It's On! Israel Vazquez -Rafael Marquez III

By David A. Avila

LOS ANGELES-Sitting inside the a Mexican restaurant located in the middle of historic Olvera Street, junior featherweight world champion Israel Vazquez and former champion Rafael Marquez strike a pose.

It’s the last time the two Mexico City warriors will do any posing side by side.

Vazquez (42-4, 31 KOs) defends his WBC and Ring world titles against Marquez (37-4, 33 KOs) on March 1, at the Home Depot Center in Carson. It’s the third fight between the little big men and will be televised on Showtime.

Both fighters arrive in L.A. on Wednesday to kickoff the final chapter.

If you’ve never seen refined violence to the 10th degree, then this is your big chance. Both Mexico City prizefighters are the best at their craft and you won’t find two other boxers with their fighting skills and passion for knockouts.

This trilogy is all about history.

“It’s why you fight, to make history,” said Marquez, 32, while inside El Paseo Inn located near the historic Avila House, the first non-Native American dwelling in the city of Los Angeles. “You fight so people can remember you long after you stop fighting.”

Inside the restaurant more than a 100 representatives of various media outlets crowded inside to see the Mexico City pair make their formal opening comments on the third fight.

The first meeting took place at the same venue the Home Depot and was set up so quickly that the public barely had enough time to generate interest. Within two weeks of the actual fight Vazquez and Marquez met at the tennis stadium and lit up the arena with their fury.

Marquez won when Vazquez was unable to continue because of an inability to breathe. Though the TV announcers and others saw the capitulation and as act of disgrace, Vazquez knew he would get another chance.

The rematch took place in Texas last summer and proved as explosive as anticipated. But the end results were not to Marquez’s liking.

“Everything went wrong from the beginning,” said Marquez. “First there were no commission members around when you needed them, then there were problems with the hand wraps. I went into the ring mad and out of focus.”

Marquez, unlike in his first encounter with Vazquez, did little jabbing and seemed more inclined to stretch out his opponent with every punch.

“I tell you I was out of focus,” Marquez says. “I had no concentration for that fight and it showed in the way I fought.”

Several thunderous exchanges saw Vazquez’s left hook inflict damage early in the fight.

In the sixth round another left hook sent Marquez careening around the ring. The referee stepped in and stopped the fight much to the chagrin of the fans and Marquez’s supporters.

Marquez isn’t giving any excuses but says he feels much better in California than Texas.

“This is where the fight should have been last time too,” said Marquez who along with his older brother Juan Manuel Marquez fought in the Forum Boxing shows early in their careers. “People know me and now Vazquez in California.”

Scott Woodward, vice president of Sycuan Ringside Promotions, said these two fighters cannot fail to excite.

“These are two legitimate pound for pound guys,” Woodward said. “That’s how you get a Fight of the Year.”

Many boxing publications named their second contest as the best fight of 2007.

Eric Gomez, vice president of Golden Boy Promotions, said even their first fight was “an instant classic” and deserving of credit as one of the best fights of 2007.

“These two little guys have big hearts,” Gomez said.

Vazquez, who recaptured the WBC junior featherweight title in Texas, said admiration for his opponent only drives him harder.

“Rafael Marquez is a great warrior who inside the ring will try to knock me out at all cost. I don’t hate him for that, I respect him,” said Vazquez. “Outside the ring we can be friends.”

rudy:  Vazquez to win the rubber match. Should be another action filled bloodbath!! Excited as hell for this fight and tickets for the fight are at a decent price, my only complaint for this fight -- Where the hell is the promotion for it? TWO AMAZING WARS and now we get a third and Shaw, GBP, and Sycuan all have done a TERRIBLE job promoting this fight -- these two WARRIORS deserve better for what they give us in the ring. Not just that but it is on free Showtime BUT with NO UNDERCARD!!! For a main event like this they should have at least one decent bout b4 the main event....

Saul:  Rudy, GBP and Sycuan are only associated promoters for this fight, it is Gary Shaw's dumb @$$ that has the rights to this fight. He is the one to blame for the poor promotion and no undercard. That been said, My dog Vazquez takes this one again by KO or TKO in the mid to late rounds. Im watching it live.

rudy:  I'm putting blame on all 3 promoters! I know Shaw is the lead guy for the show, but come on!!! Shaw gets the majority of the blame; but your telling me that GBP nor Sycuan could back this up a little bit????

BIGFREDO76:  What a waste.this trilogy could rival the Gotti/Ward and theses promoters fell asleep.Doesnt matter who GBP,Shaw it is their responsebility to promote it.Only the hardcore boxers knew this would have three fight but the promoters need to make it more main stream for the general public. Not to crazy about this fight?thats to bad cuz this fight had 2 awards of the year.FOY and Round OY.i guess watching washed up fighters is good for the sport.Vazquez in the rubbermatch.

Radam G:  This will be another good bout with Vazquez winning, again. I think that these dudes are going to fight five of six times like Sugar Ray Robinson and Jake La'Motta. And, in every fight, Vazquez and Marquez will have another war better than the last.

Saul:  I hear what you guys are saying brothers believe me, I agree totally in respect to the poor promotion. But we have to understand that Shaw was the one who is sitting behind the wheel on this one, he put the original together and is the main promoting company pushing it. I'm sure GBP and Sycuan would have done a better job but they weren't given the opportunity. But yes it has been poorly advertised. Ive seen this once before at the Home Depot Center back in 2006 when GBP did all the poor promoting for Jhonny Gonzalez vs Fernando Montiel, there was hardly anyone with me in the stands that night. All the promotion went to the Marco Antonio Barrera vs Rocky Juarez I fight in L.A. I hope the same does not happen to the upcoming Joel Casamayor vs Michael Katsidis bout which is on March 22 at the Morongo Casino. That Katsidis kid is bad ass.

COCO:  I like controversy, but there's no way to create it. If Tito-Jones was HBO PPV, then this one should definitely be a top dolla fight. Even Vargas-Mayorga was PPV for crying out loud. I guess Shaw only watches Nonito Donaire in action. Buy who cares about them. These fighters will definitely have the viewers on the edge of their seats. I just hope I don't spill my $12 beers when I go see this fight at the Home Depot Center! Marquez all the way baby.
Friday Jan 25, 2008
wayne:  There will be alot of blood spilled in this triliogy. I think Vasquez wins but you never really know. Both fighters are equal in caliber.
Saturday Jan 26, 2008
BIGDADDY74:  I don't know what kinda fights dp69 likes (Why would you call yourself that?,maybe it's better I don't know.) But these are the kind of fights that anybody but the SPCA could love.2 Gallos straight goin at it like real men. It's gonna be Marchquez Madness and the REAL fight fans are gonna love it.
Saturday Jan 26, 2008
paulbo:  I like Marquez this time, but that's not a knock against Vasquez. The've had two great fights. The winner in the third fight will be the fans, regardless of the outcome. Great rivalry and a guaranteed great fight.

Witter A Slapper, A Flapper (A Career In The Crapper?)
"Another upset! I keep making the right bet. I never thought for a moment that Witter was a good boxer or a hitter. He is just another slapper and a big-mouth flapper. In the hurt business, no word can hit you like a fist. He got knocked on his butt, and his words didn't cushion his fall. Hopefully, he will now shut up. More of today's boxers should learn the art of hurting, and cut out all this garbage of hyping. All the sightings of "Big Foot" and "UFOs" have been delusions, but these sightings of upsets in 2008 boxing are hard realities." ---TSS reader Radam is lovin' the upsets
