Edwin Valero: The Legend Continues

By David A. Avila

Early in his pro career Edwin Valero was a muttered-under-the-breath gym legend in Southern California.

Those that saw him spar in various gyms or read about his exploits in various web sites became curious about the Venezuelan boxer with shocking black hair.

The legend expanded after each fight ended in a first round knockout.

Now Valero defends his WBC junior lightweight title against Zaid Zavaleta (16-2-2, 11 KOs) on Saturday Dec. 15, at Plaza del Toros in Cancun, Mexico. The fight card will be televised on pay-per-view.

For once most of the world gets an opportunity to see with its own eyes the power and speed of Valero.

But let’s not jump ahead too quickly.

It was four years ago that Valero arrived in New York to take part in a Golden Boy Promotions fight card. Eager to display his heavy hands the Venezuelan fighter and his promoter were quicksand by the New York Athletic Commission that deemed the left-handed fighter medically unfit to fight. An early injury to the head was found and he was suspended forever in the entire country.

Golden Boy tried to fight it but despite sending Valero to top specialists in California the New York Commission refused to accept any new findings.

“No doctor has ever confirmed I have any kind of injury that prohibits me from fighting in the United States,” said Valero, 26.

Forbidden to fight in this country the part Inca Indian was forced to fight in other countries and looked destined to quit. But he did not waver.

It could have been the end for Valero.

“He has this kind of defiance,” says Fischer. “Anybody else would have quit.”

Though visibly upset by his inability to get back in the ring, Valero dropped his trainer, manager and promoters and roamed the outer portions of Los Angeles looking for gyms to keep fit and sharp. It became kind of a joke to hear that Valero was training here or there.

He was a virtual boxing gypsy.

“There were Valero sightings everywhere,” said Fischer.

In one instance Valero walked into a Montebello boxing gym and began working out on various bags with a speed and intensity never seen. At the time Sergio “The Latin Snake” Mora frequented that gym but nobody knew the guy in the black garb firing punches as if shooting a pump-action shotgun.

“I’ve never seen anybody do those things,” said Dean Campos then a boxing trainer at that gym called Solid Rock. “After I found out it was Edwin Valero I realized why people talked so good about him.”

Eventually a Japanese boxing promotion company Teiken signed him and moved him to the middle of Tokyo, Japan. He’s been there for two years dropping opponents like a mean-spirited bouncer.

“He’s an exceptional puncher and a very exciting fighter,” said Nobu Ikushima, coordinator for Teiken, a Japanese boxing promotion company.

With Teiken the Venezuelan bomber - who looks like soccer player not a feared knockout puncher - captured the WBA title 16 months ago with a 10th round stoppage of former champion Vicente Mosquera’s home country Panama. It was notable not because Valero won the world title, but it was the first time any opponent had lasted more than three-minutes.

“After I finally went into the second round it was kind of a relief after knocking out all of those guys in the first round,” said Valero who stopped 18 consecutive opponents in the initial round of boxing matches. “I swear for the first 30 seconds whatever strategy those guys have are out the window. The moment I feel a guy’s hurt I’m going to take him out.”

Since banned from fighting in the U.S. the southpaw bomber has knocked out 10 successive opponents.

Early Valero

Despite the eye-popping knockouts and animalistic fury Valero still can’t get back into an American arena.

But it was in the American arenas in Maywood and Irvine where most boxing fans first witnessed his kill-or-be-killed style.

It was through word of mouth that Valero was discovered early by Internet boxing reporters.

Joe Hernandez, who manages world champion Daniel Ponce De Leon, had signed Valero and invited several journalists to see his newest prospect.

“I had come to watch Ponce (De Leon) and I thought he was a pretty good hitter, but Hernandez said he’s just heavy-handed but I got another guy,” said Doug Fischer, managing editor of Maxboxing.com. “I expected to see power but when I went to watch Valero it was his balance, a certain fluidity and synchronicity that was almost machine-like.”

On the three rare occasions Valero boxed in front of Southern California crowds and he did not fail to impress in winning twice at the Irvine Marriott and once at the Maywood Activities Center with first round knockouts.

But that was only part of his growing legend.

“I heard they put him in with Mighty Mike Anchondo and they said he got the better of him,” said Fischer. “Every time I saw him sparring, nobody go the better of him, whether it was Armando Santa Cruz, Urbano Antillon, Jesus Soto Karass, it didn’t matter of their weight or experience. He always got the better of them.”

Now Valero returns to the North American continent eager to show his fans on live television that the legend is still fighting. For several years only the Internet provided boxing fans with information of his whereabouts.

“Without guys writing about me on the Internet nobody would know about me,” said Valero who will be fighting Mexico’s Zaid Zavaleta at Plaza del Toros in the tropical resort of Cancun. He expects the Mexican fighter to come right to him because of his record.

“Zavaleta has 11 knockouts in 16 wins,” says Valero who fights left-handed. “I have 22 knockouts in 22 wins. I always go for the knockout.”

Though the Venezuelan fighter has speed, agility and other intangible skills, he prefers to “Chloroform” his opponents.

“The crowd loves knockouts. It’s like in baseball when a guy hits a homerun or in soccer when a guy scores a goal. The knockout is like that,” explains Valero. “I just hope he’s not the little stone I trip over.”

Valero is eager to impress all those fans that have kept a vigil on his career.

“I will one day return to the United States,” he said. “My dream is to fight a big name in a Las Vegas arena.”

The legend continues.

Saturday Dec 15, 2007 08:01:58 AM
ManBoobs:  If you want a preview of what he can do, look on youtube for his chanpionship fight woth Mosquerra.
Saturday Dec 15, 2007 01:53:59 PM
Dougie Fischer:  That's my son. Edwin Valero who will destroy the other fighter.
Saturday Dec 15, 2007 02:34:14 PM
Gilberto_Roman:  How about Valero/Guzman in either Caracas or Santo Domingo? Or how about a return to Mexico against Soto? Then, if he is victorious, he can fight the Pac/JMM winner (Pac in the Philippines or JMM in Mexico).
Sunday Dec 16, 2007 02:13:35 PM
Ian Roman:  This guy can't win against Pacman or JMM.. He is full of holes.. Even dynamita is enough for this guy.. He swings so wide that a good counter will knocked this guy.. He is so slow Pac can throw 3 punch while Valero delivers a left hook.. We still don't know if he can take a punch.. He must fight a boxer with a name like Soto or Guzman.. But Pac and JMM.. He has still a long way to go..
Wednesday Dec 19, 2007 08:20:58 PM
Gilberto_Roman:  Ian, Keep in mind that Valero did show his toughness against Mosquera, and he got up off the canvas to win. He also showed terrific stamina in that fight. I don't know if JMM or Pac could take Valero's punch, and both have been less than stellar defensively, especially Marquez in recent fights, to my surprise.
Friday Dec 21, 2007 03:17:56 PM
Roland Torres:  Mr. Roman, with all due respect, I dont know if your knockout artist can take Pac's left hand either. That being said, do you really think pitting a hairline fracture in the skull againts Pac's left hook, left overhand, left whatever, is good idea? I would pay to watch this match though....but I havn't seen anything to convince me that he has more speed that Pac , we both know who has more gas, plus Manny's skull is fine as far i know....I heard that's important in boxing..:) take it easy....good day

Daian Cardona:  He will soon be fighting a guy named Gamboa. Let's see how he react to speed and power.....he has not techniques...he is overrated.....I dont see anything that convince me from this guy. He has a good left....no right and too slow for an opponet like Pacman or Gamboa
Wednesday May 7, 2008 12:23:55 PM
Ralph A. Ligtas:  Edwin Valero is a great fighter but not yet a great champion, a great champion beats champions, knocks out champions, pacman has done that in 3 weight divisions, Valero can be a great champion if trained by great trainers like Freddie Roach to train his defense and right hand, and learn the to change styles whenever needed, because a great champion can defeat champions with any fighting style
Wednesday Jun 18, 2008 05:03:01 PM
Filipino Fan:  Valero is really a great fighter, I don't care about his style or how he fights. I just wanna see him fight big names to earn his reputation more reputable. He is also an exciting fighter just like our very own Pac. I want to see him fight Pac someday, but Pac already moved to Lightweight Div hope he will (Valero) too to fight Pac or other big names someday. More Power to Valero!
Thursday Jun 26, 2008 12:48:32 AM
therealboi:  manny Pacquiao .. wont be a match for valero.. because.. Valero, is a lunatic..! he , is so great.. and a talented knockout puncher..! Go valero..!
Tuesday Jul 1, 2008 11:42:36 PM
dino:  common get real! everybody knows this guy cannot defeat Pacman. See what Pacman did to Diaz last sunday??? Does Valero want that to happen to him? Did you see how Manny got worried about Diaz after he knocked him down? Im sure Manny will be very worried too if hurts Valero taking into consideration he has previous skull problem. The only reason why Valero would like to fight Manny is only for "money". Yeah thats it. Lets be frank, Fighting big names like Manny, whether he wins or loses, will surely make him richer. I just hope he will be alive and kicking after his fight with Manny.
Wednesday Jul 2, 2008 12:11:19 AM
danny gallardo:  I think Valero will taste his first loss to Pacquiao. He will be knoked out in 3rd round... It's a mismatch....
Friday Jul 4, 2008 04:34:47 AM
Janbalz:  Valero and Pacman.....hhhmmm... its a big sell for Bob Arum.. a money making fight that is... hahaha bob is getting richer though.hahahah
Friday Jul 4, 2008 08:39:52 PM
boygulong:  Valero's Weaknessess VS PAC-MAN 1. NO footspeed. 2. NO handspeed. 3. NO defense. 4. Can't take punches 5. Never been to hell... :D
Saturday Jul 5, 2008 04:24:37 AM
jade:  valero has not yet fight a rated A boxer ,unlike pacman.....he has a long way to go to defeat my pacman. . . .
Sunday Jul 6, 2008 05:54:28 AM
vhudz:  PACMAN will beat him in just 4-6 roundz...!!!!!
Sunday Jul 6, 2008 10:35:55 PM
beanstalk:  I hope the doctors will not err in clearing valero for any skull problem. We do not want any deaths in the boxing ring. The Pacman might accidentally kill Valero with his bomb-like punches. Just look at what happened to the brave David Diaz. As if Diaz's face was nuked by North Korea. His face was beyond recognition. Good thing Diaz came out alive. I pray Valero will step out, if not carried out unconcious on a strecher , from the boxing ring alive and not a paralytic.
Monday Jul 7, 2008 04:51:54 AM
romanela:  Valero's not that good to be true champ. He'd just beaten lesser names. Hes 25 by 75 versus my idol Pacman.
Tuesday Jul 8, 2008 10:27:12 PM
beanstalk:  I can only agree to that. Valero is still untested. I do not think he can take Pacman's devastating punches. Pacman is way powerful and much talented than Valero. But, Pacman has to respect the knockout power of Valero. To pull off a victory in the upcoming Pacman-Valero slugfest, Pacman needs only to polish his defense. He cannot afford to be hit by Valero in a number of times he was hit by David Diaz in their last outing.
Wednesday Jul 9, 2008 12:44:50 AM
rezie:  if valero will fight pacman, this will be his first shamed loss in his boxing history that will give him a lesson. before facing big name boxers, he must first face other good boxers
Wednesday Jul 9, 2008 07:44:11 PM
beanstalk:  Valero is a mismatch for Pacman. I expect the game to end in round 5. I hope Valero's brain is still intact by then.
Friday Jul 11, 2008 06:21:47 AM
tony barajas:  Its a boxer versus a boxer. Both do have knockout punch and stragety. will see what happens.
Friday Jul 11, 2008 05:06:45 PM
ranger:  has this guy fought the likes of barrera , morales , marquez or diaz ? he has to earn them first , what he has has KO'd so far are a bunch of tricycle drivers ( as pacman says ). I think he must take on other filipinos or manny's brother bobby first before getting his skull crushed by the pacman and end up a total lunatic . Arum is sending him to his doom if this bout pushes thru . for pacman beating down those great mexicans is not an easy task to fullfill , it doesnt work out overnite for this guy . but i guess these incas are loony after all ...= )
Monday Jul 14, 2008 12:01:32 AM
JOJO:  i admire edwin valero, but i dont think he can do the same thing to these well named boxer, pac, jmm, or ddd, etc. experience is still the best, but these kid is still young in everything i think compared to pac, jmm etc well named boxer, still im pretty curious, my bet nov. 15 2008 if materialized, the GREAT PAC OF THE PHILS. beanstalk: I THINK YOU'RE RIGHT
Wednesday Jul 16, 2008 02:36:17 AM
dronems:  Señor Valero should fight first the likes of guzman, soto and other world class featherweights before dreaming of fighting PACMAN.
Sunday Oct 12, 2008 07:18:15 AM
Pugilist:  Valero? he is a careless fighter with potential. However, he really had no tough opponents. He didnt even fought high caliber boxers. The Japanese folks who adapted him are always giving him point getters. He ends the fight at round one because his opponents were nobodies... If he wants pac, he should; Beat Barrera, Morales, Marquez, Diaz, and Dela Hoya. If he wins over PAC, I'll shout his name all throughout the world!
Sunday Dec 14, 2008 12:09:42 PM
Pugilist:  merry christmas

Alvaro Portal:  Dinamita Valero Vs Paquiao , excelent combat,. two men one victory the best of the best show of this time . But first vs Juan Manuel Märquez I think Valero could be win by ko in 5 rounds more or less. Valero is a very strong warrior.

hungkag:  Amigos, please do not be too haughty about Senor Edwin Valera. Remember to be humble about him and think that all boxers started small and want to prove themselves when they are starting. Learn your history. If i remember right in a VIVA video when the PACMAN started his campaign in North America in early 2000 nobody would book him to fight elite fighter although he was already a two time world champion and he already defeated Lewholo Lebwada. His fame started only when he was given a chance to fight and destroyed an elite fighter, the mexican legend, Marco Antonio Barrera. Let us give Senor Valera a chance and let him prove his talent. All fans will be glad to see him given a chance to prove himself.

uno:  yeah, that's right amigo, let us give velero a chance, he's a good fighter, and a friend to pacquiao.. as far as i know he visited the philippines and invited at pacquiao's bday party last year, he's young and he'll be the next pacquiao if he train by freddie roach.. goodluck valero! mabuhay!
Saturday Jun 6, 2009 08:38:30 PM
caloy:  maybe right to show respect to valero, give him a chance and should not under estimate him BUT before he challenges PAC, he should first consider fighting the the world class names below PAC. it only shows he only needs money and not recognition in boxing history. valero has no class and still have much to learn

jackson:  edwin valero is the best check out the article edwin valero: destined to be a myth in the bleacher report

furious roy:  lets be real. a valero vs pacman fight will never happen. with all the complications we hear about edwins head, its unlikley enough as it is, add that to the fact that pacman only has a few more fights in him at the most before he retires ( freddy roach wants him to fight two more times and thats it) one of them is against cotto, and the other will surely be mayweather, valero needs to beat some more names first before he would be a big enough draw anyway. i think he is a fantastic fighter tho with underrated skills, and hope he goes all the way.
