MoneyPallooza: Mayweather Gives Back
By Michael Woods
Most of the time, I put press releases in the blog section. But this one came in, and I figured I'd give it a more prominent place on the site.
Often, we dissect and examine our heroes and notorious public figures with a microscopic fervor.
Sometimes, their good deeds fall in between the cracks, because media tends to focus excessively on the negative. So, consider this an effort towards rectifying that inclination.
GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, February 8, 2008… Beginning today, Friday, February 8th, boxing champion Floyd Mayweather will host "Money Mayweather Celebrity Weekend". Celebrities participating in the various weekend events will be: Bow Wow, 50 Cent, Lloyd, Jadakiss, Souljah Boy, Spindrella, Christina Milian, Keyshia Cole, B2K, Chili of TLC, Shop Boyz, Kid Capri, Swizz Boys and StylzP.
The "Money Mayweather Celebrity Weekend" events will include: "King of the Ring Freestyle Battle"—local rappers go head to head for a chance at $10,000; "Money Mayweather Celebrity Basketball Game"; Kid Capri's Birthday Bash and Celebrity Basketball Game After Party; and a Comedy Show Starring Cedric the Entertainer. These events will benefit The Floyd Mayweather Jr. Foundation (FMJF).
"Giving back to Grand Rapids is something that I am so proud to do, and with this event I am bringing the best of the best to my hometown," said Mayweather. "This weekend is all about giving back to this community and some of the biggest celebrities out there have come here to join me for a great cause."
Previously, FMJF has organized large scale food drives, education giveaways for students in need of school supplies and a Toys for Tots collection, but "Money Mayweather Celebrity Weekend" is the largest event to date for FMJF. Established on July 3, 2007, FMJF's mission is to empower and encourage community alliances, impact youth leadership and strengthen family foundations through construction, entrepreneurialism and education resulting in healthier communities. FMJF focuses on four categories of giving: youth and education, housing and community building, health and wellness, and economic growth and development.
SPEEDBAG New team-member is coming to TSS next week, so keep eyes peeled. He's a fightwrite heavyweight. Figuratively, not literally. He's actually slim, unlike most of us keyboard tappers...

Floyd's got a big heart and he's so intellgent. People knock him for fighting safe, but why shouldn't he? If he's got the moves, why should he stand still and let lesser men pound on him? He is a true pound for pound great. I want to see him retire undefeated and healthy and spend lots of time with his kids and grandkids. Let's have props all around for Floyd Mayweather.

Question for TSS readers: Cotto, Williams or Margarito? Which matchup with PBF would be the best test and which is the most likely to happen? It if all comes down to a payday, I don't blame Floyd. It's all about getting beaten up and why do it for peanuts?

Great piece, Editor Mike. That is a funny shot about "keyboard tappers." But just remember, the hands of a keyboard tapper is superior to the hands of a combatant. The hands of a combatant can beat up a few at one time in close quarters. The words of a keyboard tapper can touch the thinking of billions around the globe at long range and for a long time. Money May is the best. Like a lot of good humans, he's full of contradictions. He gives money in kindness, at the right time. And he gives pain in the ring all the time. Indeed, he is P4P in giving -- money or pain. Holla!

Floyd is the best welterweight since Sugar Ray Leonard. And like the great Leonard, Floyd is very charitable, and conscious public perception. He knows that what he can do, he must do to give back to the community. Also coming from a broken home, and maybe having it a little more rough growing up than a lot of other people, he understands the difference a celebrity can make in a persons life, either young or old. Success has'nt gone to his head. Keep doing ya thang "Money May".

Answer to Robert Curtis: Non of them would be a test for PBF. PBF past all of his test and beat all the best fighters of HIS time- Corrales, Costillo, Gotti, De La hoya, Judah ect. Which fight is most likely to happen? The Cotto fight, if Cotto can arise from the underground and becaome a marketable fighter - then, he too can get his spanking...It's been awhile since I've seen Cotto getting off the canvas, I kind of miss it (lol).

I totally agree you with you Eastar. Floyd was the real one who should of been called Sugar. He's the Sugar boxer in this era, after Ray Robinson, and Ray Leonard. The guy simply's out of this World. Right now, I can't see who's able to defeat him. He's nothing normal, and he has a talent to predict his opponent's instant moves like he owns the moment. Tremendous talent, aside from his unmatched handspeed, and invisible, almost perfect defense. That's a talent nobody works. It's just something to be born with, and right now, that I can see, Jones jr is the only one who can match up his own game to Floyd's. Congratulations for Floyd, cuz he's definitely a champion in and out of the ring. Good luck and best of success Floyd!!!

"It Takes A Special Man"
"It takes a special man to lace them on and step into a ring to either hurt or be hurt. It's always been my opinion that the greatest fighters (not necessarily the most commercially successful) are probably born with that never give up until I'm completely done attitude. It can be nurtured over time, but you either have it or you don't. When adversity hits, and it will, this instinct will allow you to reach inside for additional strength and determination. Ali, Louis, Gatti, Corrales had it....Marquez and Pacquiao have it. De La Hoya, for all the great things he did as a boxer never had it, Tyson didn't have It, Cotto doesn't have it, and as much as I hate to admit it because I loved to watch him fight, Chavez didn't have it. 99.9% of us don't have it either. That's why we're not all fighters and we can sit here and judge these courageous men from the comfort of our computers."
