Manny Pacquiao In L.A.! Diaz Too

By David A. Avila

LOS ANGELES-Inside the Bonaventure Hotel where dozens of Hollywood movies have been filmed since the building first went up, another star, Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao, arrives with an entourage on a sunny Tuesday morning.

From room to room he’s led by media television personnel intent on interviewing the Philippine Island’s greatest hero.

Pacquiao calmly undertakes what is now a ritual.

“No, I don’t mind,” said Pacquiao (46-3-2, 35 KOs).

Pacquiao, who captured the WBC junior lightweight title last March, now marches on to attempt yet another division as he challenges Chicago’s David Diaz (34-1-1, 17 KOs) for the WBC lightweight title. The fight takes place on June 28 at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. It will be shown on HBO pay-per-view.

There’s no rest for the weary.

Last year he was involved in politics in his home country; this year he’s involved in acquiring what no other Asian fighter dared attempt: a fourth world title.

“Pacquiao is one the brink to become the first Asian fighter to win four world titles in four divisions,” said Top Rank’s Bob Arum.

That means a lot to Pacquiao, you can see it in his eyes.

Despite the constant travel, the multiple press conferences planned for San Francisco, Chicago and San Diego, Pacman walks through the process the way an attorney winds his or her way through the legal entanglements on a daily basis. It’s step by step, with the same casual smile and gracious spirit.

The world of boxing now has another super star who’s become an icon not just in the Philippines, but here in the U.S., in Mexico, Europe and even South America. For boxing fans the name Pacquiao means excitement.

Arum spoke of the 400,000 pay-per-view buys garnered when Pacquiao fought Mexico’s Juan Manuel Marquez. That’s why he’s matched the boxing star with yet another Mexican fighter, albeit a Mexican-American fighter this time.

Diaz is thankful to be considered. Very thankful.

“A lot of people don’t know I stopped boxing for about two years,” said Diaz, who captured the WBC title in 2006. “It’s been rough getting back into it but Bob Arum took me back in.”

Diaz never has an easy fight and expects an even rougher encounter against the fighter many consider the best fighter pound for pound.

“Manny Pacquiao is one of the best in the world,” says Diaz. “I know a lot of writers don’t believe in me.”

The big question is the short jump on weight from 130 pounds to 135 pounds.

It may not seem like much, but it’s a quantum leap in professional boxing. Especially when Pacquiao first began as a 112-pound flyweight. Can he take the punch of a true lightweight? And can he bring the same effect on his punches as he did before?

Diaz feels Pacquiao is walking into his house of terror.

“You guys are going to have fun. I hope this fight is one people talk about for a long time,” said Diaz, expecting yet another toe-to-toe war, given both fighters like to move forward, never backward. “I’m not letting go of this belt.”

Pacquiao merely smiles. He’s heard all the predictions and faced so many previous encounters against the top fighters Mexico has to offer. Now it’s a Mexican-American fighter in front of him.

“It’s going to be a good fight,” says Pacquiao. “The style of David Diaz is very accurate to my style. I’ll try my best to win this fight too.”

Though the Filipino slugger had just stepped off the jet after a long flight over the Pacific Ocean, he seemed as fresh as a ripe orange plucked from a tree.

“It’s going to be more action than the Barrera fight and the Marquez fight because he’s a good fighter and wants to fight toe-to-toe,” Pacquiao said. “I promise to all my fans I will do my best for the honor of my country.”

Freddie Roach, who trains Pacquiao, expects an even tougher fight than the previous two fights because Diaz is a former Olympian (who beat Zab Judah to make the US team) and captured the world title as a professional.

“This is not an easy fight,” said Roach, who begins training Pacquiao this week. “People don’t go to the Olympics and win a world championship by accident.”

Pacquiao remains calm as usual. Accepting challenges great and small are like breathing in and out for the great Filipino fighter. Even if he has to fight three or four times a year.

“Might as well fight now while I’m young,” said Pacquiao smiling.

After the conference ended the dozens of reporters walked down to the parking level. In the last corridor dozens of posters of Hollywood films like Strange Days, True Lies and In the Line of Fire are on the walls. Each film had used the hotel in one or more of their scenes.

Perhaps one day, Pacquiao, who makes films in his native country, might have his face emblazoned on one of those posters.?

Heck, Arnold made it, and he was only a weightlifter.

andy from newcastle:  Well done to TSS on the recent Sugar Ray vs Oscar piece. It brought about the most informed, mature, and well written comments from readers we've seen in weeks. There was no room for bickering, schoolboy name calling (we're all guilty), or bad taste comments. Everybody knew their stuff or did their research to back up their arguments (Erudite was particularly impressive I thought). Kudos to all who commented, I think we all deserve a big pat on the back for taking 'our' web site back to the high level it should be at. and now we've returned the bench mark back to above waist level, let's see if we can keep it there for a while.

Radam G:  That was "Classy," Editor Mike. But now it is time to get MESSY! All my Pinoys and Pinay know what it is. PacMan at Pinoy TIME! Manny is going to have to beat up the last of Diazes. These dudes have had a bad 08. And this David Diaz is going to get worst. He is not the David who killed a giant with a slingshot. He is a Windy City David who is going to be in a whirlwind typhoon from a far-away island in the Pacific Rim. This typhoon will be in the fist of Pera Pac aka PacMan. Diaz is going to get busted up, beat down and knocked out in nine. It's Pinoy Time! Holla!

donputo69:  cant wait for pac man to takeout another mexican fighter out..lmfao...
Wednesday May 14, 2008 09:29:57 PM
Rashad:  Manny Is going to get taken out. No doubt in my mind. They both like to go toe to toe and Diaz Olympic background will show greatly when he takes the southpaw out with big right hands! Diaz in 10!!! It's time all this moving up will finally get to Pacman. He won't be taking true lightweight punches for long!!!
Wednesday May 14, 2008 11:22:27 PM
rudy:  This has to be up there with Oscar-Floyd II as the least exciting PPV of the year.....
Thursday May 15, 2008 08:42:40 AM
Rashad:  rudy was that sarcastic or are you actually on drugs? THIS FIGHT IS GOING TO BE SICK!!!
Thursday May 15, 2008 11:17:15 AM
rudy:  A sick fight?? HAHAHAHAHAHA now that's funny....I know its Manny and he definitely provides some action but You'll be on drugs for buying this fight. Have u seen the line up? This is just a horrible PPV as PacMan vs Jorge Solis! Arum knows Manny will run right thru Diaz, so he puts him on PPV to make more $$$. Diaz has no chance. Like my man Radam put it, Windy City David is about to be blown away, like some bad gas
Thursday May 15, 2008 01:03:30 PM
Yuvie:  The Solis/Pacquiao card was worth it just to see Mijares' performance against Arce. I always look forward to any Pacquiao fight, with my mrs being filipina I've pretty much got no choice. Every Pacquiao fights a major fight in this household.
Thursday May 15, 2008 01:49:58 PM
rudy:  The Solis-PacMan was not PPV main event worthy
Thursday May 15, 2008 03:17:32 PM
BigDaddy74:  I wouldn't touch this Pay Per Poo with a 10 ft. pole.I thought that Diaz should've lost the decision to a washed up Erik Morales in their fight.Against a prime Pac-Man?...Fuh-get bout it!
Thursday May 15, 2008 04:42:01 PM
Bulldog:  Pacquiao will knock Diaz out within 10 rounds, Diaz is good but he isnt a great champion i just cant see him having the bottle or stamina to mix it with Manny over the distance. I expect Diaz will also be the weaker of the two despite been the more natural fighter at the weight. Out of curiosity...do you have to pay to see most fights in the US? Is there much coverage thats free, such as domestic fights for domestic titles?
Thursday May 15, 2008 04:54:45 PM
Arturo:  This fight is a waste. Diaz fought on the Marquez/Pacquiao undercard last year , and it bored the hell out me. The good thing about this is that Manny is going to beat Diaz but he is also going to have to fight Marquez one more time. For the lightweight title cause JMM is moving up in weight also.
Thursday May 15, 2008 05:49:05 PM
Boxer:  Bulldog, the only boxing that is not pay-per-view is on cable tv. Tomorrow there's going to be fights on ESPN and telefutura the Spanish network Those are not pay per view.
Thursday May 15, 2008 05:56:51 PM
Mejico:  For people saying this is a sorry ppv its because they are not PACMAN fans...they are the type who only wanna see a fight with a guy they WANT to be pacquiao. I am mexican and I love watching ever pacman fight I dont give a damn who he fights its the same with Tyson I watched all his fights because I know its unpredictable. and this fight will be worth it! its gonna be action packed for real and Diaz is no slouch this fight for me is unpredictable because diaz is huge compared to pacman. and stop bringing up that morales fight! yes Erik won in my opinion but Pacman doesnt have the boxing skills of morales! Morales outboxed diaz he didnt out brawl him.
Thursday May 15, 2008 07:29:36 PM
Larry:  Why not? All of Pac's fights were PPV quality. yea, even the Solis fight!
Thursday May 15, 2008 07:57:02 PM
Anonymous user:  pacman never beat d. diaz priod

rmvj:  a very interesting fight... am sure pacman will win.
Friday May 16, 2008 02:34:05 AM
Bulldog:  Boxer, thanks, seems its expensive over there to watch the sport, we get Friday Night Fight Night free on sky each week, covers some good domestic fights and some of your PPV fights are featured on there free too.
Friday May 16, 2008 05:41:17 AM
mikesman:  we can expect best boxing power and styles between the Pac and Buenas DIAZ. This time no more Dancing and Running. Someone will kiss before going to Sleep at the Canvas. Thats for sure.
Friday May 16, 2008 06:17:34 AM
wayne:  Diaz style is made to order for Pacquiao. Diaz is durable but sooner or later Pacquiaos power will be the difference.
Friday May 16, 2008 10:18:04 AM
rudy:  Bulldog, if you think about it -- boxing fans out HAVE to pay something to watch any fight on TV. To watch any fight you need to pay for cable then if you want the good fights need to pay for premium channels for HBO+Sho, WNF & FNF need ESPN, need cable for Versus, Fox Sports, and dont get started on PPVs....$45 to $55 almost every month...
Friday May 16, 2008 10:20:36 AM
Sodamn Insane:  This will be a fast pace exciting PPV fight and we will all be watching first off their are no other great fights coming up this July and in all honesty I rather pay for this fight then the over hype ODLH vs Mayweather this Sept The best PPV fight is Cotto vs Margarito which I'm waiting for but Pacman has always put on a great fight on PPV . So don't miss this one I hear Marquez vs Vasquez 4 is in the making
Friday May 16, 2008 11:18:53 AM
Steinberg:  This might seem an unpredictable fight on whose going to succeed. both pugilist are better fighters in the ring, thier style of boxing - many fans would love to see; NOT backing off. it'll be a great one to watch coming June 28 @ Vegas of course. See you fight fans...
Friday May 16, 2008 01:03:25 PM
lheo:  god will for idol manny and more power to beat dias,
Friday May 16, 2008 01:22:45 PM
Bulldog:  Reckon you gotta raw deal wi that in the states, once ive paid for sky then i pretty much get most fights on there, odd occassion u have to pay setanta £10 for the month and get the fights which im guessing are your ppv, even then ya can get offers for £15 for 3 month, Cottos last few fights were all free on sky, Gomez, Mosley, Hatton i think is gonna be a PPV but otherwise it int that bad.
Friday May 16, 2008 06:08:17 PM
rudy:  Crazy how the networks work Bulldog, Hatton-Lazcano is on our regular cable - no PPV, but we had to pay for Cotto-Mosley & Cotto-Judah as well as Jones-Trinidad....this year has been a lot better as far as PPV's go. We've been treated to great fights on HBO and Showtime
Friday May 16, 2008 08:29:40 PM
edgar:  Every single time I see a Pacman fight it gets harder and harder for him to win it. This time the ring wars might be catching up to Manny. Versus Marquez, I dont think Pacman won that fight and Ive never seen Pacman stunned like that. That he was stunned often and as earliy on in the fight was something new to me . I dont think a jump in weight is a good idea either, especially not as soon as this fight is going to be. There is a difference between David Diaz and his Mexican counter parts, and it has everything to do with his amature backround. The US amature program is one of the best in the world, if not they best. Alot of the greats come from this program Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, De La Hoya just to name a few. For some reason hungry fighters or fighters with humble begining have trouble with the pedigree of amature fighters or so Ive noticed. Maybe its the training or the level of competition who knows, all I know is David Diaz is at the peak of his comeback and he also happends to be from my home town of CHICAGO BABY! Hes a hell of a Banger and all the luck to him. (Edgar doesnt really think Diaz needs luck)

2009 Reader Of The Year Weighs In On Legacies Of Pacquiao And Mayweather
"Pacquiao has proven....in the ring... time and time again that he is the greatest of this time. He has earned his respect. He begs for nothing. He is a man content with his growth, his family and his achievements. A man the world has now turned it's eyes to behold. Floyd Mayweather is not even close in stature. He may possess the greatest skills but he is not the Face of Boxing today. Google Manny Pacquiao. There are 20 million searches. Google Floyd. There are 6.5 million. Look at the NYTimes, the Wall Street Journal and Time. Count how many words were used these past years to mention Floyd Mayweather. Then count the words still being printed about Manny. And keep counting. As I've said many times, Floyd has been too clever by half. He has short changed his public.....and has out-smarted himself. Manny will fight but a few more times. Enjoy it while you can. He is an all time great pugilist. Floyd, with all of his remarkable skills lack the will to be truly great in the biggest sense of the word. His legacy will look more like Holmes that Ali. He has earned it." ---November is half-way gone, but we don't need to keep counting ballots. It's a landslide. Fe'Roz has won the 2009 Reader of the Year award. His comments add to the website immeasurably, and he epitomizes the thoughtful, respectful, educated fan of pugilism we strive to cater to at TSS. Congrats, Fe'Roz, and please accept my thanks for being the valued member of this community that you are. Sincerely, Editor Mike
