My Pound for Pound List
By David A. Avila
Dear Oleg and Samuel, I hope you were both watching the fight last Saturday night as Israel Vazquez and Rafael Marquez showed what real prizefighting is supposed to look like.
Please don’t resemble the heavyweight farce exhibited by Wladimir Klitschko and Sultan Ibragimov two weeks ago.
After witnessing one of the greatest fights, greatest three fights for that matter, what comes next?
Marquez and Vazquez left many in the crowd breathless.
Now that we know the winner between the two Pound for Pound fighters it’s time to update a new list. Here we go.
Dropped from the new list are Jermain Taylor and Ricky Hatton, who, though courageous in their bouts, must be scrapped in favor of two others like Miguel Cotto a newcomer to this list after beating Shane Mosley.
A new element has been added to determine the listings. In the past, the rankings were decided solely on wins, losses, fighting skills and quality of opponents. One new consideration will be the excitement and entertainment factor of a boxer. A primary reason for this new element was watching the heavyweight fight between Wladimir Klitschko and Sultan Ibragimov. Their mutual refusal to exchange or take chances proved another factor is needed.
Fans expect and deserve to see great fights from anybody mentioned on this list:
Pound for Pound list
1. Floyd Mayweather (39-0, 25 KOs) – It took a check left hook to keep Floyd Mayweather on this list. If he had proceeded to pot shot Hatton to victory there would have been a new fighter at the top of this list. One other thing about Mayweather is he does not hold. He can stand in front of an opponent and slip, block and counter with the best in the sport.
2. Manny Pacquiao (45-3-2, 35 KOs) – Pacman won by decision against Marco Antonio Barrera but what’s very impressive is he’s one fight away from capturing the trifecta against Mexico’s terrible trio of Barrera, Erik Morales and Juan Manuel Marquez. Pacman is boxing’s most exciting fighter hands down. Just a slip from Mayweather and in goes Pacman to the top spot.
3. Israel Vazquez (43-4, 31 KOs) – El Magnifico powered through near defeat the way real champions do. His remarkable victory reminded me of the late Diego Corrales willing his way to victory in his first fight with Jose Luis Castillo. Israel Vazquez is finally getting his due after years of fighting beneath the notice of boxing fans. He is one of the best today.
4. Kelly Pavlik (33-0, 29 KOs) – His back-to-back performances against former Pound for Pound fighter Jermain Taylor nailed him down as one of the premier prizefighters at any weight division. Few expected Pavlik to win a boxing battle. But for 12 rounds he pounded his way to victory behind a bazooka jab and some belly busting punches. He never stops moving forward. He’s like a Terminator.
5. Bernard Hopkins (48-4-1, 32 KOs) – The Executioner was supposed to retire three years ago but here he is fighting yet another fighter considered one of the best fighters in the world in Joe Calzaghe. Though many fans consider him boring, those who admire his technical proficiency sit in awe as he makes each and every opponent fight at his pace, not their’s. Bernard Hopkins is the Ezzard Charles of our day and a master boxer.
6. Joe Calzaghe (44-0, 32 KOs) – The Welsh fighter has been undefeated forever it seems, but sadly he’s never fought another elite boxer in his entire professional career. Sure he’s battled with some tough and talented fighters, but Hopkins represents the first time Calzaghe steps in the ring against a fighter considered one of the best in the world. Can’t wait.
7. Juan Manuel Marquez (48-3-1, 35 KOs) – Now it’s big Poison’s turn to do what little Poison almost did, beat a fellow Pound for Pound fighter. Marquez has the technical prowess and the mental aptitude to match punches with the hurricane fury of Pacquiao. It’s going to be great on March 15 in Las Vegas. Don’t miss it.
8. Miguel Cotto (31-0, 25 KOs) – Beating Shane Mosley, let alone surviving 12 rounds with the former Pound for Pound fighter, catapults Cotto to the list. I must confess I was one of the doubters but you can’t beat Mosley, Paul Malignaggi and Zab Judah on luck. Those wins proved that aside from being a strong punishing fighter, he’s also one of the more intelligent boxers with his ability change up if something doesn’t work.
9. Juan Diaz (33-0, 17 KOs) – In the beginning when he first captured a lightweight title he was considered the weakest of the titleholders in the 135-pound division. Now he’s considered the best and though he doesn’t punch as hard as the others, his stamina and punch output surpass anybody he’s faced. He has a big test this weekend with Nate Campbell.
10. Rafael Marquez (37-5, 33 KOs) – Rarely will you see a defeated fighter give such a great showing and keep his reputation intact. Little Poison nearly beat Israel Vazquez and proved once again he’s one of the elite fighters in any division. That jab and his combinations are precise and deadly. He’s beaten several elite fighters in his career.
11. Winky Wright (51-4-1, 25 KOs) – Winky is another of those fighters you just can’t beat convincingly. In recent times Wright has become more aggressive and less defensive and he’s done it effectively. Plus, he’s not afraid to fight anyone in the world. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Winky fight a heavyweight.
12. Joan Guzman (28-0, 17 KOs) – Guzman is slick, quick and ready to slip anybody’s combinations with the fluidity of mercury. The Dominican dandy recently turned off a few fans recently in his fight against Mexico’s Humberto Soto, but I’m willing to give him another crack to prove his ability. Next up is Scotland’s Alex Arthur in the glens. It should be interesting.
Honorable mention:
Cristian Mijares, Ricky Hatton, Ivan Calderon, Junior Witter, Jermain Taylor, Shane Mosley, Oscar De La Hoya, and Vernon Forrest.
Fights on television
Fri. ESPN2, 6 p.m., Thomas Mashaba (20-1-4) vs. Cristobal Cruz (35-11-1).
Fri. Telefutura, 8 p.m., Rogers Mtagwa (22-12-2) vs. David Martinez (18-3-1).
Sat. HBO, 6:30 p.m., Oleg Maskaev (34-5) vs. Samuel Peter (29-1); Juan Diaz (38-0) vs. Nate Campbell (31-5-1).
Sat. Showtime, 9 p.m., David Haye (20-1) vs. Enzo Maccarinelli (28-1).

Yes. Good list, plus a wise decision dropping Jermain Taylor and Ricky Hatton from the list because there are other fighters more deserving. Also, it's nice to see my homie Floyd "Money" Mayweather at the top where he should be seeing as he can beat any one of those boxers from welterweight on down. Pacquiao don't want it, neither does Cotto. Ya dig!

David Avila. You have no idea what you're talking about man. Floyd doesn't hit and hold? Do you want a re education? There's a vid on youtube compiling the fouls Fake Floyd did on Hatton. Let's use common sense shall we. WHICH IS MORE WORTHY OF P4P.. A GUY WHO FIGHTS THE NO.3 P4P OR A GUY WHO FIGHTS A BLOWN-UP WELTER? It's an easy answer Avila.

Excellent job, David. I couldn't dispute any of the rankings. It takes a list like this to remind a fan how many fine boxers are at work today. How can this sport stay under the radar with talent like this in business? The MMA roster is a soup kitchen line by comparison. More of the American public should be aware of these amazing boxers. Look at all the hard work, heart, consumate conditioning and supreme skills these athletes possess. Each and every one of these guys should be a household word.

Avila - A criteria you're missing is strength of schedule and/or willingness to fight the best available opposition. Floyd has clearly avoided the elite at 147 and for that, he's a middle of the packer until he redresses the issue. The fact that Floyd is ducking all these guys should be sentence one of his snippet. "Floyd has amassed a fortune and established a crossover appeal into the mainstream, but for him to remain atop the P4P rankings, he must fight one of the elite welterweights, principally Miguel Cotto, although Margarito, Mosley, Cintron, Quintana, Clottey, or Berto will suffice. His best win in years is Carlos Baldomir, an on the cusp top-10 guy. He cannot stay atop this list by beating Oscar, whose last significant win was against Ike Quartey in 1999, and Ricky Hatton, a very good 140-pound fighter but a very average 147-pound fighter. The opposition is out there. Until he avails himself of it, he's no longer at the top."

I'm disappointed that Miguel Cotto came in at 8 and you imply this was almost entirely due to the Moseley fight. The last few people he fought are Carlos Maussa, Ricardo Torres, Quintana, Urkal, Judah, Malinaggi and Mosely..each one was/is a champion..(well; Urkal was not a world champ really, but held some world title belts).
Push him up the list my good sir. He's fought more champs in 3 years that Hopkins / Calzaghe did in their career. It's too early to rate Pavlik above Cotto also..give him time.

Great list except 1 fighter. Why is Calzaghe always in somebody's top 10 P4P? Seriously. I like his fight game and seeing him fight, his punch output and attack is relentless. He fights at a fast pace consistently for 12 rounds. One of the elements to determine the list is quality of opponents. Who has he fought? I can only name 3, Peter Manfredo (a bum who only got his fame from the contender) Jeff Lacy (overrated and the best opponent he fought) Mikkel Kessler (wasn't he on the P4P list last year and who has he fought). These european oversees biuld their record up fighting journeyman. I don't hear anyone question who Calzaghe fought or who he been ducking. He been ducking everyone from middle to light heavy weight. The only person I ever heard him call out is B Hop and he's only fighting him now because feels he has a better chance in B Hop's old age. B Hop is going to give Calzaghe the business. True story

Just because soccer moms recognize Floyd and he's made a ton of jack doesn't make him the P4P best. I would think a respected boxing scribe would know that. It shocks me that you regard Floyd so highly despite years of non-opposition. How can you not take that into account? Moreover, you allude positively to Pac's Mexican trifecta, which implicitly means you respect strength of schedule and a willingness to fight the best. Why is Floyd exempt?

I like the list David. My sentiments exactly especially in the cases of PBF, but donputo is right about Cotto needing to be in the top 5. You said it yourself, he made Shane look OK instead of great. Cuz, that takes talent.

That's one of the worst P4p list I've ever seen, not having Miguel Cotto on the top five is a sin. BHOP on that list is just ridiculous and Israel Vaquez now that's just dumb.

Unbelieveable that you could have Kelly Pavlik ahead of Bernard Hopkins (and Joe Calzaghe for that matter). How can a master of the 'sweet science' be misrepresented by someone who writes for The Sweet Science? Who the hell has Kelly Pavlik beaten? Jermain Taylor? He damn near got stopped himself the first time, and fought Taylor to a competitive decision (one that most observers had damn near even). Pound for pound should be predicated on the most complete skill set, bolstered with a dominating record and resume. Kelly Pavlik does NOT have the complete skill set - his defense is lacking (and if it wasn't, he would never eat canvas as much as he does), and his resume is not quite the likes of other HOF'ers that are still kicking a$$ and taking names.

The first two on the list are right on point but what is Calzhage doing on top of Marquez? Who did he beat to deserve that spot? He has fought 40 something fights and hes is finally going to get a good challenge.Too little too late , maybe if he beat Kelly and Bernard I'd get him at no.3 . Jorge Arce is a better fighter than Diaz right now.

What it is?:

I tend to disagree with this list on three counts. Money May should not be on top as the only recognizable fight was the one with Hatton and the latter was too small for FM. The other “fight” with ODLH was just an money-makeing exhibition lured to the TRUCK DRIVER mentality ones who bought it. Thirdly, Hopkins should not even be on this list which includes Pacquiao, Marquez, Vazquez, Cotto; as these are true warriors that have lots of cojones as opposed to Hopkins who clinches all the time and his tricks make him “win’ fights.

Why is everybody hating on BHOP? # 5 is good for him, I'll put him at # 3 except that he only been fighting like once a year lately. He beat EVERYBODY, I don't fell like naming names. Champ for 10 years, 20 title defenses. And he was robbed in his Taylor fights. After he lump up Calzaghe he need to get it on with Roy and avenge his only true defeat than retire as one of the best middlweights or p4p best ever.

Actions Speak So Loudly, Can't Hear What You're Saying
"Here's the problem with Winky, the man has OUTPRICED himself so many times that no one wants to even deal with him any more. Wright believes he's entitled to a fight with Pavlik or Oscar, but come on, a draw with Taylor, and he then refuses to do the rematch, followed by a easy win over Quartey, and then the UGLY fight with B-Hop. No one wants to see him after that. Winky needs to go back to the basics and work his way back to a big fight; sitting on the sidelines crying out for a $ fight ain't the way to do it. Get back in the ring. Actions speak louder than words."
