Roach Talks PacMan, Barrera, Marquez, Guzman
By Mike Lynch
Now that Golden Boy and Top Rank seem to have settled their dispute (at least long enough to cash in on a mutually lucrative bout), Manny Pacquiao (44-3-2, 35 KOs) is lined up to battle Marco Antonio Barrera (63-5, 42 KOs) on October 6 in Las Vegas. This will be the first fight under the new arrangement between Top Rank and Golden Boy which allows for some split promotional work. We can only hope that the new settlement will lead to a future where the best matches are made without consideration given to a fighter’s promotional affiliation.
---On a side note, I can’t help but find it hilarious that, in a way, Manny’s double-dealing (he signed contracts with both) inadvertently helped solve this dispute by lending a sense of urgency to settling the matter. PacMan’s actions were either slick as a snake or completely naïve, but whatever his intentions were, it seems that justice has been served to the victim: the fans.
But nobody reads this page because they enjoy legal issues. Anytime fighters like PacMan, 28, and Barrera, 33, take the ring it’s big news in these parts. Back in 2003, I’m sure that many of you remember Pacquiao’s 11th round TKO victory. According to PacMan’s trainer Freddie Roach, “Barrera has been wanting a rematch for a couple of years.”
Several weeks ago there was heated discussion here on our message boards pertaining to whom Manny should take on next: The main candidates were MAB, 33-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez (47-3-1, 35 KOs), and Joan Guzman (27-0, 17 KOs). The most popular pick seemed to be JMM who scored a unanimous decision over the Baby Faced Assassin for his WBC Super Featherweight title back in March. JMM also battled PacMan to a draw in 2004 despite tasting the canvas three times in the first round.
So why Barrera?
Roach dismissed talk of JMM making outrageous payment split demands (though they possibly still played a part). To Roach the equation was simple: “Barrera draws a bigger audience than Marquez,” he noted. Top Rank and Golden Boy might be collaborating, but hell hasn’t frozen over in its entirety. This is still boxing and it’s still a business. If it makes dollars, it makes sense. That grim reality holds, but this is still a great match-up.
Roach pointed out that this could be Barrera’s last fight and that he expects to see the Mexican veteran at his best. “Barrera’s durable. He’s a tough guy and you can’t take anybody too lightly in this game,” said Roach.
He believes that Manny has arrived as a two fisted fighter since their first match-up (and some of PacMan’s opponents would probably swear he’s tri-fisted), but still sees a battle. “I’m sure Barrera would love to go out a winner, but I believe we will get to him late,” he predicted.
As for Marquez?
“After this fight, we have no problem taking on Marquez,” claimed Roach, while he also admitted that, “His style gave us some problems in the first fight.”
For now, JMM is slated to square off against Jorge Barrios (47-3-1, 34 KOs) on September 15. If he and Manny win, as they are expected to, that would make for a highly anticipated rematch.
But what about Guzman?
Roach quipped, “If you listen to Floyd Mayweather, Sr., he’s invincible. But he’s a real strong guy and might be one of the toughest fights out there.”
But he’s also not a big enough name to make sense for PacMan at this point. Fans might be frothing for such a match-up, but Roach’s sentiment was that Guzman’s got to work his way up a little more before he gets a shot at the Filipino southpaw.
You know what they say in boxing: If it don’t make dollars it don’t make sense. Or something like that…
Speedbag: Roach also noted that Pacquiao would consider a match-up with Humberto Soto (42-5-2, 26 KOs) in the future. Manny was in the house when Soto KO’d PacMan’s younger brother, Bobby, on June 9 at Madison Square Garden. Despite the 5 losses, Soto is well-seasoned and unbeaten in the ring since he lost a 2002 decision to Kevin Kelley. Apparently, Manny wouldn’t mind exacting some revenge for his little bro…….Pacquiao will begin training camp with Roach on August 1 in Hollywood.

I hope that Mr. Arum decides to bring Manny to the Bay Area.It would be a great location with it's very large Asian and Pacific Islander population. It's Cali,so you can't forget the Boxing Die-Hard Latino population would also support any great fights made there.Even PBF managed to sell quite a few Tix in San Fran.Hopefully Bob will keep spreading the Boxing gospel, the less Casino fights the better.

Although most fight fans would love to see a Pac-JMM bout, I believe Barrera deserves a rematch first with Pacquiao before he retires. Still, one has to think if MAB is already contented with a decision loss to Marquez. I mean, he should also settle that in the near future.

I hope one day but not too long to wait Manny will have a fight here in Vancouver, B.C., Canada. I don't care "WHO" he will fight coz they will all get TKO anaway. I firmly believe that I am not the only one out of close to 150,000 Filipinos living here in B.C. are longing for this. I hope I am not HOPELESS...

I also like the Bay Area and would love to see a major fight there. However, a championship fight involving Pacquiao and someone like Marquez or Guzman has got to be in Staples Center in Los Angeles. "SoCal" has a significant number of Filipinos' that would love to see that fight. Not to mention the overwhelming support of Mexicans' for Juan Manuel Marquez and Pacquiao alike. I remember the hype and excitement around here when De La Hoya fought Shane Mosley at the same venue. Imagine the countless numbers of Filipinos' and Mexicans' cheering wildly for their respective fighters. It would be a raucous crowd that night!!! I agree that fights should not automatically be in a casino venue. They should bring it back to the old days when major fights took place at stadiums in New York and Los Angeles.

This marriage between GBP and Top Rank is heaven sent. Now we can watch quality and great fights not only involving Pacquiao but all the other fighters under both promotional outfits. I wish that Pacquiao will fight JMM next, then Guzman, Valero and if Fana will still be champion after all these fights, he too can fight Manny. I want that all alphabet bodies will have one champion. Then Manny can fight the lightweights.

Well, this rematch between The Pacman and Barrera has been 4 years in the making... Why Barrera waited this long to get a rematch? You're guess is as good as mine. Anyhow, Barrera wants to end his carrer in boxing with a BANG. Pacman shouldn't take Barrera lightly. Goodluck to both of them. The next fight I would want Manny to have is against JMM.This time around, JMM won't be saved by an aging, alzheimer-ridden judge.

I don't think Marco Antonio Barrera will retire after his second fight with Manny Pacquiao. Erik Morales said the same thing (retirement) twice but then he lost his last two fights against Pacquiao. Now he's back in the ring. Pride will be at stake. Even if Barrera wins against Pacquiao (not that I don't have big faith in our wonder boy Manny), he still has a score to settle with Juan Manuel Marquez. If Barrera is itching for a rematch with Pacquiao who knocked him out, how much more for Marquez who only outpointed him? He wouldn't leave the sport getting suffocated with the idea that he could have retained his title. Anyway, I'm just happy that Golden Boy and Top Rank are friends once again. After Barrera, Marquez is up next for Pacquiao. Just in case Marquez forgot, he got floored three times in the first round alone by a one-dimensional fighter. Now that Pacquiao is a two-fisted (some fighters agree that he's three-fisted) fighter, for sure Marquez won't beat the count this time. - Medeon Maraon

I agreed with Brewmaster, fights need to be brought back to the Great Western Forum in Inglewood, Staples Center and now the Home Depot Center in Carson. That venue is perfect for outdoor boxing by the way, I will be in attendance for the Margarito - Williams fight July 14th at that venue. As for the fight? I think it will be a great night for boxing, I cant wait to see who the undercards are. GOOD LUCK TO BOTH FIGHTERS. VIVA MEXICO!!

We threat manny as a superstar but when he lost to the cong. race he was really badly beaten, out and down. Kawawa. Nawala tuloy yung respect ng iba.
In this world, you can not have everything in your life.
Sayang dapat ibinigay niya sa mahirap na katulad ko yung sabi sabing 100 million pesos na ginastos niya sa election.
This is a big lesson not only for him but to everybody.

I have a weird prediction about the upcoming fight of pacquiao and barrera, but yet possible. After barrera will become a loser again against pacman, I think this second time around mexican fans were used already to this kind of fight with pacman, and for sure this is not a shame anymore as far as barrera and mexican fans are concerned. Marquez, Morales, Solis and a lot more - Barrera is not alone anymore and much easier to accept it than the first. So pacman is still the winner at the end. And expect for a Morales-Barrera 4, but I suggests they will fight each other in light weight division because the super featherweight division is the territory of pacman already.

Pacman vs. Barrera in August; Marrquez vs. Barrios in September. How about Valero vs. De Guzman? Or Soto vs. Valero? Or De Guzman vs. Soto? Common guys you don't have to wait Manny's availability just to prove how great you are. You want to fight with Manny because of money and no other else because fighting with Manny win or loss is more sense financially than risking career with small money in the pocket.

you flip have one good fighter and think you own the world, mexican have dominated boxing with the blacks americans for a long time, remebers Salvador Sanchez, Pipino Cuevas, Ricardo Finito Lopes, and the Great Julio Cesar Chavez who was undefeated for the first 90 fights, how can you compare any of youre flips fighters with the mexican greats, Pacman already lost 4 of fight fight, Ricardo Lopes was a master technician who retired undefeated, he was trained by the same trainer that trains the Marquez brothers, now thats a real good trainer not like like roach who all of his fighters are loosing like del la Hoya, Pac JR, Toney, and the one who lost to Marquez JR. Pacman is a wild boxer and Barrera is gonna take him to school, REMEBER MEXICO HAS A LONG TRADITION WITH BOXERS JUST LOOK AT THE HALL OF FAME, WERE YOU WOULD NOT ONE FILIPINO FIGHTER IN THERE. AND PLEASE DONT COMPARE THE TWO NATIONS, SINCE MEXICO IS THE 13 BIGGEST ECONOMY IN THE WORLD Y THE FILIPINES IS JUST ONE SMALL ISLAND.

Pac-man needs to get in there with Younger Contenders. MA Barrera can not rumble as he once did, I think he is fadding and will find himself in a Morales like situation ( e.i. 2 or 3rd vs Manny). JMM is also not as sharp as he used to be, and I don't think Manny will find his style as difficult as the 1st bout.
I would prefer to see Manny with a prime contender as Humberto Soto, Joan Guzman, Edwin Valero.

i've notice that pacman fights the loser, what i mean is after morales was beaten by mab and zahir, here's pacman vs morales. after marquez beats barrera, now pacman fights the loser again. i don't emagine how pacman consider the best, in fact he has no legit world champs belt. he's fighting what is left. he should fight first jmm b4 mab so he has the title to defend. some boxers want to be a world champ and to be recognize as the best in the world by winning this belts from wbc, ibf, wba, wbo. where's pacman belong now? still in the ranking. how long?...pls. remembers this some boxers mayweather, dela hoya, hopkins, tyson, lewis and many more who defended their belts many times and recognized as best in the world and a hall of fame.i think its different feelings if your pacman has this belts. i don't think it is more important to fight the best for $. i know money is there anytime pacs fights bcoz he's very excitement fighter and loves to trade leathers.

For Manny Pacquiao. I believe that a real good fight for him is no other than Juan Manuel Marquez. Marco Antonio Barrera had already lost to him, so why is it barrera again?
This is simple. He did not win for Marquez yet and marquez also is the real champion in this feather weight division.
I believe that marquez is the king of this weight division.
It make sense right? Common guys.!
Marquez is very tough and to give the people a real fight and for money worth then lets do this fight again.

I think after the fight with MAB and JMM Pacman should move up in weight if all goes well. If anyone remembers Manny fought at 147 in the last match with Morales. I just found out after watching it again that he was fighting like a welterweight. And he looked just as fast at that weight, if so he will move up in weight he can clash with PBF and I think that can be his fight that can seal his career. But it takes a few years to see this happen. Pacman, just stick to what you're good at and we'll see you in the HALL OF FAME with the greats.
One last thing, Boxing fans should watch the lower weight classes because that's where the great fights are. They are the one's that are going to save boxing.

This is for Pacman Manny Pacquaio and to promoters of the fights. This is funny! This is not worth fight. Manny has dismantled Barrera already so why come this rediculous rematch happen again. The best for Manny is Juan Manuel Marquez. The first fight between this two guys is a draw. In the first fight everybody knows that marquez was knockdown in the first round 3 times and survive by winning the points for the next several rounds until the last. If Marquez was not knockdown in the first round difinitely Marquez will gonna win at that fight.
I think Pacquaio is afraid of Juan Manuel Marquez and also the promoters are just like making fights for money but not worth for the fans that loves boxing. Take a look at Pacman website everybody wants Pacman and Juan Manuel Marquez to fight again. It make sense right? Common sense man!
If October 6 is the schedule fight for the rematch between Barrera And Pacman then I will not be surprised if most people wont like to watch the PPV. Again this fight is nothing.

Well, it's like this. Manny is good, and yes, he's been fighting Mexicans who have large fan followings. But hey, Mexicans, don't monopolize boxing. There certainly are a lot of non-Mexican boxing greats. I'd say, put in a valero or a Guzman to fight Pacquiao, then we have a good fight to watch out for. Mexicans are just lucky because they have easy access to the USA which makes them the "hottest" fighters in the lower wight divisions. But the Mexican Warrior thing??? Pffffft. Any race who goes into the squared circle could be a warrior. Mexican Warriors are myths. Reality bites you know.

Pacman vs mab2 is alright. But I prefer jmm vs pacman2. Then mab can get his rematch, Pacman needs a belt to defend. U guys agree?

i think in my own perspective, manny will dominate the superfeatherweight class, nobody cud beat him at this time, maybe he`ll move on to the lightweight division and fight warriors like diego corrales, jose luis castillo, and the brazilian acelino freitas,to prove himself that he`s invincible... anyway, lahat ng mga boxxers, lalaos din, may nkalaan na tym para sa kanilang downfall, di lang natin alam kung kelan,,, at nasisiguro ko, na malapit na yung dumating kay MANNY PACMAN PAQUIAO..

Angie And Goody...23 Years Later
Twenty three years later after they seconded Marvin Hagler and Ray Leonard in Las Vegas, Goody Petronelli and Angelo Dundee crossed paths again. This time, it was at Foxwoods. Photo/friend of TSS "The Iceman" John Scully reports there were only pleasantries exchanged. Goody didn't debate the split decision victory enjoyed by Leonard, which to this day Hagler disputes.
