Cotto To Meet Contender Gomez
By Michael Woods
The cat was out of the bag, thanks to boxrec.com, so Bob Arum has confirmed a poorly kept secret: Miguel Cotto will take on Contender alumnus Alfonso Gomez on April 12 in Atlantic City.
Arum confirmed the Cotto date to Dan Rafael, and while some Ts need crossing, according to Top Rank spokesman Lee Samuels, this deal will get done.
Cotto may draw from heat from netfans who demand he fight only megafights and mega-names, but I have a gut feeling this fight will be a doozy.
Gomez is a man of destiny, I do believe, and while I think he is in a different skill class than Cotto, who at times outboxed master boxer Shane Mosley in November, he will believe in his heart that he can knock Cotto off his 31-0 perch.
Gomez, age 27, is a Mexican born California resident who sent Arturo Gatti to the golf course in July 2007, and took a UD10 from Ben Tackie in October in his last outing.
His record stands at 18-3, with losses coming to Peter Manfredo, Jesse Feliciano and Ishe Smith.
Cotto, age 27, did crave a megafight, and Arum worked hard to land him Mayweather or De La Hoya, so he can't be faulted for taking a "stay busy" fight.
AND: Kermit Cintron (29-1) will get a chance to rectify when he meets up with again with Antonio Margarito. Cintron got stopped in the fifth round of their 2005 encounter, but has since rebuilt his standing by hooking up with Manny Steward. Anyone not enthused with the choice of Gomez for Cotto should be cheered up by this pairing. Cintron, age 28, has won five straight since Margarito schooled him, and he holds the IBF 147 pound crown. The 29-year-old Margarito steamrolled Golden Johnson in a statement fight in November after losing a decision to longarm Paul Williams in July 2007.

I'm definitely in the Woods about this one. For the life of me, I don't see the angle of this bout. Why is highly elite Miguel Cotto giving Alfonso Gomez a shot? I'm reminded of Apollo Creed giving Rocky Balboa a shot on the Big Screen. Gomez, like Rocky, is not even worthy of an opportunity. I'm perplexed! Now the reality of the hurt business has gone Hollywood(ing) imagination. Shame on Cotto -- in advance -- for this scorching and torturing he should (and will) do on this pretender -- I mean imaginery (TV reality) contender. No Holla! -- just a WHA' da' HECK!

Margarito is beginning to believe the hype about himself. He lucked out of a bout with Super Zab Judah because of promotional problems. Now he has turned around, and made a big mistake -- signing a rematch bout with an angry Kermit Cintron. The Cintron he fought years ago will not be the once that is going to destroy him. The great Manny Steward will make the difference. He has Cintron believing in himself and knowing that Margarito is just a good B-minus fighter. I'm predicting that Cintron will finish off the wild, wide-swinging Margarito in about eight rounds. But I would not be surprise to see him brutally knock out Margarito in two or three rounds.

HEY Traga69 why u livin in the past?arent you saying why we livin in the past?Damn son u sound confused u argue one point but then use it in another.Anyways your IQ is not up there, now u are arguing politics. So cotto is the victim of politics? He is the victim of an inept promoter that doesnt make things happen for him.Boxers tell promoters what to do.Hey son i agree to 1 thing with you Kermit has bright future and big nuts, fought a scrub the whole fight with major ligament damage and still put it down.I bet anyone anything he fights mayweather b4 cotto does

There was a time when boxers paid their dues to earn a shot at the top dogs. Now, they just get in a reality show, a couple of magazines print some overrated articles about some chumps, and BAM (no, I'm not Emeril), you have Joe Calzaghe vs. Peter Manfredo, and now Cotto vs. Gomez. See you later guys, I'm gonna try out for the next contender series, win it, and by jesus birthdate, I'll be fighting the winner of Pavlik-Taylor. Wish me luck.

HEY yo BIGG its not cottos fault its his promoter. The boxer in this case does what the promoter wants. What do you think about that?I can already hear the excuses at DLH is fighting a nobody, cotto's promoter caleed out mayweather, blah, blah, blah.THE bottom line is this cotto TELL your promoter you will NOT fight until he gives you household name a fighter like williams, margarito, cintron.Or move up to 154 fight a spinks, forrest. So there is no excuse but for the FIGHTER.Then again is arum putting kermit out there cuz oh his more exciting style?Maybe the people on cottos jock should see Kermit which i personally like more than Cotto.

donputo69, why are you so selective with your comments. You can bet your bottom dollar that if it was Floyd taking this easy nights work you would be all over him like a rash but because its your top man Cotto nothings said. Your main arguement against Floyd is the calibre of his opponents but who exactly has Cotto been in with, Malianaggi, Torres, Judah and Mosley, and thats about it. I suggest you take the time to sit down and look at Floyds record because the names he has beat are like a whos who from super feather to junior middle. Bottom line.

So what's wrong with Cotto taking a "stay busy" fight? When you look at Floyd's so called run through 140 he didn't necessarily take on murders row (Corley, Bruseles & Gatti). When he made his jump to 147 he took on Mitchell, Judah and Baldomir...WOW talk about a group of burned out gimmes. Cotto never procalimed himself as the greatest thing since Ray Robinson. All he has ever said is that he'll fight whomever his company puts in front of him. He doesn't dodge and duck like PBF.

I didn't agree at first with Arum for putting on Cotto vs Gomez. but thinking about it again, it doesn't sound like a bad idea. Cotto had a very busy and hard 2007'. it's not good for a boxer to have one hard fight after another 3 or 4 times in a row. I say take it, then fight the winner of Margarito vs Cintron, even do I wouln't like to see Cotto vs another puerto rican. I would like to see Cotto vs Williams, great fight. but again Cotto would come on top fighting any of these guy's.

Don't blame donutpu69 for his opinion, he's just a victim of Bob Arums promoter hype. As far as Cintron, I too believe he will fair much better this time around in his rematch against the slower, and less talented Margarito. Manny Steward knows how to bring the best out of his own fighters while exploiting the weaknesses of their opponents.

Several of you have the wrong idea of Manny Steward, You say he knows how to bring out the best in all his fighters, is that what he did with Taylor against Wright? Pavlik? the clear answer here is NO. Taylor was awarded the draw with Winky and got KO against Pavlik, and is no longer working the Taylor corner by the way. Cintron-Margarito is going to be a great fight, Cintron wants revenge and Margarito wants another title, this equals great boxing. The Cotto-Gomez scrap should also be entertaining. I feel this will be kinda easy for Cotto but dont underestimate Gomez' chances for an upset, Gomez can give and take. Lets not forget he broke his hand in the second round against Ben Tackie and still fought to a unanimous decision. And yes, I know Tackie is no Cotto, but I was there that night, Tackie put on a hell of a display. So I'm predicting too bad @$$ fights that night in April. Peace Out!!

Cintron to get crushed again by Margarito. 3rd KO, Margarito presses forward-smothers the tall man's punches and makes him pay on the inside, will bring the heat and stop Cintron once again. Cotto to dominate Gomez in painful fashion, its going to be a brutal beating for Gomez -- KO RD 5 for Cotto. Why you guys bitching? Boxing fans a been to critical of Cotto. Every champion deserves a tune-up fight in between big fights and Cotto is no different. I'm glad He's not in the same Trinidad Kamakasi mission of going from big fight to big fight. Cotto's camp is not pushing the indestructable envelope and that's just good management.
Hope to see Cotto - Moneyweather soon..

All we can do on this site is argue over whos better than who and I know thats kinda the point of it but I for one respect all the top guys and all boxers for that matter. Cintron, Williams, Margerito, Cotto and Floyd are the cream of the crop at welter and I believe that none of these fighters are scared of the others. I think within the next two years there will be one left standing as number 1 as I believe they will all start to take each other on because politics can only stand in the way for so long. Lets face it, if this happens theres only one winner, us boxing fans.

Eastar, he does have a great track record and he can make fighters better, but it hasn't worked against great opposition. Winky beat Taylor, Pavlik KOed Taylor and Margarito already KOed Cintron, the advantage here is that Margarito has the mental edge going into this fight. Last time around Cintron blamed it on his hand injury right? which is cool I can understand that, but about this time, he just had a hand injury as well to his right hand, is he going to say something about that afterwards if he loses?? But I dont think Cintron can Beat Margarito, Tony will smuther him just like Golden Johnson and maybe finish him off earlier than last time.

Guys,
Peace to all of you! I predict that Cotto, well trained, will do what he did to Malligiani or worse against Gomez. I see a KO added on to Cotto's record! Cintron, I don't know that much about him but as a fellow Puerto Rican, I'll be rooting for him. Bottom line, Cotto will beat any of the above mentioned, including Williams, who couldn't handle a Carlos Quintana. So, please stop the hype about Williams. He failed against a man who was manhandled by Cotto. By the way, Puerto Rico has three current 147lb. world champions and Cotto can beat the other two. The only question is money May, and I think the ONLY welter that may beat him is, damas y caballeros de Caguas, Puerto Rico, Miguel Coootoooooo! Puerto Rico baby! Can't deny it! HU!

I can't understand why someone was so stupid to even post a comment picking Gomez over Cotto. I wont say that Cotto is the best P4P but he will kick Gomez butt so bad I know I will feel sorry for him before the fight is over. This guy is just a warmup for a potential fight with another big name. All boxers do this from time to time and it's the smart thing to do, if he keeps having war after war he'll have a short carrer and brain damage. If your a boxing fan you know this is true.

2009 Reader Of The Year Weighs In On Legacies Of Pacquiao And Mayweather
"Pacquiao has proven....in the ring... time and time again that he is the greatest of this time. He has earned his respect. He begs for nothing. He is a man content with his growth, his family and his achievements. A man the world has now turned it's eyes to behold. Floyd Mayweather is not even close in stature. He may possess the greatest skills but he is not the Face of Boxing today. Google Manny Pacquiao. There are 20 million searches. Google Floyd. There are 6.5 million. Look at the NYTimes, the Wall Street Journal and Time. Count how many words were used these past years to mention Floyd Mayweather. Then count the words still being printed about Manny. And keep counting. As I've said many times, Floyd has been too clever by half. He has short changed his public.....and has out-smarted himself. Manny will fight but a few more times. Enjoy it while you can. He is an all time great pugilist. Floyd, with all of his remarkable skills lack the will to be truly great in the biggest sense of the word. His legacy will look more like Holmes that Ali. He has earned it." ---November is half-way gone, but we don't need to keep counting ballots. It's a landslide. Fe'Roz has won the 2009 Reader of the Year award. His comments add to the website immeasurably, and he epitomizes the thoughtful, respectful, educated fan of pugilism we strive to cater to at TSS. Congrats, Fe'Roz, and please accept my thanks for being the valued member of this community that you are. Sincerely, Editor Mike
