Corrales had a killer smile, to go with his killer finishing instinct.

RIP, Diego Corrales

By Michael Woods

Former world champion Diego "Chico" Corrales, who engaged in one of the most memorable come-from-behind wins in boxing history, died in a motorcycle crash Monday night in Las Vegas. He was 29 years old.

"He crashed on a motorcycle," his manager, James Prince, told ESPN.com's Dan Rafael. "It don't look like he made it through this. He's dead."

Corrales was born August 25, 1977.

He grew up in Sacramento, California, and managed to refashion his life, away from a budding interest in juvenile misbehavior, and debuted as a professional boxer in 1996.

He stood 5-11 but looked lankier than that as he made a name for himself in the super featherweight division. He earned the IBF super featherweight crown, his first major title, with a TKO victory over Roberto Garcia on October 23, 1999.

Corrales last fought on April 7, losing a unanimous decision to Joshua Clottey in Springfield, Missouri.

The heavy hitter, who finishes with a career mark of 40-5 (33 KOs) will be forever recalled as a stout-hearted warrior who dished out punishment fiercely. He, too, would sometimes take a wallop on the chin, and hit the canvas, but Corrales showed a warrior's stubbornness in defeat.

In his May 7, 2005 battle with Jose Luis Castillo, Corrales was sent to the canvas twice via left hooks in the tenth round. But he rose both times, and after the second knockdown, with his left eye swollen nearly shut, he returned fire.

He dazed Castillo with a right, and followed up with a savage professionalism. Corrales pressed forward, pinning Castillo on the ropes with a furious barrage, and the referee Tony Weeks stepped in and halted the bout. It was the fight of the year in 2005, and will stand as one of the most improbable turnarounds in fortune for the ages.

Corrales lost a rematch with Castillo, five months later, in a scrap overshadowed by Castillo's weight woes.

A planned tiebreaker with Castillo fell out, as Castillo again couldn't make the lightweight limit. But Corrales fought on. He dropped a decision to Joel Casamayor, his third match with the well-schooled Cuban,  in his next appearance, on October 7, 2006. He had his own difficulty with the scale for this bout, ironically, and chose to make the leap to the welterweight class as a result. The bout with Clottey, in which he was knocked down in the ninth and tenth rounds, had fans of the boxer calling for him to exit the game for good.

Corrales, a Hall of Fame cinch, had the opportunity to climb high on pound for pound lists when he accepted a challenge to hand Floyd Mayweather Jr. his first loss, on January 20, 2000. But Corrales' head wasn't fully on the task at hand, as he was facing jail time for assaulting his wife, Maria, who was pregnant at the time. He was convicted, and sentenced to two years jail time. Mayweather knocked Corrales to the floor five times, and "Chico" was stopped in the tenth round. Corrales then served 14 months in a state facility.

His career arc took a turn for the better after the incarceration. On October 4, 2003, bleeding profusely from the mouth, he was stopped by Casamayor. But five months later, he edged out the Cuban, snagging a split decision win.

Corrales followed that outing by handing Brazilian Acelino Freitas his first loss, on August 7, 2004.

Then came the classic with Castillo, which is certain to remain a YouTube staple for decades. Corrales' refusal to stay down, his unwillingness to cave in to seemingly insurmountable odds, was on full display on this night, and will serve as his epitaph in video for perpetuity.

NOTE: The memorial service for Diego "Chico" Corrales, 29, has been rescheduled for Tuesday, May 15, at the Palm Green Valley Mortuary  (7600 South Eastern Ave., Las Vegas, NV 89123) http://www.palmmortuary.com/map_green.htm.  The public viewing will be from 9 A.M. to Noon PT with the funeral service, conducted by Richard Steele, beginning at Noon.  Burial will be immediately following the service.

A two-division world champion,  Corrales (40-5, 33 KOs), was killed in a motorcycle crash Monday evening in Las Vegas.  It was the second anniversary of his epic lightweight title unification victory over Jose Luis Castillo.

steven mcculloch:  absolutely devastated.only words i can use to describe the sad news of "chico" passing away.there is no doubt in my mind that diego was the best ring warrior that the sport has seen in the last half century.i was getting concerned for diego after his loss to clottey,i thought that it was time for him to hang them up but for him to go out this way is so tragic.my heart goes out to his wife and young familt,"RIP CHICO"

r.i.p:  R.i.p CORRALES A WARRIOR OF BOXING
Tuesday May 8, 2007
D.White:  This is absolutely devastating to me because when you watch a guy go through so many wars and punish his body so much when he could easily fight a safe fight you kind of get attached to him. With all of the bloody punishing fights that he had you would have thought that he was an older fighter who was near retiring but he was only 29! He did so much in such a short time, when Chico came to the ring you knew that you were going to see a hell of a fight win, lose, or draw and he will be greatly missed by the boxing world and it's fans. Boxing might have just taken it's last breath with Diego's passing and Mayweather's retirement. R.I.P. Diego you were a great champion and we'll never forget you. God bless his family he has a very young child who I hope will get to learn about his or her father in time, he was a warrior.

Rios:  My heart felt condolences to the entire Corrales family and Corrales camp. What a great warrior he was in and outside of the ring. I woke up today too see the news on ESPN. It would be a great thing if ESPN could do a segment on Chico and his career inside and outside of the Ring. A great warrior was lost and I think thats the least they could do. I know boxing isnt a main stream sport anymore but I remember seeing Kelvin Winslow's motorcycle accident over and over again and he hasnt proved anything. R.I.P. Chico you will never be forgotten.

paulbo:  His first fight with Castillo gives him an air of immortality, and a deserved one at that. His never-say-die attitude epitomized what the sweet science is all about. He had skills and could use them to great effect, but he also had a warrior's mentality. He was a keeper for the ages.
Tuesday May 8, 2007
Robert Neeley:  This might seem a bit silly ( Since I never met the man personally) But when I read the articles and think of all the great moments in and out the ring that CHICO blessed us with I can't help but cry. And My Prayers are with his entire family AND STILL CHAMPION OF THE WORLD.......

Alex:  I had the pleasure of meeting Diego on a airplane flight from El Paso to Las Vegas, he was promoting what would have been his third fight with Castillo and was eventually canceled due to weight issues with Castillo. When I mentioned to him that my brother and I where huge fans and that my brother would never believe that I had a 45 minute conversation with one of the greatest and definetly most exiting fighters of our time, he took it upon himself to call my brother and say Hi. That is the kind of person Diego was and the only thing that lite his eyes up and brought out that million dollar smile more than talking about boxing was talking about his family. God bless you Diego.

Diane:  What a tragic loss to the sport of boxing. My son turned me on to Diego 'Chico" Corrales.....His eyes just sparkled when he talked about his "Heart" in the ring. Then I seen the 2005 fight and understood.....Not the dog in the fight, the fight in the the dog. You will be missed. God bless Your Family at this time of sorrow . RIP CHICO.
Thursday May 10, 2007
hypknowledge:  i dont remember if it was before or after the first castillo fight that he hinted retiring, either way all fans are fortunate to have that 2005 fight. when castillo didnt make weight for the 2nd fight he chose to go thru with it not wanting to disappoint. and during the post fight interview he didnt want to comment about the weight saying he didnt want to take anything away from castillo's win. THAT and his warrior spirit gained my respect. "Chico" you were one of the realest. R.I.P. god bless your family.
Thursday May 10, 2007
Yvonne:  When I talked about "Boxing Warriors", Diego Corrales was the one I spoke of. The match between Diego & Castillo is the best display of boxing I've seen. I've admired his boxing career for many years & was fortunate to meet him at a Juan Diaz match at Pechanga Casino & Resort in Temecula a few years back. He was very kind to me & with the other fans. Maybe Mayweather & Delahoya should watch Diego fights & learn what a true fight & warrior is. May Diego rest in peace & I will always miss him, but will always remember my favorite boxer. Peace & comfort to his family.

Tommy:  RIP Chico. I hope to one day be a true warrior in the ring, to always want "Just one more round" just like Chico. Every single time I watch the tenth round vs Castillo I get goosebumps, sometimes I just watch the crowd, seeing their reactions. It was legendary, and so was Corrales. Boxing needs more fighters like Corrales, The first boxing match I saw as a kid, years ago, was Corrales fighting, I've been hooked ever since. I even modeled my my fighting style after his. RIP Champ.

Actions Speak So Loudly, Can't Hear What You're Saying
"Here's the problem with Winky, the man has OUTPRICED himself so many times that no one wants to even deal with him any more. Wright believes he's entitled to a fight with Pavlik or Oscar, but come on, a draw with Taylor, and he then refuses to do the rematch, followed by a easy win over Quartey, and then the UGLY fight with B-Hop. No one wants to see him after that. Winky needs to go back to the basics and work his way back to a big fight; sitting on the sidelines crying out for a $ fight ain't the way to do it. Get back in the ring. Actions speak louder than words." ---TSS reader Rudy gives Winky the business
