TSS Closer Look: Promoter Bobby D
By Ralph Gonzalez
If you’ve ever been to a Bobby DePhillippis show you quickly notice that the atmosphere is quite different from most other club shows. There’s a lot of handshaking and backslapping going on.
“There’s a real camaraderie at our shows. Most of my customers don’t even ask who’s fighting,” said DePhillippis. “They come because they know it’s going to be a good show and a good time. Everybody leaves with a smile on their face.”
On Thursday evening at Swiss Park in Chula Vista, “Bobby D Presents” brings boxing back to San Diego with former amateur standout, Aaron Garcia (7-1, 2KO’s), headlining “Battle De Mayo”, a card full of up and comers like promising super featherweight Emilio Bojorquez (9-1, 7 KO’s) out of Tijuana.
DePhillippis has been putting on shows in San Diego since the early-eighties, also managing fighters like James “The Heat” Kinchen, world champion Jesus Salud, Orlin Norris and Tony “Bazooka” De Luca.
DePhillippis a.k.a. “Bobby D” started by putting on cards in a roller skating rink and eventually moved on to a successful four year run at the El Cortez convention center until the building was sold. “We had a lot of wonderful fighters on our shows,” recalled DePhillippis. “Guys like James Kinchen, Jesus Salud, Terry Norris, Paul Vaden and Tony “Bazooka” De Luca all fought on our cards.”
His relatively new company, Bobby D. Presents, has been staging shows at different locations for years but have yet to find a permanent home for year-round boxing. “Finding a good venue in San Diego has been a struggle,” said DePhillippis. “They’re either too small or too expensive. Our audiences have been growing so we need a venue that can accommodate our regulars as well as our new attendees.”
DePhillippis’ partner, Gabriel Barron, has made strides in marketing to new customers using both traditional and newer methods. “We do everything from visiting businesses and putting up posters to handing out flyers,” said Barron. “We also use email blasts and the internet to market our shows. We’ve been getting a very positive response.”
Growing up around boxing with his father Roberto made DePhillippis think about pursuing the sport momentarily until reality set in. “My father managed Ken Norton, Bobby Valdez and many other fighters,” he stated. “I used to work out with some of the guys and I wanted to box. But at that time, we didn’t have much money and I was working twelve hours a day, six days a week, so there wasn’t time for boxing.”
Instead, DePhillippis chose to get involved behind the scenes as part of the industry he’s grown to appreciate. “I’ve made a lot of good friends through boxing. Friends like Dean Lohuis who I’ve known for more than twenty years. I’ve traveled to Europe four or five times and all over the U.S. It’s been a lot of fun,” he recounted. “For me it’s been about the fun. I know there are managers who take money from their fighters off the top. I never did that. I’ve never been in it to make a dollar. I do it because I really enjoy the sport.”
Although he keeps busy with several restaurants he owns and his role as the director of a bank, he’s recently branched out into music as the lead singer of “The Sound Doctors”. “We sing some Latin music, some oldies and some soul,” said DePhillippis, who’ll be performing with the band during intermission at the “Battle De Mayo”. “We play a few times a month in different places around San Diego. We could play more if we wanted to but it’s basically an outlet to have a good time.”
For those who’ve never been to a Bobby D show, DePhillippis promises a memorable night. “Expect a lot of action and expect to have a fun night. We put on an exciting show with evenly matched fights,” he stated. “We have quality fighters on the card from all over southern California and Mexico. Our goal is to make sure people enjoy themselves and spread the word. Once they come, our hope is that they become regulars at our future shows. This is all for the fans. It’s their night.”
“Battle De Mayo” takes place at the Swiss Park in Chula Vista, California. Tickets start at only $10.00. For ticket info call 619-420-8866. Doors open at 6pm. First fight is at 7 p.m. There will be six bouts with Aaron Garcia (7-1, 2KO’s), taking on Gilberto Luque (7-5, 3 KO’s) as the main event.
NOTE: DePhillippis has notified The Sweet Science that Thursday's show has been moved up one week to May 29th. Times remain the same.

Sad but true wisdom from Radam. Wish it were not so. This is why people hope for an after life, where justice is always served. This is why TSS likes to spotlight the good guys; rewards don't have to be only monetary.

Nice article on a really nice and charismatic guy - Bobby D. has been a diamond in the the haystack as far as producing quality and high-action entertainment at "beer" drinkers prices! If you haven't been, go...if you don't go, don't bother and continue to wish you did!!! I look forward to seeing the fights, the beautiful people, and first and foremost...Bobby D. and the Sound Doctors do the "cha, cha, cha"!!! Viva Swiss Park - "Battle de Mayo"!

Bobby D. is the greatest boxing fan in the world and he shows it by supporting boxing as a promoter, manager and friends to those in the boxing business. Ask the Casinos like Golden Acorn where he's promoted fights for Guilty Boxing on ESPN Deportes, America One, Fox Espanol, Bend TV, Fight Network, Comcast etc.
Bobby's boxing followers have deep pockets and made the night a total succes for the Casinos. Bobby is right there to make sure everybody is happy. From the commission to boxers, to every ticket buyer, Bobby D is there to make sure everybody enjoys his great passion which is boxing. Lace em up, launch the leather, Bobby D is a happy man seeing that and seeing those seeing seeing it with him. I go way back with Bobby, even remember seeing 16 year old Manuel "Mantecas"Medina fight on his card and go on to become a five time featherweight Champion of the world. All five losses were to his wife Ladytecas.
How about names like Tony "Bazooka" De Luca, or Lupe Aquino, Rigo Lopez , Todd McPhee, Gilbert Baptiste, Orlin and Terry Norris. Bobby D gave them all a stage to perfect their craft. Bobby D. The "D" stands for Diamond as he is a gem.

Bobby D and his Father Roberto are two of the nicest people we have ever met. The only thing we miss now after moving to Texas is having lunch at the Butcher Shop. Give our best to them.

I worked for Bobby D for 13 years until I moved to Oregon in 2006. I was CFO of Bobby D Presents and can tell you first hand he isn't in it for the money. Now thats not to say he wouldn't like that to change, but I saw a man who put his fighters career first, his fans second, and himself 3rd.
Any TV station that has had trouble with greedy promoters would be well advised to switch to Bobby D. He has more integrity than ANY promoter I have worked with. I was so influenced by him, I have been trying to bring his shows to Oregon. Oregon would embrace him!

On May 29th, 2008, I attended my first pro fight since the coliseum at 15th and E St in S.D. closed its doors to the public many years ago. I remember watching some of my favorites boxers at that time, fighters like Renato Garcia, Charlie "Bad News" Austin, David Love, and Ray "Windmill" White, the "fighting carpenter." Those days were awesome and I am so glad that I attended the fights at Swiss Park on 29 May 08. I can't wait until the next Bobby D production because I'll be there with several family members to enjoy another great night of boxing.
P.S. I really apprecate Benny Ricardo and how he interacted with the fans in exemplary fashion. He's a great commentor and did a great job at the park last Thursday. Thanx Benny for taking a photo with me!

Mr. Garcia, "15th & E"?! You must be a distinguished grey haired fight fan like me! My dad used to be ring manager down there with Mikey Davies and others for over 20 years. Went to my first fight there when I was 8 years old or so...those old cables holding up the roof made a hell of a lot of noise when the fans would shake them for noise effect.
I am very pleased now to take my own teenager to Bobby D's events so a new generation of fight fans can develop toward the future. "Battle de Mayo" was a good old fashioned night at the fights, I'd go again in a heartbeat.
Ken Norton when he was still in the Marine Corps.?-Little Indian Red Lopez?-Spud Murphy?
Those were the days of the fights in San Diego that Bobby "D" has brought back to home.

Actions Speak So Loudly, Can't Hear What You're Saying
"Here's the problem with Winky, the man has OUTPRICED himself so many times that no one wants to even deal with him any more. Wright believes he's entitled to a fight with Pavlik or Oscar, but come on, a draw with Taylor, and he then refuses to do the rematch, followed by a easy win over Quartey, and then the UGLY fight with B-Hop. No one wants to see him after that. Winky needs to go back to the basics and work his way back to a big fight; sitting on the sidelines crying out for a $ fight ain't the way to do it. Get back in the ring. Actions speak louder than words."
