Tim Bradley Takes WBC Title From Witter

By David A. Avila

Tim “Desert Storm” Bradley captured the WBC junior welterweight title from Great Britain’s much-feared Junior Witter by split decision on Saturday.

“I told everybody I worked hard to win this fight,” Bradley (22-0, 11 KOs) told theSweetScience.com by telephone immediately after the fight.

Palm Springs fighter Bradley’s peculiar combination of speed, patience and an overhand right convinced two of three judges including the crowd that he was deserving of the junior welterweight title over Witter (36-2-2, 21 KOs) at FM Trent Arena in Nottingham, England.

After five rounds of punch and hold tactics that seldom saw more than one punch land by either fighter, Bradley distanced himself from Witter by landing an overhand right on the jaw that floored him with 20 seconds left in the sixth round.

“He was pulling back when I caught him with an overhand right,” Bradley, 24, said. “We had been working on that a lot during training. We noticed he pulled back like that.”

From the sixth round on Bradley stepped up the pressure and found openings for his right hands and later the left hook. Witter seemed satisfied with firing a single punch and holding until the 10th round. By then, it was too late.

Bradley felt his trainer and father’s game plan was perfect.

“They wanted me to work the body until the sixth round,” said Bradley. “I stuck to the plan and kept going to the body early.”

It was evident early that Bradley’s speed was not something Witter was accustomed to facing since 2000 when he faced and lost to then undefeated Zab Judah. Once again speed proved to be the difference.

“My jab to the belly was the key,” said Bradley. “We wanted to take a little of his energy away early in the fight.”

The Palm Springs fighter was a decided 5-1 underdog because of several reasons including never having faced a top 10 contender, never fighting outside of California and never fighting for a world title.

It didn’t matter.

“It was beautiful,” said Alex Camponovo, who most of Bradley’s matches in California. “Tim fought a great fight.”

Earlier this month, Bradley was supposed to fight former lightweight world champion Jose Luis Castillo, but the Mexican fighter failed to make weight and the elimination bout was canceled. The WBC named Bradley the number one contender. And when Witter could not convince WBA titleholder Ricky Hatton to fight, Bradley sent over a challenge from California.

Witter took the bait.

“I studied the videos and saw that he gets tired late in the fight,” said Bradley. “That’s why we decided to increased the pressure.”

During the last three rounds Bradley seemed to have Witter’s rhythm down and crashed lefts and rights on the awkward fighter. Witter never seemed to be able to slow down the California fighter’s pace. The judges scored it 115-112 Witter and 115-113, 114-113 for Bradley.

“We had a perfect plan,” Bradley said.

Ken Thompson, president of Thompson Boxing Promotions that have provided Bradley’s fights from the beginning, said it was something he’ll always remember.

“Boxing got a reward today,” said Thompson. “There’s no nicer person that deserves to win the title than Tim Bradley.”

Radam G:  Like I said, this dude is all self-hype and absolutely no fight. I know that his name is Witter. And his alias is hitter. But he should change it to bull..-- you fill in the rest. Against Timothy "Desert Storm" Bradley, he had no game. But he thinks of himself as having so much skills and fame. He cannot walk the walk. And since this beatdown -- for the time being -- he won't be able to convince anyone about his, "Hatton's-scare-of-me" talk. What a joke! Yup! Witter makes me choke! Holla!

andy from newcastle:  Only taken me two hours to stop laughing. Radam, I guess you'll agree I won the Brit wars and my Quote of Note was spot on. Yuvie and the rest of you mugs, stick to watching your Best of Hamed videos, cos this is one Brit quite pleased to be "an idiot" tonight, as me and my two mates were all on our feet cheering on Bradley for his gutsy performance against a shot and classless Witless Witter. The real disgrace wasn't Witter's performance but the incompetant judging. Steve F had it spot on, Witter won four of the first five, and lost every round after that including the 10 -8 round 6. I do admit I was wrong about Witter having nothing to bring to the table for Hatton though. If he got a job in a Manchester pub he could bring him a guiness and pie and chips. Glad this fiasco has come to an end, now let's focus on Mijares Munoz, a real fight between real champions.

andy from newcastle:  One final comment before ah hit ma pit. It was probably a big mistake of Junior's to have the Mitchells in his corner. (Brits will understand). When they had their heads together between rounds they made the perfect advert for corner pad sponsors, Hooters.

Fizz7777:  Yep, I'm a Brit and I have to admit that Witter was always a fraud. His 'throw a haymaker and smother' style was always in danger of being exposed by a busier fighter.

Nuckle:  This was the 1st time I saw Witter fight. In the beginning I was not impressed. Watching him fight gets very annoying, now I see why the Brits are not behind him and why Hatton refused to fight him. How can you be a fan of someone with an ackward style like that. It just look like he dont have a gameplan or clue to what he's doing in the ring. I jumped out of my seat when Bradley landed that overhand right in the 6th. Out of annoyance watching Witter. I'm glad I dont have to look forward to him fighting in the future.

Yuvie:  Hah, andy's feeling smug. I'm glad I could be of service to you. Just don't forget how stupid your boy looked getting knocked out by Mayweather. Oh, no, the only reason he lost was because of Cortez....yeah, that's right. Blame it on the ref.

andy from newcastle:  Hey Radam, have you noticed Ray, ScottyD, Yuvie and Sean Live, all seem to have upset tummies today? Conspicuous by their absence. Teddy Atlas for President buttons are available from me, free of charge.

andy from newcastle:  Sorry Yuvie, I promise to try and be more mature (but you did call me an idiot). For the record, I like Hatton as a personality, and I'll always support him in the ring, but I am more of a mexican fan if pushed, with exceptions (I'll be going Cotto over Margarito, but won't be upset either way if it is a good fight). I look forward to reading EVERYONE's opinions on the out come of Mijares Munoz, it's a win win for all of us, assuming we can get the broadcast.

Saul:  Witter looked terrible in this fight, he tried so hard to look flashy he forgot he had to win the fight. Congrats to Bradley on his victory and champ status.

Yuvie:  There's some great matches coming up for sure. Really looking forward to Mijares/Munoz but it's getting it in the UK. It's the sort of match that might end up on eurosport in a couple of weeks time. I see a Mijares win but then I've only ever seen two of Munoz's fights and some of his other highlights. Then we got Pacquiao/Diaz & Margarito/Cotto. If Cotto beats Margarito he deserves major props.

andy from newcastle:  On behalf of Yuvie, myself (not resident in the UK no more, but still could have problems with getting the fight in the Caribbean), and any other tragically deprived fight fans, I am appealing to any techno minded and charitable US Sweet Science brethren (remember this used to be the Brotherhood of Prize Fighters web site or something like that), who have the wherewithall, to try and put the fight (Mijares Munoz) on You Tube for us. Sadly, if we can't get it I'm going to have to go and watch Proving Ground 4, a live MMA event, featuring barmen, bankers, teachers, and an ex-student of mine, down our local sports center. Is that what you want? Cos that's what'll happen.

2009 Reader Of The Year Weighs In On Legacies Of Pacquiao And Mayweather
"Pacquiao has proven....in the ring... time and time again that he is the greatest of this time. He has earned his respect. He begs for nothing. He is a man content with his growth, his family and his achievements. A man the world has now turned it's eyes to behold. Floyd Mayweather is not even close in stature. He may possess the greatest skills but he is not the Face of Boxing today. Google Manny Pacquiao. There are 20 million searches. Google Floyd. There are 6.5 million. Look at the NYTimes, the Wall Street Journal and Time. Count how many words were used these past years to mention Floyd Mayweather. Then count the words still being printed about Manny. And keep counting. As I've said many times, Floyd has been too clever by half. He has short changed his public.....and has out-smarted himself. Manny will fight but a few more times. Enjoy it while you can. He is an all time great pugilist. Floyd, with all of his remarkable skills lack the will to be truly great in the biggest sense of the word. His legacy will look more like Holmes that Ali. He has earned it." ---November is half-way gone, but we don't need to keep counting ballots. It's a landslide. Fe'Roz has won the 2009 Reader of the Year award. His comments add to the website immeasurably, and he epitomizes the thoughtful, respectful, educated fan of pugilism we strive to cater to at TSS. Congrats, Fe'Roz, and please accept my thanks for being the valued member of this community that you are. Sincerely, Editor Mike
