pavlik taylor

Wednesday Oct 24, 2007

A rematch in an Ohio football stadium in the summer would do better, but I say, let's keep up the momentum from September and get Pavlik and Taylor squared off sooner rather than later.

Pavlik/Taylor II Purse A 50-50 Split

By Michael Woods

No fight in recent memory has been a more logical candidate for an immediate rematch than the Jermain Taylor/Kelly Pavlik Sept. 29 thriller in Atlantic City which saw Pavlik shrug off a knockdown and stick around long enough to put a kayo flurry on the unbeaten middleweight champion.

There was talk that Pavlik would take an interim fight before Taylor and he gloved up for a sequel, but the interim option has been junked, as Taylor says he’s ready to get his revenge on the Youngstown hitter.

One hitch—-the middleweight title won’t be up for grabs in the rematch, which will likely take place around mid February, maybe in Las Vegas.

Instead, Taylor has conceded that he had no business, at age 29, trying to demand his body make 160 pounds, the self-same class he debuted at as a pro back in 2001. So he’s calling for the sequel to be fought at or under 166 pounds, and thus, no belt will be on the line. Unless, maybe Floyd Mayweather buys Boxing Digest magazine, and BD goes into the sanctioning body business.

TSS talked to Taylor’s promoter, Lou Dibella, and asked him if the absence of the belt diminishes the sequel somewhat.

“Jermain was such a good champion, he would’ve moved up to 168 pounds, but he insisted that he stay there and give Kelly a chance,” Dibella said. “I don’t think it matters at all that the middleweight title isn’t on the line. It was a sensational fight. We’re not doing this because we don’t want a sanctioning body not to get paid. But Taylor is a big guy, not as young as Pavlik, 166 makes more sense. You can make the argument that belts are less relevant these days, but this isn’t being done to diminish the belt.”

Dibella gives Taylor props for sticking at 160 to give the 25-year-old Pavlik a crack, and maintains that the Ohioan would’ve been fighting Giovanni Lorenzo on Boxing After Dark for the vacated middleweight strap had Taylor gone north before testing Pavlik.

Maybe that fact is being considered when we learn that it appears that the money for the sequel will be split 50-50 between the new champ and the now challenger.

Hats off to all involved, if this does turn out to be the case when all T and Is are crossed and dotted. An even split, which prevents ego-fueled feuding (cough cough Winky Wright) and lessens the momentum for the return engagement, is so reasonable, and so wise, and so instructive to all promoters and fighters. The terms could still be up for debate, as Pavlik’s trainer Jack Loew has been making noise that his guy might not fight for a 50-50 split, as he considers him the main drawing card in the equation.

The rematch will likely land on PPV, so of course there should be plenty of pie to slice up.

One question that is on many minds: will Emanuel Steward get a piece? The sage of Kronk stepped in for Pat Burns after Taylor/Hopkins II, and it is clear that if Taylor hasn’t slipped in that time frame, then he certainly hasn’t flourished either. There’s no way blame can be attributed accurately. We can’t discern from the outside if Taylor loves the sport as much as he did, if the weight drain sapped his energy too much, if Steward cannot hope to give ample time to JT with all his top tier clients and rising stud prospects.

Dibella doesn’t know what Taylor’s corner will look like in his next fight.

“It’s not my decision to make,” the promoter said. “It’s not for me to say.”

So, will Taylor say?

Co-trainer Ozell Nelson, Taylor confidante, told TSS that Team Taylor and Steward will get together soon, and see where they stand. “We haven’t really talked about it,” Nelson said. “We’ll get together in the near future. But you can learn a lot from a loss. And I betcha the next time if Jermain gets Kelly hurt, he’ll pick him apart this time.”

The absence of the belt won’t make the sequel any less compelling, Nelson says.

“The belt really doesn’t matter,” he said. “It’s about whipping that boy’s ass.”

D Stro:  JT is coming up in this deal. He isnt a main event ticket seller.... He fought Spinks in what is suppose to be Taylor teritory in Memphis and couldnt sell the place out. Kelly Pavlik needs to reconsider the 50/50 split. He left Jermain Taylor in bad shape in the first fight and should get paid the way an undefeated champion should get paid in the second. Even though its not for a title, Pavlik is the one people will show up to see, not Taylor.
Wednesday Oct 24, 2007
Radam G:  Well, it may be a 50-50 split, but JT is going to get another 100-0 split beatdown. In the rematch, JT will have a severe meltdown. He cannot handle "The Ghost" Pavlik at any weight. Go for the catchweight of 166, JT is just going to catch an ice-cold knockout. He will feel the shills from "The Ghost." BOOOOOO! Don't put it on Manny Steward. He cannot train JT against a ghost. Team Taylor may consist of anybody, but they will not be ghostbusters.
Wednesday Oct 24, 2007
Ted H:  Taylor should be trying to make 155, either that or find some other way to earn a living. He'll be very lucky to survive a rematch with pavlik at 166 with his mind and body still functional.
Wednesday Oct 24, 2007
jj:  Pavlik is not "all about the Benjamins he is about the fight, but he deserves to get PAID. Belt or no belt, 50/50 split or whatever, Pavlik will still be the winner 2nd time around. He has the composure to survive a near KO, to train under the glare of Team Taylor's criticism and emerge the champ. All in a day's work for somebody who is a deserving, hard working champion.

Golota fan:  Pavlik's going to win...by KNOCKOUT!!!
Thursday Oct 25, 2007
rbk:  Interesting to note all the bandwagon boys hopping aboard Pavlik's train. A year ago no one (except for fight fans) even knew who he was and now Pavlik is the unbeatable animal.
Thursday Oct 25, 2007
Taylor Fan:  What do you know Golota fan? You're a Golota fan. Anything you say is invalid. Golota quit on his stool against a washed up Tyson. As far as, Taylor getting a beat down. If he goes back to his old trainer, he will knockout Pavlik. He has lost his hunger since he switch promoters. If you are a boxing fan, you will see that he lost his desire. The only person that can give him back his "desire" and "relentless" attack style is Pat Burns. Pat Burns is to Jermaine Taylor as Kevin Rooney and Teddy Atlas is to Mike Tyson.
Thursday Oct 25, 2007
Golota fan:  What I know, Taylor fan, is that the guy you're a fan of is going to get knocked TFO in brutal fashion. Pavlik is by far the hungrier fighter. As for Golota, he bruised up a ready Kevin McBride and is now going to win the title is his next shot. He hasn't fouled a single guy since Bowe 2, and he's the most charismatic guy around. Glory to Golota!
Thursday Oct 25, 2007
garrubal:  50-50 split makes no sense. 55-45 in favor of Pavlik seems reasonable.
Thursday Oct 25, 2007
lefty:  Pavlik had pretty much recovered before the second round was over and prepared from that point on to induce a championship beating on Taylor. That was a great shot he landed on Pavlik. It didn't work and now Taylor knows what it like to be stalked and destroyed by Pavlik. Good for Taylor if he gets his fight but look for it to be more of a mismatch this time around with Pavlik adding another KO to his resume. Confidence is a resource Taylor doesn't bring this time and it will prove devastating. Just my prediction.
Thursday Oct 25, 2007
Baby Dee:  Isn't everyone being a lil too hard on Taylor. I like Pavlik, and yes, he did KO JT, BUT, it's not like Pavlik whooped his ass for the whole 7 rounds. JT was wiining the fight up until then. It was close, but JT was up. Pavlik was not fully recovered before round 2 was over! He was still shaky. Taylor was on that ass the whole round. If anything, Pavlik was lucky that JT missed about 75% of his shots, or it would have been over indeed. Taylor simply got caught. It took 6 flush shots from Pavlik to KO JT, who was dead tired. If JT was such an easy fight, why didn't he get JT out of there sooner. Pavlik was landeing the right all night long, and it did nothing to JT, as you can tell, by the way JT kept coming in. When they were going toe 2 toe, JT was lighting that ass up. Like I said, yes I know Pavlik won, and by KO, but lets not write off everything JT did, up until getting CAUGHT, and think this fight will be easier. I don't think anyone can disagree w / the heart JT showed, the spirit of a champion, and the willingness to go heads up w / Kelly, when everyone thought he would run. I din't see Kelly do anything special, in the first fight, to warrrant the rematch, as a walk in the park. In my opinion, It will be even longer than the first. Think of how Israel Vasquez was written off in the rematch w / Marquez, and we all know what happened in that fight. I like JT, and Pavlik, and wish them both the best, and hope they give us another entertaining fight to watch. Peace!
Thursday Oct 25, 2007
wayne:  I'd like to see the winner of Pavlik vs. Taylor II fight Irish John Duddy next. I think the outcome of Pavlik vs. Taylor II will be no different from the first. Should be a good one though.
Friday Oct 26, 2007
donputo69:  im still sticking with my man jermaine taylor..i agree with you babe dee..its not like pavlik whoop on jt..he caught him with a good shot and that was the end..much props to pavlik,,but in the rematch? well i see jt winning by split dec.
Friday Oct 26, 2007
Guy:  Baby Dee....you speak the truth. The reason for the rematch is because it was a good action, evenly matched fight. If Jermain can learn to block a right hand every once in a while, Kelly can be in for a rough night. If Jermain keeps the left low, he'll go to sleep again because no one at middle or super middle can take those shots all night.
Friday Oct 26, 2007
lefty:  Bady Dee. Pavlik is a monster pure and simple. The only asswhooping taylor administered was the few seconds of the 2nd round. Then he found himself sitting flat on his ass slobbering all over himself in the seventh. Pavlik was the better fighter thoughout the fight and has always been the better fighter but had to go throught hell to get his respect. Pavlik is the real deal and the shot caller now so consider it all over.
Saturday Oct 27, 2007
lefty:  Pavlik's punches are to potent for JT and JT is there to be hit. Its over. Now Bernard is a different story because of his ring intelligence and ability to slip punches.

Anonymous user:  If Pavlik was controling the fight, why was he down 5-1, and 4-2 on the official cards??? Shoot, HBO had JT up. I think everybody and their mama had JT up. I ain't saying Pavlik won't win again, i'm just saying, it ain't going to be a walk in the park like all of you think. Bottom line is, JT was cruising to a UD, and Pavlik caught him w / the equilizer. Plain and simple. JT needs to make simple defensive adjustments, and make sure he doesn't punch himself out, and he wins fairly easily. He needs to keep the left up, and he will be cool. I'll say it again. Other than one punch KO power, what does Pavlik do so special??????? He is flat footed, simple head movement, and a good jab. To beat Pavlik, all you have to do, is stay off the ropes, and employ the Marco Antonio Barrera stragedy against Rocky Juarez in the rematch, and Pavlik looks basic. Plain and simple!
Saturday Oct 27, 2007
lefty:  Hate all you want. Those score cards were bull. Manny even praised Kelly for his underestimated skills and speed. Go to youtube and check out Andy Lee. He'll raise your hate level even more. Sorry got to now and check out Roman Greenberg. I hear he's a good fighter.

Jerry A.:  A great fight indeed. I just wanna echo what has already been said. Taylor, start moving side to side and keep your guard up. For some reason Taylor loves to rock his arms back and forth and back straight up. Just keep your guard up move side to side get your distance and tee off on the ghost. I am also a Taylor fan and I cant wait to see the rematch. I also cannot believe people are suprised that Taylor wants a rematch. Hell ya he wants a rematch! Taylor is a true champion and he wants to fight the best right here right now. I am a Taylor fan for this reason and also because of his hand speed and punching power. Taylor has it all, he just needs to keep that left up.
Saturday Oct 27, 2007
Jerry A.:  P.S. Like Teddy Atlas would say, I would tell Tayor to keep that left up and I would have him hold that left up so many times he could not do it wrong even if he wanted to. Keep that left up.
Saturday Oct 27, 2007
lefty:  Pavlik is like Monzon with a jab longer and stronger than that of Taylors. Enough said. We all saw the fight didn't we?
Saturday Oct 27, 2007
lefty:  Pavlik is like Monzon with a jab longer and stronger than that of Taylors. Enough said. We all saw the fight didn\'t we? Also when fighters focus on keeping the guard up to protect their head from those piston like jabs then they'll find themselves pissing on the canvas from a sledgehammer shot to the gut. PAVLIK OWNS THIS WEIGHT DIVISION WITH HIS DEVASTING POWER WITH SKILLS. Sorry Taylor fans.
Saturday Oct 27, 2007
Jerry A:  Some defense is better than no defense. Taylor kept rocking his arms up and down and if he was rolling punches I sure did not see it. Pavliks ghostly right hand was landing all night. Also, I enjoy a big puncher who can make a fighter pay for keeping his hands up by going to the body like haton, Castillo Chavez Jr and the great Chavez Sr, but there are fighters who can keep their guard up and fire their own jab like Winky Wright. and I believe Taylor has the speed to fire the jab from the guard and go right back to the guard while he moves.

fistic:  bottom line is we all want to see it. too bad it'll likely be on ppv. think of all the good, competitive, intriguing matchups and activity in boxing recently. whatever the outcome, it's at the top of the list (save cotto-mosley, hatton-mayweather) for a true boxing fan. and the fact that we have a relatively popular ex champ against what could be future star (yeah, a bit cause he's white) is terrifc. predictions should be made with a recognition that they are just that, we don't know teh future. wisdon and humility should replace brashnbess and arrogance when making a prediction. the fans of boxing also need to help make the image of the sport better. we're not all imbeciles. and if i had spell check i would look a lot better saying that.
Sunday Oct 28, 2007
Anonymous user:  Pavlik needs another big pay day. So just keep talking up Taylor and what if's.
Sunday Oct 28, 2007
Jerry A:  Some great fights to watch and do not forget about Calzaghe Kessler on HBO and Marquez Juarez on Showtime this weekend. Its been a great year for boxing and it will only get better if the best continue to fight the best like they have been. I hope I see Manny Pacquiao vs Juan Diaz soon. That would be a great fight. Juan Diaz had some words for Manny Pacquiao at the end of his last fight and I agree. Lets get ready to rumble. I love it

JSmutts:  Can we just say Jermaine has ridden the cloud long enough. Boxing has been great to him and he hasn't been great to boxing. He got a gift in Taylor/Hopkins II, then had some horrible performances that he just looked awful and couldn't get the likes of Cory Spinks and Kassim Ouma out of there? Winky is of course on a different level and would've gave JT his first loss by KO if Winky had power. We know JT has power and couldn't get Winky out because of the defense but he got trashed by Winky with no power. Who will step and agree that if Winky could punch harder, the Pavlik fight would've been his second KO loss? The rematch is all up to Jermaine. Before Taylor got in there with Hopkins in the rematch, Jermaine was on that pre-K.O Jeff Lacy level where opponents just knew at any moment they could wake up to the aroma of the smelling salt! A few bad performances and now we all know JT has this fight to lose or win on his own merit, if he just returns to pre-Hopkins form.
Monday Oct 29, 2007
George J:  Pavlik as the champ should get more $$$! As far as the rematch, let's not jump into conclusions just yet...Pavlik was down and almost out remember? I favor Pavlik in the rematch but anything can happen.
Monday Oct 29, 2007
dog:  hey lefty jt got knocked out sorry the fight was scheduled for 12 your buy never made it by 7 sorry be salty its ok dont hate kelly is just on another level it happens and the sad part is he doesnt care about the cash he just fights because its what he is good at.
Thursday Nov 8, 2007
mike d:  pavlik backed jt up all night. jt has to be more elusive the next fight and focus on outscoring pavlik not brawling with him. I predict a JT decision win, he will not catch as many pavlik right hands this time. you will see a much different fighter in JT next fight.
Tuesday Dec 18, 2007
allensdad:  ok here t it is in a nutshell pavlic will be stronger at 166 and faster, so those of you who think taylor wil be elusive and just out box pavlic are dreamin, pavlics work rate will be to much for taylor again ,10th round tko pavlic
Thursday Jan 17, 2008
drag:  lol I thought i seen someone talk about someone giving up against a washed up tyson up there lol this is funny since very few were ever really able to comepare to Iron mike. ya he had a bad attitude but he waS ONE if not the best there ever was and ya you can talk about old evander takin his belt but please mike already had beat the rest and shoulda already retired by that point in his life/carreer lol so ya take someone who's been bashed by the baddest guys around for years been sent to prison and still could knock any of you losers out period and from what ive seen latly these boxers couldnt last 1 round with old iron so ya lol
Saturday Feb 16, 2008
janes:  kelly pavlik is overrated. ithought taylor won the rematch. he landed more power shots

No Love For The Modern Glove
Fight fans who are of the opinion that modern boxers could have held their own against guys from earlier eras always seem to ignore the fact that boxers back in the day were more durable than modern ones and had to be because of the different conditions under which they fought. For one thing, the lighter, non-water-resistant, horsehair gloves used in earlier eras required one to have stronger hand bones than the heavier, foam-padded, water resistant gloves used today, so any modern fighter who suffers chronic hand injuries would never have lasted very long in bouts fought in earlier eras (unless, of course, they took a little off of every punch that they threw, which, of course, would have made them much less effective fighters). ---TSS reader Feed The Cat offers some perspective on the Old vs. New debate
