Kimbo Slice Fights Way Out of Losing
By David A. Avila
Streetfighter Kimbo Slice survived to fight another day and mixed martial arts made its debut on free television like a teen-ager making a first appearance at a prom.
Elite XC put its best foot forward and scored a knockout with several competitive and explosive bouts on CBS and national television on Saturday night at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
Slice, with his experience in hundreds of street fights including many caught on video, needed every ounce of knowledge to subdue Britain’s James “Colossus” Thompson (14-9), who entered as a question mark opponent, but left as a gallant warrior with a better than expected chin.
Thompson deserves full applause.
The Englishman came to fight and showed every weakness of Slice’s arsenal, especially avoiding the take down. The Miami strongboy just couldn’t find the antidote to Thompson’s takedowns and found himself on the ground several times.
If not for Slice’s trainer Bas Rutten, think of the possible outcome.
Instead, Slice was able to use his strength and the advice of his trainer to escape several near fatal strangleholds and mounts. After the second round, as Thompson pinned him against the cage, it was only a lack of time in the round that saved Slice to fight another day.
When Slice stood up to begin the third round, he looked like a beaten warrior in search of landing a knockout blow. It wasn’t that the Floridian couldn’t land his punch, it was Thompson’s chin that seemed able to absorb hellacious blows.
Within seconds of the third round Slice found the mark for his punches, including a right hand that busted open Thompson’s cauliflower ear. Blood immediately flowed and suddenly Slice had an obvious target.
He made good use of the ear.
Several more right hands, including a pinpoint right uppercut, snapped Thompson’s head up and down like a bobble head doll. The referee immediately stopped the fight though the rugged Brit never went down 36 seconds into the third round.
Slice collapsed to the floor.
“I’ve got a long way to go,” said Slice (3-0) after the fight.
Maybe so, but he never gave up. Even when Thompson was piling punch after punch on his noggin as he helplessly hung on.
He passed his first real test.
But MMA as a whole does not have a long ways to go. Perhaps female fighting as a whole got a boost when Gina Carano battled Kaitlin Young (4-2) in a brave display of tactical fighting and gritty determination.
Carano (6-0) proved too strong for Young, who never gave up, but whose face sustained bruising and swelling from withstanding right hands like a windmill.
More importantly, female fighting, which has always been overlooked especially in boxing, was able to showcase technique, power and nonstop action between the two women warriors.
It’s about time that America gets to see what only a few know: female fighters provide the best action.
Carano pummeled Young and forced a knockout at the end of the second round.
In the battle for the EliteXC middleweight title, Rob Lawler kept his title when opponent Scott Smith was accidentally poked in the eye by a finger and told the ringside doctor he couldn’t see. The doctor stopped the fight.
According to MMA rules if a title fight does not go beyond three rounds, then it is ruled a no contest, therefore Lawler kept his title. But for almost three rounds, Smith and Lawler battered each other relentlessly. Then came the finger to the eye and action was stopped at 3:28 of the third round.
Another middleweight fight saw Joey “The Boxer” Villasenor stop Phil “The New York Badass” Baroni with a series of punches and knees. It was a left hook that started the downfall for Baroni. After that, Villasenor unleashed the power to force a technical knockout at 1:11 in the first round.
It was the first time that regular television had ever shown an MMA show live for the entire country. On a whole, you couldn’t have asked for anything better. It was MMA at its best and most colorful.

I dont think Robbie Lawler was that impressive and Kimbo Slice even less so. It looked like both of those fighters were saved by a higher power and I certainly don't mean their respective Makers: more like TV execs and the referee. Kimbo obviously was gassed- if it went 1 more minute their poster boy would have been done. there was no reason to stop the fight when the Brit was still defending himself-and never even went down. If the sight of blood made the producers uneasy they are putting their money into the wrong sport. All in all the womans fight saved an otherwise boring night. I'll stick with the UFC.

I hope boxing does this soon. Imagine the Marquez vs Vasquez 3 on ABC. How about Mayweather vs DeLaHoya 2, maybe not we want to create new fans. Instead Cotto vs Margarito. It is time to take advantage of NBC, FOX, ABC, and other channels.

Kimbo is a Bimbo, and Samuel Peter is a Fatso. Maybe they should settle the hype between the two hurt businesses. Kimbo knocks off people's ears. Peter tries to knock off people's heads.
Let these two combatants get it on -- wherever. Maybe somewhere in Africa, and call the show "A Tumble in the Jungle" -- because both would fall over from fatigue. In the bout, Kimbo big bald spot will be a target, and Peter's big belly would be a target. I can see it now. "Battle of the sciences -- "The Sweet One versus The Savage One: Shiny Head versus Shiny Belly. Holla!

Teacher, I read you. If MMA can do it, why not boxing? Twenty years ago it was common to see big fights on regular tv. If MMA can help boxing get back on the main tube than I'm all for it.

Kimbo is a good fighter, for the street. he was right to say he has a long way to go, and the Brit. lost through politics. KIMBO HAS BEEN BLOWN UP AND IF HE HAD THE COLOSSUS ON THE GROUND HAMMERING AWAY, the reff would NOT have let the bell ring so they could fight again. Kimbo was set to win from the start, it's too bad, he is a good fighter, but he hasn't earned the right to be titled "Legend" nor the right to win the fight last night

To quote Sugar Ray Leonard," It'll never happen".Teacher, great fights on free TV are only a distant memory.Boxers and Boxing promoters are way to short-sighted and greedy to make this happen.A perfect example of both is Oscar de la Hoya.As a boxer, his idea of a "Gift for the fans" was getting paid millions for a sparring session/ infomercial leading up to a travesty of a rematch. As a promoter,he has yet to develop a single star in 8 years!.And the putrid undercard (not to mention main event) on DLH-PBF 1 was a wasted oppurtunity to get more casual fans interested in Boxing.

I'm sorry, but I can't see how the author thought that was a great show.
Gina Carano came in 4.5 lbs. overweight against Young. Giving her an unfair weight advantage to help overpower Young. The audience should have booed Carano for her nonsense.
The Kimbo-Thompson fight was lame. It's not that Thompson's chin is good, but Kimbo's power is overrated. Who has Kimbo knocked out except fat guys on YouTube and a fat Tank Abbott? Also, Thompson had side control and was stood up for no reason. The stoppage was premature. After the ref stepped in, Thompson started protesting the decision.

I think that Slice does have a long way to go, and no skills were shown in the ring, he only won because of an busted ear, if the opponent did not have that issue Slice would have lost, in my opinion it was not a fare fight and he lost, he did not hold his own in the ring, its easy fighting street bums and drunks, but a true professional fight like a worrier, he need more than lot of work , he need to stay with the street. definetly stop smoking and drinking and focus on his career so he can posess the skills he should have.

Kimbo wouldn't make it in the UFC along with 3/4 of the other fighters on the card that night period!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Carano's was the best, they fought and fought some more.
Hey Eugene the 4 1/2pds. must not have been a big deal as far as the rules go,they let them fight and Young didn't complain.Plus the fact remains Carano only had three week's to train for this fight.Could you imagine what would of happened to Young if Carano came 5pds. lighter and her cardio up to par? She was gassed and still won.

Only a good show for those who cheer for mma's demise - that thing was awful! Kimbo was everything we thought - a joke that EliteXC made sure wouldn't lose (even to a can like Thompson)....same goes for 'Crush'. Ugly play for ratings.

That show sucked...period..it made me sick considering i study Muay Thai/Judo . I thought I was watching WWF with the booty shakin, long drawn out entrances, and announcing that would not get off Kimbo's nutsack.
If the main event wasn't fixed, then the ref clearly gave the advantage to Kimbo, who was getting beat down in the 2nd round by Thompson. If it had been someone remotely in shape or with skill, the ref would have had to stop the fight regardless if the company wanted Kimbo to win. Then again why would you have a guy fight in a main event who's riding a 3 fight losing streak all by knockout? (Especially when the last guy who beat him was featured in the first fight!) Instead of Thompson that guy should have fought Kimbo.
Anyway. Baroni needs to give it up (The guy never backs up his mouth). And yes Carano was overweight by 4.5 lbs but it was still a great fight along with the Lawler/Smith fight. But overall I was dissapointed in the quality of the show. The WEC event featuring Faber vs. Pulver fight should have been on CBS. Then again its ran by Zuffa, which effectively is ran by Dana White.

Agreed, this bill was very low standard. But the WEC show. (I apologise for the copy and paste from Savage Science).
Wow. I'm speechless. What an amazing performance by these two blokes. Pulver is incredible, the whacks he took, and then he just grins and nods his head. Faber is extremely talented, very strong, and has the laid back charisma and boyish charm, to become as he says, this sports first real superstar (as in he will become the pivitol face for the game, taking it to the common people, especially the common teenage female people). As for me. Well as a newcomer from two weeks ago, what more of a welcome could I want to cross from the squared circle into the caged octagon, than a man named Miguel Angel Torres coming in to mariachi music and looking like Jorge Arce with an extra 5 inches. The man carried the mexican warrior mentality and just won me completely. BJ Penn was a great way to introduce me to the sport, Faber v Pulver was a thrilling way to show what incredible match ups it can make, but my flag carrying t-shirt wearing this is the man I want to follow in this game loyalty, belongs, as it should, to a mexican. Miguel Angel Torres, you the man.
Yuvie. I couldn't agree more with you. Once The Savage Science is established and fully launched in August, we should only have links between the two and shouldn't need articles (or posts, I admit) on both. Montiel fights a blinder, and our site doesn't have an article? Come on TSS. Anyway Yuvie, there is a brief piece on espn boxing, and hopefull our Pinoy Pal at boxing videos online may be able to come up with the goods and get a tape downloaded from Mexican tv or some such. He has the full Mijares Munoz fight if you haven't seen it yet. Toonoy andy

I thought the card was entertaining. I do agree that the lady with the 4 1/2 pound weight advantage had an unfair advantage. I give credit for the heart of the woman that took the fight for being a real fighter, but a fighter should never be put at that kind of disadvantage. I mean she had to probably lose some strength to make weight where the other person didn't. It usually doesn't end well for the person who sacraficed, at least in bouts I've witnessed. The action moved fast from one card to another. I like the idea of this league, or whatever you call it, because they are trying to make stars and not just a brand. The UFC is for the brand and not caring much for its fighters. So the fighters there make peanuts, but if stars are born perhaps some of these fighters can get the paydays they deserve. Kimbo does have a long way to go but you have to give him some credit for avoiding getting caught in the arm bar. So he has learned something because it that had of happened that would have been all she wrote. The stoppage should have been delayed to see if Thompson truly couldn't go on and I didn't like the call but Kimbo isn't the ref.

Playing Matchmaker: Williams/Cotto, Pavlik/Abraham Winners Meet
"I wouldn't mind paying 50 dollars for a Paul Williams /Miguel Cotto fight with Margarito/Clottey in the undercard. Or Jermain Taylor/Paul Williams with a fight between Kelly Pavlik/Arthur Abraham on the same night. A set up like that would be good for boxing 'cause the fans would see four good fighters in one night and possibly see the two winners fight in the near future.Too bad boxing doesn't think about the fans the way fans think about boxing." ---TSS reader Arturo plays matchmaker
