Margarito-Cotto In Century City L.A.
By David A. Avila
LOS ANGELES-Mexico’s Antonio Margarito and Puerto Rico’s Miguel Cotto met inside the Century Plaza Hotel in Century City on Tuesday. If you don’t know Los Angeles, it’s a business district constructed 40 years ago that was used as the locale for one of the Planet of the Apes movies.
The motion picture featured the civilized apes versus the Neanderthal-like humans in all out war.
Margarito versus Cotto will be like that: All out war.
Whenever you pit a Mexican world champion against a Puerto Rican world champion you can bet that both countries will be frozen business-wise. Most will be glued to their television sets to see whose fighter beats who?
It’s all about bragging rights.
According to one source, Puerto Rico holds a big edge right now over Mexico something like 38 to 20. That’s not written in granite but it’s probably true. Last March Margarito bit into that lead with a crushing defeat of former IBF titleholder Kermit Cintron of Puerto Rico.
Now it’s Cotto’s turn or is that vice versa?
“These are two guys who have thrilled us over the years with their courage and tenacity,” said Bob Arum, whose Top Rank company promotes both fighters. “Mexico and Puerto Rico is the great, great rivalry in the sport of boxing.”
During the luncheon Top Rank showed a film given as a gift by Mexican television producers a day earlier in Mexico City. The film showed Wilfredo Gomez winning against Carlos Zarate when both were undefeated. And it also showed Gomez again against Mexico’s Salvador Sanchez when he received his first loss against the former featherweight great.
The audience was on edge and clapped when Sanchez was shown. It also admired the fury and power that Gomez displayed at a time when he was considered the best fighter pound for pound at the time.
Currently, Cotto (32-0, 26 KOs) is on the verge of becoming the best fighter pound for pound. Margarito is blocking his way.
Last year, Margarito (36-5, 26 KOs) was supposed to fight Cotto, but boxing fans clamored for him to fight Paul Williams instead because of an alleged beating he sustained during sparring years before. He also did not want to give up the WBO title he held at the time. It cost him at least $1 million to keep his title and then subsequently lose the title to Williams.
Margarito learned his lesson.
The IBF sanctioning organization is said to be ready to strip Margarito of his title if he fights Cotto. But, this time, the Mexican fighter known as the “Tijuana Tornado” learned his lesson and will fight Cotto. Damn the belt.
“I’ve wanted to fight Cotto for a long time,” said Margarito.
Meanwhile, Cotto sits cool as a cucumber knowing that if he beats the strong boy of the welterweight division, the door is open for mega fights.
“Margarito is a tough fighter,” says Cotto. “It should be a great fight.
The fight will be held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on July 26. Expect a sell out.
“This is the type of match up that boxing fans love,” said HBO’s Tony Walker. “It has the potential to be one of the best fights they’ll ever see.”

Boxing chatter:
The next Diego Corrales?
Covina, California’s John Molina (11-0), a sterling prospect, fights Jose Lugo (10-3) in a lightweight match at the Quiet Cannon on Friday May 23. The fight card is promoted by All Star Boxing and begins at 7 p.m.
If you want to see the next generation Diego Corrales, look at Molina who has the height, the speed and the power to generate knockouts quicker than Jack-be-quick.
Molina has one of the best trainers in Ben Lira, an expert who has helped guide a number of world champions such as Terry Norris and Lupe Aquino. It looks like he has another fighter headed in that direction.
During Molina’s last fight, Lira had his fighter concentrating on using the jab and nothing else.
“I know John can hit hard but I want him to face every situation. Because as he faces better competition, I don’t want him wondering what to do,” said Lira. “I want him to be able to get out of trouble with something other than his power. Cause at the top level, he’s going to need that experience.”
Also on the fight card will be Vardan Gasparyan versus Alex Bogarin in a welterweight bout. For tickets and information cal (323) 781-4871.
Pacman tickets available
Manny Pacquiao (46-3-2, 34 KOs) will attempt to capture a fourth world title in a fourth weight division when he meets WBC lightweight titleholder David Diaz (34-1-1, 17 KOs) of Chicago on June 28 at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino on Las Vegas. Tickets are still available (702) 632-7580.
De La Hoya-Mayweather almost done
Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer said that negotiations between Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather Jr. are nearly complete for their rematch on Sept. 20. The location of the mega fight is more than likely going to be Las Vegas, but that has not been finalized. “We’re putting together the final touches to make this fight,” said Schaefer. “Both fighters want it.”

If you're a TRUE FIGHT FAN, it's really hard to get up for Mayweather-De La Hoya II on HBO PPV. On the other hand, the TRUE FIGHT FANS can't wait for July 26th when Cotto-Margarito lock horns. The reason TRUE FIGHT FANS won't but Mayweather-De La Hoya II is clear: it will be a repeat of the 1st fight. Cotto-Margarito will be totally unpredictable...although I got Cotto UD12 over Margarito, Margarito has a puncher's chance. I refuse to buy another Mayweather fight until he mans up and fights the winner of Cotto-Margarito. Point...blank...PERIOD. I want fresh, quality fights...not re-runs, Pretty Boy!

If anybody gets knocked out it will be Cotto. Margarito has a rock jaw. Cotto has to hit and run. That's his only chance. Cotto doesn't hit harder than Cintron. Margarito ate him up.

Does he have rock ribs though? Can't wait, this one is as mouthwatering and unpredictable as they come. Margarito is looking BIG in this photo. Either way we all win. Radam, I can only assume you are tired from your poetic posting on other articles, you must be a man alone on this one, or you're just winding us all up and sitting back to watch the response.

Radam- the real Stinker and Snooooozzzzzzer was oscar and Floyd the 1st time. Like kool aid- You fool me once shame on you, you foll me twice shame on me. If history is any indicator, Floyd is going to dance and dominate a full year and a half older Oscar who was bruised up by a slower, smaller and weaker opponent in Forbes.
Boxer-unless you've been in there against both Cotto and Cintron you have no idea what you are talking about. Who has Cintron fought that is notable ? Other than Margarito, twice ?

Both fighters mesh well & the hype for this fight will build.
Margarito has an Iron chin, Ive seen him get hit with a brick house and he just keeps coming foward...
But Cotto hits hard understatment is the hardest hitter at 147.
The question is can Margarito take Cottos punches? Let me re word this question differently, will Cotto be swayed by the fact that his punches may not be as effective aganist Margarito?
Or does Miguel Cotto really hit that hard?
Upset Margarito wins by KO in the 9th

Margarito will be a live underdog. My guess is that he'll floor Cotto once or twice, but Cotto will control the fight overall and win a unanimous decision. Can't wait for this fight. Anything can happen. Nobody cares about Mayweather-De La Hoya because neither really cares about boxing at this point in their careers. They just want to cash in. Cotto and Margarito are gungho over this sport.

Andy from newcastle. What I mean is the bout is going be disappointing and a stinker because it is not going to be thrilling. It will not live up to expectations. There will be a quick kayo. I am not telling who the victim will be, yet. This bout may not even happen. I smell a rat, just as I said about Judah-Mosley. That bout did not happen, as I knew it wouldn't. This one may not, also. And if so, somebody is going to get the fudge knocked out. Holla!

FLOYD IS A GIRL:
|
OK... this is how it will go down and you all pay attention. This fight will finish with ONE PUNCH to the liver. The same puch Hopkins gave to DLH (remember?). So.. whoever places that punch first will be the winner. Why I said so? Because Cotto knows Margarito's chin and Margarito knows this is the only punch that can finish this fight fast without getting all beat up by Cotto. Neither of them want to become victim of the other so that ONE PUNCH is the one both will be targeting. So... REMEMBER ME when that punch happens and come back after the fight to praise me. Now, that been said, remember another thing. FLOYD will retire after De la Hoya. I agree with Arum when he says FLoyd can't cope with loosing and he knows Margarito or Cotto are real boxers who cause pain to their victims SO HE WILL RETIRE AFTER DLH (and read this well) CLAIMING HIS DOCTOR RECOMMENDED RETIREMENT BECAUSE OF HIS HANDS INJURIES. That will give him the excuse he needs not to fight Cotto or Margarito and remain undefeated until retirement. Mentally he knows he can't cope with it and he will lie tryng to look good BUT ALL BOXING FANS (even Floyd's fans) will forever remember Floyd as a chicken boxer. Remember my words.... this will happen just like that. At the end we will prove FLOYD IS A GIRL.

Cotto by UD. It will be a brawl until Cotto realize he cant hurt Margarito than he'll start running like he did against Mosley. Cotto will get stunned and probably kd in one of the middle rounds. Margarito might also get stunned to the body or head, but keep coming forward. Still Cotto UD

Such a great fight to look forward to, the most anticipated for me. I kinda want Margarito to win because it kinda feels like his big chance and never quite got the respect he deserves. It's hard to pick a winner, Cotto's got the speed and skill and might frustrate Margarito but I can't see him knocking Margarito out. If he does it will be sensational. I don't know if what Cotto's got is enough though. I see Margarito grinding down Cotto with a TKO win, around 8 or 9. That's what I'd put my money on. As Kool-aid said, forget Mayweather until he fights someone decent. No one wants to see that lame re-match, except for the idiot casuals who will buy into the hype.

My feeling is this, the only way Margarito will win is to knock Cotto out or give the performance of his life, otherwise Cotto takes the decision. No matter what the result, i know its going to be a great fight, i just hope they give us good undercards on the PPV telecast. Radam G, please dont jinx us on this one brother. Lets hope the fight happens. Im hoping for the Margarito KO over Cotto.

Radam G: I always enjoy your posts almost as much as you seem to enjoy writing them. Your discourse is like polyphonic prose with its free rhythmical alliteration and assonance injected with levity and humor. At the risk of sounding like a didactic curmudgeon, I would like to correct one thing though, funning is not a new word. Funning is the inflected form of the intransitive verb "fun." Hahaha ... just messin' with you man!
Now, on to the topic at hand: Cotto vs Margarito. I believe that this fight has the potential to define this decade much like the Hagler vs Hearns fight did for the 1980's .

Margarito will feel Cottos power and Boxing skills in June 26.. scareweather ran away from Margarito and a Cotto so now them two will show the world what a real fight means. Radam G is almost becoming as good as Max Kellerman with the rhymes... This bout wont be disapointing, Margarito has a stone chin and it will take a while for Cotto to break him down. Cotto might not have the better chin but hes clearly the better boxer and I dont think he will get KO'd. A vicious body shot is the only thing I think can end this bout that early... 3 rounds or more, already worth the ppv, Hagler Hearns last long, but it remains alive in memory.

Cotto will turn Margarito into a pinata! It may be competitive for some rounds, but once Cotto goes to work, I see a Margarito meltdown. Just watch and see! Cotto is just too talented and too smart to let a plodding pressure fighter beat him. Remember, Margarito will be getting countered big time. Margarito will get his licks in, but not enough to win. Cotto will show his talent and ability to easily outbox Margarito.

Don Puto...I will give you one opportunity to not pick DLH to beat Floyd. That's not going to happen. My boys think I'm playing but I'm so serious when I say I'm not buying this fight. Floyd & DLH should be ashamed of themselves for making this rematch. IT PROVES NOTHING FOR EITHER ONE OF THEM. It's a fight based on greed & not on the will of fight fans. But make no mistake about it...Floyd's the man until someone beats him and DLH won't do it. And Cotto would manhandle DLH...however, between Floyd & Cotto...it's a true toss-up.

Like Eridite said... "This fight has the potential to define this decade much like the Hagler vs Hearns fight did for the 1980's".. I trully can't imagine how proud Cotto or Margarito could feel reading this and the other comments from you guys??? So.. that is real boxing!!!!... Now, on the other hand, imagine how bad and ashame Floyd "No-weather" could feel reading this with his very eyes? Every boxing magazine in the world is questioning his guts to fight the best. To me he is not the best even though his a grat athlete, he just doesn't have the heart to be in the same ring against Margarito and Cotto. FLOYD IS A TRULLY A GIRL. I wish somebody near him could read this and tell him he is not fooling real boxing fans. The ones who pay $50.00+ for his pay per view. The same that made him rich. Now he is not willing to prove he deserved our money. CHICKEN BOXER.

So Floyd still has REAL BOXING FANS? I guess he won't have any after he retires in september after DLH fight (my theory is that he will retire from "hand injuries" to avoid Margarito or Cotto). So... Why do you think he, being such a big mouth, prefer to avoid these comments from boxing fans all around the world who question THE SAME THING OVER AND OVER? He will go down in story as a scary chicken. And who can deny this? It is happening already... if you are a "no-weather" fan please be true to yourself and answer from the heart who do you prefer to see fighting? Mayweather vs De La Hoya or Cotto-Margarito? You get the point? You can be a Mayweather fan but one has to admit he is not that entertaining to watch... not anymore. So let's forget about him and in the future everytime his name comes up.. let's just say he was a good boxer who chicken out before facing the best fighters. Ahh.. and of course, he made lots of money from people us who thought he was worth of it.. he is not.

Floyd's the best in the World. That's ALL that matters to me. As a true Boxing I enjoy every boxing match: From slugfests , to pure boxing clinics, in which Floyd is the best to do so today. It's just ignorant the one who compares fights and put the childish "ZZZZZzzzz" in their comments. I'm a true boxing fan and Mayweather jr is the best. I and every boxing fan will remeber him as the best of this era. His history and place in boxing are already written and well placed. 'Pretty Boy' Floyd A.K.A. If you wanna talk about who's SCARED, then you'll have a LOT more to talk about Cotto, than Floyd. Miguel Cotto is TERRIFIED of Margarito. He and his camp. It's OBVIOUS they're scared. When a serious fighter like Cotto, who's ALWAYS serious with everybody throughout, smiles in front of the cameras with his opponent next to him, like he did after the Gomez fight it's because he's scared. He smiled against Mosley, cuz he was scared of Mosley. In the beginning of every round against Mosley, he was doing the cross sign. And his trainer saying about Margarito: "It's a dangerous fight". I mean his camp has NEVER said that about a past opponent. And Cotto delaying his sign on the contract, asking for his biggest purse of his career says it all. Miguel Cotto is SCARED of Antonio Margarito. Your boy has a lot signs of beign SCARED, than Floyd. So...SHUT UP!!!!

Well, I truly think we should not answer this two punks defending Floyd. Trying to compare Cotto's "I'm scare smile" to Floyd's "I'm so scare to talk about it" is nonsense. You know what hurt the most? That you always hear Cotto and Margarito say the same thing "I will fight whoever they put on front of him"... something that will never come out from Floyd's mouth. No need to argue over it anymore. ACTIONS DEFINES HISTORY... not a chicken boxer ducking out from dangerous fighters. Please don't look that bad making comments... most of Floyd fans here stay quiet because they know deep inside his "best p4p" title was true until now that they can see with their own eyes how Floyd is managing this chicken-out thing. Remember me when he retires after DLH from supposedly "hand injuries"... IT WILL HAPPEN to avoid Cotto or Margarito. I can even see (a paid) doctor on ESPN talking on "how bad" the injuries are and why it is a shame "such a great boxer" had to cut short his career and blah, blah, blah.... everything well orchestrated to make him look good.... BUYING HIS WAY to the media acceptance.... dude.. It is truly an horror movie... BUT WE ALL KNOW HE IS A CHICKEN BOXER.... I hope he doesn't ever come to Puerto Rico... people will make chicken noises at him right off the plane... it really doesn't matter if he wears a Gucci Dress or goes around throwing money... people will pick up the money and still they will "cococuaaaaaá" him. Over here people EARN RESPECT.... like Margarito... he deserves our respect because he is truly a warrior.. like Cotto... he will fight anyone who calls himself the best.... those are boxers, PERIOD. Did any Floyd fan missed my comment on who is more entertaining to watch? DLH vs Floyd or Cotto vs Margarito?... I guess that tops any stupid comment. Floyd the best...? jajajajaja yeah right!!!

Suits, Stop Squabbling, And Posturing, AND MAKE FIGHTS!
"Floyd may very well be the most talented boxer but that he does not understand that what the fans, who ultimately pay the bills, watch fights for is entertainment. At the moment, he not only ignores that reality but frankly doesn't seem to care. Neither about our wishes and/or our passion for to see great fights. Thus, there is little Go ... and even less Show. I am vaguely interested in the Business of Boxing. Frankly, it is a mess on a good day and worse on it's worst. I prefer reading the Business pages where brilliant men and women develop skills and strategies to create incredible value and wealth (for themselves and others) in ways far more effectively and meaningfully than those who Rule ...some might say Ruin...this beautiful Sport." --FE'ROZ, speaking for a majority of fight fans
