It's True. Mayweather Wants WWE Belt Too.

By David A. Avila

LOS ANGELES-In a surreal setting with various pro wrestlers both male and female sitting in the background, boxing’s Pound for Pound champion Floyd Mayweather stepped on a chair and slipped right into the mood for his next venture: pro wrestling.

“I run the show,” shouted Mayweather in front of more than 200 shouting pro wrestling fans inside the Staples Center walkway where the WWE press conference was held on Monday. “I’m going to take over L.A. This is my city now.”

Wearing a New York Yankee baseball cap and jacket, Mayweather felt right at home among the colorful pro wrestlers despite a number of times being interrupted by fans shouting “De La Hoya, De La Hoya.”

Mayweather quickly silenced those unified shouts by pulling out two wads of bills numbering more than $5,000. He walked around looking at the crowd and tossed some at one end of the fans standing behind a barricade. When some people persisted in shouting De La Hoya’s name he pulled out another wad of money and asked “who wants this?” and walked around again.

“Who’s the champion?” he shouted to the fans, who replied: “You are.”

Another rain of bills fell on the fans that scrambled to pick up whatever they could grasp.

The welterweight world champion of boxing signed a contract with World Wrestling Entertainment exceeding $10 million.

Once again Mayweather is sliding into another form of entertainment.

“First there was the Dancing with the Stars,” said Leonard Ellerbee, who advises Mayweather. “I worked for eight months to get that.”

Now the boxing world champion is slipping into the world of professional wrestling.

“Anytime you can get a world champion of any sport to come to another form of entertainment it’s a coup,” said Vince McMahon, the president of WWE. “We’ve had other boxers cross over like Muhammad Ali, and we even had Evander Holyfield help promote a show.”

With Mayweather poised to fight Oscar De La Hoya in a rematch this September 2008, the danger of an injury postponing the fight that could make each more than $20 million or more is a real threat.

“It’s a big risk you know, but that’s just life,” said Mayweather who is aware of the many injuries pro wrestlers suffer attempting various stunts. “They (WWE) let you do what you want to do.”

The whole affair started last week on Feb. 17 when Mayweather took his sons to watch the WWE show in Las Vegas. He was a guest of Mysterio and sat near the ring. While there he was introduced and exchanged words with seven-feet tall wrestler Paul Wight otherwise known as “the Big Show.” After a few more exchanges Mayweather fired some blows on Wight. A challenge was made and Mayweather accepted.

“Did you see his black eye,” asked Mayweather. “I did that to him.”

During the press conference Big Show tossed down the microphone platform from the dais and proceeded to stare down Mayweather. The boxer jumped on top of a chair to be able to stare Wight eyeball to eyeball.

There were no smiles.

But after the press conference, behind a black curtain, Mayweather was smiling incessantly and eager to speak about his newest venture.

“I’m a showman,” Mayweather said. “Anywhere I go I make em crazy.”

The look on the pro wrestlers faces was somewhat amusing. It was kind of mild shock to the professional wrestlers who probably thought Mayweather would not be able to taunt and boast at their level.

He exceeded their level plus more.

“I’m not going to stop until I get the championship belt,” said Mayweather. “I’m staying here until I become the WWE champ.”

Mayweather, 31, will face 400-pound “the Big Show”, at the Florida Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Florida on Sunday March 30. The fight card called Wrestlemania XXIV will be televised on pay-per-view.

“We want to expand our market visibility,” said Ellerbee.

Mayweather calmly nodded his head.

“I’m a risk taker. I wanted to dip into different fields and different avenues, that’s what I love to do,” Mayweather said. “What better place to do it than WWE?”

Radam G:  Money May is just playing around. He doing what Muhammad Ali did back in the day. Mayweather is just building up interest himself. But come May 3, Forbes will have something to say about Oscar De la Hoya boxing Money May in September. This May-3 bout is scaring me. It's feeling like when Kenny Norton upset Ali -- even breaking and busting up Ali's jaw and face in 1973. I hate to be sitting in a ringside seat in Los Angeles and 35 years later Forbes pulls a Kenny Norton on De la Hoya. I got a bad feeling about the De la Hoya-Forbes bout. I think that Oscar should pull out of the bout with Forbes. It is not worth risking the money that is coming in September. Holla!

Eastar:  I like Floyd in the WWE. It's good promotion for him, and exposure for the sport of boxing. I'm not a wrestling fan but I was when "The Rock" was still fighting. To Radam : Theres no way in hell Oscar will lose to a former jr lightweight.

donputo69:  what a fool..nuff said..

Cotto's #1 Fan:  You Mayweather fans need to be more worried about your buddy fooling around outside of boxing, rather than being worried about Oscar's next fight. I'm very impress that Mayweather does all these things and still pulls it out in the ring, yes. but he better not fool around when he fight's Cotto. either way Cotto will win.

Nic:  i like this move by money. it is exactly things like that that will be able to bring boxing interest back to network tv. if he is able to woo the fans of the WWE, it will do a lot for boxing in general. i hate it when people knock him for doing things like this and dancing with the stars. he is only trying to help the populatiry of boxing.
Tuesday Feb 26, 2008
Jonald:  What an embarrassment. I wish Mayweather would fight ANYONE legitimate at this point. A top 10 guy, Joshua Clottey. A top 15 guy, Andre Berto. Even an ESPN Contender retread. ANYONE! Not even the elite. I won't even mention 147's elite guys. As for Forbes - De La Hoya, I PRAY that SF's comes into this thing with life and death on his mind. I hope he wins and derails that September rematch. But guess what, if Forbes beat De La Hoya, then we'd get Mayweather - Forbes! It's always a lose lose situation for the fans with Floyd. In any event, I think he's much better suited for the WWE.
Tuesday Feb 26, 2008
lance:  who cares about mayweather...it's clear to anyone who's looking that he's afraid to fight any real peops...147 is loaded and scareweather doesn't even count...just my .02.
Tuesday Feb 26, 2008
Saul:  Mayweather should be ashamed of himself for doing this. This is NOT good exposure for the sport of boxing, hes just making a fool out of himself and our sport. This dude is so full of himself. The worst thing is that wrestling is so fake, they will make it to where he will be the heavyweight champ in WWE. Never again am I buying a Mayweather PPV, no matter who hes fighting or whos on the undercard.
Tuesday Feb 26, 2008
Bork:  I think De La Hoya - Mayweather is a decent fight. I thought Oscar won the fight and one of the judges thought so too. A good schedule for "Money May" would be Oscar in September, maybe Ricardo Mayorga in May 2009 (ideally Cinco de Mayo), Pacquiao in December 2009, then maybe a tune-up type fight with Arturo Gatti, provided he's back in the ring, in June 2010, and then Joel Casamayor or maybe Jose Luis Castillo in 2011, and then the sunset for the best fighter to EVER lace them up.
Tuesday Feb 26, 2008
LARRY:  It's a sad state of affairs when you have to be concerned about Steve Forbes...My God if you live long enough you'll see and hear it all. Worried about Steve Forbes. Worried about Steve Forbes! The guy lost to Grady Brewer and is a FEATHERWEIGHT!!!!! Is that the risk that our fighters are willing to take these days?!?! De La Hoya and Steve Forbes! My God boxing has hit rock bottom.
Tuesday Feb 26, 2008
Kool-Aid:  Bork, what the hell are you talking about? You must've missed the 1st time Floyd fought Gatti...or maybe you've missed how Floyd won't fight someone remotely dangerous like Pac-Man...no one would by Casamayor and he's already fought Castillo TWICE. Floyd is the 48th best fighter in history right now. Now, I can't blame him for taking $20M to fake wrestle...but after that. OK. Fight the human ATM machine De La Hoya once more. But after that, it's about legacy. Mosley...Cotto...they're both waiting for you if you're man enough to fight them.
Tuesday Feb 26, 2008
oumboy:  Bork, are u serious? Ricardo Mayorga 5/09, Pacquiao, and here's the funny part Arturo Gatti which he already destroyed. Man whatever happened to Cotto, Shane Mosley, even Vernon Forrest if he wants to dabble at 154.
Tuesday Feb 26, 2008
Eastar:  I like Floyd but Oscar beat Floyd the first fight. As for Ken Norton and Ali :Ken Norton is a Hall of fame fighter. Tyson and Douglas: Tyson was the Zab Judah of the heavywights, no focus. Quintana and Williams: were two equally matched opponents, and the better fighter prevailed. As for De La Hoya Forbes I only got one question - Any body putting their money on Forbes winning this fight? HELL no!! so shut the HELL up!
Tuesday Feb 26, 2008
Guy:  Kool-Aid, you took the words out of my mouth: "Bork, what the hell are you talking about?" Anyway, I don't blame Floyd for taking $20M for some silly wrestling, BUT, I don't want to hear him talk about being the best boxer ever if he's not willing to prove it in the ring. As mentioned above, there are plenty of fighters at 147 to prove his mettle against, and an old DeLaHoya isn't one of them (been there, done that). Let me see PBF fight Cotto, Mosley, Cintron-Margarito winner, Quintana, Williams, Clottey, even Berto.
Tuesday Feb 26, 2008
Salt lover:  Cotto's #1 Fan, he's ready and able to beat DLH any time that he wants to. This fight's not who's the better boxer anymore, but who's the better trainer (Roger-Floyd Sr.) cuz we all already know Floyd's better than De la Hoya. Besides Floyd was Dancing With The Stars and look how fantastic he performed against Ricky Hatton. He's the type of fighter who can fool around whenever he wants to and still get the job done. I'd rather worry about Cotto getting upset by Gomez, if I were you, cuz one blow and that's it for your guy. Peace y'all.
Tuesday Feb 26, 2008
original Sugar fan:  The only chance of Floyd ever getting hurt in the ring is if "The Big Show" trips and falls on him. What sweet irony that would be! Why is the world's greatest living boxer stepping into the ring with that huge and useless hunk of human flesh? How about Floyd vs. Alien, Predator and Jason next? Just have some CGI guys green screen and digitize the whole thing. Create a virtual FX Floyd, so the real one can always stay home and just count money. Floyd is a shameless buck-hound at this point. Obviously, Vince McMahon's money is worth more to him than his boxing legacy. Hey, I understand a guy wanting to make money. And I'll admit I'm jealous. But PBF shouldn't carry the belts if he won't fight the best. Step up or step down, Floyd. PBF and DLH are the only ones who'll benefit from their rematch. But Floyd will not retire until he explores every media and monetary possibility. He's going to be an American Idol judge next, followed by stints as Austin Powers next foe and Shrek's new jack-ass side-kick.

Radam G:  Keep drinking that haterrade and eating those player-hater chips. How many great boxers have flirted with the wrestling game -- or as they call it -- rasslin'? Check it out, yourself. I'm tired of researching for hotheaded critics. Money May is making that money and becoming the most known face on the planet, as Ali and Foreman did. All I will say is that Money May kicks mucho butt. Holla! Just wait for Pinoy Time -- PacMan Pacquiao in six. All my pinoys and pinay, Sagawin ako sa sa-loob sa San Francisco sa Myerkulis kasi Araw Kay Pacquiao (Manny Pacquiao Day) lamang!
Tuesday Feb 26, 2008
Yantos:  Mayweather versus Mayorga is a great event. I think the classy Nicaraguan can pull that off and stake his claim amongst the all time greats! That is a meaningful fight that I think we'd all love to see!
Tuesday Feb 26, 2008
Smiley C:  Yea, Kenny Norton was so great that he is the only hall of famer boxer in history to never win a world title belt in the ring. In the three shots; He got knocked out in the second round by George Foreman. He got robbed in a 15 rounder with Muhammad Ali. And then the corrupted WBC gave him its title because Spinks fought Ali in a rematch. Norton defended his paper title against Larry Holmes and lost. For Real! I got your back, Radam! I got the east star when south. Pinoy Time!
Tuesday Feb 26, 2008
Jonald:  "Radam G" and "Smiley C" are so obviously the same people so as to insult the readership of TSS. I wish I could live in your world of disillusion. It must be nice. You worry so deeply about Oscar being beaten by Steve Forbes, a fiftieth tier featherweight, in order to keep the September bogus show alive. It's people like you that hurt the sport.
Tuesday Feb 26, 2008
Smiley C:  What? Jonald, you remind of the back of a donkey. Radam is my peep Fo' sur,' but he ain't me. Do u see me on the NOTE OF QUOTE. My homie has so mad skills, and u r just a jealous player-hate-dude -- a straight-up PhD. See ya! I would wanna be ya!
Tuesday Feb 26, 2008
Smiley C:  Just in case, you don't catch it, Jonald. "I would wanna be ya" was sarcasm. You seem to be challenged above the shoulders. Fo' sure! Yr wits r like something that starts with a s.
Tuesday Feb 26, 2008
Radam G.:  You never know what Jonald is going to come up with next. I think that pressure and stress are getting to him. He is imagining insults to "readership of TSS." Smiley, next he will say that we are twins. Or, just maybe, he will find another person, and accuse of us of being the boxing Weaver Triplets -- brothers of former world heavyweight champion Mike Weaver. Holla!
Tuesday Feb 26, 2008
joey:  FIRST THING, PBF SUX . HE IS MAKING A FOOL OF HIMSELF BY GOING AND JOINING THE WWE. SECOND HE IS SCARED TO FIGHT ANYONE YOUNGER,LIKE COTTO, AND THIRD DLH DID WIN THERE FIRST FIGHT, AND IF ANYONE RESPONE TO MY POSTING , THATS JUST TELL ME THAT I GOT TO YOU. OH BY THE WAY, WHO IN THE HELL IS STEVE FORBES. GO OSCAR
Wednesday Feb 27, 2008
Jonald:  Radam G/Smiley C - Stick to the WWE, that's more in line with your mentality and inteligence.
Wednesday Feb 27, 2008
Elray:  joey, I'm going to respond because you're right on the money. De La Hoya did beat Mayweather in their first fight. Nuff said.
Wednesday Feb 27, 2008
Curt:  He's got the mouth for wrestling but I don't think Mayweather would stick around long enough to be WWE Champion. It would take him 10 years just to make $20 million dollars again on wrestling, not to mention traveling 300 days out of the year.
Wednesday Feb 27, 2008
jlt:  floyd isn't tarnishing his legacy at all. he's expanding his horizons in ways that Ali, Tyson, and even holyfield did. as for big show not being able to hurt floyd I'd say he could. shows fist is the size of his head. not to mention the 7 ft 400 lb giant is a trained boxer so he may be more dangerous than previously thought.
Wednesday Feb 27, 2008
BIGG:  Get, arum to put up 20 million dollars, for the cotto fights, Money has kids, they wont have to worry, about their futures. Why would anybody want to stop someone from making money and not get hurt, jealous or hating,
Wednesday Feb 27, 2008
erskine:  big show is going to fight you at wrestlemania 24 . you are taking a big risk at 20 million dollars and wat happen on raw he beat u to a living hell .and he says thats not compared to what he going to do at wm24 like wat he did to jamie noble friday night but is u going to beat him or a repeat from last monday.

Old, But Not In The Way
"I did some researching. Hopkins is the oldest light heavy -- at 41 -- to ever win a respected sanctioning organization title belt. However, his hero, the late great, Archie "The Old Mongoose" Moore would have him beat, if Archie didn't lie about his age so much. Archie's boxing age when he won won his belt was 36. He official age -- listed on his passport -- was 39. But his actual age was 43, according to his mother, in 1953, and his aunt -- at the time 100 years old -- in 1991. I spoke to Archie in 1995 in San Diego, Ca., and he confirmed 43. I asked him why did he lie about his age, and he said age was held against a fighter more than color." ---TSS reader/citizen-journalist Radam likens Hopkins to Ole Archie
