De La Hoya Reloading For Mayweather Jr.

By David A. Avila

East Los Angeles boxer Oscar De La Hoya returns to Southern California and he’s got big Floyd Mayweather riding shotgun.

The $30 million dollar-a-fight man seeks to end this last year with a bang. He wants all the components locked and loaded for the grand finale and for his fight against Steve “Two Pounds” Forbes.

Forbes, the former junior lightweight champion, is chapter one at the Home Depot Center on May 3.

The fight will be shown on HBO.

De La Hoya plans to fight three times in 2008 and then call it a career inside the ring. The theme of his take off should be: “Beating Floyd Mayweather Jr.”

It’s no secret, De La Hoya wants to beat little Floyd then walk into the sunset and Forbes presents a slight version of Mayweather.

“Because he (Forbes) has that style and I’m looking for a Floyd Mayweather fight,” De La Hoya (38-5, 30 KOs) said without hesitation. “It’s a combination of a number of things why I took this fight.”

Most boxing fans know De La Hoya is the “Golden Boy” of the sport and has raked in more than $400 million lacing up the gloves. But most do not know that with a mere shake of the finger or furrow of the brow he can make or break a fighter’s career. But money is not the most important thing.

“Oscar is not in there for the money, although money is important, it’s for the legacy of being able to beat Mayweather,” said Sugar Shane Mosley a former antagonist, but now a friend and partner in Golden Boy Promotions. “The first fight that Oscar had with Mayweather, he might have had the edge on Mayweather.”

De La Hoya realizes he came close a year ago, but wasn’t fully prepared for a 12-round fight against the current Pound for Pound king Mayweather Jr. So he’s reloading with poppa Mayweather.

“Had I trained Oscar for that fight he would have won. I guarantee you,” said Mayweather Sr. who first began training De La Hoya after he lost in 2000 to Mosley.

Big fights are the motivating ingredients for De La Hoya and always have been.

Ever since De La Hoya captured the gold medal at the Olympics in Barcelona, Spain in 1992, the slender Mexican-American with the non-boxing looks has thrived on big fights and big quests.

Forbes is a steppingstone, but a necessary half step when De La Hoya’s planning to fight later in the year the man who perfected the Mayweather style of boxing. Forbes loves his role in the match that plays like a Shakespearean tragedy.

“They love each other more than people know,” said Forbes about the Mayweather clan. “If you pick on Roger, Floyd (Senior) is going to jump in too.”

For those not up to date with the other role players, Forbes was formerly trained by Floyd Mayweather Sr. and is now guided by Roger Mayweather who also trains Floyd Mayweather Jr.

“It’s funny because it’s a win-win situation for the Mayweather family anyway,” said Forbes, who lived with the Mayweathers for a year in Las Vegas. “Roger told me if I beat him then Floyd Jr. will fight me.”

Now living in Las Vegas, Forbes was discovered while fighting in Portland, Oregon and was sponsored by a person who knew the Mayweathers. During a Golden Gloves tournament the Mayweathers looked at him and told him to come to Las Vegas.

Weight has always been an issue for Forbes, who won his world title at 130 pounds.

“I fought at 130 pounds too,” De La Hoya responds.

Back in 1994 De La Hoya captured the WBO junior lightweight title against Jimmi Bredahl at the Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles. He defended it once against Italy’s Giorgio Campanella and was floored, but recovered to knock out the 130-pound opponent. Immediately De La Hoya moved up to 135 pounds where he beat Jorge “Maromero” Paez for the vacant WBO lightweight title in the same year.

In 1995 the De La Hoya explosion began when he blew out fellow Los Angeles resident Rafael Ruelas who held the IBF lightweight title. He stopped the San Fernando boxer in two rounds with a monstrous left hook at Caesars Palace and his career exploded into a million dollar industry.

“One thing about Oscar, he’s fought the best fighters of his era,” said Forbes, who admits he’s watched at least 25 of De La Hoya’s fights. “I’ve always been a fan of his. I’m a huge fan. I thought he beat Tito Trinidad, even though I thought he lost to Pernell Whitaker.”

Forbes uses the Mayweather style of boxing with a few added wrinkles. Whether it’s at 130 pounds where he always struggled due to weight, or at 154 pounds where he still struggled to make weight. It’s always been a problem for the Las Vegas fighter even against Grady Brewer in the Contender finale at the Staples Center in 2006.

“Honestly, I hardly trained for the fight against Grady Brewer,” Forbes said. “I want to show everybody that fight was not me.”

Slick-fighting Forbes was not successful in his first world title bid against Alejandro “Cobrita” Gonzalez in March 2000 at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio. That night he fought toe-to-toe with the former Mexican featherweight champion but lost a close decision. In his next title bid he out-boxed tough John Brown for the vacant IBF junior lightweight title.

Weight problems forced him to forfeit the title at Pechanga Resort and Casino back in 2002 and have always been a concern. Ironically, his nickname “Two Pounds” comes from surviving at birth at that weight through an incubation machine. Forbes is comfortable fighting at a higher weight. He’s also comfortable with the realization that he’s a testing ground for the Mayweather style of fighting.

“I knew he was going to fight somebody that was similar to Floyd (Mayweather Jr.),” said Forbes, 31, whose last fight was a win over another East L.A. fighter, Panchito Bojado. “I’m not going to run around I’m going to use my skills.”

De La Hoya promises he’ll fight three times this year, including against Forbes, then call it a career.

“Fighting here in Los Angeles really gives me chills,” said De La Hoya, 35, whose last fight in Southern California was in 2000 against his friend Mosley. “It’s not that I have to prove anything but it’s a plan. I’m at that stage in my career where I can’t take it further.”

If De La Hoya beats Forbes, then it’s on to Mayweather probably in September 2008.

Forbes smiles because he knows that boxers can’t overlook anyone, even if you’re named De La Hoya.

“It’s perfect for me because my goal is to make that not happen,” said Forbes of De La Hoya’s plans. “He’s looking ahead. He says he’s not, but he’s looking ahead.”

Tickets are still available but expect a sell out at the Home Depot Center that plans to seat 30,000 people.

“Oscar is the biggest name. I think anywhere we fight it would be like a homecoming for him,” said Forbes while chuckling. “You know at my house most of the people will be cheering for Oscar including my family.”

“This is exciting because opportunities like this don’t come around,” Forbes said, still smiling.

De La Hoya is not smiling because he knows there is no such thing as a tune up fight.

“I stressed right from the beginning I’m not falling into that trap,” said De La Hoya who remembers nearly losing to Germany’s Felix Sturm when preparing to fight Bernard Hopkins four years ago. “I just feel with Floyd Sr. in my corner he has the antidote to beat Stevie Forbes, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and to beat whoever.”

Chapter one begins next week.

rudy:  This fight is worthless, they arent even offering a decent undercard bout. Got a feeling that this fight will be like Gomez-Cotto, a gross mismatch - Forbes keeps talking about how he fought bigger guys on the Contender, thats the same BS logic that Gomez tried to use and look at the beat down he received. It's a glorified sparring session for Oscar, watching the countdown to the fight, it was more comical than anything -- talk about trying to polish a turd. I might have to watch the Marquez-Vazquez Trilogy documentary on Showtime instead, at least I'm guaranteed action there.

franco:  this fight is a slap in the face to our sport, shame on oscar and golden boy promotions!
Tuesday Apr 22, 2008
Madison:  Rudy is absolutely correct. No need to watch this one at all. Its too bad Steve Forbes has it in his head that he can win because I dont think he's got a shot. DE LA HOYA BY KO. Not saying it because im rooting for him, thats just the way the cookie will crumble. And im not looking forward to de la hoya/mayweather II either.
Tuesday Apr 22, 2008
lastround:  this should be another chapter in the novel of de la hoya and mayweather , thats the one we have to do not pay a dime , because both of them will be laughing at us straight to the bank ....... true boxing fans pass the word and dont pay mayweather - hoya 2, let de la hoya retire and mayweather fight real welters.......
Tuesday Apr 22, 2008
Robert Curtis:  They've got the billboards for this next match all over LA now. You can barely see Forbes lost in the dark background, while Oscar is up front filling up the whole frame. Oscar's image is bright and glowing and golden like a heavenly light is shining down on him from above. It's almost as obnoxious as the price of gas.
Tuesday Apr 22, 2008
Kool-Aid:  I'm not buying the fight...let me know when Mayweather-Cotto goes down and I'll drop the $59.95 then. Until that happens, I'm boycotting Floyd on PPV.
Tuesday Apr 22, 2008
Kool-Aid:  Unless, of course, Floyd decides to fight Mosley. That's the only other fight I'll buy off PPV that Floyd will be on. Until then, I'm putting that money in the tank!
Tuesday Apr 22, 2008
Radam G:  I hope that Oscar jam his big toe while jogging, and has to pull out of this bout. He says that he has chills about boxing in Los Angeles. Well, he should listen to his inner voice. I got a bad feeling about this. With the Golden Boy having bad nerves about boxing in LA, and thinking about barely getting passed Felix Sturm before tangling with Bernard Hopkins, he should just walk away. Snickering Forbes is saying that Oscar is in the web of a Shakespearean tragedy. I hope not! Holla!
Tuesday Apr 22, 2008
boxing fan:  I am not spending a dime on payper view for maywether unless he fights cotto or margarito
Tuesday Apr 22, 2008
Eastar:  Damn, you guys that are "boycotting" the Mayweather - De La Hoya fight are calling yourselves real boxing fans. That just goes to show you why casual fans make or break the sport, because the "real" fans are fickle. No love for a legend ( DeLa Hoya) who brought us so many memories through both the fights he won, and lost? Every new guy who gets on a win streak you want to jump on his bandwagon. That is why guys like Floyd get as much money as they could while the getting is good, and guys like Cotto get raped until they realize they don't have enough money to retire but its too late because they can't take, nor dishout enough punishment to get a big payday. Show some support for the legends and entrepeneurs of the game.

Eddue Kidnirnij:  oscar tko kicks mayweather butt
Wednesday Apr 23, 2008
BIGFREDO76:  Eastar I said the same thing 4 articules ago.very good point this guys dont understand that a huge part of the sport is business.de lahoya gotta get his before anyone else so does PBF,and veryone else.Keep up the good comments ,peace
Wednesday Apr 23, 2008
rudy:  I'll show Oscar some respect when he chooses to fight full time or be a promoter full time. Talks about doing what's best for boxing, what has he done so far? Provided us a crappy 12 round clinching affair with B-Hop and Calzaghe, a horrible mismatch with a pretender on May 3rd, then a fight that should NEVER be on PPV-Mosley vs Judah, how about raising the price of PPV's from the usual $45 to $55, or another wad of cash in his pockets with a meaningless fight with Floyd? At least Top Rank and DK Promotions are doing the best to deliver what the fans want. Arum and King are still driving the sport, Cotto vs Margarito, the double-header welterweight fights, Kelly Pavlik, the PacMan, and King-being the innovator that he is-providing a different avenue for fight fans to watch fights online. GBP is just a money hungry outfit....Dibella, Shaw, Goossen, Arum, King are the guys in the sport delivering the fights that fans want and if you look it -- they are the ones having the most successful shows and events.
Wednesday Apr 23, 2008
Robert Curtis:  Oscar and Money could make the same money or more fighting legitimate contenders instead of wrestlers or tune-ups or wrestlers. Oscar can make massive fortunes without ever lacing up ever again. It's his present ego which annoys me and some others it seems. I will never knock Oscar's past accomplishments. He stepped up to the best many times and didn't gripe and whine afterwards like some we all know. Okay, if Oscar wants to fight Money once more, fine. But please hang it up after that. Next thing you know, Oscar will be in the ring with Manny Pacquiao all blown up like the Michelin Man. You had your glory, Golden Boy, let the younger folks have theirs.
Wednesday Apr 23, 2008
BIGFREDO76:  Hey rudy you will show oscar respect for full time work?I havent seen a good Dk card in a minute so hes out Shaw gave us the trilogy of this generation but wait Golden Boy was co-promoter.Pacman-Marquez 2 was a goldenboy-arum promo.so i still dont get it are you mad he fights who he chooses or cuz hes making money on so-so fights? So are mad at arum for the last card?cotto-gomez?the undercard was better.I show Oscar respect cuz he fought the best at there best he ducked no one and who ever got in the way he paid to get out the way to fight the best.Hate on him all you want its your perrogative but you paying him now and very soon all the time cuz those other promoters are dinosaurs.Peace brotha
Wednesday Apr 23, 2008
Arturo:  Rudy is right about GBP being a money hungry group , the fighters/business partners (Barrera, Hopkins,Mosley,Oscar) have lost big fights int the past year ans a half. Oscar says that "he wants to go out witha bang" By fighting a 130 pound reality tv fighter , by boxing boxing a man (Floyd) who can probably has the stamina for 14 rounds. Who knows what is after that? Maybe a 8 rd. Trinidad rematch , I feel like Oscar could have been one of the best welterweight fighters of all time. He didn't have enough to box 12 rounds at a steady level with good rivals.BUT WE STLL WATCH HIM
Wednesday Apr 23, 2008
Eastar:  Lets not talk about King and all the fighters he promoted that are now broke. Ask FLoyd and Oscar about Arum and whether he gets fighters payed what they are worth. Pavlik is not fighting Auther Abraham no time soon. Wacman is avoiding Paulie Malanagi ( I can\'t spell his name for s#$%), and Cotto got his most notable victory from one of Golden Boys best boxers in Sugar Shane. Slappy vs B-Hop was one of the most important fights of the year causing a major shift in the pound for pound rankings, and in my opinion, established Joe Calzaghe as one of the greatest super middleweights ever. I would never had called Slappy Joe great before he got off the canvas in the first round to slap the Executioner around for twelve straight. Ya dig?
Wednesday Apr 23, 2008
rbk:  Eastar - Of course there's no love for a money-making farce that's already been played. REAL boxing fans won't pay a dime for this crap and shame on both the golden girl and fraud mayweather for milking this...if there's a god we'll have Forbes pull the unthinkable upset.
Wednesday Apr 23, 2008
pacfan #1:  I'm with the boycotting of Mayweather on PPV!!!Loud and clear!Mayweather makes the world of boxing unsatisfying and he doesn't even know it. DLH vs Mayweather 2 is a worthless fight and I would not pay to watch that fight. Show some balls Pretty Boy!!!!!We all know who you should be fighting, you should just retire like you said then.
Wednesday Apr 23, 2008
pacfan #1:  Fight Cotto or Margarito and win then you will hear my criticizing no more until then, NO RESPECT!!!!!!
Wednesday Apr 23, 2008
rudy:  DK cards: Jones vs Trinidad was a great PPV event at MSG and was by far a more entertaining affair than Slappy Joe-Hopkins; Cancun Mexico March 8th: Double header, Nate Campbell vs Juan Diaz (all action bout and destruction of Diaz) and then Peter vs Maskaev. That card alone is 10x better than anything GBP has delivered, and yeah GBP was involved with PacMan-Marquez, but the real honcho of that event was ARUM - he always has the final say anything that has to do with Manny. And yes your right, GBP is partial promoter of Vazquez -- but where the hell where they in promoting the BEST trilogy in recent memory? NO WHERE. Know your boxing Fredo or dont say nothing. Look at the other article Borges wrote, Hopkins-Calzaghe was BUST, Oscar had to pay back the casino $$$ and chop down the fighters pay bc the show was horrible. Like I said, money hungry outfit....til they prove me wrong
Wednesday Apr 23, 2008
engler:  GBP had nothing to do with the Vazquez/Marquez trilogy. They were on record as co promoters but did nothing of the sort. In fact they tried to sabotage the promotion. that is a fact.
Wednesday Apr 23, 2008
boxer:  Some of you people make me laugh. Pro boxing is about money. If you can make more money then you do it. They don't box for free. If you don't want to pay to watch it dont pay. De La Hoya's next fight is not pay per view. He's going to make a lot of money anyway. Fighting Mayweather is not just about money, its proving he can beat him. You all forget it was a split decision last time. He ran out of gas. Mayweather was losing the fight until De La Hoya ran out of gas. Its about trying to win. All athletes want to win. Some of you guys must not be athletes or you would understand this.
Wednesday Apr 23, 2008
Radam G:  Funny! Funny! Robert Curtis. I think that you have got ahold of some Pinoy coconut wine -- tuba. PacMan would never come into a bout looking like the Michelin Man. He eats natural, special foods from back home -- the best islands in the world -- Philippines (Mannyland, you got that right). No American steroid-filled food for him. We will never let Manny get poison with food, like George Foreman got poison with food and water when he fought "The Greatest" back in yesteryears. Holla!
Wednesday Apr 23, 2008
BIGFREDO76:  RUDY,RUDY I think i know my boxing as much as you.Golden boy was involved thats it we dont know the numbers. The numbers you throwing out are your opinion not actual numbers.GBP will be around along time.About arum being the honcho funny that fight wouldnt of happened without him (arum) conceding as much as GDP.Now the trilogy thats every promoter involved Shaw,GBP.but you said shaw was better than GBP in promoting what fight if the last good fight was promoted by both.DK RJJ-trinidad let him do it again lets see how good he does. When is the next DK card?Arum next card is Chavez jr. are you serious Hey rudy get your S*** straight b4 you say i dont know boxing like it or not GBP is gonna be around a long time and he dont promote in the GAY area known as Frisco
Wednesday Apr 23, 2008
rudy:  @ boxer: thats the thing though, Oscar talks about GBP like they are going to save boxing and bring it back to the mainstream, as if his promotional team and banker friend are going to be the 'Moses' of the sport. That is what leaves them open to criticism.
Wednesday Apr 23, 2008
Cotto's #1 Fan:  All you Mayweather fans talk about money like Mayweather is giving you half of it. it's about money for some boxers like DLH and Mayweather, it's about giving the fans a action pack fight like Cotto, Pavlik and Paquiao deliver. the same dam'n thing is going to happen in the rematch. DLH will follow Mayweather across the ring, while Mayweather is going to try to win on points, this isn't rocket science. and for all you Cotto haters, Cotto did exatcly what he had to do with Gomez, the same way Mayweather had to do exatcly agains't Gatti.
Wednesday Apr 23, 2008
BIGFREDO76:  Cotto fan listen i see your comments and i give props to whoever defends there boxer like you papa. But answer me this what fighter doesnt fight for money?YOU mention DLH and PBF as money hungry but if they offered 20 million to ure guy cotto to fight a scrub he would cuz hes gonna get paid ,so dont come with thing like the only boxers you mentioned fight action fights i can mention many more boxers and fighters that bring the action. So b4 anyone else says cotto fights because he loves boxing i bet he wouldnt foght for free, then i will tell you cotto fights for the love of it.If DLH wants to pay cotto 20 million he has the power to do it nameme someone else than can?So kiss the hand of the Golden boy
Thursday Apr 24, 2008
rudy:  Fredo you have no boxing sense, the Arum is promoting Chavez Jr but making BANK at the same time feeding him bums, putting him on a cheap PPV, and having him fight in the Southwest where he is a HUGE draw. Why risk it when he can milk that? GBP lost a lot of $$$ w/B-Hop vs Calzaghe, and I'll bet you anything that Planet Hollywood Casino will NEVER host another fight for them after the bombed show last weekend -- and My #s???Tthat's straight from the source, RON BORGES of TSS - read the article, knowledge is power. About Marquez-Manny, GBP needed Arum and Manny to even make a decent promotion, remember what Marquez and GBP where doing b4 that, fighting Rocky Juarez in another bust of a promotion. DKP is involved the Tim Bradley-Junior Witter & Froch-Inkin ShoBox card, that is a respectable card that features new blood to the sport that are solid action fighters. King has Nate Campbell, the real champ 135 -- probably will be facing paper champ Casamayor later in the year -- and ofcourse he's involved with giant sorrows of boxing the HW's with Valuev fighting at the end of May. Does anybody remember GBP's HW fighter? That's right the Sultan of Suck, Ibragimov - LMAO!!!!!!! GBP might be around for awhile but right now, they need to get their sh*t straight.
Thursday Apr 24, 2008
BIGFREDO76:  A response is warranted.Rudy you cannot give all the credit to arum, just by jr being chavez's kid i bet seels plenty of ppv so that doesnt really make arum good more like lucky in that he has that fighter. But im pretty sure that arum right now has the more popular and up and coming stars no arguing there. What im talking about is the money making GBP is making you try to diminsh it with blatant hate and that not right.GBP did not need arum as much as you think in the pacman-marquez fight.remember pacman previous ppv against solis about 100k in ppv and in the maruez rematch 350k where did those other 250k come from yup you guessed it two promoters more followers.finally Rudy just cuz you think there bust fights doesnt mean they dont make money.HEy Rudy whats that on your face.......yup HATERADE
Thursday Apr 24, 2008
rudy:  No it aint 'haterade' -- nothing but facts. what's that I smell on you? its that's a new cologne, "Jealousy"
Thursday Apr 24, 2008
BIGFREDO76:  You stated no facts just recycled news brotha. You will be paying GBP for a long time to watch his cards and dont act like your not.OUCH watch out RUDY thats my man meat you handling son
Thursday Apr 24, 2008
donputo69:  thank you cotto's#1..you couldnt say it any better..everybody talks about how cotto fought a parking attendant look alike in gomez...lmao..what about when scareweather fought gatti huh?..i see nobody talking about that huh?..
Thursday Apr 24, 2008
rudy:  Done wasting my time arguing with an uneducated fan like you Fredo, miceria!
Friday Apr 25, 2008
BIGFREDO76:  Y you mad Rudy?cuz i dont agree with the crap you stated?dam son i thought you could stand behind youre comments like a man but name calling is little lady stuff. That kool this miseria got youre panties in a knot. You know the saying"cant stand the heat get out the kitchen son".GO clean your toto son
Friday Apr 25, 2008
pacfan #1:  You say boxers fight for money, that's true. Imagine how much money can be put in the table if there was a Cotto vs Mayweather fight or even Margarito. They've made a name for themselves and they both have big fan base why not fight. I'll tell you why, NO GUTS, NO HEART, NO GLORY, on the part of Mayweather. He says there is nothing left to prove no one is to fight but who has he fought hands down!!!!!!
Friday Apr 25, 2008
BIGFREDO76:  Hey pacfan 1 i never argued they fight for money.i can imagine the kindof money they can make cotto/dlh or even cotto/mayweather,or dlh/anybody both dlh and pbf are rich beyond measure so they fight for prizemoney and lots of it.cotto brings it no doubt but he marketed incorrectly by arum if he wants mega fights i bet he could find one at 154 no problem.imagine if he fought that scrub mayorga the money that he would make and it would be action from start to end.but then again cotto has just fought beat down fighters gomez, judah, chop, chop corley and he was hurt against him.So wana see cottos fan base take him to nevada against gomez or anybody other than elite fighter and will see how mainstream he is.peace to all the cotto meat huggers
Friday Apr 25, 2008
rudy:  dude....WTF are you talking about? I stand behind comments 1million%, there is just no point in arguing with an ignorant person.
Monday Apr 28, 2008
crystal:  FORBES IS TRYEN TO BE LIKE FLOYD MAYWEATHER JR. HE CANT BE MONEY MAY HE JUST CANT HE DOSENT HAVE THE QUICKNESS MONEY HAS HE JUST WANT TYHE ATTENION.HE WILL NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!! BE LIKE FLOYD MAYWEATHER JR. U CAN BE TRAINED BY ANYBODY LIKE ROGER BUT U WILL NEVER BE LIKE FLOYD MAYWEATHER JR.

Actions Speak So Loudly, Can't Hear What You're Saying
"Here's the problem with Winky, the man has OUTPRICED himself so many times that no one wants to even deal with him any more. Wright believes he's entitled to a fight with Pavlik or Oscar, but come on, a draw with Taylor, and he then refuses to do the rematch, followed by a easy win over Quartey, and then the UGLY fight with B-Hop. No one wants to see him after that. Winky needs to go back to the basics and work his way back to a big fight; sitting on the sidelines crying out for a $ fight ain't the way to do it. Get back in the ring. Actions speak louder than words." ---TSS reader Rudy gives Winky the business
