Hopkins

Tuesday Nov 6, 2007

Let Hopkins concentrate on his promotional life, Joe. Target a young buck, and show 'em what's what. Kelly Pavlik would be a solid test.

Hey "Slappy Joe" Calzaghe, Bernard's A No Go

By Michael Woods

We as a society have a difficult time living in the moment. We don't pause much more than a second to smell the roses before we're plotting how we can add more roses to the bunch, and we can improve our smelling capacity to smell them more effectively.

With that in mind, I thought it would be nice to let Joe Calzaghe smell the roses, let him savor his 21st title defense.

OK, finished.

Time to ponder what's next for "Slappy Joe." (And you know, Joe, I use that tag with good humor, with full comprehension that even if you don't subscribe to the "shortest distance between two points is a straight line" dictum, you are still an ace boxer.)

It's looking like a fight with Bernard Hopkins, the wily vet from Philadelphia, is in the cards for Slappy's next one. The bout would be held up north, at 175 pounds, as Slappy would wave bye bye to 168, for a meaningful match at light heavy.

Meaningful, that is, if money is the main consideration. And since this is boxing, and a fighter's life is on the line every time, he should be well compensated.

There must be ample reward for putting your head on the chopping block. I'm all for it. But.

I'm not feeling a Calzaghe/Hopkins match.

I think it would be a plug ugly festival of slapping and holding, grabbing and ducking. The money, of course, won't be plug ugly. From a money standpoint, this match makes the most sense.

Hopkins is the only obvious option for Slappy from the economic standpoint. Roy Jones would've commanded same-neighborhood money, but he and Tito Trinidad are due to tangle on January 19, so his eyes are on that prize.

Hopkins, no fool, is keen to fight another boxer who cannot hurt him, for another tasty payday.

"He said after the fight that he would fight me anywhere, even in my backyard, but I'm not asking him to come to Philadelphia," Hopkins said to Dan Rafael of ESPN.com. "I wouldn't ask him to come to anywhere but Yankee Stadium. Hopefully for boxing, and for our legacy, it will happen."

I'm not on board with Bernard, for the good of boxing, or for the legacy. For the retirement accounts of both, yes.

From the legacy standpoint, Joe has few good options. He beats Bernard, which he will, because Bernard will throw about half as many punches as Kessler did, and he didn't throw nearly enough, and people shrug.

Eh, you beat a 42-year-old man. Same thing with a win over Jones.

Shrug. You beat an old guy.

Glen Johnson, same deal, only it's a harder fight, for less money. Same goes for Clint Woods, the IBF 175 pound champ. Money would be OK, cause he's a Brit, but at this juncture, Slappy can pick and choose, and he's going to choose a name. It won't be Lucian Bute, who has the IBF's 168 pound strap that Joe tossed to fight Peter Manfredo, though if I were his promoter, I'd be squawk real, real loud, and beefing why everyone's calling Joe C the undisputed, unified 168 pound champion. Unified, to be, means owning every damned belt out there. Shoot, Bute, wouldn't you like a crack at THE MAN at 168? Or maybe he knows he wouldn't stand a chance against Slappy Joe?

Chad Dawson makes tons of sense, from everything from a money standpoint, so to request Calzaghe fight the Connecticut -based WBC light heavy king would be a waste of time. Anyway, the name I'm thinking of is Kelly Pavlik. Let's go out on a limb and say Pavlik beats Taylor in their February rematch. Wouldn't you like to see how Pavlik trudges forward through Slappy's tosses?

He's young, so no one could say anything about Slappy beating on a faded vet. Pavlik is 25, a Top Rank fighter, so they could help manufacture Calzaghe/Pavlik scrap into a superfight in 2008. The money wouldn't maybe be as much as Slappy could get for Hopkins, but how much does money matter?

 I know, dumb question...

Calzaghe seems like he's leaning towards the fight with the best risk/reward ratio, with Hopkins.

"Hopkins is 42 but the guy is like a freak with regards to age. He's in great shape, lives healthily, is very professional, and is in great condition," said Calzaghe to Gareth Davies of the UK Telegraph. "He's proved himself to be the No 1 in the division. I want to go up to 175lb and fight the best. It was great fighting in front of a home crowd, but I can't see him coming to Cardiff. I'll fight him anywhere."

Slappy, here's a deal for you.

Chuck the Hopkins idea.

Take the winner of Pavlik/Taylor, and I'll throw you this bone.

I won't call you Slappy Joe anymore.

I know it ain't a mint, but it's the best I can do.

Give us fans a compelling matchup against a young buck in his physical prime, as Kessler is. That's the best you can do.

Bowe - Golota 3 NOW!:  I wish that Jermain Taylor could accept step-aside money with a guaranteed shot at the winner of Calzaghe - Pavlik for all the marbles at 168. Forget Hopkins; Calzaghe - Pavlik in February!

bill major:  roy jones is still a better fight than any of the guys out there. he is comfortable again i beleive and has dealt with the bad year. i think with his speed it would be a good fight ,with joe eventually winning by a late ko.
Tuesday Nov 6, 2007 08:20:14 PM
dan:  why can't he fight nard in the spring and fight the winner of pavlik/taylor after that? why should he wait till february to decide his future? and what if taylor wins the rematch -- i imagine a 3rd fight with pavlik comes first, no? c'mon, man.

fizz7777:  A very unprofessional report, and quite insulting to one of boxing's best current champions. You don't have to like 'slappy' Joe, but please give him some respect. I think good reporting can include humor dished out in a respectful manner. And BTW, someone should ask Joe's VICTIMS if he slaps after they've got busted up, instead of his potential opponents. Lacy & Kessler didn't mention any slapping after they lost, and although Joe doesn't punch that hard, he punches fast, in bunches and from all angles, and he doesn't stop for 12 rounds. I'd agree about the Hopkins fight, Joe has nothing to gain there - his detractors would immediately claim he beat an old guy. I'd go for Pavlik, I'm sure Joe would 'slap' him silly on the way to a unanimous points decision. Seriously though, I think Joe's too fast and Pavlick too slow to catch up with him. Pavlick is the fight that would get him more respect.

LC Greenwood:  Do you read the whole thing or just the headline fizz??? The writer wrote: (((( I use that tag with good humor, with full comprehension that even if you don't subscribe to the "shortest distance between two points is a straight line" dictum, you are still an ace boxer.))))) Guy called him an ace boxer. Lighten up, Calzaghe fan

fizz7777:  Yeah I read the report, the 'ace boxer' comment was just a prelude and excuse to spend the rest of the article calling Joe Calzaghe 'Slappy' in the most demeaning manner. Yes I have a sense of humor, but I don't read boxing mags to have a laugh, I expect to get professional unbiased reporting. Too much to ask? As far as I know, nobody ever wrote an article about Hagler reffering to him as 'Baldy' the whole way through instead of his real name. Here are the technical facts - Joe sometimes 'cuffs' his shots, that's to say he punches with the inner knucles, but that's because he throws a hell of a lot of leather and from unorthodox angles - which is what makes him very hard to beat. If he punched straight and less often, then he'd land every shot on his knuckles. I used to box when I was younger, and when I threw, say, a six-punch combo, at least one shot wouldn't be flush on my knucles - it's just the law of probability. Sugar Ray Leonard was once accused of 'slapping his way to victory over Hagler', and there's another guy who could throw combos all night. And though he was more accurate than Joe, he did his share of 'cuffing' or hitting from the inner part of the glove. So basically, the more you punch, the more you 'slap', some guys more than others. Some writers (and I think Woods is one of them) would have you believe that every fighter should fight in the 'technically correct' way to be worthy of praise, but that would just make boxing boring and eliminate the artists and mavericks that make it the most exciting sport in the world

Nader Khalifa:  This article is a disgrace. Slappy? Take a look at Lacy's face looking like he'd been hit by a truck after 12 rounds. 32 KO's in 44 fights? Slapping? Idiotic article. And how the hell is he going to fight Pavlik? Joe has struggled to make 168lbs for years now. Pavlik isn't going to move up is he? No. Then shut up about him having to fight Pavlik to get your worthless respect. And undisputed means you need to hold all the belts does it? Not if you can't win two of the belts without having to give one of the belts up it doesn't. He's won all four belts. You know absolutely NOTHING about Joe Calzaghe. Two fights on ESPN from your armchair probably in the States. Ignorant fool.

John:  Pure diatribe. I'm sure Joe Calzaghe will do just as you say so you don't call him Slappy Joe any more. I'm sure he couldn't give a monkey's what you call him. He's just beaten a young buck in his physical prime, a guy who has far more game than the limited Pavlik. You're the guy who wrote the nonsense about Trevor Berbick, right? You're a waste of space.

mr payback:  hopkins calzaghe will be made , it is a pre ordained business decsion by both parties. i bet it will be a huge promotion to , they will be bill it as the most imporant fight of the decade and talk about "legacys" and such. But really i don't even think bernard did that well against winky wright , i thought winky who is a slower smaller southpaw with less stamina and strenth then calzaghe basically went in their and outworked hopkins. but hey i will still watch it , i bet it would be a dirty fight to alot of head butting rabbit punching wrestling you name it bernard will do it, he gets dirty with age,
Wednesday Nov 7, 2007 08:23:56 AM
indeed:  cut the writer some slack , it is all in fun , i actually think "bitchslap" would be a good and bold nickname for joe calzaghe joe "bitchslap" calzaghe! it kinda has a ring to it.

US Baby!:  The Calzaghe fan club members coming to defend there man huh. You guys are all in love with Joe now, after he's priced himself out of big fights FOR YEARS, and so now the big fights that make sense, the names are past theire prime. Joe is a great boxer tho, thats in there, so why you guys get your knickers in a twist is unclear. Nader and John take a deep breath

dan:  if joe wants to fight the best at 175 thats chad dawson. listen to the commentary during the hopkins wright fight they even said even though that fight was for the ring magazine light heavyweight belt all they could think about during the fight was chad. chad would have made both those guys look old like they are. hopkins wont fight him and unfortunately i agree that joe would not be scared to fight chad were i think hopkins is, the money is not there hopefully chads following will grow to the point he will get these big fights.
Wednesday Nov 7, 2007 10:25:02 AM
Damian:  'US Baby' -- Please name one fight that Calzaghe has "priced himself out of". Was it not rather the yanks who kept pricing themselves out of fights with Joe? As far as I understand it, Roy Jones Jr, Bernard Hopkins and Jermain Taylor all demanded exhorbitantly high purses (even changing their minds overnight and asking for their purse to be doubled), thus ensuring that the fight would never take place. That's certainly what I had heard anyway. Does anyone have the actual facts on this please?
Wednesday Nov 7, 2007 11:57:41 AM
The Block:  You guys bump your gums about Joe! His career speaks for its self!! If he were American or English, nobody would have a bad thing to say! He's wooped them all and will continue to do so!

steadadelica:  i think the guy who wrote this article needs a 'slap' that should put him straight about the fight game, it migh even give him some insight! Pavlik represents another great American hope who will have his ambition emptied by Joe, bring him on; Cardiff, Paris, Tokyo, New York, moonbase 9! it don't matter.

Damian:  Congratulations to Michael Woods (surely a candidate for Sports Writer of the Year!): "This article is a disgrace"; "very unprofessional"; "insulting"; "demeaning"; "pure diatribe"; "the guy who wrote this needs a slap" (etc.) Yes, quite. I seriously hope that 'The Sweet Science' refrains from indulging in this kind of puerile name-calling in future and sets its standards at objective reporting and analyses instead. Apart from the deeply insulting, condescending and derisory tone of the piece, it also fails to mention that Calzaghe in fact sent an official statement to Pavlik immediately after his KO of Taylor inviting him to come and watch the Kessler bout and to negotiate a fight with him. As happened so many times before, it was the US fighter who declined. In any case, since consensus has it that it is Hopkins rather than Pavlik who is the top-five pound-for-pound fighter (Pavlik's not even in the top-ten), why all this clamour about Pavlik? Well, the answer to that is not hard to find: Ever since Lennox Lewis cleaned up the Heavyweight division and Tyson was KO'd by two British and one Irish guy, US boxing above middleweight has been pitiful: the heavyweight, cruiserweight, light-heavyweight and supermiddle-weight divisions have all been dominated by Europeans. Then along the great American hope, 'the new Mike Tyson', Jeff Lacy, and US writers rushed to name him the future best pound-for-pound boxer in the world. But then he met Joe Calzaghe, who absolutely humiliated the new US hope, made him look like an amateur, and gave him the boxing lesson of his life. So US boxing fans are understandably bitter, and they know damn well that their only top-ten fighter near Calzaghe's weight-class (Hopkins) has no hope against the Welshman, so: they pin all their hopes on a young, very pedestrian, as the only American who might have a cat in hell's chance against Calzaghe -- and let's be honest, it's nothing more than a puncher's chance, since in terms of skill, speed, movement, and ring generalship, Calzaghe is light-years ahead. " Wouldn't you like to see how Pavlik trudges forward through Slappy's tosses?", enthuses Woods. Yes, yes: keep telling yourself that Calzaghe can only 'slap' and 'toss' and that your American warriors can walk their way through him. Unfortunately, it's exactly what they said about Omar Sheika, Byron Mitchell, Jeff Lacy and dozens of others -- and look what happened to them. Why on earth do you think it would be any different with Pavlik? I'm afraid it's just desperate hope over reason. Might it not be time for you US boxing writers to grow up a bit and admit that the best fighters in the world (in the upper weight divisions especially) simply aren't Americans any more, and to give Calzaghe the respect he's due as being (to quote your own Manny Stewart) "an exceptionally great fighter" and "at least in the top two or three pound for pound"?
Friday Nov 9, 2007 10:14:40 AM
Damian:  Just to add some numbers to back up what I said about the dominance of Europeans in the top four weight-divisions, consider this: Of the 19 belts currently held, 9 are now held by British bosers, 3 by the US, and the other 6 by Russia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Hungary, Croatia and Romania. It's worth bearing in mind that England and Wales put together (where the British champions are from) has only a sixth of the population of the US. How about 'The Sweet Science' doing a piece on the recent boom in British boxing?

Anonymous user:  Stupid article. Joe has beaten the two best young hungry undefeated guys in Lacy and Kessler why do it with Pavlik? A Pavlik fight would look better but Joes been there and done it.

Sean MacDhai:  The tone of this article is rampant nationalism and Anglo/Euro-phobia dressed up as `light-hearted fun`. Have some respect and refer to Calzaghe by his name. It's always the same though. Pre-Lacy, "this is the fight that gains Joe respect." Didn't happen. Pre-Kessler, "THIS fight earns Joe our respect." Huh. Guess not. Whereas Lacy knocks out a shot Robin Reid and suddenly he's Jesus Christ himself. Saddening stuff.

WillMacx:  You say Joe "bitchslaps"? Well how does that make his oponents look? Fighters like Lacy, Kessler, Manfredo, Bika now hopkins aall got bitch slapped and lost. He must be a pretty good bitch slapper then it that case. If you dont like the guy thats fine... but just check out his fighting records til this date and then think before you write another comment against Calzaghe.

2009 Reader Of The Year Weighs In On Legacies Of Pacquiao And Mayweather
"Pacquiao has proven....in the ring... time and time again that he is the greatest of this time. He has earned his respect. He begs for nothing. He is a man content with his growth, his family and his achievements. A man the world has now turned it's eyes to behold. Floyd Mayweather is not even close in stature. He may possess the greatest skills but he is not the Face of Boxing today. Google Manny Pacquiao. There are 20 million searches. Google Floyd. There are 6.5 million. Look at the NYTimes, the Wall Street Journal and Time. Count how many words were used these past years to mention Floyd Mayweather. Then count the words still being printed about Manny. And keep counting. As I've said many times, Floyd has been too clever by half. He has short changed his public.....and has out-smarted himself. Manny will fight but a few more times. Enjoy it while you can. He is an all time great pugilist. Floyd, with all of his remarkable skills lack the will to be truly great in the biggest sense of the word. His legacy will look more like Holmes that Ali. He has earned it." ---November is half-way gone, but we don't need to keep counting ballots. It's a landslide. Fe'Roz has won the 2009 Reader of the Year award. His comments add to the website immeasurably, and he epitomizes the thoughtful, respectful, educated fan of pugilism we strive to cater to at TSS. Congrats, Fe'Roz, and please accept my thanks for being the valued member of this community that you are. Sincerely, Editor Mike
