Pac Man Barrera

Friday Oct 5, 2007

Pacquiao's power and desire mean it doesn't matter that he's pulled in so many directions in his homeland. But Saturday, we know the direction he'll be pointed in--Barrera. Straight ahead. Throwing.

Pacquiao Distracted, Will Still Win

By Mike Lynch

Manny Pacquiao is spreading himself way too thin. Matter of fact, he’s involved in so many extra-curricular activities that he’d be an awful professional boxer if he were anyone other than Manny Pacquiao.

When I spoke with Freddie Roach over the summer, he was expecting Manny to start training at his Wild Card gym in Hollywood sometime in July. According to Roach, Manny said he would be ready to fight in September, even if he didn’t need to lace them up for real until October. As it turns out, Pacman’s slated to fight on Saturday night, October 6. As it also turns out, Manny was not training at Wild Card in July.

Why?

Where do I start?

Manny is a bigger star in his native Philippines than any American athlete since Muhammad Ali. Tiger Woods might seem to be big in America, but I’ve never met anyone that feels passionately about him. Personally, I would go as far as to say that he’s more of a testament to American capitalism, consumerism, and marketing than he is an example of American athletics at its peak. He’s a construction of corporate America. He’s popular on the surface, but real Americans know that real athletes don’t compete while dressed for dinner.

Pacquiao transcends that gap in the Philippines, though. In the past 12 months he has worn the hat of politician, huckster, movie star, pop star, tabloid fodder, and oh yeah---the most electrifying boxer in the world. There’s no faking it in the boxing ring, as Jermain Taylor recently discovered (detract a point for that low blow!). Pacquiao has long been distracted but has always brought the goods on fight night.

But here’s the question: Can he keep it up? How long can Manny burn that candle from both ends before he runs out of wick? The stories of him surfacing from across the Pacific are certainly absurd. He’s fighting a legend on Saturday. And yet, at times, beer commercials and romantic comedies were reportedly taking precedence over his training. Will he have the legs to stand in? Will he have the wind to throw 800+ punches if necessary? His training regimen leaves more than just traces of doubt. But your eyes and your instincts tell you that Manny is different from other fighters. No level of training would produce a fighter like Pacquiao. The task is to separate the dosages of nature and nurture and to decipher what remains. That is not an easy task.

Meanwhile, Marco Antonio Barrera was training in high altitude mountains and reportedly getting himself in his best shape ever in preparation for a fight with huge implications for him: it’s not just a revenge fight for MAB (who lost to Pacman in 2003); it’s also possibly the last fight of his Hall-of-Fame career. Clearly, the Baby-Faced-Assassin has left no stone unturned in his preparation for this fight. There will be no excuses, other than old age, in his corner on fight night.

Pacman, though, seems to have approached training for this fight like a doctor treating a patient without insurance: Ignore it for long enough and perhaps it will go away. But it will not. Even if he beats MAB, fans and doubters alike will question his devotion.

Pacquiao is lucky, though. His trainer was willing to fly to the Philippines and train him there. Roach thought that Manny was perhaps testing him. He was well aware that Dedham Freddie went to Puerto Rico to train Oscar de la Hoya for his showdown with Floyd Mayweather, Jr. So perhaps he wanted Roach to prove he would go that extra mile for him as well. Well, he did. And he wasn’t too happy about it.

Pacquiao’s overwhelming popularity in the Philippines made it difficult for Roach to train Pacman in private. Roach noted that he was wary of all of the distractions and pleaded with the fans to stay away from training sessions for Manny’s sake. In the wake of it all, he claimed to be happy with Manny’s progress. He was confident that Pacman was well prepared for the fight. They would continue training at Wild Card before heading to Las Vegas for the fight.

Reportedly, when Roach was able to get Pacquiao’s undivided attention, he saw the same amazing qualities that he’s always seen in the southpaw whirlwind. He saw a guy that, when driven, was able to give more than anyone he’s seen. There is not another fighter in the business like Pacquiao. Lack of focus is not a new phenomenon for Pacman. Perhaps it was a bigger issue for him than in the past, but he has dealt with it before. Nature overcoming nurture.

Speaking of nurturing your gifts: Allen Iverson hates practice. Yet he is perhaps the most well conditioned athlete in the NBA. He perpetually leads the league in minutes played and plays at a breakneck pace that no one else on the floor can keep up with. Manny Pacquiao is very much like that. Both are easily distracted free spirits whose interests are spread thin at times. Yet, in “game” situations they are flurries of activity that the opposition cannot be prepared for. They compete with passion that opponent cannot match. They approach other activities with the same passion and thus easily distracted. But it would be foolish to look past what they actually bring to the table in the heat of the moment. There is no way to recreate fighting Pacquaio (or guarding Iverson) with any kind of sparring. MAB has trained in mountains and gotten himself in great shape. That does not prepare you for Pacman. Not by a long shot.

MAB has a chance, sure. But give me Pacman in this one. The lesson that’s never taught in school, but is reinforced on the playground (and in the White House) every day is that doing your homework doesn’t give you all the answers.

Sooner or later, Pacman’s ways will catch up to him. But not yet.

Readers, what do you think? Does Marco Antonio Barrera have what it takes to defeat a somewhat off-task Pacquiao? Did Pacman make a mistake training in the Philippines?

*Barry Bonds:  Corrie Sanders golfs professionally. Tiger Woods is not an athlete? Enough said. Golf and boxing are both sports.

dan:  that is exactly why he wont fight joan guzman becuase manny is great but he is not dedicated enough at this point in his carreer to beat guzmans talent speed and dedication. of course he chose the older opponent with a payday over someone who at this point in time would be a much better fight. no disrespect to mab he was great but his time is over.

junior:  To tell you the truth PACMAN had all the qualities of a good and talented boxer. But he also acquire the talent of being a good businessman, he knows how to sell himself. You will finally accept right after the fight that MANNY is really a good boxer of our time. He came from MINDANAO where people used to eat what MEXICAN eat, CORN, for energy. MAB would finally admit that MANNY is a good boxer, like what his fellow Mexican had found out in boxing with MANNY.

Paul Taylor:  Golf as a "sport", Barry? Get real. Two words: John Daly. Enough said.
Friday Oct 5, 2007
Niko:  Pacman is the King of Hearts. A half trained Pacquiao is still much more than a "mountain" trained Barrera (at this stage of his carreer!!!). Manny wins easily.
Friday Oct 5, 2007
btk:  I agree with Paul. John Daly is Exhibit A as to why golf is NOT a sport. And Exhibit B is the sad state of the heavyweight division when a pro golfer, Corrie Sanders, knocked out the consensus best out there (Wladimir Klitschko).

Radam G:  Enough of the chit chatter! Manny is the MAN! The Baby-faced-Assassin is in trouble. Separate Assassin and you get "Ass Ass in." MAB's Ass ass (is) in trouble. Just called Manny PacMan or the MINDANAO MAULER. He is going to maul MAB. And PacMan may just use the famous Filipino BOLO PUNCH. For those who don't know, the Bolo punch was invented and first used by Filipinos, not by Kid Galvan. Matter of fact, Kid Galvan ripped the punch off from a Pinoy sparring partner. I know by writing this a lot of "DON'T KNOWER are going to call me racist or stupid because they don't anything, including how to research the truth. I just hope the PacMan use the BOLO PUNCH just once. Filipino pride and PINOY POWER, Talaga -- up here in the house. Pity on MAB. Good night, sweet prince. Manny in 9 or 10! See ya!

Flippinout:  I disagree with you dan. Pac is not afraid to fight Guzman. He publicly states that he'll fight anyone, anywhere. Boxing is business. Guzman is low risk low reward. He is not marketable at the big fight level. Thus business decisions are not indicative of Pac not being dedicated to his boxing career. Pac is no fool. He knows what aspect of his career butters his bread.

richard:  yo manny is not distracted uknow watch tomorrow well see if your barrerra wat ever he is gonna get knock out ok so think about me tomorrow if manny will win ok all the pilipino we be praying for him so barrera watch uot we gonna give u wat u want the marco bolo ok so think about me tommorrow cause the manny gonna win all the way ok peac
Friday Oct 5, 2007
Allen:  Manny strives on organized chaos. Accept that fact!
Friday Oct 5, 2007
Ordinary Boxing Fan:  Flippinout hit it right. You have to offer the best offer there is. That is the business side of boxing. Beating your opponent to prove you are the best becomes secondary. I also would love to see Guzman-Pacquiao. But for the fight to be made, it has to be financially attractive. If Pacquiao will receive some million dollars for the Barrera fight, why would he fight Guzman for less? I think that's how boxing is run today.
Friday Oct 5, 2007
richard:  yo man if the price is right uknow yo but will win tomorrow so barrerra watch out we gonna make a history tomorrow watch barrerra gonna get tired tommorrow so if you putting your money i fell sorry for yall so manny will win that for sure aight dont hate on the man he fighting for his country not like other right there this my fight is personal yeah knock out tommorrow thatsd wass up go manny go manny

cbh78:  pac may be the overwhelming fave here, but MAB's intelligent and still a dangerous guy. MAB won't fight the pac the way he fought juarez. he won't have enough stamina to last 12 rounds with a typhoon named pac. he's seen how JMM handled MP, he's seen the MP-Morales 1, and knows the pac can be beat. he will surprise pac by taking the offensive early, hopefully taking away MP's vaunted ko act. hopefully too, this will agitate MP into being careless. he will then wait in ambush for a counterpunch the way donaire bludgeoned the unbeaten darchinyan. as sugar ray said, it's all about one big punch. MAB knows his only chance to beat pac is by early ko. if he can't floor MP by the 5th, MP will smother him.
Friday Oct 5, 2007
nandi:  Barrera trained in the highlands, PacMan trained beside the sea. Does it matter??? With PacMan---No. Whether he trains in Wild Card or RWS gym, he'll be fine. If you are a doubter, wait a few hours and you will know, too!!!
Friday Oct 5, 2007
Marco Antonio:  Joan who????
Friday Oct 5, 2007
nong:  Guzman had not proven anything yet. hahahaHA. He should first fight Valero before aiming his sights on Pacman. I agree with Flippinout! Boxing is not some kind of an ego-bursting activity, it's a business. No promoter would love to do Pacquiao-Guzman, it's not marketable as of this time. Guzman must prove something first before shooting for the moon.
Friday Oct 5, 2007
Sodamn Insane:  Pacman will fight anyone but the promoters decide for Pacman JMM and MAB will get average earnings Soto, Guzman , Valero bellow average earnings Juan Diaz Mega earnings Katsidis bellow average earnings Ricky Hatton Mega earnings Mayweather Mega earnings Pacmans earning potential will be with Mayweather
Friday Oct 5, 2007
jersey devil:  pac is the cream of the crop at junior lightweight! guzman beat barrios but barrios is someone whom pac can easily deck in 4 rounds.. it happens that when a fighter gets too good,we always look for someone to beat the crap outta him...we always look for someone fresher...stronger..newer..faster just like what happened to barrera... we shouldnt let his legacy pass us by.. being defeated by pac doesnt defeat the purpose of him being one of the greatest of all time... its like this...we are amused by david blaine's magic or cris angel's but lets not forget david copperfield!!
Friday Oct 5, 2007
balotskie:  Galing ng arguments niyo! Radam, nice one. Pacman in 1 or 6!
Friday Oct 5, 2007
Chris:  You know Mike, I really like that part when you compared Manny with Iverson. It's true. No matter how we try to measure athletes by using stats, comparative analysis, etc, there are some boxers like Pacquiao who are simply exeptions to the rule. It's not that Pacman can win without training, but most often than not, he will be able to overcome distractions by his inborn gift of punching power and athleticism. There are some things that you can't teach, and that's what separates Pacquiao from other boxers.
Friday Oct 5, 2007
jeremy:  solis is not marketable either! why did pac fought solis, coz its easy for him thats all,pac is not fighting anyone that is more deadlier than him,its a cowardly act but it works on the pocket right!
Friday Oct 5, 2007
von:  manny fought solis because he had no other choice back then. If he did, this fight with barrera would have been staged months ago! pacman is not a coward. blame arum for their fight with jorge solis.
Friday Oct 5, 2007
louie:  pac look skinny to me remind me of e morales his face look like he never eat mab will target his tommy and he drop like the golden boy vs. the executioner, mab has a chance and all pinoy will be sad. prediction 50-50
Friday Oct 5, 2007
basag ulo:  pacman will knock him out in 3rd round.... this fight is simple for manny...the great fight is manny against manuel marquez....
Saturday Oct 6, 2007
spuds691:  yeah.. and..they said morales had a chance..before his last fight with manny..FUNNY!!!

Saturday Oct 6, 2007
jomijomz:  theres a way to defeat manny... barrera should display beautiful ringside girls yealling pacmans name. in that way pac will surely loose focus on mab, in the end pac would go down on the canvass and still excited to meet the girls... it sounds funny but it can be true, pac is very weak when it comes to beautiful girls... hahaha..
Saturday Oct 6, 2007
Sycuan Promotion:  I LIKE JOAN GUZMAN, HE'LL BEAT THE HELL OUT OF THE OVERRATED PACMAN! EVEN IF PACMAN WINS TOMORROW, I KNOW HE'S STILL NOT AS GOOD AS YOU THINK! BUT I STIL THINK BARRERA STILL HAS A TRICK OR TWO UP HIS SLEEVES TO GIVE MANNY A GOOD REAL BEATING!... SO BETTER WATCH-OUT PAC-NUTHUGGERS!
Saturday Oct 6, 2007
jake:  i like MAB,.,.,.he"s still a legendary fighter and no douts for that,.,.he can knock out anybody,.,..but not with manny and my heart belongs to manny,.,.
Saturday Oct 6, 2007
john ro:  i think pacquiao will lose this one thugh a KO form MAB
Saturday Oct 6, 2007
triple x:  i agree, pacman will lose this time. It is because talent cannot beat heart and experience.

hototai:  "mab will target his tommy and he drop like the golden boy vs. the executioner, mab has a chance and all pinoy will be sad. " ei, louie don't you know that pac receives a lot of hits in his stomach (with a japanese stick,i dnt knw what to call it) on his practices? thats how hard his stomach is.. MAB was once the best on this division but not anymore, its just like a tv show it rans out of good episodes but it doesn't mean that they're not good. its just how the cycle goes. PAC will also face his defeats but not in his prime.. MAB, tnx 4 d memories!! u still have the respect of the filipinos its just that PAC is a really different fighter. we love you and erik for the good boxing tactics, you we're both great legends but PAC is a really hard to explain he's a freak of nature.. he (mab) better accept that PAC is a better boxer no lets just say that he's technique is not right to defeat PAC, like erik did. and what happened erik was not treated as a joke in the philippines, we feel sorry for his lost and admired him for being true to hisself..

addie:  panalo na si pacquiao!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! pacquiao will surely win!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Saturday Oct 6, 2007
jose victor:  all arguements are true, PACMAN is in his prime, and no one can challenges him in his division, but history always a good lessons to tell, how many gifted boxers we had in Phillipines that after having millions, they are distracted ang getting KOs, PACMAN should be aware of that, and focus on his devine talent, He has a lot more to give, politics, etc., are not suited for him. Boxing give him millions, politics will take his millions...

Playing Matchmaker: Williams/Cotto, Pavlik/Abraham Winners Meet
"I wouldn't mind paying 50 dollars for a Paul Williams /Miguel Cotto fight with Margarito/Clottey in the undercard. Or Jermain Taylor/Paul Williams with a fight between Kelly Pavlik/Arthur Abraham on the same night. A set up like that would be good for boxing 'cause the fans would see four good fighters in one night and possibly see the two winners fight in the near future.Too bad boxing doesn't think about the fans the way fans think about boxing." ---TSS reader Arturo plays matchmaker
