Peter didn't look all that sharp against the late stand in. McCline, with a more concerted push, could've finished him off. But he got tired, and faded.

Peter Survives Knockdowns, Outpoints McCline

By Michael Woods

Yes, fight fans, there was another fight happening in the US on Saturday evening.

There wasn't too much of the Manny Pacquiao energy and output on display, as Sam Peter put his interim WBA title on the line at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Saturday evening, against Jameel McCline.

Yes, the large Nigerian banger exited with a win, as expected, but there were some precarious moments in the second and third round for the big Nigerian, and quite possibly, Oleg Maskaev is wishing his back had held up. Peter didn't look overly sharp, and if McCline's stamina had help up better, his title shot winless streak would've been broken.

TSS scored it 116-111 for Peter, though many of the rounds were close. Had McCline jabbed more, heck, had he just thrown more, the story could've been different.

McCline was a late inning relief pitcher for Oleg Maskaev, who withdrew from the gig with a bad back. The WBC installed Peter as the interim champion, and Maskaev can have a crack at "his" title, which he won from Hasim Rahman in August 2006, when he's well.

This was McCline's third crack at a heavyweight title. The 37-year-old has lost to Wladimir Klitschko, Chris Byrd and Nikolay Valuev.

In the third, McCline notched two knockdowns. Peter did well to exit the round. A right uppercut stung Peter, and then a right cross had him on the floor. His legs looked a little wobbly but he rose and re-entered the fray. A left hook sent him to the deck for the second time, and the crowd roared, sensing a major-league upset. He pulled himself up using the ropes, and everyone held their breath. But McCline didn't close the show, to his chagrin.

Peter went down, from a right, at the tail end of the second round. He had taken the round, but a hard right, with a little push, put him on the floor.

Peter dropped a nice right cross at the end of the first round. McCline looked to clinch several times, but didn't look scared in the first.

After the third, McCline, one would think, would've come out guns a blazin to start the fourth. But no. He allowed Peter to regain his legs, and didn't check to see if there were still cobwebs on his brain.

Peter, a 27-year old Nigerian native, rises to 29-1 with the win.

McCline drops to 38-8-3.

Peter revealed that he broke his left hand during camp, but chose to fight on, so he deserves points for not pulling out. Both hands, he said, were hurting him during the fight. "I knew I had to stand and defend my belt," he said, when asked if he thought he was a goner in the third.

McCline, after, admitted that he should've closed the show. "I wasn't happy with my performance," he said. "I could've finished him. I should've finished him and I didn't. I thought I had him. He got away and that's why he's the champion. Sam Peter is a great champion."

The judges were Julie Lederman, Steve Weisfeld and Billy Costello. Julie had it 113-112, Weisfeld 115-111, and Costello saw it 115-110.

SPEEDBAG Roy Jones and Tito Trinidad were in the house.

--Shaggy, of "Boombastic" fame, did a performance before the main event. He was not lipsynching. He was not wearing an inappropriate bikini, either.

---The atmosphere, the decibels,  during Golota/McBride were quite impressive. Buddy McGirt worked McCline's corner.

---Ex TSSer Michael Olajide was in the house. As was Junior Jones, Iran Barkley and Zab Judah. He drew some boos. Wyclef Jean got some claps. Don King drew boos and cheers, slightly more boos.

---Stacy McKinley gave McCline the throat-cut gesture several times before the bout began.

--Massachusetts fight fans would recognize McCline's trainer: "Poppa Ray" Drayton was the chief second. I was shocked, SHOCKED, to learn his real name is Matthew.

--Julie Lederman was kind enough to give me a judging tutorial pre-bout, which helped me focus doing the deed for Showtime. I have to admit though, I didn't adhere totally to her wisdom; one or two times, I tripped up, and shared a comment or two with Ron Borges, who was filing for ESPN.com.

--Please, Showtime, I beg of you...please add a Punchstat/Compubox stat to your shows! Farhood, can you hook that up?

btk:  I had McCline winning. I've been saying over and over again, McCline is the best active heavyweight in the world, and people forget that. But tonight, people remembered. McCline won this fight. An atrocious decision.

Kool-Aid:  Peter loses credibility with this fight. If Jameel McCline is knocking you down, he has no shot at beating Klitschko! He probably can't be Holyfield. Shows what a sorry state the heavyweights are in...Pathetic.

Mitch & Murray:  My God did Golota look GREAT! He was robbed in his title shots except his losses to Brewster and Lewis. He beat Byrd and Ruiz. Please give Golota Sam Peter NOW because there had been talk of him being the replacement, and had that been the case, he'd have knocked Sam Peter out. He has much more thunder than McCline, who is a top-5 heavyweight, but Golota knows hoe to finish. Just ask McBride. I would LOVE to see Golota - Peter in the Garden in December! Heck, make it 12/25/07!

btk:  I thought Peter had a beard. Boy was I wrong. Klitschko or Valuev will KO him with relative ease. God Bless.

Pete:  I had it 114-112 McCline. He was robbed and should be wearing the strap. I was also incredibly impressed with Golota. I'd like him to fight Peter next. Or a McCline rematch, because it's warranted.

ICE:  From what I have seen of Stacy McCkinley... he is a major CLOWN

McCline FAN!:  A star was born last night in McCline! He looked like the old McCline we knew, the one who destroyed a prime Michael Grant. If he only finished! He needed to know that he'd never win a decision against the popular Peter, and therefore he should have brought his own judges, his left hand and right hand. But everyone knows he won the fight and is the Heavyweight Champion of the World! Congratulations Jameel, I knew you could do it! And get your name cleared on this steroid/HGH nonsense, make a statement, prove the malicious accusations false, and get a rematch with Peter ASAP and finish him next time and don't leave it to the judges Champ!

bill major:  with maybe a 10-8 in the 2nd rd and a 10- 7 in the 3rd from the 2 knockdowns you could give mcline the fight .i dont know what fight the judges were watching with their terrible scores. peter is in for a hard road now that everyone knows that he can be taken out. good for you jameel

Radam G:  Well, first, Peter is fat. Walking around at 275 and than getting down to 250 is a sorry state for a man who's only 6-foot tall. This generation of heavyweight are so lazy. They need to get in the gym and stay there. Just imagine people thought of the late, great heavyweight champion Sonny Liston as being the big, ugly bear and hugh fighter. Liston never weighted more than 225, period! This era of heavyweight are obese and with very limited talent, discipline and skills. They are like Jess Willard -- a big dude with no talent. And just imagine the late, great Jack Johnson took a $30,000 dive agains this bum. "Big Time" McCline has exposed the Nightmare. Peters is now the Nigerian day dream.
Sunday Oct 7, 2007 06:20:12 PM
wayne:  Peter got up off the canvas and still won. Besides that McCline is on steroids.
Sunday Oct 7, 2007 06:28:53 PM
Sid:  Klitschko should go after Peter NOW. Peter said he wants it and Klitschko doesn't duck anyone. That would be a worthwhile unification match, though Wladimir will KO Peter inside of 5 now that he's been thoroughly exposed. Imagine if Toney had more than middleweight power?
Sunday Oct 7, 2007 06:35:32 PM
Evan:  The accusations against McCline are just that. Accusations. The man has NEVER used steroids. The only athletes that I know of who have admitted to performance-enhancers are (1) Sugar Shane (2) Marion Jones and (3) Jason Giambi and (4) Barry Bonds (in leaked grand jury testimony). Jameel McCline is clean and NOT on the junk, and his reputation shot into the stratosphere after he beat Peter last night. He won. I don't care about those crooked cards.

Ricky Roma:  Ask yourself- Did McCline look to be on steroids ? The answer is a resounding NO. He admitted afterwards that he wanted to wear a shirt in the bout (ala Tyson in his last exhibition) but the old-school establishment would not have it. So what does he do ? He slaps the living spit out of Peter... Welcome back Jameel, you were dearly missed.

rudy:  Sad, sad state the HW division is in. Old recycled fighters, 5 so called "title" holders, injuries left and right to these lumber jacks who carry more weight than they should, then what -- fights that resemble sumo wrestling in the ring - gimme the lower weight classes - action, speed, defense, and power punching! Get rid of the HW division, dont think it will be saved any time soon with a Unified champ...
Monday Oct 8, 2007 09:08:10 AM
Perry S.:  Actually, the HW division is in great shape, we just need more fights and a tournament. And legalize all the steroids, therefore everyone's on an even playing field. Most of them are on the juice in some way or another anyway so let's save the money and time we're spending on testing. I can't believe McCline wanted to wear a shirt during the fight. Astonishing. But, I think Valuev will emerge as the next great HW Champion.

Bruno:  Sam Peter will be a very rich man by the time his championship run is done!
Monday Oct 8, 2007 06:13:32 PM
McCline the Champ:  I just watched Peter - McCline for the 5th time. 114-112, McCine. GARBAGE decision.

Angie And Goody...23 Years Later
Twenty three years later after they seconded Marvin Hagler and Ray Leonard in Las Vegas, Goody Petronelli and Angelo Dundee crossed paths again. This time, it was at Foxwoods. Photo/friend of TSS "The Iceman" John Scully reports there were only pleasantries exchanged. Goody didn't debate the split decision victory enjoyed by Leonard, which to this day Hagler disputes.
