Tarver Calls Out Calzaghe
By Rick Folstad
TAMPA - There’s a guy in this town just looking for a fight.
He doesn’t want to meet some punk in a dark alley, or cause a disturbance in a friendly neighborhood saloon, maybe break some chairs and bottles. He wants this fight to be held someplace legitimate, someplace where the money is good, the rules are written down, and there’s somebody standing close by to make sure no one cheats and gets away with it.
The guy in this town itching for a fight looks like an accountant and sounds like an unemployed postal worker. A southpaw, he says he doesn’t care what city or town they hold this fight in, as long as they hold it somewhere. How about Milwaukee, Sydney, Burbank, Sheffield? He doesn’t care. Just book it. All he wants is the chance to prove that he’s the best light-heavyweight in the world. If he lived on your block, you’d probably call him a bully.
IBF light-heavyweight champ Antonio Tarver, born in Orlando and claiming Tampa as his hometown, is looking for Wales’ newest champion, Joe Calzaghe. He’ll meet him at high noon on Main Street if that works for Joe and the pay is good.
Maybe Tarver is feeling jilted.
“Everyone was mentioned as Calzaghe’s potential next opponent but me, the true light-heavyweight champion,“ Tarver was quoted as saying in a press release following Calzaghe‘s win over Bernard Hopkins on Saturday. “I am the real legend killer. I beat Roy Jones, Jr., not once, but twice. I have also beaten Glen Johnson and Clinton Woods…I‘m on my way to unifying the belts this year. I will fight Calzaghe in the U.S., in the U.K. or wherever he wants to fight.”
Sounds like someone anxious to duke it out. Tarver doesn’t claim he’ll just beat Calzaghe, he’s gone a little further with his boast, delivered a second poke in the eye.
“I am putting the world on notice that I am the boxer who can stop Calzaghe,“ Tarver said. “Having just beaten his fellow countryman, Clinton Woods, Calzaghe should step up and fight me to defend the honor of his country.”
Pop quiz: The real light-heavyweight champion of the world is: A. A gangling southpaw from Orlando; B. A tall, slender, quiet guy named Chad Dawson; C. A friendly chap from Wales; D. None of the above.
The light-heavyweight division isn’t so much a weight class as it is a neighborhood barbecue, a gathering place for disgruntled super-middleweights and frustrated cruiserweights.
There was a time long, long ago - even before the Roy Jones, Jr. era - when there was only one crowned light-heavyweight champ of the world, and no cruiserweight or super-middleweight divisions. This was back in the time when Volkswagens and Mustangs still roamed the earth in great numbers, back before e-mails, laptops and American Idol. This was back when it was still safe to eat bacon, open a door for a lady or cut someone off in traffic.
There was no confusion back then. You knew who the light-heavyweight champ was. He was Bob Foster. Or he was Archie Moore or Dick Tiger or Joey Maxim. Billy Conn was a pretty good light-heavy until he moved up to the heavyweight division to fight no ordinary Joe.
But they served alone.
Now, like many other weight divisions, we’ve got a log jam at 175 pounds, give or take a couple cheeseburgers. You’ve got Tarver, Dawson, WBO champ Zsolt Erdei, and Calzaghe, the man who beat the man (Hopkins), who beat the man (Tarver).
I’m going with answer D.

Tarver deserves to be in the mix because of his win over Clinton Woods. What amazes me is that Tarver thinks he's the real light heavyweight champion. Is he serious? He used to be the champ before he got his butt handed to him by Hopkins. Now, Calzaghe has whupped Hopkins. Logic tells me that makes Calzaghe the champ. I hope Tarver gets his turn for a big fight, because he deserves it if he keeps winning. But make no mistake: If he fights Calzaghe, Tarver will be the challenger, not the champ.

Tarver is a joke. Why did Tarver not get mentioned as a potential opponent for Calzaghe? Because he's an afterthought, insignificant, and boring. Tarver got whitewashed by Hopkins, and Calzaghe thoroughly dominated B-Hop. Antonio should just retire. His legacy is built on beating a washed-up and disinterested Roy Jones. It's not enough. Unfortunately, I don't see any options for Joe. Evidently Team Pavlik want nothing to do with him, so that's out the window. Roy Jones? That's for cash, not legacy. RJJ is a shell of himself. Trinidad? Give me a break. Dawson? Not enough name recognition. Erdei? Who?? Glen Johnson? That's a great fight but not way too much risk for what he'd make. He'd be better off fighting Jones. Miranda? A great action fight but the same problem as exists with Johnson. JC has very few options right now.

Actually, Calzaghe is the man who beat the man (Hopkins) who beat the man (Tarver) who beat the man (Jones). I'll go with (C), therefore: "the friendly chap from Wales".

Tarver should stop yapping and check his geography, Wales isn't in England, it's a country, hence Calzaghe isn't a countryman of Woods, and if he wanted to defend his country's honor he'd have to eat a lot of pies and move up to cruiserweight and fight David Haye (an Englishman) who ko'ed his mate (and countryman) Enzo last month. Boyo. Mind you, you don't get much more Welsh than Jones do you? Doesn't Tarver already want a date with Bad Chad anyway, or is he having second thoughts about that one. He should move back to Orlando and buy some mouse ears.

White Folks are Funny, Joe got a spilt decision against B HOp and Yahoo and Espn gave the fight to Hopkins, Joe C woud not beat Tarver nor Jones.Hopkins didnt throw enough punches........ Jones and Tarver would kill Joe C.... A shell of Roy Jones who beat B Hop would beat Joe C.... If you want to use that ignorant logic and Roy Jones have WINS against TARVER, HOPKINS and WOODS...... Joe C couldnt even knock out B Hop, he doesnt have the power to beat Hopkins, Tarver lost like 50 pounds before he foguth Hopkins....
Sorry, but I pray he fights Roy Jones Jr, end anothr great white hope similar to Hatton vs Mayweater

It would be a terrible fight between Sissy Joe Calzaghe and Delusional Antonio Tarver. Let these chumps do whatever in Wales. Nobody in the USA wants to see either one. No American wants to see a slapping fool. Especially one who slaps a man in his balls, than admits to it. Americans like to man up hand to hand or man to man. Not man to slapping or feeling on the $exual organ of another one. And as for Tarver, he is one of those cheeseburgers. And most of the time, he fights like he cut cheese. The dude is the worst case of smelly flatulence. Let him blow his stuff in the British Empire. The Brits can have him, and keep Sissy Joe at home. Let the two lads have a go at it, but not in the USA. Fo' sure!

With Chris Byrd dropping down in weight and joining the 75 pounders, the division may actually produce a number of quality match-ups. I don't see Hopkins being a force going forward. Great line from andy from newcastle about Tarver. "He should move back to Orlando and buy some mouse ears." Note: Unlike Tarver, Andy isn't geographically challenged.

Calzaghe deserves respect for his wins. I can't believe the hate for him. He was never gonna look good against Hopkins but he still beat him in a foreign country, whereas a guy like Hopkins is just content to fight in the US. That ain't a real champion. Check out Cunningham. He's got balls to go to a place like Poland and Germany and beat their white boys. I'm not saying Calzaghe's a legend but he deserves recognition for his fights with Lacy, Kessler & Hopkins. Dude is 36 himself, so it's not like he's young. Why do people think Pavlik is duckin Calzaghe? As I've said, I remember Pavlik's camp saying that they are fighting Lockett to get Calzaghe's attention. Also, why does he need a fight like this at this stage in his career, Pavlik is still green. Personally, I think Tarver is Calzaghe's best options. I think Tarver would punish Calzaghe. As someone else said, he lost to Hopkins after losing all that weight and coming off a movie. Even if Calzaghe beat Jones, Tarver and Pavlik, americans still wouldn't be happy though. They'd just make more excuses.

"Wales is part of England" -- hmm, now there's a lesson in geography for us all ... Do you mean it's part of *Great Britain* or *the UK*, perchance? But yes, clearly, it's us Brits being "stupid", isn't it ("fo' sure!", as this other annoying **** keeps saying)? As for the "White folks are funny" comment, even if it were true that "black folks" dominate boxing these days (and it isn't: look at the heavyweight, supermiddleweight and middleweight divisions, for example), consider the likes of Ricky Hatton, Kelly Pavlik, Clinton Woods, the Klitchko brothers, Joe Calzaghe ... consider their characters and personalities ... then compare them to the likes of Tyson, Hopkins, Mayweather, Tarver ... Do you see any pattern here? Who do you think are the most "funny"? I know it's not politically correct to say it, but since you say "white folks are funny", let me voice a question surely on many people's minds: why exactly is it that so many black sports personalities are such shameless loudmouthed f***ing arseholes?!!

Yes, Bobby, you keep praying to the Almighty Juju for the downfall of the "White Folks". In the meantime, while you're bowing and scraping to your imaginary buddy in the sky to help black athletes beat white athletes in order to give you some residual sense of self-respect, we'll look after world affairs and plan the future of humanity, shall we? You know, that thirty-point average IQ difference probably does make us seem a little "funny" to you folks -- did you know that we can even count beyond ten without using our fingers or toes?!

"The best athletes in the world" come in all ethnicities. Some of the greatest idiots also come in all ethnicities (and colors). A lot of times, TSS World is full of wackos with miserable lives. And, of course, they are going to come up with all type of garbage of no value. These delusional bigots have no life, no friends and no guts, and great hallucinations of race and/or nation grandeur. Holla!

Yup! The Ghost Pavlik would kick Slappy Joe's arsh worse than Hopkins did. This slappy red coat would get beat silly by Pavlik. Pavlik would knock off his Pinocchio nose. This trash Damian, a cripple and bottom in the British Empire, is trying to pick a fight with anybody and everybody. He is lonely, low and confused. He is probably not even a Brit. And it doesn't matter, any way. Because nobody would like that bottom trash. The British Empire has as many black and brown athletes as it has whites, who are and were great. This fool is trying to make it seem like the Empire is white. WRONG! I have been there. See, I am well-travelled. This knucklehead is not. That is the last attention I will give him. He eats on it. This is his way of surviving his pitiful, pathetic existence (A cyberspace terrorist hanging out in TSS world with rhetorical firecrackers. He is a low-budget bum.) Fo' sure!

Calzaghe won deserverdly although his performance was well under par, Hopkins is a legendary asshole and Tarver is well on the way to taking on that mantle, although Jones isnt the fighter he used to be none of the prementioned are and that includes Calzaghe, but Jones is a legend in boxing history and that would be a good fight for JC. Pavlik, the Ghost, and elusive as ever, well the name says it all, hes already avoiding JC having been approached but its only americans that believe he could beat JC. Its sad but JC could beat all challengers whatever status and he would still not be recognised in America, just like the Eastern European heavies, i know they arent the greatest personalities but theres no American heavy coming close. It seems too often that Americans can only embrace their own champions and label them greats or legends, admittedly the likes of PBF are total class acts, but JC isnt that far behind. I really would like to see Pavlik fight Kessler first, i genuinely dont think he could beat Kessler, and although JC isnt the strongest light heavy or super middle, Pavlik wont gain strength moving up, just get even slower. Pavlik would be totally outclassed, a good performance from Jones could make for a good fight but id still expect Joe to win. He ought to retire after as hes nothing else to prove and some people will never admit his excellence so theres little point in trying to please those that never will be.

Yo bulldog. Sissy Joe and the easter european heaveyweights are not great. Bottom line is they're wack. If they were great we would embrace them. We embraced your boy Lennox Lewis, Pacman, Kostya Tsyzu, Quartey, All the great Mexicans. Those are just random names, we even embraced Hatton after awhile. That just proves you wrong. Sissy Joe and the heavyweights are wack. They are super heavyweights compared to the rest of the division and still dont look good. They need a super heavyweight division in pro boxing.

I thought this was "thesweetsciencecom" not some ethnic, race ranting, fanatical website! Why are we being consumed with matters that have nothing to do with boxing! Race has nothing to do with who is champ in any division! As a matter of fact it has everything to do with who is the best fighter, period! These silly non-sensical rants are meaningless and utterly disgraceful to all who participate.
So, as a Puerto Rican, I'm offended that we were not even mentioned in this idiotic squabble! (JK) but seriously get back to boxing!

Actions Speak So Loudly, Can't Hear What You're Saying
"Here's the problem with Winky, the man has OUTPRICED himself so many times that no one wants to even deal with him any more. Wright believes he's entitled to a fight with Pavlik or Oscar, but come on, a draw with Taylor, and he then refuses to do the rematch, followed by a easy win over Quartey, and then the UGLY fight with B-Hop. No one wants to see him after that. Winky needs to go back to the basics and work his way back to a big fight; sitting on the sidelines crying out for a $ fight ain't the way to do it. Get back in the ring. Actions speak louder than words."
