Manny Pacquiao

Wednesday Nov 15, 2006

After two fights with Morales, Pacquiao knows what “El Terrible” can bring and bring and bring again. And that’s the guy Pacquiao says he’s training for, not the one who might have left most of his fight in the gym.

Manny, Mo and Pac

By Rick Folstad

It was mentioned the other day that while Manny Pacquiao was busy training to fight Erik Morales, Erik Morales wasn’t only busy training to fight Manny Pacquiao. He was also busy training to make weight.

Tough way to make a buck.

Doesn’t seem quite fair to Morales. He’s got two personal demons to deal with, and one of them packs a pretty good wallop and won’t go away with a little sweat.

“Morales is training hard to make weight and training hard to win,” Pacquiao said on a conference call promoting Saturday‘s super-featherweight rubber match with Morales (48-4, 34 KOs) at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas (HBO PPV). “That’s a lot for a fighter to do.”

But Pacquiao (42-3-2, 33 KOs) can’t do much about Morales’ growth spurts or dinner habits. And he sure can’t let it get into his head that Morales might come into the ring Saturday night a tired, drained fighter who already took a standing eight-count in a close win over his weight problem.

Pacquiao should be ready for just the opposite.

But after two fights with Morales , Pacquiao knows that. He knows what “El Terrible” can bring and bring and bring again. And that’s the guy Pacquiao says he’s training for, not the one who might have left most of his fight in little puddles back on the gym floor.

“We worked twice as hard than at any other training camp before,” Pacquiao said. “We’re going to put on a great fight and make the fans happy.”

That’s a pretty safe promise on behalf of Pacquiao.

Morales always shows up for a fight with a chip on his shoulder, a do-or-die look in his eye and a heart the size of a Buick.

And Pacquiao? Promoter Bob Arum calls him the Energizer Bunny because he “just keeps coming and coming and coming, and it’s phenomenal because he never gets tired.”

Well, not that you can notice.

They’re calling the fight “The Grand Finale,” which apparently means there aren’t any immediate plans for Morales-Pacquiao IV.

But that’s probably a good thing. Doesn’t sound like Morales is very fond of continually working his way down to super-feather. I’m thinking “lightweight division” has a pretty good ring to it right about now.

On top of everything else, both these guys have entire nations waiting to party hardy on their behalf. For Morales, who was born in Tijuana, it’s Mexico. For Pacquiao, it’s the Philippines.

Expect some late-night revelers in both countries regardless of who wins.

“Our fight is bigger than the two of us because we carry more into the ring than most other fighters,” said Pacquiao, already a legend in his homeland. “We carry the heart and soul of our people and the pride and honor of our nations. The pressure on us is enormous, which is why I will be on the attack the second I hear the bell for round one.”

More important, a quick attack might also be a smart way to win a big fight.

“I don’t want to give him a little bit of confidence, so I will be testing him early and I will not stop,” Pacquiao said. “I trained hard this time.”

He did it right. He only trained to fight Morales.

Sweet Hitter:  Very nice analysis of what might go down on the fight.

PHILIP:  waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! One does not have to be a scientist to analyze who's going to win...it's a desperate fight for Morales, it's a showdown for Pacquiao. Both fighters know how to punch, but the Pacman hits three times faster and stronger..im betting my life on Pacquiao: 7th round TKO!
Thursday Nov 16, 2006 01:08:36 AM
Ronaldo:  absolutely! ... with PACMAN's speed and power punches, "El Terible" will suffer a TERIBLE farewell fight of his career... Mabuhay ang mga Filipino!!!

barehead:  Manny, you showed much improved lateral movement in the Larios fight. Larios had a hard time trying to hit you with his vaunted right because you knew to step to your right after delivering your own licks. BUT, Morales is another story. He can use both orthodox and southpaw stances, and he might confuse you. You might escape to your right and left and instead be hit with an oncoming power left or right. Please take this up with Roach in case you haven't.

JOEL ENSOY:  With Morales big heart and dedication he may bring upset to pacquiao. But the way i see pacman trains el terrible may suffer a lot and may end up in sideline. EM time is laps and its pacman time to reign. But i still admire the courage of one's truly Pound for Pound figther. "viva el terible" , "mabuhay pacman".

JAWFACEDKENNEL:  Gogogo MANNY . . . Goodluck and Godbless You Always. To manny paquiao, Things to be remember. 1. Dont forget to pray before the fight. (your rosary is very important) 2. Early body attack. 3. Be carefull on headbutt. 4. Be Smart because he is wearing clet reyes gloves. 5. Early TKO is much better so that the world says your the greatest P4P (#1). 6. Always listen to your coach. 7. Stay calm and smile always. 8. Dont forget to cover if he hits you. 9. Your shoes on nike its better to wear it on your sparring so that it will not hurt your feet (sometime it cause). 10. Always ATTACK, ATTACK, ATTACK AND ATTACK. Goodluck bro . . .

Mike:  To Morales - For you, it's like "to dream the impossible dream".

Maverick:  Well, it's a good insight. Both fighters are deemed to deliver their best. Everyone knows the capabilities of these two fighters. Both has advantages and disadvantages. Both has strong side and weakside. So, regardless of what these things are, they're still have the answer of who will end up victorious. Erik is a superb fighter with great pride and doesn't want to back down from his opponent. What he shown the last meeting with Pacman, he seemed to have eaten his pride by staying away from Manny in the later seconds of that round. But, sure he'll come back strong this coming Saturday and he'll try everything to redeem his credibility as the greatest superfeatherweight fighter. But thinking of Pacquiao's will and determination, well it's a hard thing to oppose. Erik just couldn't think this will be easy for him. Manny is known to heat up further everytime he gets hit. He uses the pains he absorbed as his strength and motivation. In other word, Manny has a big heart - a heart that is hard to beat. Erik have always thought Manny is bragging about his superiority prior to this fight, but it doesn't seem to look really that way. Manny, for me, is a humble and yet the greatest entertainer in boxing today in any weight classes. So, this coming Saturday, all eyes will be set and hearts will be pumping for these two gentlemen will deliver a sure knockout fight. I never wanted to predict for this fight, but the way I see it, Erik might beat Manny in decision only if he will outbox Manny in most of the rounds otherwise, Manny will knock him out for good in second half of the fight. Nice insight here Rick. More power!

wacks:  "EL TERRIBLLE" Morales will surely suffer terrible jobs from Pacman hehehe..... Its very hard to accept for Mexican people that their beloved Morales is going to lose...by TKO..hahahahaha, I will bet 1-10...

barehead:  Manny, you showed much improved lateral movement in the Larios fight. Larios had a terribly difficult time trying to hit you with his vaunted right because you knew to step to your right after dishing out your own licks. Now Morales is a different story. He\'s comfortable with both the orthodox and southpaw stance. He\'s gonna confuse you about where to move. You could try to escape to your left or right but instead be hit with an oncoming power right or left. Hope you\'ve taken this up with Freddie and Buboy.

Gerald:  For me It's Pacquiao....!!!!!!, On the early rounds but come to think of it on the six rounds morales wii be knock down. Mabuhay ka Manny the PACMAN Pacquiao at ang smbayanang filipino......!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thursday Nov 16, 2006 03:05:54 AM
Albert:  i\\\\\\\'m a filipino. if granting morales not only has a good but superb conditioning then presummably the mexican legend can stand for i think first 3 rounds of their fight. if morales uses tactics like what barrera used then probably he can survive. with thes premises, if pacquiao fails to known morales down, morales could win via unanimous decision.
Thursday Nov 16, 2006 03:30:26 AM
Niel:  Please stop making excuses that EM is already a tired horse with difficulty of making weight. Everybody knows that Erik and Manny both weigh 136 lbs at the 7 day weigh-in mandated by the WBC. So who could say that it is only EM who had difficulty of making weight???? The truth is both fighters are striving hard to make 130 lbs. Please also stop making the excuses that EM is already an old dog who had been in so many wars. This is the same excuses that was given to MAB when he got the beating of his life from the Pac. The TRUTH is, Erik Morales is still the same fighter that he used to be... it was just that he got humbled by a more excellent fighter in the person of Pacman. The TRUTH is, Erik Morales could still knock-out any 130 pounder out there, except the PACMAN...
Thursday Nov 16, 2006 04:29:17 AM
David Payne:  This is the same Pacman outboxed for 10 rounds by Marquez right. Don\'t write off Erik, if he\'s done the weight correct and is refreshed he could win this fight. I\'m rooting for the old soldier.

Rodney:  Great Article...the last Quote says it all about the magnitude of this fight!! “Our fight is bigger than the two of us because we carry more into the ring than most other fighters,” said Pacquiao, already a legend in his homeland. “We carry the heart and soul of our people and the pride and honor of our nations. The pressure on us is enormous, which is why I will be on the attack the second I hear the bell for round one.”

chrisL:  It sounds like you only got half of the story and you reported it just like a fan. If that's what you set out to do here, good job!
Thursday Nov 16, 2006 05:22:28 PM
Lupot:  Many guys will be disappointed on this fight..... MP will go down and kiss the canvass.... Enough with this nationalistic S**t!!!! If manny didnt win on the second fight do u think you would still support him??? I dont think so......
Thursday Nov 16, 2006 05:46:33 PM
Elmer:  All the talks will be prove in the ring this Saturday night. No techniques and styles of manny will be prove to erik on that night as what erik says. I wish him (erik) a lot after this fight that somehow he will be willing to accept DEFEAT and be a man. As what Manny said there would be no excuses WIN or LOSE. God bless u Manny....Mabuhay ka!!!! The whole nation will be praying for u.

MICA:  Hey Rick falsetad are you sayin that Morales has a good excuse when he lose this fight on nov 18? 30 yrs is still young for a boxer and weight problem is not an issue because of the hi-tech velocity

Twenty three years later after they seconded Marvin Hagler and Ray Leonard in Las Vegas, Goody Petronelli and Angelo Dundee crossed paths again. This time, it was at Foxwoods. Photo/friend of TSS "The Iceman" John Scully reports there were only pleasantries exchanged. Goody didn't debate the split decision victory enjoyed by Leonard, which to this day Hagler disputes.
