Oscar In A Cakewalk Over Forbes
By Michael Woods
Let's look on the bright side. At least they didn't put it on PPV.
Oscar De La Hoya looked sharp, in shape and rust-free in a glorified sparring session against Contender alum Steve Forbes at the Home Depot Center soccer field in California on Saturday night.
The judges saw Oscar a runaway winner, by scores of 119-109, 119-109, 120-108.
Forbes fought in spurts and landed some clean shots against Oscar, and viewers may well have been put off by his habit after several rounds of nodding at and tapping Oscar, as if to say, Hey, good work. Oscar's face did indicate afterwards that he'd been in a tussle, it must be noted, however, so it can't be said that Forbes came in and merely went through the motions for the best purse of his career.
HBO's Manny Steward thought Oscar looked solid, and believes that many fight fans will now give ODLH a better shot at bettering Floyd Mayweather in their September rematch. Larry Merchant, meanwhile, didn't act as enthused, and told viewers that promotional wizardry will be what sells that re-do.
I admit that I hoped for more from Forbes, who did not fight with the balls-out effort that he told TSS he would. He didn't look as outclassed as the last Contender alum we saw in over his head, Alfonso Gomez, but he did not drape himself in glory with this outing. As usual, our astute readers, on the Prediction Page, mostly pegged the match, and foretold what would go down.

My faith in Roger Mayweather failed me! I thought it'd be close but only one round? Darn. But Oscar is a long ways away if he wants to even have a chance against Floyd. Oscar was already breathing through his mouth through the middle rounds. He better start training TOMORROW and come into the rematch the best he has EVER looked. Because against Floyd he'll be doing more chasing and will have to throw even more punches. Unlike other moron's though, I liked the first Floyd fight, it was exciting since the crowd was into it ever round which kept me into it. The only people who hated it were the slow people who actually expected Gatti-Ward 4 in that fight in a FLOYD MAYWEATHER fight. This fight will be just as exciting even a little more after that dominating performance and I can't wait for it! But I'll go Floyd Unanimous Decision this time around.

Here's my best case scenario based on Oscar saying there is NOT a deal in place for a fall fight w/Floyd. PBF realizes this fight isnt going to do sh*t for him other than a pay day and looks towards the winner of Cotto-Margarito........a fighter the caliber of Mayweather needs a test, a challenge, someone who will push his limits and make him fight to truly establish his legacy as a great fighter, the winner of Cotto-Margarito will do just that.

Perhaps we have seen the best De La Hoya has to offer in his win against Forbes. De La Hoya could not even knockout Forbes. What makes this fight think that Oscar can beat Mayweather Jr. As for the HBO team at least one person for sure is probably paid behind the scene to promote Oscar's rematch the big PPV ripoff against Mayweather Jr. Oscar used to be exciting and in the present date is living off his name. If that's the Best Boxing has to offer a rematch between Mayweather Jr. and Oscar why bother even buying it. The result will be the same being no knockout and little action. I won't buy it.

What exactly did you tell us Mr.Eastar? As far as I remember you spend most of your time singing the praises of PBF and slagging off everybody else as bums. Did you tell us that Oscar would win every round in a suprisingly competitive fight? Glorified sparring session Mr.Woods? I don't think you give enough credit to Steve Forbes. No real boxing fan (and haters of any fighter, be it Oscar, Cotto or Floyd, are included in this- if you are blind to the qualities and focus only on the faults, then you miss out on all the beauty), gave him much of a chance and expected this to be a cake walk as the writer said. Oscar won every round on my card, but this was no cake walk. Forbes took everything Oscar had to offer and still managed to hit back with plenty, though not much connected cleanly he still left his mark, check out Oscar's face. He will be a formidable opponent for any top fighter at the lightweight or junior welter limit. Good luck to him, he deserves to make some money off this brave and competitive performance. And September? Well I perhaps falsely feel more excited about September than I did a few hours ago (not difficult), so Oscar and his team achieved this objective with me. Hopefully they will both perform better than before and earn their dosh. Anybody else missing donputo69 by the way? Him, Radam G and Smiley C (Gawd bless him, care in the community is a wonderful thing), keep this site fun.

Cheers Rich. If I said it was a close fight I could accept you of suspecting I was on the wacky backy between rounds. but as I said I gve DLH every round, but Forbes stood his ground and took it and did fire back consistently throughout (Oscar didn't get those marks through Stevie missing ALL the time). Cotto Gomez was a cakewalk/miss match whatever. Jesse took a hammering off Cintron and then that russian geezer a couple of weeks back. I stand by what I said. This was a one sided but competitive fight (all right I admit that sounds naff). I didn't find it boring as one of my pub mates did, and was pleasantly suprised by its energy. I won't be buying PBF DLH either, don't you lot get to watch these down the boozer? And finally, if pushed, I'm actually an ESPN2 and Telefuturo man, but I never miss a visit to my local fight bar on a Saturday night for Showtime and HBO.

Golden Boy may have won in "a cakewalk," but his face looked like he was strung by bees or bitten by snakes. This so-called Mayweather lite hung in there, and messed up that Hollywood face of Oscar. It was far from an Oscar performing by DLH. He did nothing that he can take to the throwdown with Money May. Money May is going get the Oscar in September and win in a masterpiece performance. Too bad for Mayweather Sr. He is just going to put DLH in the worst stormy weather of DLH's life. Holla!

If this were a like sparring match for De la Hoya, he ought to fire his sparring partners. Forbes busted up the face of the employer. Do sparring partners usually beat up their boss face like De la Hoyas got? If this light-punch guy could a job on De la Hoya's face like that, De la Hoya should stay away from Mayweather and Cotto. They would send him to a plastic surgeon.

Hey Radam, you're still up. Glad to see you see the first bit the way I do. Undecided about the second bit, but more into seeing it unfold than I was. If any of you out there in TSS land haven't checked out part 1 of the ESPN E60 mini series on Tyson over on espn boxing do so before you go to your pits tonight. It will make you feel warm in your hearts as you drift off to sleep. Mike is human at last. G'night all.

Keep in mind people. Oscar once again dominated his opponent, while Money is fake fighting giants the man that could've taken a decision from him in their last fight is focused on taking him out the next time around. Mayweather wasn't impressive in his fight with De la Hoya and will be even less impressive in his next fight with him. The only fight Oscar has lost decisively was against a much larger Hopkins.

oscar did get some bruises and he also took a punch right to the eyeball that made his eye look teary and glazed but hey that is fighting, oscar does have the skills to beat floyd mayweather , what he lacked was youth , energy , stamina
and the willingness to brawl if needed. Tonight he has brought a small percentage of that back, he is not the young oscar but it was as good a performance as could be asked at this stage of his career, and to those who belittle the signifigance of beating steve forbes, i will say this, stevie was a more credible opponent than , henry brussels, philip ndou, arturo gatti, or a completly shot sharmbe mitchell, all of whom mayweather has fought in the last few years in his rise to being the P4P g.o.a.t. I have said before the version of ODLH that fought vargas or trinidad or pernell whitaker would have beaten floyd mayweather in a close but sure decision. The 34-35 year old version of oscar has slowed enough that floyd can beat him in a close competetive decision. Oscar is a pridefull individual and does not want to lose to a punk like mayweather at any age, and i think it has motivated him to get into better form and that was evident tonight.

Kudos to Larry Merchant for sounding less than enthusiastic about ODLH-Floyd II. Like Larry, I also don't think it's a great fight; I expect more of the same. On Saturday night, I kept hoping that Oscar would do more against Forbes to force a stoppage instead of jabbing away for 12 rounds. Forbes is a singles hitter who wasn't doing enough or throwing enough punches to really hurt Oscar. Despite really not being busy as he should have been, Forbes did manage to mark up Oscar's face. Imagine what Floyd will do to Oscar on 9/20. Here's hoping that the rematch doesn't happen and that Floyd waits for the winner of Cotto vs. Margarito (my pick is Cotto in a late stoppage).

Stevie Forbes looked over-matched from the beginning. Question is why couldn't Oscar KO him ? And how could Forbes land so many punches ? This fight only reinforces my desire to MAYcott the DLH-PBF rematch. Oscar "looks great" stated by Emanuel is an hyperbole! He looked "great" against a much smaller and slower opponent in Forbes. Oscar has no chance against PBF the 2nd time around. And I'm not even a PBF Fan. But again, shame on us if we buy the PPV rematch of the Rusting Golden Boy and the "Boy in the Bubble" Floyd!

Actions Speak So Loudly, Can't Hear What You're Saying
"Here's the problem with Winky, the man has OUTPRICED himself so many times that no one wants to even deal with him any more. Wright believes he's entitled to a fight with Pavlik or Oscar, but come on, a draw with Taylor, and he then refuses to do the rematch, followed by a easy win over Quartey, and then the UGLY fight with B-Hop. No one wants to see him after that. Winky needs to go back to the basics and work his way back to a big fight; sitting on the sidelines crying out for a $ fight ain't the way to do it. Get back in the ring. Actions speak louder than words."
