Newsflash: De La Hoya To Fight Again, At 147

HBO's living legend, analyst Larry Merchant, told viewers that Oscar De La Hoya has decided to drop back down to the welterweight division, boxing's richest talent mine, after spending the last six years campaigning as a middleweight and junior middleweight.
The last time De La Hoya, age 34, fought at 147 pounds was back in 2001, when he defeated Arturo Gatti, in Las Vegas (TKO5).
Merchant broke the newsbreak after he watched Paul Williams outwork Antonio Margarito in California as part of HBO's enjoyable tripleheader, as the new kid on the analysis block, Max Kellerman, worked the color seat next to Bob Papa in Atlantic City.
The Golden Boy, entering his old age in boxing years, weighed 154 pounds in losing a decision to Floyd Mayweather on May 5th. He is 2-3 in his last five fights, or 1-4 if you think Felix Sturm beat him in their summer 2004 scrap, as I do.
Merchant says that Oscar is walking the streets in the low 150s, and he thinks he should close his career at the same weight class he ruled from 1997-2001.
Readers, is Oscar making sense?
Can he make that weight, and even if he does, can he hang with the young bucks who rule the weight class?
I shudder to see Williams keeping him at bay, and pecking away at him.
But word is maybe Oscar will get it on with Hatton, who I don't believe can hurt him.
Certainly, this pairing makes $ense...

First of all, ODLH will not travel to England to fight Hatton. It will be done on his terms in Las Vegas. Secondly, I think this fight will happen because Hatton is much less effective at 147 than 140, and therefore it's winnable for ODLH. And it does make $ense. But I think Hatton should stay put at 140, his optimum weight. At 147, I think Oscar loses to Floyd (obviously), Mosely, Cotto, Williams, Margarito, Cintron, and Andre Berto. So truthfully, this breaking news flash means very little in my opinion.

o BS perry , ODLH is a great fighter who fights the best in the sport and wins ome and loses some, welterweight will be his best weight and he has the power to knock out cotto who does not take punches well , hatton would be a good hard fight and oscar has said he would indeed go to manchester to fight him because he knows it will generate more money. But it is not hte best fight for boxing as it is a small guy versus a big guy , for credibility oscar's best shot is to fight cotto , williams would beat him easily , but cotto is winnable

1. At first the article said Oscar lost to Floyd by unanimous decision so ignore my first comment..
2. Sidney there is NO interest in watching Gatti fight anyone, ever again. He didn't even sell out Boardwalk Hall in his own hometown against Gomez and his career is defined by a trilogy with an average fighter (Ward).
Why does Oscar continue to get props for his "heart"? He won't fight anyone capable of hurting him and he has zero chance against bigger guys anyway. He's to worried about keeping his face pretty to get grimey with Floyd and he quit on a bodyshot from BHop. His fans think he is a legend for beating Mayorga and Vargas.

OK...ODLH vs Gatti? Is that a serious comment? I rather sit through another episode of the Rocky saga. Let's focus here. Oscar gave a good fight against Mayweather Jr who is undoubtedly the best pound for pound fighter in the world. Oscar could fight any of those welters and make it a great and possibly historic night for boxing. No doubt in my mind, Oscar needs to start with Hatton and work from there. Mind you, Ricky "The Hitman" Hatton is no push over. I also think he could create some major problems for Margarito and Williams but should be cautious to step in the ring with the other big dogs in the division. Though Oscar IS a legend and future Hall of Famer, we must remember that at 34, he's starting to hit the sunset of his brilliant career.

Who cares about what DLH does from here-on-out? I saw the Felix Strum fight and Strum beat DLH. He's 1-4 in my book, he'll have trouble making 147 and will lose to one of these young, hungry fighters. DLH may want to fight Cintron sense out of the 4 beltholders he may be the weakest link. But he don't want Cotto, PBF again or Williams.

I think Oscar has a great shot against anyone at 147...the man has been fighting the big names at 154-160...more power and with his boxing skills it makes sense. As for facing Hatton, the Hugman Hatton would get crushed, Oscar is too big. Oscar can compete with all of them at 147...but with the recent Top Rank-GBP truce the writing on the wall is for a HUGE-MASSIVE PPV next Cinco de Mayo, the rivalry continues in the ring Mexico vs Puerto Rico - De La Hoya vs Cotto.......

DLH is definately a bit slower now that he's older. Yet, he is still a very intelligent fighter with experience on his side. Could he still hang in this talent stacked division? I think it's possible, but at this stage i'd rather see more of the current movers and shakers. Oscar is still extreamly marketable, however, and the politics dictate. Regardless, more great bouts are in the works.

Oscar hit Floyd with his best punch and NOTHING happened! If they fought again Floyd would stop Oscar and the golden girl knows it!

Look at DeLaHoya's Resume.... it speaks for itself. He has taken on all challengers at or around his weight. He would easily k.o. Cotto. Cotto was on Queer Street with Corley and Torres touched his chin. Oscar is way beyond there level.
Hatton said Collazo hurt him at 147... I'm sure DeLaHoya would stop him as well.
People dont give Oscar his due because of his looks... But the man has skills... Fought the pound for pound #1 fighter and lost a split decision after being inactive for almost a year...

drios, I agree with the things you most said. You're right that DLH resume is pretty bright and you see his career is a bright one as well, but his career has many many flaws too. He fought JC Chavez when he was past his prime. There's no question what would of happen if Chavez was at his best. The Pernell Whitaker result is a doubtful one. True, in my opinion he defeated Trinidad, but not as a true fighter should of fought. He defeated Vargas when the 'Ferocious' was already destroyed by Trinidad. He won against Mosley the second time, but to me he he got his butt whooped agaist Felix Sturm. The KO against
B-Hop, I really don't know if he was really hurt or if he was looking for a career in Hollywood. He defeated Mayorga, another fighter Trinidad already smashed, and lost to P4P best Pretty Boy Floyd. Oscar was a good fighter, but to me he was and still is overrated. He has a good fight still left in him though.

I reall think Oscar defeated Mayweather cause if u saw the fight, I really dont know how he won when really all he did was run through out the whole fight. idont think he will want a rematch because they will probably do the same thing as they did when won the second fight with Mosely and they still gave it to Mosely.

Yea, a lot of guys in here aren't giving Oscar his props. Of course he isn't the best boxer of his time, but he is certainly in the top 3 of his class. I believe as many others do that he beat Mosely in the 2nd fight for sure and possible should have won the first one too. If the decisions would have went the other way, which they didn't but should have, hes really only lost to the best boxer of this time (Mayweather), which neither really won, Tito and a bigger guy, Hopkins. There are still some of the big boys out there he can take if he wants to win and he probably does because many more losses and he won't be making that money anymore.
