Oscar Wants Forbes, And "Money"..Then Cotto?
By Michael Woods
For a man who swears that he isn't looking past what's on the plate right in front of him, an appetizer named Steve Forbes, Oscar De La Hoya sure seems to be licking his chops a whole bunch as he contemplates his entree (Floyd Mayweather) and his dessert (Miguel Cotto), his fistic last supper.
Oscar took questions form the press on Wednesday afternoon, as he he winds down his training camp in Puerto Rico in preparation fro his May 3rd showdown with Contender alum Forbes at the Home Depot soccer field in Los Angeles.
The fight will be shown on "free" HBO, and is perceived by Oscar and pundits to be a rust-shedding exercise against a foe who holds some vaguely similar skills and characteristics as Mayweather.
De La Hoya (38-5) , should he gobble up the Forbes (33-5) appetizer, as he is expected to by many, has a re-do set with Mayweather on September 20, in Las Vegas.
Any true fight fan recalls that Oscar faced off with Floyd last May 5, and ODLH dropped a split decision to the man then referred to as Pretty Boy Floyd, but whose nickname was switched to "Money" after he finished counting the piles of dough he took home for beating Oscar.
The subject of Mayweather, and the third and final fight of 2008 for Oscar, his career capper, came up pretty often in the call which was held for 126 journalists. Could there be a danger that Oscar could have his best laid plans upended by the light-hitting 31-year-old, Forbes, because he's focusing not on the task in front of him, but on his to-do list? He says he will not get surprised by Forbes, and will be ready to rock on May 3.
"I've been training since January for this fight," he said. "I'm taking the steps to be ready."
"The steps" include a re-partnering with Floyd Mayweather Sr, who stepped away from Oscar's corner when Floyd Jr and ODLH scrapped. Freddie Roach filled that vacuum, but Senior is back with Oscar, and the fighter sounds ecstatic about that.
"Mayweather has taken me to another level," he said, "the way he does in all my fights. Freddie is a tremendous trainer, in the top two or three in the world. But me and Floyd have a connection, working good together. Overlooking Forbes will not be the case." He will not make the same mistake he made against Felix Sturm in 2004, when he underestimated the German, and escaped with a UD12, he told the journalists.
Oscar said he called Senior a few months after the faceoff with Junior and there was no weirdness involved. Just about every day, the fighter and trainer talk about Oscar's performance against Junior, ODLH said, and he admitted he is "training for Floyd." But, he hastened to add, his mind is on Forbes. "My main goal is to beat Floyd Junior," he then said. If I'm Forbes, and I'm hearing this, I'm emboldened.
Oscar said he's right around 150 pounds now, and that he still doesn't hate the drudgery of training camp. "I want these three fights and go out a champion," he said. "I know for sure my last time in the ring will be in December."
Bless De La Hoya, he really does seem able to convince himself that he will be able to perform at a higher level than he has before, each and every time he gloves up. This time, he said he thinks that we have not even seen his best, what he's capable of doing. He'll be popping jabs, 40, 50, 60 a round, he said, on May 3.
Oscar told the press that he was not reuniting with Floyd Senior merely to get a publicity pop. The trainer has finally taught him, after all these years, how to relax in the ring, and that could well be the key to propelling him to a win over Floyd Junior, he said. He's feeling so optimistic, he said, he might well fight another five years. Oscar paused and then said, "That was a joke."
But future plans are definitely on his mind. There's that open date in December, for instance. Who might snag that plum assignment?
"You can't really rule anyone out," he said. He intends to beat Forbes, and then Money Mayweather and then.....?
"Obviously Miguel Cotto is considered one of the best," he said. "He's fighting Margarito, obviously we know that is an easy fight for Cotto." There you have it--Mayweather/Oscar winner gets Cotto. Most of us who follow the sport intently have believed that to be the most logical path, so that's not earth-shattering breaking news.
Concerning his promotional business, ODLH said he wasn't getting into MMA right now, that he'd like to see the industry settle down first. He also took the time, as did Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer, to toss some jabs at the Nevada Commission, because their judges haven't been kind to Golden Boy fighters in recent months.
Oscar didn't get the nod against Floyd and JMM didn't have his hand raised against Pacquiao, and Schaefer counts five other instances where the Golden Boy fighter was snubbed. Oscar initially took pains to compliment the commission when asked about this phenomenon, but Schaefer was more heated in his critique. He said that he thinks Oscar won't leave it to the judges on May 3, and said moving forward he hopes Nevada judges will be "more honest." Oscar then came back to the subject, in a more heated tone.
"It does piss me off that Golden Boy doesn't get the necessary respect," he said. "We can do something about it and we bare going to do something about it."
Hey, maybe May 3 will be Free Optometrist Visit For the Judges Night at the Home Depot Center?

Oscar is one of my boys. But I don't like the way he is sounding. Maybe he is getting too cocky from hanging around Floyd Joy Mayweather Sr. Senior has flipped. He is reciting poems about himself, like he really is all that. He is okay, but he is not the top active trainer in the game, yet. There are several boxing guro guns, who have outdone him in producing contenders and champions. To name a few -- Tommy Brooks, Ronnie Shields, Freddie Roach and, of course, the great Manny Steward is still pretty active. Senior is a helluva poet, but he is still a punk trainer. That is why his son Money May fired his a$$ and took the house and car. Senior wants revenge, but it will never happen. One thing Money May will not take from his pops, and that is a defeat. Holla!

Maybe somebody is hanging out in Block D of the penitentiary. Or maybe Block M, the mental ward. There is just one Money Mayweather. And he is creme de la creme, cream or the cream, the very best. Ancient Oscar is the old master who would school COTTO(N). Fo' sure!

I don't care who Oscar fights, all I want to see is a solid Oscar trying to leave the sport fighting his best. yes, the guy is old, and yes, he gets very tire in the ending rounds of the fight, but I think he has all the potential to focus himself in Forbes, then MAY, and then Cotto if that's his final choice. I haven't seen Oscar in a good fight since the time he defeated Vargas. I know everyone says he looked good with Nicotine-Mayorga, but who is Mayorga? Hopefully now that DLH will be fighting as a welterweight we will see some of that speed and flare he had in those fights versus Mosley and Whitaker. May 3rd, your boy Coco will be @ The Home Depot Center. Prepare to see me on HBO with a big sign that says OSCAR IS GOD. By the way, Emmanuel does suck. He wasn't effective with Taylor and recently Cintron.

donputo you are a joke. i hear you talking all of your cotto smack all the time but you never say WHY he would beat mayweather. to me, cotto seems like a fighter who is not on the same level (physically and mentally) that mayweather is on. he would be out smarted and out lasted. until you can give reasons why cotto is the man, mayweather is the man. P4P king and champ.
p.s. "scareweather" is not that clever. it doesn't even rhyme. grow up.

Radam G it seems like everybody disagrees with you about Manny Stewart. He's wack, face it. Anyway, DLH will not fight Cotto in december because he will lose to PBF and PBF will fight Cotto in december and knock him out. Than that will be PBF last fight or maybe one more for some big money in 09'. Possibly Mosley or Winky, thats what im hoping for anyway. And he will silence the critics and retire undefeated as one of the best p4p ever. True story

De la hoya will probably beat Forbes, then will lose to mayweather. After that, he is done. In december who will he fight and who wantst to see it. when he loses to mayweather his only option would be to fight someone a little easier to deal with. He should fight Antonio Margarito no matter what since he thinks Margaritos a pushover. I really like that kid and I'd like to see him get that big check and send oscar back behind a desk.

Mayweather is a great fighter. Too bad he doesn't want to fight any real threats. I don't think he's a coward; he just has a wonderland idea of what he's accomplished in this sport. Mayweather has been quoted as saying he's got nothing left to prove and he can retire now in the knowledge he'll be remembered as an all-time great. Meanwhile, Cotto is turning back the best challengers in his division and probably will fight Margarito next. If Cotto keeps going like he's going, he'll be remembered as a far greater fighter than Mayweather, especially if they never meet in a ring to determine true superiority. Cotto is a fighter, and fighters fight. That's why fans remember REAL FIGHTERS who are exceptionally good at their craft. They won't remember Mayweather. He'll go down in history as a talented but safety-first boxer who never tested his own abilities.

Manny has worked with 46 champions -- 18 that he started in boxing from the amateurs, six who started with him from fight one or two in the pros. Or those 46 champions, 16 were tall. Thirty were the typical height of the division or three or four inches shorter. Manny is great, period! He can, could and did work with any talent or potential or height or weight. He is not a miracle worker or a curer of a mentally-blind boxer who doesn't listen or try and then psychs himself out. Boxers who psych out need a Drew Bundini or a Panama Lewis or any type of spiritualist who motivates or brainwashes weak minded fighters into believing in themselves. What have you "done lately" with your research? Anybody can mouth off and bad mouth great ones. But when the truth and hard facts come about, the hater still has excuses. I love haters' comments. It reveals their comprehension levels, a yearning for manipulation and a narcissistic personality, who dares someone to disagree. Holla!

Cotto did go to another level in his last two fights against Mosley and Gomez, but solely on technique. He lost that fierceness he showed before in the Judah bout and fights before, technique-boxing skill wont matter against Tony. Margarito will walk him straight down and give him a reality check in July. Cotto fought real cocky against Gomez, didnt look so humble, put the guy out already -- dont tee off on him then walk away, just finish the job. Cotto seems to think because he got the UD against Mosley he's a superior boxer now, doesnt mean shi*t when your opponent doesnt care what you throw at him, he's going to continue to punch and try and punish you. I see Margarito pressuring Cotto like no has ever b4, and he's going to make him fight...I see Margarito as the last man standing on July 26th. I could be wrong, but thats the way I see it.

there is nothing "easy" about margarito... especially when your chin is as soft as cotto's... margarito is going land those ugly wild looping shots all over cotto. cotto's going to get hurt, and try to do what he always does. like what he did to corley, what he did to torres and what he did to judah... hes going to go low (kind of like a woman or child would do). the only thing is, i dont think a low blow will do anything to margarito. except make him mad and fight crazier... cotto is going to get taken out.

Did I read that correctly?? De La Hoya said:
"Obviously Miguel Cotto is considered one of the best," he said. "He's fighting Margarito, obviously we know that is an easy fight for Cotto."
I'm a fan of De La Hoya and all, but wow, he really feels Margarito will be an easy opponent for Cotto! Get real. Margarito is a Savage in every way. Cotto has a suspect Chin, and Margarito can't be hurt. Interesting, I think Oscar would be terrified to fight a Savage like Margarito.

None of them would fight Margarito, at least Cotto will be probably with a little help from Arum. Margarito has always been a high risk, low reward type of opponent. That's why Mayweather wouldn't have fought him. If Margarito beats Cotto, he needs to go looking for the winner of Williams/Quintana II. If it's Williams, then that'll be a good match, much better than their first I think because I think that fight has woken Margarito up a bit.

I for one am not watching, rather paying, for any fight that DLH or PBF promotes. Unless of course it's with one of the welterweights in contention. Why doesn't Oscar fight Paul Williams or Cintron as a warm-up to PBF ? I would pay to see that ! These 2 (Oscar and Floyd) are both pulling the wool over all of our eyes if we pay for their 2nd fight. Which, by the way, is going to be OVER-Promoted and UNDER-Whelming again!
However, on another point, people point to Cotto's "weak" chin and say that he is going to lose to Margarito. Like I've posted before and will do so now. Cotto is not a stupid fighter he is a Boxer FIRST. Ask yourself, when he knew he beat Mosley on the cards , did he sit there and trade with him the last 3 rounds ? No, he didn't! He out-boxed him the last 3 rounds for the win! He combo'ed and landed clean punches for the win. Again he's not an idiot he'll trade when he has to and he'll box when he has to. No two ends about it.
Just like people like to believe that Margarito's has a strong chin I also believe he hasn't been tested with the likes of a Cotto. Who has power in both hands and will make Cintron's jab look like vanilla cream pie when he lands flush on Margaritos face. If Cintron opened him up in just 5 rounds can you imagine what Cotto will do ? Anyone who knows boxing, like Oscar, knows that this fight will be easy for Cotto. That's why he made the comment! And contrary to popular belief Cotto is not Margarito, a put your head down and go forward type! Cotto does it only when necessary. And as many here have seen he can also get outside and outbox his opponents as well!
So Cotto wins and will fight PBF! Now that's a fight we all want to see!
Yo soy Boriqua paque tu lo sepa !

Margarito is a true warrior and so is Cotto. Anything can happen when these two enter a ring. These are true fighters. In my opinion anyone who says he is a fan of the current Money Mayweather (the welterwieght version) is just a fan of his money making prowess and not a fan of boxing. Money is not going to fight anyone not named De la hoya or Hatton. He will probably lose to Oscar in order to secure a third bout making millions in the process while raping the general public who doesn't have much boxing knowledge. DHL needs to call it quits because he hasn't won a fight that actually matters in about 5 years. The only way for him to remain relevant since he can't beat any top guys is to make entertaining fights which will not happen against Money. Margarito and Cotto are both warriors however I believe Margarito is too one dimensional to beat Cotto. Cotto can brawl when he needs to. He can box, He has a great jab, He can fight backwards and His defense and chin have improved by leaps and bounds. If you watch closely Cotto blocks many of the shots coming to him and he hasn't been seriously hurt at Welter. Plus his hand speed his greatly underrated. Ask Carlos Quintana. I also believe he can beat Money. Money is a reflex guy not neccesarily a boxer. He doesn't use his Jab much. Doesn't throw many combinations (i'm speaking of the current version of money). He just slips punches and counters with usually one punch, the right hand. He beat Baldomir, De la hoya and hatton like that but he'll need alot more for Cotto.

Actions Speak So Loudly, Can't Hear What You're Saying
"Here's the problem with Winky, the man has OUTPRICED himself so many times that no one wants to even deal with him any more. Wright believes he's entitled to a fight with Pavlik or Oscar, but come on, a draw with Taylor, and he then refuses to do the rematch, followed by a easy win over Quartey, and then the UGLY fight with B-Hop. No one wants to see him after that. Winky needs to go back to the basics and work his way back to a big fight; sitting on the sidelines crying out for a $ fight ain't the way to do it. Get back in the ring. Actions speak louder than words."
