Old, But Not In The Way
"I did some researching. Hopkins is the oldest light heavy -- at 41 -- to ever win a respected sanctioning organization title belt. However, his hero, the late great, Archie "The Old Mongoose" Moore would have him beat, if Archie didn't lie about his age so much. Archie's boxing age when he won won his belt was 36. He official age -- listed on his passport -- was 39. But his actual age was 43, according to his mother, in 1953, and his aunt -- at the time 100 years old -- in 1991. I spoke to Archie in 1995 in San Diego, Ca., and he confirmed 43. I asked him why did he lie about his age, and he said age was held against a fighter more than color." ---TSS reader/citizen-journalist Radam likens Hopkins to Ole Archie
