch when he joins up with his Arizona-based
trainer Roger Bloodworth next month.

He's been sparring with a number of local boxers in his south Auckland gym in
recent weeks and is understood to have again acquired the services of the highly
sought after personal trainer Lee Parore to fine-tune his fitness before heading
to the US.

"David's in a very good place both physically and mentally," Kushner said.

"He's been patient, waited for his opportunity and now it looks like it's here."

Tua whose bout against Lewis in Las Vegas still rates as the single biggest
sporting event to appear on New Zealand television will need to be at his peak
to get past Arreola and earn the right to fight for a belt.

Despite his inactivity, Tua is ranked 23rd in the world while all four of
boxing's world governing bodies have Arreola in the top 15.

The WBC ranks him as the No 7 heavyweight in the world and the IBF has him
ranked No 10.

Last week he took his record to a perfect 24-0 when he destroyed the previously
unbeaten heavyweight Chazz Witherspoon.

Bloodworth is excited about his charge going up against Arreola, whose profile
has exploded since the win against Witherspoon.

"Going up against Dave will be a big step up for him," Bloodworth, a former
trainer of champion Evander Holyfield, said.

"And I can tell you Dave is looking forward to stepping up his competition and
getting to that championship fight he craves."

Spinach Chin:  Remember when Tua had a workrate like Arreola's? Love Tua but Arreola's work ethic and Tua's lack of looks like a win for "Nightmare", fat as he is. Tua getting KO'd seems unlikely, but at 36 who knows????????????

rudy:  U right Spinach, Tuaman looked like the real thing when he burst onto the HW scene with that brutal beatdown of Ruiz and then that great FOY w/Ike Ibeabuchi.....dude just seemed to lose his drive/passion to fight after a few losses and ofcourse all the crap promotional drama. He's been on a nice winning streak knocking out bums...could surprise us against Arreola, but I gotta go with Nightmare stopping him in 10.

Saul:  I heard this is going to be at the Home Depot Center in Carson Cali. If this is true im going. Arreola by KO.

Yuvie:  I like Arreola and hope he does well but I hope he's not another hype job who will fall at his first big name hurdle. Just look at Fields, all that hype then he gets knocked out quick. The heavyweights are a joke. Haye, I'm a fan of, is another one. All the hype then he might end up getting knocked out by Barret too. Tell you what though, if they both do well and remain a force in the heavyweight division, nothing sounds more exciting than a David Haye/Chris Arreola fight.

Smiley C:  Arreola is not a hype job. He is on the job. Been on it since he was about 10 years old. His problem is that he is also on the food. A lot of it the wrong kind. Clean up his diet, and he cleans up the heavyweight class. Fo' sure!

RIVERSIDE:  I SAW ARREOLA BEAT THE CRAP OUT OF WITHERSPOON, IT 'S THE FIRST TIME I SEE HIM FIGHT, I LIKE HIS MEXICAN MENTALITY, YOU HIT ME AND I'LL HIT YOU, HE IS GOING TO BE A FAN FAVORITE IF HE KEEPS ON WINNING, I EXPECT HIM TO KNOCK OUT TUA
Wednesday Jul 2, 2008 03:27:07 PM
Spinach Chin:  Ditto Saul, I'l l be there if the fight lands in so Cal. Could be a real good fight.
Wednesday Jul 2, 2008 05:45:05 PM
959 Santa:  Im turning into a big Arreola fan. I hope he destroy's Tua. Nothing against Tua but I like Arreola much more. Arreola reminds me of a bigger version of Jack Dempsey. Also Arreola reminds me of a slower version of Tyson. I think Arreola could be the next big thing to hit Boxing. Goooo Riverside!!!.
Wednesday Jul 2, 2008 06:27:00 PM
perry:  tua don't get knocked out just ask lennox lewis and ike ibeabuchi...he's over the hill though...inactivity is the enemy...he'll lose a lopsided decision but won't be kayoed fo sure.
Friday Jul 4, 2008 07:39:41 AM
autxxx:  i dont think david goes down....arreola is just his first step to the big fight....and i go 100% for david tua in his usual KO style..
Tuesday Jul 8, 2008 06:00:35 PM
Ali:  Tuaman never: repeat Never! went down in his career! so Arreola got his hands full! but, kudos to the kid for accepting the challenge, all other so-called "top HW fighters" are SCARED of Tuaman! It will end by KO! (what round? that is the question!) if Arreola holds on for a decent numbers of rounds, then he's the man! (I hope he won't be like Ruiz)
Tuesday Jul 8, 2008 08:41:57 PM
Hape:  The Tuaman has had his fair share of badluck lately but as he said he is a patient man and his time will come no doubt. Arreola will feel the power like nothing hes felt before. If he chooses to get into a brawl with David he will go down....The Tuaman KO'D I dont think so....Arreola has never been hit with the ferocity of Tuas power so well see, it will be a good fight anyhow..

Angie And Goody...23 Years Later
Twenty three years later after they seconded Marvin Hagler and Ray Leonard in Las Vegas, Goody Petronelli and Angelo Dundee crossed paths again. This time, it was at Foxwoods. Photo/friend of TSS "The Iceman" John Scully reports there were only pleasantries exchanged. Goody didn't debate the split decision victory enjoyed by Leonard, which to this day Hagler disputes.
