Tarver

Monday Jan 28, 2008

Tarver is in tough, as is Johnson on April 12. Debate rages if Cotto is, and Cintron/Margarito II is a guaranteed doozy.

Dueling Date: HBO, Sho Square Off 4/12

By Michael Woods

Good news, fight fans. There will be a bounty of goodies to choose from on April 12th. Bad news, fight fans. You better be equipped with a TiVo if you want to catch it all in a timely fashion.

IBF light heavyweight champion Clinton Woods will defend his title against IBO titleholder and former undisputed 175-pound kingpin Antonio Tarver at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa, Fla., while WBC world title holder Chad Dawson will face off with former world champ Glen Johnson.

The card, promoted by Gary Shaw, kicks off at 9PM Eastern.

"Thanks to Showtime and Dennis Hobson, we have created a very special night for boxing fans and an important event for the light heavyweight division," said Shaw.  "Four world class fighters are taking the risk to reap the reward in a best against best scenario.  Dawson, Tarver, Woods and Johnson are in the fights of their lives and I'm proud to be promoting them."

“I'm thrilled that we were able to put this fight together and add it to what was already a sensational fight card April 12 on Showtime.” said Ken Hershman, Showtime's boxing chief. “These two match-ups are not only world title fights, but have significant career implications for all four fighters. I give them and their promoters a tremendous amount of credit for agreeing to take these fights. Saturday, April 12 should be a spectacular night for Showtime subscribers."

Also, over on HBO, Miguel Cotto will glove up for the first time in 2008 on April 12, against Contender alumnus Alfonso Gomez, and Kermit Cintron looks to avenge his 2005 stoppage loss to Antonio Margarito on the chief support bout in Atlantic City. The show will be televised on "free" HBO.

Woods (41-3-1, 24 KOs), of Sheffield, England, will be making the fifth defense of the crown he won with a fifth-round TKO over Rico Hoye on March 4, 2005. It will be Woods' second start in the United States and his Showtime debut; Tarver (26-4, 19 KOs), of Tampa, will be appearing on Showtime for a third consecutive time. A southpaw who owns two victories over Roy Jones Jr., registered a fourth-round TKO over Danny Santiago on Dec. 1, 2007, on Showtime.

Dawson (25-0, 17 KOs), of New Haven, Conn., - a ShoBox alum - will be defending his WBC belt for a third time since winning it on Feb. 3, 2007.  In his last outing, he registered a fourth-round TKO over Epifanio Mendoza on Sept. 29, 2007.

Johnson (47-11-2, 37 KOs), of Miami, by way of Jamaica, is seeking his fourth consecutive victory. The former IBF light heavyweight champ has fought the best in his division throughout his career including title defense victories over Jones Jr. and Tarver.

I cannot recall the last time dueling doubleheaders of this quality were offered on the same evening. As always, in such a case, I finish with the most logical sign off: thank God for TiVo.

Perry Russo:  The HBO card is top-notch. I'll be watching that and then I'll watch the Dawson - Johnson fight on tape. I do not watch Antonio Tarver. That's not Woods' fault; Tarver just bores me to tears.

Eastar:  Dam. I stopped watching Show Time a long time ago so my subsciption is cancelled. Migeul Cotto's fight has no value so I would have preferred Chad versus Glenn over the Cotto Match. oh well, I at least get to watch Margarito Beat up Cintron again.
Monday Jan 28, 2008 01:14:14 PM
Spinach Chin:  Showtime card hands down.
Monday Jan 28, 2008 01:20:20 PM
BIGFREDO76:  Good problem to have if your a true boxing fan.Wish this problem would come up more often but i will tape the cotto fight not worth seeing a tune-up fight.I will watch the Kermit fight because i believe he will rise faster and better than puppet boy cotto.
Monday Jan 28, 2008 01:46:30 PM
donputo69:  well..i'll be watching the true boxing network HBO..gotta watch my boriqua fighters doing their thing on april..cotto via devestating ko..and cintron getting his revenge by unanimous decision..wouldn't be surprise if he stops margarito..praaaaaa praaaaaaa..
Monday Jan 28, 2008 02:40:20 PM
CHI-IL49:  I will be watching HBO for sure, the Cotto fight will be very interesting but i feel that Cotto will do enough to take the decision. As for the Margarito fight, he will unleash his fury on little Kermit (dafrog) Cintron and will make him cry once more. Why in the heck was he even crying after his loss, he's a grown as man! Good fight night ut HBO gets my vote.
Monday Jan 28, 2008 03:51:33 PM
rudy:  Watch HBO live, DVR Showtime and watch it after HBO's bouts are over. Don your 50% right, Cotto punishes Gomez but Margarito will pound Cintron's face in and send him back to amateurs -- nothing new from Cintron, same old fighter-different day -- Margarito easy 3rd KO (2rds less than the previous 5rd KO beat down
Monday Jan 28, 2008 04:42:43 PM
Santhonio:  HBO all the way. Tarver is a bust.
Monday Jan 28, 2008 05:03:12 PM
charlo:  def watching HBO. why is Cotto fighting this guy, Cottos gonna kill em!!! Cintron is gonna shake up Margarito, i never liked that guy, overrated.
Monday Jan 28, 2008 05:19:30 PM
Dan L:  HD-DVR is my ally again! Like some have said - I wanna see Cintron get revenge on Margarito and Chad vs. Glenn. Tarver is so dull to watch and Cotto should get the easy win. Maybe Chad vs. Clinton in the fall?
Monday Jan 28, 2008 05:45:09 PM
donputo69:  I think the first Cintron-Margarito fight was a fluke.. Rematch-Cintron wins but it wont as easy as some of you think. Margarito can take a punch and is a late rounds fighter.. But Cintrons better technique and punching power will be the difference..
Monday Jan 28, 2008 05:54:53 PM
Guy:  I'm gonna watch them all that night, like Rudy. It seems boxing's demise was greatly exaggerated. 2007 was a great year for the Sweet Science and 2008 is shaping up quite nicely. These are the kind of matchups boxing needs, top ten fighters fighting each other (well Gomez is a recognizable name if not quite top 10). I'll pick Cotto by KO in an entertaining scrap. Margarito beats Cintron again by late KO. Dawson should be too fresh and fast for Glencoffe, although Bad Chad better not look past him. Woods and Tarver, hopefully, Woods because I'm done with Tarver and his overinflated value of himself.
Monday Jan 28, 2008 08:31:52 PM
donputo69:  hey rudy?..i respect your opinion..nuff said..but deep inside my corazon i truly believe cintron has a big chance of knocking out margarito..thats just my opinion..stay up homie!!
Monday Jan 28, 2008 09:32:08 PM
rudy:  4sho Don, we'll see in April -- just dont see any major improvements in Cintron that would deliver a different outcome from the 1st bout. Anyway -- been reading that the HBO double header is actually on the 26th of April and not the 12th.....

btk:  Gomez is underrated. I think he'll give Cotto a good stern test and lose valiantly. In fact, I think Gomez gives Cotto a better fight than most welterweights. His losses were to bigger men and he has a hell of a beard at 147.
Tuesday Jan 29, 2008 11:06:00 AM
Radam G:  Cotto should stop Gomez in three or four. Cintron will do a job on Margarito. The bout may go eight, but don't be surprise if Cintron get him out in two or three. Margarito is one of the most overrated fighter in a long time. This guy swings like a washer woman, and he is slower than sand in an hour glass.
Tuesday Jan 29, 2008 12:34:32 PM
Anonymous user:  Uh-oh. Sixth paragraph says Cotto's fight will be against Gomez in 2007. Better check the calendar. The time passes me by as well, but not by a year.
Tuesday Jan 29, 2008 12:35:18 PM
Eastar:  I just want to see Tarver get a whoopin! Chad Dawson better step up to the plate.
Tuesday Jan 29, 2008 02:38:02 PM
rbk:  Even though Gomez is a bum who doesn't deserve this shot I'd much prefer seeing Cotto anytime he fights. And I'm with rudy, Margarito with another KO over Cintron. Bring on Cotto vs. Margarito.
Tuesday Jan 29, 2008 03:57:44 PM
Radam G:  Hisham Rahman Jr is probably one of the next best future American Heavyweight. This guy is a pretty, good amateur boxer at 15 years old. If he grews his father's heart and turn pro, he will be a-cannot-miss prospect. The kid is pretty sharp, right now.

jt:  hbo for sure. tarver sucks, and even against mediocre comp cotto entertains. i think hbo puts on a better show anyway.
Tuesday Jan 29, 2008 11:06:59 PM
Yuvie:  Well, I'm in the UK so I'll be watching them both taped a week later.
Thursday Jan 31, 2008 02:37:53 PM
SIN:  Th Cotto Card is way better than tarver no offense to the rest of the fighters but I have never liked tarver
Thursday Jan 31, 2008 03:18:11 PM
NO MORE Tarver:  Tarver epitomizes boredom. ENNUI. I wish he'd just retire and go away.

2009 Reader Of The Year Weighs In On Legacies Of Pacquiao And Mayweather
"Pacquiao has proven....in the ring... time and time again that he is the greatest of this time. He has earned his respect. He begs for nothing. He is a man content with his growth, his family and his achievements. A man the world has now turned it's eyes to behold. Floyd Mayweather is not even close in stature. He may possess the greatest skills but he is not the Face of Boxing today. Google Manny Pacquiao. There are 20 million searches. Google Floyd. There are 6.5 million. Look at the NYTimes, the Wall Street Journal and Time. Count how many words were used these past years to mention Floyd Mayweather. Then count the words still being printed about Manny. And keep counting. As I've said many times, Floyd has been too clever by half. He has short changed his public.....and has out-smarted himself. Manny will fight but a few more times. Enjoy it while you can. He is an all time great pugilist. Floyd, with all of his remarkable skills lack the will to be truly great in the biggest sense of the word. His legacy will look more like Holmes that Ali. He has earned it." ---November is half-way gone, but we don't need to keep counting ballots. It's a landslide. Fe'Roz has won the 2009 Reader of the Year award. His comments add to the website immeasurably, and he epitomizes the thoughtful, respectful, educated fan of pugilism we strive to cater to at TSS. Congrats, Fe'Roz, and please accept my thanks for being the valued member of this community that you are. Sincerely, Editor Mike
